2023 in review! I made an effort to try more things and it worked mostly (at least for TV and movies). New things, new-to-me things, and new installments of old things all had characters to love even if I didn't necessarily feel fannish about them, and I'm hoping 2024 does, too.

This is a big text post, and I apologize :)

Recently, I saw the Barbie movie, I had thoughts and feelings about it afterward that I had to share. So once I was with friends who had seen the movie, we talked about it. I talked about how I loved the messaging that I saw in the movie. My friend talked about how amazing the representation of Barbies mental health/disorders was. It was great! My friends boyfriend didn't say much until another friend showed up and mentioned how he thought Ken (Ryan Gosling specifically) was fantastic. They said they wanted to buy the Kenough sweaters, they kept telling each other that they were kenough, and then they played every song that Ken sung.

I could kinda tell my friend had more to say about the movie, and I certainly did. More than anything, I wanted to tell them to shut up about Ken. The movie wasn't about him. It was about Barbie and how women are treated by the world. Yet here are the men only talking about the men in the film and not letting the afab people talk about anything else.

Ken being told that he isn't defined by being Barbies boyfriend or how well he does beach, and that he is kenough was wonderful. But Barbie had the same character arc, going from thinking she's only stereotypical Barbie to choosing to become human because possibility is beautiful and it makes her feel is all that matters. Barbie learned it then told Ken because it was a hard journey and she wanted to help him, yet so many people are only paying attention to Kens realization.

Looking back, I focused on Ken too, before I had even seen the movie. This is stolen straight from Google:

"He admits he found his daughters' Ken doll “face down in the mud outside one day, next to a squished lemon” which was all the convincing Gosling need. “It was like, This guy's story does need to be told, you know?”"

I loved this it just really stuck with me for some reason, but I don't like it now. Ken's face down in the mud because his story doesn't need to be told. He doesn't represent what all the little girls playing with Barbie are looking for, which is to be able to do what they want and have that be kenough. The Kens were there to mirror how men treat everyone else in the real world. This movie was for the Barbies of the world, a "guy's story" doesn't belong in it. It's okay for the movie to be made for one group, especially when the majority of movies are made for the other.

It's very disheartening see when I've heard people call the movie, "women empowering", "the most feminist movie ever" and so much more. Ironic that a movie ment to show how women get overshadowed by men is having its plot overshadowed by the men that acted in it.

Ive come to the realization that the reason theres a small but loud group of people who are showing nothing but hate for the rwrb movie is because they have completely unrealistic expectations. People are forgetting that this is a cheesy romantic comedy, thats supposed to look and feel like a cheesy romantic comedy. This isnt going to be moonlight or gods own country or some other critically acclaimed, oscar nomintaed queer film that makes straight people go "hmm maybe they do deserve rights and respect🤷‍♀️"

Its gonna be a cheesy adult romantic comedy, thats gonna be a bit camp and over the top and thats exactly why its so good. I dont want to think about every gay movie I watch. I want to watch it and see two queer people fall in love and thats it. Thats how deep it goes. Maybe a sprinkling of politcal commentary in between.

There is this issue thats become bigger and bigger every passing year, that people expect every bit of queer representation to be the best thing ever. There can not ever be anything cringey or different or silly, and if it is then they send endless hate towards it, and in an industry that already hates to show queer people on screen, its this viscious cycle of someone finally being greenlit to make queer media, the media gets endless hate for not being perfect, the studio cancels the queer media before giving it a chance because theyve just 'proven that it wont make money', suddenly everyone is saying 'why do they keep canceling queer media😢', cycle repeats.

Im so over it. Let gay people be slightly cringy or cheesy or campy. Let queer media exist without putting it on this huge pedestal. Just enjoy things! And if you dont, dont watch it! Move on, find something better to do.

I want light-hearted rom coms about queer adults just being queer adults and havig fun. I want comedy adventures where the characters just happen to be gay. I want more horror where at the end the final girl kisses a girl and can't belive they lived but not because they're gay. (suprisingly several of these exist and I love it)

I don't always want to think about the plight and horrors of being queer today with every queer movie I watch.

Sometimes, yes of course, I want to be seen on that level.

(Nimona, which came this weekend is a perfect example of a queer movie where I felt very very seen but also had a good time and was an incredibly silly fantasy adventure movie. But, still had the queer expereince intertwined.)

I'm looking forward to a movie that will be 90% rom com, and 10% realism/heavyness. re: being outed is a real thing that happens to people. famous people.

Alex and Henry go through some heavy shit. There's seriously traumatizing stuff at the end of the book. They're both dealing with mental illnesses, complex families, and rock-or-a-hard-place situations. I want all of that honored.

And, at the same time, I'm expecting a straight-to-streaming, mid-budget, movie that had to pass through a LOT of straight hands and board meetings to get to us.

Not to say we should love and accept every queer movie that comes out automatically, they have been done wrong in the past. (example: I skipped call me by your name bc the age gap still makes me too uncomfortable to watch)

But we have to give queer movies a chance to fit the genre they were made for, the tone they are made to be, and give queer creators a chance to show they are us annd they know us. The director is Bi. He's spent so much time going on about how much he related to Alex that he needed to make this movie. It's his first directing role, and I'm giving him a chance.

I'll only take the Oscars seriously when they start nominating animated films in other categories that aren't strictly for animation. Spiderverse deserved a Best Score and Visual Effects nomination. I'd even go as far as to say it should've had a crack at Best Picture. Mutant Mayhem was certainly better than Elemental, if on a purely visual level.

This is biased, but if Elemental wins, it's probably because that's the only animated movie the voters saw. If The Boy and The Heron wins, it's because it's Miyazaki and they'd look good letting him win.

I fully expect either Spiderverse or Heron to win, but if Nimona does, I'd be so happy for the folks at Bluesky and Netflix who kept working on it despite the incredible challenges they faced. I hope Disney are wiping the egg off their face, realizing they shut down the studio that helped produce an Oscar-nominated movie within their last days.

I would like to hear about which characters would use which kind of fountain pen 👀

okay, so with the caveat that all of this is coming from me researching pens in my quest to become slightly a 'pen person' and not like. being one. (but also from the perspective of watching my friend talk extremely in-depth about this for many years, and cribbing from her, in my defense.)

here are some random character-pen matchups and headcanons bc why not!!

first off. minimus, obviously.

there's a few things i think about this: he's fundamentally conservative in his tastes i think (no wild experimental designs), someone who would not want to spend an Excessive amount of money but also someone who would definitely have a higher-end one quality wise, and he'd have really nitpicky taste about shit like quality control. with this in mind, the guides i read that were offering opinions on higher-end 'beginner pens' consistently brought up the Pilot Custom 74, which is like, the platonic ideal of just a functional good quality Fountain Pen TM:

look at it. that sure is a ~£190 fountain pen! it's classic, functional, a solid 'name', expensive enough i feel like a person who grew up well off would be like 'oh this is my everyday pen' and i would be sort of like 'the fuck that costs half my rent'. lmao. but not like, someone splashing out a thousand quid or more expensive, yknow. he's probably had this same pen for like. the equivalent of twenty years or more. i'm sure he has more than one but this is his 'workhorse'.

here's another one i immediately am like 'oh i know what to pick' about. this one less in terms of specifically 'this character would use it' and more like 'this character reminds me of this pen'. it's rewind! and the pen is a Tombow Zoom 828fp because. well. look at this.

MINI PEN. CHIBI LITTLE FOUNTAIN PEN. there's apparently a chinese pen that is a lot cheaper you can get of this little chonker's basic design, and i'm very, very seriously tempted to get one and call it 'rewind'. lmao. short and charmingly proportioned! i don't think rewind probably actually uses a pen but maybe this was one of those spousal in-joke gifts pre-war or something like 'haha this reminded me of you'/'are you calling me short' or whatever idfk. the point is. TINY PEN.

nautica got riptide a Jinhao 993 to cheer him up when they started doing lessons in that one issue towards the end of MTMTE/pre-DotL and he's finding it difficult maybe. "why would a fountain pen cheer him up-" THIS IS WHY LOOK AT THESE

my pen friend got the pink one of these for a fiver or something, bc i pointed out it was a pink shark and therefore a Nimona pen. haha. anyway. that's why riptide has a fountain pen.

rodimus is having a mid life crisis, and also magnus will probably think he is Mature and Good At Work if he shows up with a fountain pen, he figures one time, so he wheedles money off drift and buys this monstrosity, which to be clear costs EIGHT THOUSAND EUROS and is supposed to look like a cool racecar themed... thing. montegrappa is so fucking overpriced and tacky and they're invariably hilarious to me whenever they release some godawful tie-in thing.

now prowl. prowl doesn't have a fountain pen because prowl is the sort of person who insists on constantly having fucking. Gadgets TM. you know. the man thinks a smart fridge is a necessity, for some fucking reason. if it's electronic it's Better. however, LAMY, i found out, in addition to its wide range of pens, also makes like... high-end digital pens? you know, in the style of their most well known fountain pen design (LAMY safari) but like. a stylus. buying a brand-name pen manufacturer's stylus bc you want to have a fountain pen but also refuse to do anything not on a tablet or something is. 100% prowl to me.

and i think that drift would have a LAMY 2000. look at this thing. it's somehow so slick and modern looking in a way most fountain pens aren't without feeling weird or like it isn't one. it's also a really well regarded pen across the board and so many people swear by this thing. (my friend does indeed have this one!) he's got it because he (canonically) journals, obviously, he is whipping this bad boy out after meditation to Chronicle His Emotional State (usually um. bad. moving along.) it's one of the nice things he bought himself after he somehow acquired all that money (stole it on his way out from the decepticons).

sidenote: megatron doesn't use a fountain pen, despite being a canonical writer. his handwriting is fucking atrocious and he would break one pressing too hard if he tried. he privately thinks they're sort of pointless, but lets minimus endlessly explain nib types for the sake of indulging someone he likes and who clearly is used to being told to shut up.

“Hey—” “Have you seen the baby?” Ambrosius’ words come out rushed and jumbled. Ballister stares at him. “Have I seen the—She was with you!” “Well, yes.” Ballister waits for him to continue. Raises an eyebrow. “You lost the—“ “I lost the baby.” Ballister begins searching, walking in the direction of the living room. “Amb, we’ve talked about this. You need to stop losing the baby.” “Obviously!” Ballister can’t help but laugh a bit, somewhat in disbelief. Ambrosius always gets so stressed about the baby. It’s almost funny, considering the nature of their relationship. They love each other, of course, but neither of them would ever say it. That all being said, somehow, when it comes to parenting, Ambrosius is the good cop, and Ballister the bad. However, Ballister can confidently say he’s never lost the baby. “Nimona!” Ambrosius calls, hurrying after Ballister. He lifts up part of the couch. “Why would she be under the couch?” Ballister asks, laughing. “Our baby is not a normal baby.” Ambrosius lowers the couch. There’s a giggle from the kitchen. Ballister glances at Ambrosius to see he’s already taken off. He follows him. “Good Gloreth!” Ballister rounds the corner just in time as Ambrosius plucks a knife from Nimona’s hands. It seems to be covered in saliva. Was she … using it as a teething toy? “Nimona, that is not food,” Ambrosius scolds. Nimona gives Ambrosius possibly the most potent glare that Ballister has ever seen a baby give. He laughs a bit as Ambrosius wipes down the knife and sets it back in the block. “You know.” Ballister leans against the doorway, placing his hand on his hip. “I don’t think we’ve baby proofed enough.” “Oh,” Ambrosius deadpans. “You don’t say.” Ballister laughs some more as Ambrosius scoops Nimona up in his arms, even as she squawks and squirms, before crossing her little arms and making herself comfortable, a frown still on her lips. “I swear she likes you more,” Ambrosius grumbles. “She never runs away from you.” “Come on, now, sweetheart, you know she loves you.” Ballister pushes himself up off the wall and crosses the kitchen to them, kissing Nimona’s forehead as she shrieks with laughter before pecking Ambrosius on the lips. He cups his husband’s cheek, smiling at him. “You two just … butt heads.” “Buttheads!” Nimona shouts. They both freeze. Sigh. Laugh some. “Is her first word seriously butthead?” Ambrosius asks. Ballister shrugs. “Suppose so.” “Fitting.” “I’d say.” They exchange smiles and, Nimona still cradled in Ambrosius’ arms, make their way back to the living room.
