Alice By Heart tells its characters in the most interesting way I've ever seen.
I once read a review of the show saying the characters were barely developed in the beginning, in an offhand comment about the show being confused.
I say to that the reporter was probably stupid.
We're not going to learn everything about these characters before we get to the wonderland bit. The audience came for an Alice In Wonderland story. So we learn about the characters as their Wonderland persona.
We learn that Angus is a stoner who copes with his regret and grief through...well, smoking.
We learn about *potential* romantic relations in the lobster dance.
We learn about Dodgy through the whole duchess scene, which is deeper than it seems and would probably need a whole lot more explaining to show what it says about his character, but basically, Dodgy is very clearly gay or even trans and, well, this is 1941.
Harold's little "riddle" in the tea party scene tells us his whole story, and we of course see his PTSD on display in the first scene.
Nigel, I feel, we learn more about in the real world scenes. All we learn from his Dormouse role is his childlike behavior.
Dr. Butridge has seen many patients and soldiers "sign up to die" in his time.
Tabatha has lost things (like her sister) and through her Cheshire Cat role wants to help Alice learn how to cope with loss.
There's a post somewhere on Tumblr that talks all about the symbolism in "Your Shell Of Grief" so go read that because it's great. (They did one for Brillig Braelig too) "Your Shell Of Grief" is also the song where we actually get deep with Clarissa's character. The rest of the time she's kinda a snob who believes she's above everything.
"Isn't It A Trial" is I believe targeted toward Alice's innocence of loving the sweet little fantasy book slipping away, but I believe the Red Cross Nurse is singing it because, unbeknownst to Alice, she's been through all that too. (And because the Queen Of Hearts in Alice's mind but we all knew that)
My point is, as opposed to letting us know these characters completely in the beginning and then putting them on an adventure, we spend the show learning these fascinating characters living in this difficult situation through the eyes of Alice's beloved storybook. And I love these characters deeply.
Also, read the book. You learn even more about them.

SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 16 OF THE MAGNUS PROTOCOL
So- Alice is still on the fact that the lady died, can't even think about it without shaking, but apparently the lady had been dead for ages and there was no way she could have been walking with the amount of water in her lungs? Sam and Celia(? I couldn't tell if it was Celia or Gwen and transcripts aren't out yet, it'd just make sense if it was Gwen, but after the end, I feel like it's Celia)
Didn't pay much attention to the videos by whoever or whatever (I don't think many people did, all of the slang made me cringe so much) but I know she or something, did it have something to do with the heart tattoo? Ink5soul didn't sound too thrilled to have to tattoo her.
Alice didn't seem too happy with the statement, probably because it was about people dying, considering, you know.
Gwen isn't happy, she doesn't know what the hell is going on, and apparently externals aren't allowed into the building, which is most likely why Bonzo hasn't made an appearance in the OIAR yet, he probably knows considering he gets letters that are for him, Nigel doesn't keep them.
Lena is pissed, and Gwen is finally getting some training, I think.
Still don't like Lady Mowbray, just a personal opinion. Her dogs need to be sat down and dressed up like how Agnes I think dressed up Kyle (Gru's dog) in Despicable me 1.
I think I'm gonna be posting my thoughts (And how much I really paid attention to) every new episode, it makes it easier to understand for me.

Listening to 10 - Saturday Night again, because I have things to do today and only an hour to get my hyper fixation fix.
Bloody hell the Mr Bonzo theme song just gives me terror whiplash now.
Nigel’s SOS - turns out that’s bloody appropriate, isn’t it!
‘Mr Six’ reminds me of the The Prisoner. (If you don’t know The Prisoner - the 60s Patrick McGoohan version and no other - you should. I think the theme of constant surveillance and not knowing who can be trusted and who is actually in charge relevant to TMAGP)
So it’s Celia listening to the Mr Bonzo statement and her only reaction is ‘hm’. Very calm. Almost as if she’s - used to this.
Funny how it’s Alice that Colin (my beloved) wants advice from - even though he rejects therapists for not knowing about computers and Alice claims to not know about computers.
Colin doesn’t trust Lena either…
So at the institute - whatever is listening is using an old fashioned modem, I think.
Alice is there to protect Sam and yet guide him away. Also she loves him…
Carved floor! Carved with what! Why are you drawing his attention to that, Alice!
Mr Bonzo is truly terrifying. And he knows Gwen now…
Click. Click! CLICK! The tape recorders are back baby. Never thought I’d have such an emotional reaction to a tape recorder.
Which begs the question - who controlled it? Because computers - yes, fine, Freddie can use a network to control computers and CCTV and phones to record. But a tape recorder - who is controlling that? Freddie has no access. Who - or what - switched it on? I guess it must be like the tape recorders from before - that would just appear and record for The Eye. If that’s so - who is this statement feeding?
Alice still wants to investigate doesn’t she? No matter what she knows.
Worm tracks!!! Symbols! My beloved Institute!
Ok - I think Alice saying Archive and the tape recording woke up and fed whatever is in the Institute enough to wake them up.
I wonder if Freddie has been waiting for [Error] to wake up? Is gathering evidence for them?
‘I care’ oh, Alice, your heart is showing.
I can’t quite hear the whispers! But the first time I heard this I thought they were Jon and Martin’s last words. So I think - the tape recorder fed [ERROR] enough to wake up. It followed Alice back to OIAR and now it is there, possibly in Freddie, or possibly a separate entity, it thinks Sam/Celia/Alice belongs to them and perhaps, maybe, has Jon’s voice

Heaven's Demons, Chapter 40
Word Count:  1.3k
Warnings:  mentions of violence, aggression, being stabbed, character death.
Tumblr media
1 Year Later
Sweetie smiled, her boys celebrating their birthday while she held her two-month-old daughter.  The twins blew out their candles with the help of Jake and Steve, and the rest of the charter members and non-MC friends began clapping and cheering for the little boys who looked more and more like their father with every passing day.
Her heart fluttered in happiness, seeing everyone there.  Lee and Lauren had showed up with their son and Amelia.  She was newly pregnant and had a very large ring on her finger.  After Andy was put away, Lee fought to have custody of Amelia to make sure that she was with family, and ever since then they couldn’t be happier.
Ari had started dating Bucky’s little sister, Rebecca, one of Lauren’s teacher friends, while working down at the VA, helping other veterans find a creative outlet once they were out of the military.  While he wasn’t part of the MC anymore, he still talked with a lot of the guys, and had begun working towards a counseling degree and assisting with programs to help more veterans like himself.
Even Bucky had shown up, with year-long sober Charles on his arm.  While they had a hard time getting Charles away from Nigel, Bucky managed to provide a safe space for him to detox under the protection of the Junkyard Dogs, and by the end of it, the two men had found themselves falling in love with one another.  Bucky had someone to care for, and Charles found himself caring for the heavily neglected biker in such a way that Bucky flourished under his gaze.  The two of them had even talked about adopting a child together, and Bucky had finally moved out of the clubhouse and into an actual house with Charles.
And while Steve, Jake, and Sweetie were happy with their little arrangement, Steve had decided that they needed to find a bigger house for their growing family.  So, while the party was at the clubhouse, Sweetie’s brother, and a few of the other guys had disappeared to move the stuff into a brand new house that Steve had purchased, with the hopes that once he got everyone home, and the kids to bed, that the three adults could begin christening it, and working on baby number four.  Because while he loved his boys, and Jake’s little addition, he found himself craving the idea of more kids around.
He was becoming softer ever since their little arrangement started, and Jake and Sweetie had not only made a place in his heart, but they made Steve a calmer, better man who strived to make the MC more above-board.
But the rest of the old charter was there.  Or most of them were, at least.  Lucas had managed to find love in a sweet butt and they were taking it slow.  He still held a lot of anger over losing Pixie, and when Steve had told him that he and Jake would be playing the role of the twins father now that he’d finally settled down, but Lee was a man of habit, and knew that he had nothing outside of the club.
Alice and Jefferson had gotten back together after Johnny’s patch party, and Jefferson had become more protective than ever now that she was about to burst with their first child; a little girl.  Meanwhile, Johnny and Hellcat had a little boy, a few months before Sweetie, Jake, and Steve’s little girl was born.
The only person who seemed to be missing from their little group was Sam, who unfortunately was unable to cope with the loss of his little librarian.  Steve did, however, give him a way out, and Sam ended up back in town with Ari, helping veterans at the VA.  He was still working through his own issues, but had been getting better, even through the refusal of coming to the twin’s party.
“Alright, what did you wish for?” Jake asked, playfully teasing the boys.
“Daddy that’s not how it works,” Dylan giggled, looking at him.  Then he looked at Steve, “dad, tell daddy that’s not how it works.”
“He’s right,” Steve smiled, winking at his boyfriend, “they tell you and it won’t come true.”
“I wished that the bad man was gone…that he stayed gone,” Mikey said quickly to his Steve, making his voice low enough that no one else could hear him, “that we were safe.”
Steve gave his son a soft look and patted his hair.  A few weeks ago, they caught sight of Andy on the news, and had been having nightmares as they overheard a trial was going to be happening, and they were worried that Andy would escape and come after their family.  But Steve sighed as he looked at the worried face of his son, a plan in motion so that his sons would never have to worry about Andy Barber ever again., “I promise buddy…we’re all safe…now you and your brother have some cake, okay?”
Tumblr media
“And in breaking news, Thor Odinson, wanted for the murder of his brother has been located yesterday in the state of Nebraska,” the news anchor said.  Across the room, Andy looked up from his table to see a picture of Thor, and then a video of him being apprehended and loaded into a cruiser, “he’s been wanted in connection to the murder of his brother nearly a year ago, an up-and-coming politician who was looking to rebuild the city.”
“You’re in my spot.”
Andy looked behind himself to see a large man.  He was roughly the same size as him, but the guy looked worse for wear.  Andy narrowed his eyes, “Fuck off.”
The guy’s jaw tensed, but he said nothing as Andy turned back around.
“Should really pay attention there, Barber.”
Andy’s eyes shot up to see someone all too familiar staring back at him.  His brow furrowed, “what the fuck do you think you’re doing here?”
“They transferred me back home once they got me,” Thor grumbled, sitting down at the table.  Andy frowned, noting that Thor’s trademarked long hair had been snipped to a buzzcut, “gotta try me in the state that Loki met his end in…”
“But how are you here?”
“Funny story about that,” he chuckled.  Andy gasped as he felt a sharp prick in his back, right along his spine.  Then two more in quick succession leading up to his neck, before the final one settled right at the juncture of his neck and shoulders.  His hand reached up and he felt for the shiv, “Cap made me an offer, Barber…and after I learned about what you did to the others…bout what you set up…the rest of that shit didn’t matter…so I let them catch me…just so I could deliver a message to you…personally!”
The guard’s whistle blew, and they called for everyone to get down.  Andy fell backwards off his seat; his back hitting the cold concrete.  Thor raised his head ever so slightly as the blood pooled around his former president.
“Every man bleeds, Barber.  We don’t kill women and we don’t kill children.  You destroyed our own as a means to control them…and that ain’t what the Heaven’s Demons are about!” Thor said firmly, “wish I could say I’m sorry brother…but I’m not.  It’s just a matter of survival.”
And as the light faded from Andy’s eyes and his body started to feel cold, he looked at the man who was still standing behind him.  The man claiming that Andy was in his seat.  And he caught the Heaven’s Demon’s mark along his forearm.  Rumlow’s face look like it’d been blown to hell and sewn back together.
He almost didn’t recognize the member, but he didn’t need to.  He knew that it was a final message from Cap, telling him that he was done.
That it was game over for him and that he was never going to get out alive.

Alice By Heart characters' love languages (and pronouns)
alice (she/her): quality time. when she and alfred are apart, she physically aches for him. that's why its so hard to let him go for the story
alfred (he/him): acts of service. he wants to make life as easy as possible for alice. he needs her to know how loved she is, and he needs her to be able to do everything she wants
tabatha (she/her): words of affirmation. not her receiving them, but her giving them. when she is with her partner, it is always a shower of lovely words
nigel (he/him): gift giving. nigel is pretty insecure, so he likes to have tangible proof that his partner still wants him
clarissa (she/her): words of affirmation. she needs to know her partner cares about her as a person, and not just as a commodity. she likes to be able to remember the inflection used to tell her she's worth it
dodgy (they/he): physical touch. dodgy and harold love to be affectionate with each other. they aren't very obnoxious with their affection, they just love to snuggle with each other. dodgy loves kisses on their head
harold (he/him, xe/xem): physical touch. when xe was a soldier, he didn't really have any close friends. it was all very professional for xem. when xe is having a particularly rough day, dodgy will begin whispering to him, and slowly wrap his arms around xem to calm him down.
angus (he/they): physical touch. you can tell from chillin the regrets that angus (and those whom alice relates him to) has a very snuggly relationship with those they love. I headcanon him as aspec, but with their friends they love to come up from behind them and just swaddle them into a bear hug

When a reporter goes undercover as a nanny to get the inside scoop on a playboy prince, she gets tangled in some royal intrigue and ends up finding love – but will she be able to keep up her lie? You can easily tell that everybody is trying their hardest to portray these characters. Some of them came across as real-life people while others just felt like characters in a movie. This could mainly be pointed to the writing in this film. Some of the lines in this film were just hilariously bad and cringy and I would give examples but I already forgot them. But I do have to say the scenery was stunning and the production on this was well done. Each set and costume looked perfect for each scene. The costumes fit each character and showed a bit more into their personality. For example, Richard’s outfits made him look like royalty but at the same time, a normal guy because that’s what he wants to be. This film had lots of pacing issues. From beginning to end it didn’t feel like that was the speed it should be going at. The beginning felt slow while the ending felt to fast. The creators of the film might have thought they had a longer film and then realized they only had a one hour and thirty-two-minute film so they had to quickly resolve the film. The last thing I want to talk about is the relationship in this film. It’s not believable or relatable. I know it shouldn’t be relatable seeing how it is about a journalist falling in love with a prince but the writers still should make it so some people can relate to at least one of them. And it isn’t believable because it seems too rushed. Throughout the entire film, they are hardly around each other and then all of a sudden he just loves her. There is no explanation why just little subtle hints. In the end, A Christmas Prince is perfect for people who like RomComs but for others not so much. I give A Christmas Prince a 6/10. Kamurai: Decent watch, probably won’t watch again, but can recommend. While it isn’t anything truly special, it’s a decent version of a “journalist in disguise falls in love” trope. Though the object of affection being a prince allows for resources that almost anyone wouldn’t turn down. There certainly is a lot of production put into the movie to maintain the grand perception of royals, but the best part of the movie is the heart felt Christmas vibe of it. Unfortunately, this is mostly achieved through the secondary characters and them influencing the royal family.

50 Years of Island Books: Kay Wilson
Tumblr media
Kay Wilson worked for Island Books from 2000 until 2016. Now Kay and her husband live on Lummi Island, surrounded by a field with two big gardens and many fruit trees. She helps raise money for the local library by running a book sale in the summer, partly to help the community and partly to feed her need to be buried in books. Their three children and old friends are scattered around, and Kay says going to visit them is a lovely way to be out in the world.
Miriam: Can you tell me about how you came to work at Island Books? Who did you work with, and what was happening in the world then?
Kay: Around 1982, I joined the Red and Black Books Collective, a politically progressive store that had been really important to the Seattle queer and feminist community since 1973. At first I volunteered, eventually becoming a paid staff book and card buyer. It was an incredible place to work and I was there for 16 years, but when the store was clearly not going to make it, I quit around 1998 and in 1999 went to work in a tiny green grocery that was in my Ballard neighborhood. I didn't want to work at another bookstore, partly because our family was fishing in the summers in Alaska and it seemed hard to find any bookstore that would accommodate that schedule. This little grocery served a sweet little Ballard neighborhood and it was full of regulars. Among those regulars were Roger and Nancy Page living as they did right around the corner. Roger and I especially hit it off. We had lots of things in common—roses, gardens, cooking, and so it happened, books and the selling of them. Eventually he asked me to come work at Island Books. Did I want to go to Mercer Island from Ballard every day? Did I want to mend my book-selling broken heart and do it again? I went over there and took a look. I was introduced to the staff and said okay.
This was an era when Amazon was eating independent bookstores for breakfast. So many everywhere. Roger clearly understood that in order to survive and thrive, his bookstore had to have really smart, thoroughly engaged booksellers who truly knew about both books and people. Staff there when I started were Cindy Corujo, Lori Mitchell, Wendy Crawford, Garry Jarman, and another part timer, Nancy Watkins. Not too long after, wonderful Nancy Shawn came (also a Red and Blackie) and then the unforgettable Marni Gittinger. These people each had their special way of making sure the customers got what they wanted, and many books they had no idea they wanted. We loved each other, had each other's backs, sometimes drove each other crazy. We had a lot of fun, insisted upon a whiskey in the backroom at 5pm if we weren't too busy (thank you Roger for keeping a bottle of Irish in the cupboard).

Miriam: It was such a fun time. As I recall, one of your specialties was the cookbook section. Do you remember any particular cookbooks you hand-sold time and again?
Kay: I started collecting cookbooks long before I came to Island Books, so it was always fun and easy to help folks find a good one, either for themselves, or as a gift. One of my favorites was and still is Tender by Nigel Slater, or really any of his glorious cookbooks, which can easily be used as lovely books to just sit and read, like getting a long letter from your auntie, the fantastic cook. Also, the books of Laurie Colwin, Home Cooking and More Home Cooking. These have recipes, but also stories that make you feel like having a dinner party or making an impromptu lunch for a surprise visitor is no big deal. James Beard's American Cookery is still in print and is so fantastic, a classic for a reason, and more fun than The Joy of Cooking, but fills a similar place on your cookbook shelf. Dori Greenspan's wonderful French cookbooks, books by Madhur Jaffery for her beautiful Indian cooking, Alice Waters' Chez Panisse Vegetables, as much for the illustrations as the recipes. The brilliant locals, Renee Erikson, Tom Douglas. Ottolenghi for his gifted many-ingredient recipes (forget making something with three or four items!)
Miriam: This is making me hungry. Let's walk out of the cookbook section. Will you give me a tour of the rest of the shelves? Tell us some of your favorite hand-sells of all time.
Kay: Of the other books I love and sold to many customers over the years, here are a few:
The books of Louise Erdrich, really almost anything, but I think The Master Butchers Singing Club is so very beautiful and original. It's not that her books don't have sorrow in them, but they are books of humanity and hope in the end. And if you want a whole universe to enter into, you can start with Love Medicine and just keep going.
White Teeth by Zadie Smith. Her first book was so exciting, historical fiction in a way, written with such exuberance for the words on the page.
Small Island by English writer Andrea Levy. Written from the point of view of four people deeply affected by World War II whose lives intersect, it's a moving story about who belongs and why, with insight into race and class without at all being a polemic.
Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin. Magical realism for those who think they won't like it. It's a riot, a huge, passionately told story of New York City, as if Dickens and Garcia Marquez decided to write a beautiful love story about an orphan who lives through all the ages of the city.
In the Fall by Jeffrey Lent. Historical fiction that begins at the end of the Civil War, about an escaping enslaved woman who rescues a wounded Union soldier and goes with him home to Vermont, where they marry. Lent has a few more books, all worth reading, but this one is memorable.
The poetry of Mary Oliver, especially White Pine. Just stand there and read the poem "William." If you don't buy that book, you might be dead to poetry.
Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient. (The movie is good, but oh, the book!)
Pema Chodrun's When Things Fall Apart. Life saving help for someone going through difficult times. Simple, a way in towards kindness to yourself and others, even the difficult ones.
Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez. His writing about the natural world and himself in it is just enthralling.
A Midwife's Tale by the American historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. This book, about Martha Ballard, a midwife in late 18th century Maine, alternates between Ballard's diary and Ulrich's commentary about life then, insightfully revealing how much the world has changed materially, but still we recognize ourselves as not so different.
Anything by Oliver Sacks, especially Musicophilia. As is his usual, multiple stories about people who have had amazing neurological conditions that are affected by music.
Swimming to Antarctica by Lynne Cox. Cox's memoir about her open water long distance swimming is just a great inspiring read. Imagine swimming the English Channel in 38 degree water in record time with just a swimsuit on. What a woman!
The Ghost Map by Steven Johnson. This book about how it was finally figured out how cholera and the London water system were interconnected will make you deeply grateful for that glass of water you can drink right out of your tap, at least if you live in the right place.

Miriam: Thank you for sharing these, Kay, and it's so good to hear from you. We all get numb to book recommendations sometimes, but this is such a cultivated list! I bet Island Books customers will find great pleasure in those books and can confidently pick them up knowing you have a lifetime of expertise informing the recommendations. You're a cherished part of Island Books' history, and we are all sending you bookstore love.
To our Island Books community: If you are interested in ordering any of Kay's wonderful recommendations, please email [email protected]. We ask for your patience, as it may take a little extra time.
In the next 50 Years ofIslandBooksinstallment, I’ll be talking to local legend and Mercer Island children's concert musician Nancy Stewart, the founder of Sing With Our Kids, who has been involved with Island Books for forty-some years and continues to lead our regular childrens Story Times.

So… I have an angsty theory about Your Shell of Grief
So, this song has some deeply silly lyrics, and maybe I’m in the minority but that doesn’t make it any less sad to me. I don’t know, something about it landed with me I guess. But my theory is about the characters and what their verses in the song say about them. Or the fact that they have verses at all, I guess.
Like I know it might not have been intentional, but I feel like it at least opens things up for headcanons based on which mock turtles sing.
Maybe it’s just me but I think the ones that sing solos are the ones who have losses they can’t get past in the real world.
Elaboration below the cut 🔽
Dr. Butridge sings and he’s a fucking doctor in a warzone. There’s probably been plenty of patients he couldn’t save, and maybe he blames himself for some of their deaths. Also given said warzone it’s more than possible he’s lost loved ones too.
Harold sings, and we already know he’s got some pretty severe ptsd. He alluded to a friend who died in a past scene and whether his friend and his ‘husband’ he mentions in the song are the same person or two different people, it doesn’t seem like his mental state has really let him process any of that.
Clarissa sings, and we don’t know much about her, but we do know that she holds on to material things pretty tightly. Things from her life before the bombings. That might be about a similar concept to Alice (mourning her old life), or maybe she holds onto those things because they’re associated with someone she lost.
Dodgy sings about losing his rabbi, and like… losing your spiritual leader in the middle of knowing that not that far away there is an army of people who want to wipe people like you off the face of the planet? That doesn’t seem like something you’d heal from quickly.
Alice, obviously, is just starting to accept that she’s going to lose/has lost Alfred. We already know that.
Meanwhile, I find it equally interesting to all of the above that Tabatha does not sing. They mention at the beginning that she had a sister she lost, but she’s also well-enough adjusted that she can counsel someone else on dealing with grief and letting go. She’s not stuck on her loss, so she doesn’t have a main part in the song.
Also, the Red Cross Nurse doesn’t sing, because she’s practical almost to the point of cruel, and it’s a waste of her time to dwell on the past. She keeps moving forward.
Lastly, Nigel doesn’t sing, because as far as he knows he doesn’t have a loss to sing about. (Do we even know that?) He was pretty adamant that his parents were coming for him but then again Alice was pretty adamant that Alfred wasn’t dying. He’s not stuck because he doesn’t know if there’s anything to be stuck on.
The characters who can’t move past their losses sing Your Shell of Grief. The ones that don’t have a loss or are healthy enough to move on don’t. *mic drop*
*I realize that this post does not account for Angus. This is because I don’t really understand Angus. Idk it’s hard to tell if he’s so carefree because of the drugs or because he doesn’t have anything he’s stuck on.*
Anyway there’s my angsty over-analyzation of Your Shell of Grief. Do I really wish that the show had given a little more insight into them? Hell yeah. Do I also realize that this is all probably a stretch? Also yeah. Do I realize I should be sleeping instead of typing this up so late on a school night? Absolutely.

the charming prince, the wary sailor, and the brooding captain
After their introductions, Alfred paused, looking around. Then, his gaze settled back on the young prince in front of him. Or...older, if he remembered correctly. Not much older than him—maybe by a couple of months, if his memory served him right. At this point, Alfred had been on the ship for a few months alongside Alice. His hair had grown down to the middle of his neck, a big mop of caramel curls framing his face in what Dodgy believed to be an endearing sort of way. Well, endearing for any other freckly pretty boy with a kind smile. This one just so happened to be a part of the pirate crew that kidnapped him, unfortunately.
Regardless, Alfred spoke quietly. “Are your hands hurting?” He asked, reaching behind Dodgy to feel his tender skin around the restraining ropes Tabatha expertly got him entangled in.
Dodgy sucked in a breath through his teeth, squirming as far back into the wooden wall of the deck he could go. He was still tied up and stuffed in one corner. “Don’t-“
Alfred frowned at his reaction and sat back on his bottom, looking across to Dodgy.
“I’m not trying to hurt you. I was hoping I might be able to help you. I could loosen those, if you’d like. Make sure your wrists aren’t cut, and all. I...can’t technically let you go and leave, because Captain Tabatha will have us both walking the plank, but I’ll do my best to make you feel a little more comfortable,” he reasoned.
The sound of the waves crashing and Dodgy’s shallow breathing hung heavy in the air for a moment, but he nodded. He had to be brave.
“I’d like that very much, Sailor.”

y’all ever think about the fact that after the events of alice by heart all the bunker kids become friends, and alice and alfred open a flower shop together, and whenever tabatha misses her sister alice is there for her, and angus helps harold calm down when he’s panicking or remembering trauma, and harold and tabatha realize that nigel’s parents are gone and both go ‘looks like we have a child now,’ and dodgy delivers newspapers and likes to fold them into those little hats and cram them on everyone’s head when their backs are turned, and clarissa comes into alice’s flat and borrows her clothes without asking permission, and angus goes to university, and alfred teaches dodgy and nigel how to tie their ties when they go to his graduation, and on clarissa’s first birthday after the war they all surprise her with a cake made with real eggs and butter and she starts crying, and alice refuses to accept harold’s money when he buys flowers for freddie’s grave, and they all slowly heal and learn to love each other and themselves? :)

some of the abh kids’ fashion senses in modern day no i do not take constructive criticism
alice: either all thrifted, bought from small businesses, or handmade. anti-fast fashion. vintage-inspired silhouettes but not exactly. graphic t-shirts or big sweaters tucked into maxi-skirts. dresses from that one etsy shop inspired by little women. occasionally wears pants but not usually. lots of lace and florals and light colors. favorite color is blue. any kind of blue. always wears a locket with pictures of her and alfred as children inside. either hand-embroidered white converse or some kind of mary-janes or flats
Tumblr media
alfred: ugly. he comes from a rich family so he has all this designer shit he got as gifts that he still hasn’t gotten rid of and he doesn’t know how to style them. but he doesn’t even like the designer shit anyway, he prefers graphic t-shirts with cute characters like garfield or scooby doo or rabbits on them. he thinks just because something is the same color it’ll automatically look good together so he’ll pair together two wildly different shades of green and think he’s a genius. he likes big clothes because they hide the areas he’s insecure about, and he thinks the boxy look is very masculine and he likes that. this accidentally turned into a character analysis. also he exclusively wears chunky ass dad sneakers that look like they were plucked straight from ur uncle’s yard sale but he actually spent a lot of money on them. always wears a watch. also his socks never fucking match
Tumblr media
tabatha: not afraid to show anything off. shirts with deep v-necks, half unbuttoned button-downs, bras under blazers, whatever. alternatively, very into turtlenecks. also those corset-style tops i don’t know what they’re called??? pants are always high-waisted. dark colors or neutrals. lots of dark winelike purples. faux-sophisticated and posh. HOWEVER, she also wears doc martens with EVERYTHING. it doesn’t matter if it matches or not, she spent a lot of money on those boots and she loves them a lot!!! minimal jewelry if anything. belts! belts are great! lots of her clothes were either thrifted, gifted, or are knock-offs of a more expensive brand and she lowkey prides herself in that. big academia + lesbian energy tbh
Tumblr media
dodgy: art hoe vibes. yellow, funky patterned high-waisted pants, checkered vans, the whole shabang. he’s very in-touch with himself and not afraid to be a little bit feminine so he wears skirts and dresses often. though his favorite type of look is funky patterned button-downs either tucked into his pants and half unbuttoned or tied in a bow at the bottom. a mix of handmade and thrifted and also designer stuff. also lives on depop. the colors and patterns he wears are definitely all over the place but he’s good at piecing them together in different and unique outfits. truly a colorblock king. really into overalls, bucket hats, and crop tops too. not all together, though. loves to layer- like, on a 2010 disney channel level. but he actually knows how to make it go together. big belief in fashion as an art form and it shows. big converse stan. always cuffs his jeans
Tumblr media
mamie: “basic” fashion. cardigans, bralettes, turtlenecks, jeans, teddybear jackets. it’s all like gentrified designer fashion though like it’s deliberately designed to look like it’s been thrifted even though it wasn’t. she would never wear used clothes. disgusting. biker shorts and big sweatshirts are a vibe, and so are those little pastel cardigan crop top things, and also shirts with a lettuce hem. also not afraid of solid color fashion. she makes it work. she pretty much follows the trends though and doesn’t usually stray out of them. anti-plaid bc it reminds her of catholic school. brandy melville stannie
Tumblr media
clarissa: short skirts, spaghetti-straps, crop tops. big fan of denim skirts. wears heels with a casual outfit. preferred color is a pale yellow even though yellow is so hard to find cute clothes in. favorite pattern is gingham or florals. off the shoulder tops are cool. her whole vibe is vvvvv summery which is kind of awkward considering she lives in rainy ass england. oh well she deals with it. had a vsco girl phase but likes to ignore that fact after it became a meme. she’s still a scrunchie addict though

Conversation
Tabitha: So *insert Tabby’s gf name* is the person I’ve been seeing recently
Tabby’s gf: Why are you all looking at me like I’m a zoo animal?
Alice: Well Tabby acts as sort of the mom of the group, so emotionally, this is kind of like being told you’re our new stepmom
Tabby’s gf: But you know it’s nothing like that, right?
Dodgy: Absolutely, do you make macaroni?
