I have to say that I've never been disappointed in any casting once I see the stories StarKid writes actually played out and I've never felt like a single character was miscast in Hatchetfield, including recasts (Angela as Lex comes to mind, Joey as Ethan, Nick as Hidgens). I have complete faith that Joey was the best actor for the job and gave the best audition and matches most closely what their vision for Peter is.

Theory on why it’s taking some time to put Nightmare Time Season 2 on YouTube

As fans, we’re all wondering why it’s taking so long for StarKid to put Nightmare Time Season 2 on YouTube. I haven’t seen it yet (I was pretty short on cash), but to me it seemed like there weren’t many technical issues. So to me it feels like the waiting time must have a different reasoning. I have a theory that some people might dismiss immediately, but now I can’t think of nothing else.

(Let me begin by saying that this is just a theory. It might be completely wrong. In fact, it probably is. I don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes, I don’t know any of the StarKid members personally. This is just guessing.)

We know from live streams and tweets that Nick Lang doesn’t really like acting in these StarKid things, often he’s part of the cast because they were short on team members. He’s said that he doesn’t think that highly of his own acting, and that he’d rather see the roles played by the people they’d envisioned them playing. The biggest instance of this was of course the one time Nick went on for Lauren as Emma in The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, something the fandom latched onto, and something Nick preferred wouldn’t have happened in the first place. The fact that people keep bringing it up annoys him somewhat.

With Nightmare Time Season 2, Nick once again took over some roles, this time from Robert Manion, due to Robert being put on non-active for inappropriate behaviour. This was on short notice, so Nick once again didn’t have much choice. This is show business, and the show must go on.

Looking back at it, I’m wondering if Nick really wants to be, say, Hidgens in the definitive YouTube version. It’s there on the Internet forever. With Nightmare Time, it’s really easy to replace Nick with somebody else, it’s just an actor talking to a camera and not interacting with others on stage. Starkid was willing to cut certain elements from Nightmare Time Season 1 after feedback, so to me they seem to acknowledge that the YouTube versions are the definitive ones, not the ones that were performed live.

So, what if the delay is caused by Nick and Matt wanting to put up a YouTube version that is the best version they can have, as they intended from the start. Meaning that every actor plays their parts as intended, including Robert. Which would mean that Robert would need to record his parts, and be edited into the already existing episodes, taking over from Nick and Joey.

So, naturally, my theory is thus: the YouTube release of Nightmare Time Season 2 is taking so long because Team StarKid is figuring out when the appropriate time would be for Robert to rejoin the team. That is a whole can of worms of itself: you’d need to make sure the team is comfortable with Robert rejoining, the victim is comfortable with it, Robert himself is, and that he has proven that he has in fact grown and learned and that history won’t repeat itself.

And then there’s the fanbase, which is even more difficult: will people accept Robert’s return right now? Would they accept it under certain circumstances? Would they accept it later?

Regardless of my theory being correct or totally incorrect, these are questions StarKid will need to answer moving forward. While I get that putting Robert on hiatus wasn’t an easy decision to make (though probably the right one), deciding when to bring him back seems even harder. And the consequence to this might’ve caused a delay. Or at least, that’s my totally unfunded theory.

ok hi everyone!!

i watched honey queen and everyone’s live-blogging and GOD am i filled with questions:

• is curt going to play nibbly? because he was centered a lot in the sniggle credit scene

• at the beginning of the episode, i thought pokey was going to be the terrortubbie of the episode when they said it was a talent competition. when roman said that linda won because she was so hungry to win, that’s when it all clicked for me, so i’m really excited to see where the rest of the episodes lead to

• how will all of the other episodes connect to nibbly?? if that’s the way it’s going ofc. abstinence camp deals with the woods, but i have to think more about how the other episodes could fit/relate to nibbly

• what happened that was so bad at the past honey festivals where the queen was the hungriest to win?? does the rest of hatchetfield ever end up finding what happened to everyone else involved?? i get that the people in hatchetfield prob wouldn’t question the honey queen going missing, but what about everyone else that died on the way?? ex: zoey, sam, gerald

other things i’d like to add:

i absolutely adored nick as hidgens, he played him so well

the madonna references in the ‘queen b’ music video fit so well

anyone else sob at gerald’s death? yes ik, we just met him and he helped linda, but he was such a good husband to her and always had his family’s best interest😭😭

jae and bryce were SO GOOD in the theme song and bryce’s scenes, i cannot wait to see more of the two <33

Hatchetfield & Happy Endings

Mostly just 'cause, I wanted to make a list of every Hatchetfield story so far & see how many have happy vs. unhappy endings. (And sure, some of these are debatable since most are more Bittersweet than anything, but I just thought it would be interesting.)

TGWDLM -> Unhappy Ending, everyone dies and is resurrected as part of the Hive.

Black Friday -> Unhappy Ending, though they stop the cult & Wiggly's birth, everyone gets nuked by Russia anyway.

Ok, this list is kinda long actually, so I'm gonna put a 'Keep Reading' before the Nightmare Time stories. NOTE! There are SPOILERS for Nightmare Time 2 below the cut.

The Hatchetfield Ape Man -> Happy. Lucy escapes Hidgens/Ted's scheme and reunites with Chumby.

Watcher World -> Happy. Bill and Alice both manage to overcome Blinky's influence and drive home together, even becoming closer as father & daughter (Alice following Bill on Instagram)

Forever & Always -> Unhappy. I mean, it's happy for Paul 23 and Emdroid, but the real Emma Perkins gets murdered and has her life stolen by Emdroid

Time Bastard -> Unhappy. Ted accidentally kills the only girl he ever genuinely loved, loses his mind, spends years as Homeless Man, gets killed by the man he considered his best friend, then gets trapped inside the Bastard's Box for eternity.

Jane's A Car -> Unhappy. Tom gets taken away, believed to be insane & Becky's body is taken over by Jane's spirit, unbeknownst to Tim. presumably Becky's spirit ended up in the car, which got torn apart for scrap

The Witch In The Web -> Happy. Miss Holloway and Hannah manage to escape Nightmare Time, Hannah and Webby defeat Willabella, hint that Miss Holloway can help Lex & Hannah reunite and save them from their mother

Honey Queen -> Unhappy. Linda wins the pageant, believes herself victorious, only for her own father to reveal himself to be part of the Cult Of Starry Children and Sacrifice her to Nibbly.

Perky's Buds -> Unhappy. Despite escaping Ezekiel and surviving the fire, Emma & Ziggs are arrested for decimating an endangered species.

Abstinence Camp -> Happy. Sure, Grace taking over the camp isn't happy per se, but the main characters survive the attacks of Lumberaxe, so, swings and roundabouts.

Daddy -> Unhappy. Sherman invokes the power of the Lords in Black, then basically blackmails Frank into being his 'daddy' forever.

Killer Track -> Happy. Ok yes, Duke forgetting Miss Holloway is heartbreaking and most certainly not happy - but big picture, the Killer Track is stopped and Kale defeated, saving everyone at the Honey Festival. Plus, Duke & Miss 'Holiday' at the end had an optimistic tint to it

Yellow Jacket -> Happy. Obviously, sad that Ethan doesn't get to go with Lex & Hannah at the end, but the trio defeated Otho & Charles and all lived at the end.

Workin' Boys -> unknown

Nerdy Prudes Must Die -> unknown

So, the vast majority of Hatchetfield stories have unhappy endings, but currently 5/14 of them do have somewhat happy endings.

Nick has said that he and Matt do have some kind of 'endgame' planned for the Hatchetfield series (which will not necessarily be NPMD), so you have to wonder - will it be a triumph of good over evil? Or will it lean more towards the bittersweet side of things?

Anyway, just something I thought would be interesting to keep track of.

A Note on One of My Comfort Characters.

This is long, but I wanna speak out on my thoughts on my best boy Hidgens. I think we all have to acknowledge (and I know among the Hidgens lovers this is kinda scandalous) that Hidgens has done some pretty bad things. I mean, his actions in TGWDLM can almost be justified because of the world-ending circumstances causing him to become a bit... confused. His heart was in the right place if we are to belive his speech to Emma. He seemed like he genuinely believed the fact that this was going to save the world. The fact that life was going to become a musical was just an added perk. But... I don’t think we can overlook the entirety of Hatchetfield Ape Man. Now, I’m fairly sure Nick Lang has mentioned that he’s been struck by lightning, and if we are to consider the initial proposed backstory for him with his Working Boys to be cannon (where he had to watch them die) then... he’s had a pretty traumatic past. Theatre is obviously a coping mechanism for him, and the motive for at least the events of Hatchetfield Ape Man. 

I think it’s still perfectly fine to like him and to see his softer side. To giggle at his dorky side, and to make fun AUs and Headcannons about him, and to love this quirky little man. So long as you’re not making him out to be a saint, or excusing the things he’s done... it is okay to vibe with Hidgens. There’s a reason we like him, and it’s because he was written with a strong personality that, lets face it, a lot of the Starkid demographic is gonna relate to. That, and in general he’s an interesting, well-written and quirky character. The Langs knew that. Jeff knew that when he wrote Show Stopping Number. Hell, even Robert knows it and loves him (in spite of the gentle reminders that he’s not a good person). There’s a fine line between appreciating a good character and... becoming an apologist for them. The truth is, it is not okay to be a Hidgens apologist at this point in cannon. It’s not okay to justify the fact that he has both murdered and attempted murder. It wasn’t self defense. It’s not okay. And we can’t act like it is. We can’t glorify it. And at this point, I’m pretty sure we’re all trying to forget Hatchetfield Ape Man happened. But... we can acknowledge that that’s one reality in a fictional universe with a proven multiverse. And we can still enjoy his character. It’s like the rest of the villains you love. You know what they’re doing is wrong, but you still sing their songs, and draw their arts, and mimic their style. You just... don’t follow in their footsteps. 

The whole moral of that little talk: you can still like Hidgens so long as you acknowledge that he isn’t a saint. I personally love a lot of Hidgens AUs I’m seeing outside of the Ape Man!Cannon Hidgens, and I’ve seen people make some really fun headcannons based on cannon aspects of his personality and character. And I love those. I live for those. As I’ve said... he’s a comfort character. I love singing Show Stopping Number (have you seen my handle?), I cosplay Hidgens, one of my OCs (children) is Hidgens’ niece- who also has realities withing the Hatchet-multiverse where she does some not great things, and realities where she’s a hero. The situation is complex. But if you like the character... you’re perfectly valid. Just be careful you aren’t going too far. Love you all, and if you have any thoughts to add please do! Just be nice about it in the same way I was in this post. Please. I’m writing this to express an opinion, not be attacked.

So as you may already know last fall Robert admitted to sexually harassing someone and Starkid fired him but said that had he handling it and if he got better he could eventually come back

As you also probably already know Starkid for the past couple weeks we're posting puzzles and releasing info and such to hype up the Starkid Returns Kickstarter starting today. In the middle of Starkid posting this Robert did two lives on tiktok. I believe that he did this just to stir stuff up and bc he was upset he's not in Starkid, because frankly the timing of it just seems like he just wanted attention or drama or something.

He said that when this all first happened other Starkids were afraid they'd be put on blast too, other Starkids had also said inappropriate things to him and even traumatizing things and these things were handled well by Starkid. These are the most serious claims and I hope they're not true but there's been no proof to say if they are or aren't and no one else but Robert has claimed this or said his claims aren't true soo. Idk.

The rest of his claims are lies or petty.

He said the sexual harrsement the person received was meant to be a joke and that Starkid didn't fire him but he left due to mental health. He apologized for being apart of Twisted and said that others would regret it too for some reason? Said Homecoming was a bad time. He said that he was never asked to be in upcoming tour but he wouldn't do it anyway bc it's cringy. He said that Starkid has bias towards og members and act like the newer members are replaceable.

He also complained that Dylan gets to many songs, Nick's voice for Hidgens is different than his, and Mariah hangs out with her boyfriend more than him despite the being close.

no one asked for an analysis of the hatchetfield ape-man, but i wrote one anyway because i needed to get my thoughts out there

i think that we can all agree that the hatchetfield ape-man was the more comedy centric story from episode one. i went into it thinking it was going to be some sort of a creature feature and i suppose in some way, it was. or at least it presents itself as such. usually in creature features, the monster is the on wreaking havoc. some of them are mindless monster doing evil, but in some cases the monster is more so a representation of human-made problems and destruction. the hatchetfield ape-man very clearly takes the route of romance in a genre often dominated by evil monsters.

someone made a post saying something along the lines of watching the hatchetfield ape-man and then watcher world felt very similarly to watching tgwdlm and then watching black friday (i sadly haven’t been able to find the post again since i first saw it) and i’m inclined to agree. the guy who didn’t like musicals, at least to me, focused a lot more on trope subversion than black friday did and i see a similar pattern when it comes to ape-man vs watcher. it doesn’t present the ape-man as a monster, but rather an outsider. someone not understood by the community. instead of painting the ape-man as evil, it paints him as a hero of sorts. while this is certainly not unseen, monster romance film certainly exist, it is undeniable that the hatchetfield ape-man (like other monster romances) breaks with the horror movie trope of monsters often being representations real-life issues.

instead, the hatchetfield ape-man takes a different approach: it presents us with the twist that the real monster is not the literal monster. it’s the humans. specifically hidgens, who we’ve previously seen as a villain in tgwdlm. he takes a different approach to it this time; while still dreaming of producing his own musical, we see that he is much more motivated by greed this time around. his villainous turn doesn’t even have the twist of wanting to see the world become a better place, but instead he is purely selfish.

jonathan brisby is our first clear villain. he is not, in any sense of the word, a good person and he is actively written to be disliked. we later learn that, while certainly not a pleasant man, he is also being exploited. lucy isn’t a pure hero and jonathan isn’t a pure villain; they both use each other for different gains.

it’s also important to note that lucy and jonathan are both outsiders. not metaphorical outsiders like the ape-man is, but literal outsiders. i think that’s an important part of why they were written as british rather than american. it’s a funky little parallel and i simply think that’s neat.

not to return to hidgens, but i am going to return to hidgens. he first presents himself as a decent man, a professor who is trying to do good. he is very clearly not the ape-man, but rather someone on the “inside”. he is a human, but in the end it is him who turns to the most animalistic state of all the characters in the story. he is the bad guy of the story and he turns into a human representation of the stereotypical creature feature monster. jonathan might have claimed to be a hunter, but he became the prey.

what about ted? he once again finds himself in a gray area, not entirely good but not entirely bad either; and certainly not evil. he has a similar experience to what we often see in monster romances. if we see lucy as an outsider as well, at least. his arc is about learning to love the outsider and finding himself finally being accepted, something he seems to struggle with. he also plays the role of the outsider/monster and finds that the love and acceptance lucy shows her, he also wants to be loved. being the hatchetfield ape-man is better than the life he has waiting for him. both ted’s storylines have focused around love; he doesn’t have a good track record with the whole romance thing, but he was willing to die for lucy (something he wasn’t willing to do for paul who he called ‘one of his best friends’) because she showed him kindness and love. nick has described ted as a lonely, pathetic man and the hatchetfield ape-man doesn’t work against that idea, but it does play with typical monster romance ideas and gives him a somewhat happy ending, one where he is accepted and maybe not loved, but at least appreciated.

i loved watcher world a lot too and maybe i’ll word vomit about it at a later point, but i think the point i wanted to make is that i really enjoyed the hatchetfield ape-man.
