i was talking to my cousin a few days ago and we were talking about percy jackson. for context, im in my mid 20s and shes a teenager. and i loved hearing her perspective but so much about time when reading the text clearly effects interpretation, which is so cool. however, she tells me, obviously nico was gay, ofc people knew, why was that such a big reveal? and im like oh honey, that was 10 years ago. most people did not know he was gay (at least the circles i was in). gay characters in books now vs 2013 books? very very different.

I find it so fun being in the PJO fandom at the same time as the Ender’s Game fandom, and I’m gonna tell you why because these two series have absolutely nothing in common besides some obvious gays and kids with trauma.

I look at OSC and want to punch him in the face, yell, and scream at him. I mean, this man used the N slur in his book(I know it was published in the 80’s and it wasn’t that big of a deal, but I don’t love reading that word), is racist, homophobic and a bigot, despite his main character being a whole ass fruit basket. Choose a side, dude.

But then I turn and look at uncle Rick and think yes. He is inclusive, a genuinely good person, and shows representation in his books. Look at Frank, Hazel, Leo, Nico, and Will. Different races AND fellow homosexuals. We don’t stop winning with PJO.

I love the Ender’s Game series, I grew up with it, Ender is my son, the fandom is small and quiet, and therefore not too toxic. But then I remember everything from the N word to the author and his… ways, and don’t know how to feel about it, I will always love my boy Ender and his little traumatized ass, but OSC really needs to be put in his place.

But you keep going uncle Rick, I’m ready for my Solangelo book and live action PJO series.

If Ender’s Game is adapted again, please, for the love of gods, make it book accurate. Keep the kiss in, keep Rat army in, introduce characters at the right time, use actors/actresses that are of age. Overall do better.

I just wanted to thank you. I grew up reading Percy Jackson and was so obsessed with it until the solangelo happened and everyone fell in love with it and for me it ruined the characters so much. Especially the implications with Nico health and how he was to blame for part of his trauma. I hated it so much, it was unbearable to still read those books and everyone in the fandom just send me the “honey he gay” and “deal with it” whenever I dared to complain, as if that was my problem. I find solangelo shippers being the most unfriendly and unbearable to interact with because of that. I think even percabeth shippers who I noticed everyone keeps complaining about are so much more open to any criticism than them. So thank you for speaking up and still keeping your stance no matter what

But basically yeah: people tend to take critiques of it as homophobia rather than... literally normal criticisms of what is an incredibly unethical, and frankly badly written, relationship.
