So the game basically tells you about the story of two traveller, who was travelling from world to world until suddenly a mysterious god appears, took one of the twins and take away the other twins power, and now you're playing as the twin who was looking for their missing sister.

You look at the wishing button, tempted to wish for a character, you decided to pull. Expecting a cool banner of the current character instead, you're greets by a white screen.

Ruminating on Rebels,1

Apparently I’m blathering on about Rebels episodes as they happen, which I hadn’t expected. I hope that means there’ll also be an overview at the end of the season, but I haven’t decided yet. Regardless, I finished the first one, so here we go.

SPOILERS AHEAD. REBELS CRITICAL.

Episode 1: Spark of Rebellion Part I

Overview:

Vader talking to an Inquisitor about how “the Emperor has foreseen a new threat: the children of the Force must not become Jedi. Hunt them down and any Jedi who might train them.”

Lothal: seeing Ezra top of a watertower watching a new super star destroyer coming in, zipping off to the city, where he helps a random citizen who some Imps are roughing up – it’s demonstrated he can pick pockets like nobody’s business. Then it turns out him helping the fruitseller (is this a Cabbage Guy reference? It feels like a Cabbage Guy reference) is self interest, to get food. Spots the Ghost crew beginning a heist of several speeders worth of mystery crates, Ezra inserts himself to grab a speeder. Chase scene out of the city, TIE fighters come in, the Ghost swings in and takes out one (leaving the other – this convinces Ezra to go with the crew, along with his crate that he Force jumps with onto the ship). Bit of a battle, off to Hyperspace, back to the planet where they give food from the crates to needy folks in “Tarkintown” and the guns to a smuggler that gives them intel on some Wookiee prisoners. Ezra discovers Kanan’s old lightsaber and a holocron, steals the latter. Crew bluffs their way onto the transport ship, only to find out it’s a trap via incoming Star Destroyer, and it’s on Ezra to go warn the others due to jammed comms.

Random impressions:

I hate this art style. I feel like it’s specifically designed to sell toys. I feel the same impulse to reach out and take armor apart that I have when I see a new style of mechanical pencil: my hands itch to find out how to take it to pieces. I paused during certain scenes and it’s such a clear picture I wanna reach out, snag the toy, and remove bits to figure out how it all goes together, and BOY does that kill any immersion. Also, everything is plastic. Especially hair. Like, “great, you make bouncy lekku, but COULD WE MAYBE SEE HOW THAT’S HAIR AND NOT A BLOB EATING EZRA’S HEAD?”

The fight scene choreography is nice, I will certainly grant that. The chase scenes were also good.

I am honestly, SERIOUSLY concerned: Kanan shows up, and I have no idea WHY, but BOY do I want to immediately punch him in the face. Like, my brain is going “that man has a very punchable face!” This is not a normal reaction for me, and I can’t tell WHY it’s happening. Help?

This show is clearly trying for the “repetition is funny” model. Hells, Sorkin can do it. Let’s find out if it sticks!

DOES ANYONE IN THE GFFA BELIEVE IN LOCKING THEIR CARS SHIPS? BECAUSE SERIOUSLY, THEY NEED TO START LOCKING THEIR SHIPS. I AM SO GLAD WE HAVE WRITTEN THAT AS A PLOT POINT AT LEAST ONCE (even if the fic’s not posted yet) BECAUSE THIS SEEMS TO BE A THING.

Apparently Zeb isn’t a furry? He kinda looks like he should be furry. But between the “rare hairless Wookiee” crack and him referring to Wookiees as “those hairy beasts” I guess not? Hrm. Hopefully that’s cleared up later!

If there’s one clear moment I loved, it was absolutely when Ezra realizes he’s in space, and the moment they go into hyperspeed. That was just beautiful. Wide-eyed AWE, for all that he immediately wants to go back home. THAT was well done.

Hopefully more coherent views:

It’s not a hot mess, but it does feel a bit across the board. Fine, it’s the first episode, those do that – especially when we don’t know yet how coherent a storyline this series is supposed to be. (Like, season-long arcs. Are those a thing? Yes I have seen later seasons but it was sporadic and I honestly don’t recall more than random beats, so I’m trying to approach this as a fresh slate.) It’s about introducing the characters and situations first and foremost.

And regarding that...it’s messy. Some things are just not meshing. I’ll probably save most of that for next time, after seeing more interactions, but meanwhile, the things that really jump out at me.

Ezra has been alone since he was about six. Fine. I desperately want him to be more feral. Dirty fighting, an absolute biter – you’ve already got him being good at getting out of spaces and away from people, but he comes across like he’s been on his own maaaybe 5 years tops? He’s too smooth. Also, it’s not clear yet if he’s used to his Force abilities or if that’s somehow awakening due to...age? Being exposed to Kanan? I am seriously hoping this gets addressed, but meanwhile I love the idea of an Ezra who just thinks it’s normal for him to be able to make impossible jumps or run incredibly fast or not be noticed (sometimes) when he tries really really hard. He doesn’t know why most folks can’t or don’t do that, but not his problem – just gives him an advantage. It’d be delightful to see that in contrast to a Kanan who’s been suppressing all things Jedi for literal YEARS (quite understandably), and now he’s weirded out by how good this kid is at some stuff. He’s just a natural at it, and that’s...disconcerting. Match that with how Kanan knows how to hone those skills, or use them in different ways, even if he’s not as GOOD at them, and you’d have a fascinating power dynamic going on.

Kanan and Hera are also off in a way that I think was just the animators not meshing with the writers, and the oversight was lacking there. Kanan’s look when Hera takes Ezra away so she can keep an eye on him – it was jealousy. Now, fine. That makes sense, all things considered, but at the same time it kinda set off my creep meter? Like, dude, this lady already called you “love” earlier and the power dynamics make it clear you’re second in command around here, I can understand being insecure about one’s place in an uncertain galaxy but that made it look like you thought there were going to be shenanigans going on in that cockpit which EW.

Is it the art style? Is this related to the face-punching instinct and me somehow really disliking this guy without grounds so far? I have no idea, but it’s also concerning.

The other bit of animation that bothered me was when Chopper drags Hera and Kanan in to find Ezra has discovered the lightsaber. Kanan is fierce, defensive, and sounding JUST this edge of holding on to civil behavior he would like his glowstick back, NOW PLEASE. Hera, meanwhile, is leaning against the doorframe – smirking? But when the camera turns and Ezra leaves the cabin, she’s frowning and looking grumpy. What even is going on with that? If it’s a set up of Ezra – 1, dick move, and 2, creepy.

End summary:

It seems like a weak start. No one grabs me as a sympathetic character I wanna claim, no one is actually likable to any degree. That’s literally just the first impression and not a killer factor, because first episodes can often be about wrong impressions – trying to stay positive. Hate the art style which is going to be a problem. Need to remember to blather on about team dynamics next episode.

Tsubasa: Trainwreck Chronicles

And Why Bee Train Personally Owes Me At Least a Grand; an Essay by Popular Demand

For those of you who might not know, I love Tsubasa Chronicle. So much. But for the love of Kurogane’s beautiful biceps is the anime awful. Now, I’m not one of those “manga purists” who always insists the manga is better than the anime, I tend to find them equal pretty often. This is not one of those cases.

Once upon a time CLAMP made a deal with Bee Train for a Tsubasa anime. Cardcaptor Sakura had done so well! CLAMP was a solid name to back! Bee Train had nothing to lose - except the trust of every CLAMP fan ever. I don’t know how hands on CLAMP (or rather Ohkawa) were in the production but I feel like “not at all” is a fairly solid guess. It was a mess folks. Production was rushed, story was disregarded, plot was cut up and Frankensteined back together, I’m not even going to talk about the English casting.

In fairness, it wasn’t without it’s good points. The soundtrack was flawless, the Japanese cast was amazing, and when Bee Train tried they really did manage to make the series look nice, which imo makes the rest of the subpar animation even more of a slap to the face. They even had some genuinely enjoyable filler episodes - the chibi episode and the Kero and Mokona episode are always the first to come to my mind - but overall? Not even a hot mess, just a mess. 

Under the cut we’ll go arc by arc. I’m not going to rewatch the series just to write this so forgive me if I’m missing facts or if something I say is slightly inaccurate. Also, beware of spoilers for the manga if you haven’t finished reading it. That means you Nick. I’ll write you up a spoiler free copy of this later. Anyway, let’s go.

Opening and introductions:

You’d think, as the start of your series, you’d want the first episode or two to look really nice right? Catch the eye, impress the new viewer. Not Bee Train! [x x] The whole thing is subpar at best. Syaoran and Sakura’s introduction isn’t so bad for the most part, they’re cute and Bee Train tried to add a little more interaction between them before Sakura loses her feathers, which I am all kinds of behind, but... there’s a point where they run from castle guards. And Syaoran sort of just... grabs her and runs and Sakura is left literally flapping in the wind? [x] Also Sakura looks stoned out of her mind in like 90% of the shots she’s in. Touya probably thinks Syaoran is giving her drugs. But honestly, I don’t have too many problems with how the intro happens, mostly just the way it looks.

Fai’s intro can go by with almost no comment aside from the fact that his face looks like it’s melting. Sadly, this is not the worse his face will ever look. Pretty meh.

Personally I think Kurogane’s intro got the short end of the stick visually and I’m not just saying that because he and Tomoyo are my favorites. They both look pretty awful and, as always, where’s the beef???

Also Yuuko deserved better. 

Hanshin:

If possible, the animation gets even lazier. We’ve added Mokona to the party and they cannot decide how big she is. I’m not being nitpicky either. Her size fluctuates wildly. Here are just a few examples set only in Hanshin. This problem persists throughout the series. Also I don’t know how to exactly put this into words but... everyone’s eyes are just extra jacked up. 

Plot wise we mostly follow canon. Until they decide Sakura should get more screen time. “Great idea!” I can hear you say. “We love Sakura!” Well so do I. Problem: she has one (1) feather to her name and is comatose. Sakura is not really going to do anything. Yet the camera keeps going back to her- oh wait she’s awake. Sort of. Oh she’s getting dressed now, we even get a very weird little montage of her trying on clothes. Now she’s wandering the town, meets up with the leader of the Mohawk Gang whose kudan Kurogane beat the crap out of. Luckily she’s a super cute girl (who is barely conscious and doesn’t even talk? She’s so far from Mokona she probably can’t even understand these guys anyway but...) so they take her out to lunch instead of doing something Terrible. To the restaurant Touya works at. He serves her and doesn’t recognize her, meaning there is no Sakura in this world, at least not one related to him. This happens a lot.

In the anime Sakura is sometimes, for reasons unexplained and inconsistent, “drawn” to her feathers. She’s looking for her feather. There is an absurd Looney Tunes moment where she climbs some sort of tall thing (oil rig? construction site? world’s weirdest flag pole?) and jumps off of it before Syaoran and Co. (who have located her after Arashi, who would never have lost track of her in the first place let’s be real, tells them she’s gone AWOL) can stop her.

And then she flies. Literally and truly fucking flies. Through the sky. Thanks I hate it. 

Syaoran catches her, brings her back home, and the story pretty much continues. One fun change was that the whole family had to share a room, they didn’t get separated like in the manga, so we get treated to this Gay Fucking Scene(tm) of Kurogane waking up and the first thing he sees if Fai sleeping while angelic music plays in the background. So that was nice.

Oh god hang on, I had to come back and add this because I literally always forget: Kurogane sees a version of Tomoyo in this world and goes running after her, leaving Fai and Syaoran to meet Touya and Yukito on their own. This results in both of them missing Kurogane’s kudan fight and Kurogane missing the “same face, different person” talk/reminder. They still can’t draw Tomoyo.

Koryo:

Where’s the beef?

Much in the spirit of Hanshin, Koryo keeps mostly to the plot and has overall meh animation with a few choice moments of dear god why. Surprisingly, they made a few changes that I didn’t hate - the village had gotten a group of rebels together against the Ryanban. He also stole Chu’nyan’s mother’s body, making it so that her spirit could never find peace, making him even more of a dick.

This is where we see the first instance of the anime really being geared towards younger audiences than CLAMP had planned for. In the manga Sakura wins everyone new clothes via dice gambling, but in the anime she wins a lottery. Not a big deal, but we see more of this. Another thing change is that there’s a whole secondary plot added to everything when they try to, again, give Sakura a more active role. There are better ways to do this, but Bee Train sort of just tosses her into action and then tosses Syaoran in after her. It’s always bad and pointless and never amounts to anything. 

Anyway, she ends up inside the castle, somehow Syaoran manages to follow after her. Goodness knows what the dads are up to. (Probably this.) Some Really Weird Stuff happens and from what I remember the spirit of Chu-nyan’s mother hops a ride out of the castle with Sakura. Who, uhh, teleports her and Syaoran out. Yeah.

The rest of the arc goes pretty much how the manga does with a handful of minor changes - like the fact that Kurogane never bought a manga in Hanshin, so in order to block Kiishim’s killing blow he’s tucked the hammer he was using to fix the roof in his shirt, which is a much smaller shield than a whole ass book and I think that’s dumb. Still can’t get Mokona’s size right, to awkward and hilarious results.

And remember kids, we won’t show you dice but we will show you this.

Big Lake and Shipper Fish:

The animation in this part is actually pretty nice. Considering. The things they changed were needless and weird.

Sakura and the fish talk. How? Why? We don’t know, it’s never explained or examined. We are meant to accept it Because Sakura, which only works most of the time. The fish tries to tell Sakura that she knows Syaoran - we all know this will not and cannot work. Why does this happen? What was the point of adding this? It is so weird and awkward. It messes up the flow and is so extra. I understand your desires Shipper Fish, but please, let things take their course.

Jade:

Fuck you and fuck your animation. It looks The Worst, which is a bummer because this world changes the fewest amount of things. Anything I could point out are really minor:

somehow Fai can read

they never show how the family gets their clothes, and 99% of the scene in the tavern is skipped

breaking and entering!

Mokona bites Kurogane in the ass

they don’t have horses

no Kuro-dork looking at the snow like an excited child

they nerf Kurogane’s BAMF

the feather isn’t hidden behind a wall, they need the pure hearts of children?

Kyle was a way lazier villain 

Filler #1 - Lightning Jazz Hands:

Alright, that looked neat as hell, I’ll admit. My compliments end here.

Story: nosy little shits got themselves cursed. Gonna fight in a competition to win a Big Magic. Is the Big Magic a feather? Stay tuned! (It’s not, because then the girl would die and that would be Too Sad.)

So the people in this country can shoot lightning out of their hands, that would be awesome and possibly scary, but I guess Kurogane is water/ground type because he gets it and only says, and I quote, “it tingles”. So your lightning powers mean nothing, add no stakes, and the Fam can’t do it so what is the point?

This filler is also famous for its KuroFai baiting, which is impressive, seeing as the anime tried very hard to make them Not Gay. I mean it failed but yeah.

Syaoran is the only fighter they have left because Kurogane and Fai are children and Sakura is making friends with the cursed girl. Keefer... Keepha... fights Syaoran, and obviously Syaoran wins because we’re supposed to think this is a feather. They really play it up to, even after we learn the Big Magic isn’t a feather Syaoran still hesitates before handing it over. For dramatics I guess? I don’t know, there’s literally no reason for him to not give it to the needy couple.

Boring filler. Only fun was watching Kurogane get excited over fighting people.

Magic Mistake

    I finally had all the materials for the spell. It had taken me awhile to get the courage to get them all but  they were all  in front of me, now all I had to do was arrange and work the spell. I had been thinking about this spell for months now, slowly building it and creating it but the truth was that it scared me.

   It was scary to think that if it worked, I would finally have someone to like and someone that would like me back.

   I felt so pathetic when I really thought  about what I was about to do. Crazy Danielle, so lonely, so desperate that she needed a spell just to attract at least one friend. The only reason I had decided to do the spell was because it was the only spell I could find after months of research that did not involve forcing someone to be my friend. I wasn’t interested in having a zombie friend. The spell would only make me seem more interesting to others, or at least that what I got from the translations I could find.

   Ok, maybe I was a little bit desperate.

   This spell was going to suck up all of my energy and I was already pretty tired from a long day of work at the office. Taking care of myself before the spell was important, so I took a quick hot shower that I followed with making myself some bacon and two eggs with some cheese on the side for dinner.

   Right after I went to my room to get dressed. I picked a chunky dark burgundy sweater and black leggings, I decided against wearing shoes and finished getting ready by braiding my wavy shoulder length purple hair. I always like to wear something pretty to get me in the mood to cast a spell.

   Silently I stood in front of the mirror feeling nervous. I’ve done spell work hundreds of times before, this should be piece of cake! Right?

   Maybe I had spent so much time by myself that once I finally had an opportunity to connect with another human being I was freaking out. Me and my best friend lost contact a few years ago before social media became big, I’d looked her up but could never find her. I’ve been by myself ever since. No close family or friends.

   This is why I needed to do this.

   I couldn’t continue being an apathetic antisocial weirdo all my life. At least I could be a weirdo with someone else.

   Eventually I got all the materials from  the the small desk in my bedroom and placed them inside the salt circle I’d formed on the floor. The desk serves as my shrine and  I’ve been working on it for a few years now: athame, incense, bowl with Himalayan salt, candles, and statuettes of various goddesses I worshipped.

   The spell called for a green and pink candle which I placed in front of me as I lit them. It called for a necklace to charge with energy. I decided to use one I’ve had for a while with a silver star. Next I got out paper, a quill, and an ink pot that contained red ink. I  cleared my mind before focusing positive energy towards the  necklace.

   Once I said a few quick words thanking the universe for all of her blessings, I began chanting. I grabbed the athame and pricked my index finger.  I let the blood drip into the ink pot. I grabbed the quill and while still chanting I began writing down what I wanted in a friend.

   The list was long but in no way did I expect my new friend to fulfill the whole thing, I just wrote all the good qualities I could think of.

   Still chanting, I could feel the energy building up around me as I repeated the spell over and over again while concentrating all of my energy on the necklace. My heart was beating faster and faster.

   I could feel myself losing control of my body as I repeated the spell one more time and then…

   Nothing.

   Nothing happened at all. The candles went out and I was left alone in the dark feeling sad and tired. I looked at the necklace and it just looked like an ordinary necklace. I’d used a lot of energy for a spell that I wasn’t even sure worked. Usually I would feel it click inside of me. Like a thumbs up from the universe letting me know that the magic I’d just used had been received and I would see the fruits of my hard work soon.

   Feeling frustrated and tired,  I  took off my clothes and went to bed still wearing all of my make up. I felt so embarrassed about the whole thing. Not only was it a desperate and needy spell but to add to the humiliation, it didn’t even work.

   Tomorrow was another work day, so I might as well go to bed so I can wake up early. I am well aware that I sound like an old lady, but I live an old lady’s life. Multiple cats included and everything.

   That Saturday I woke up early and decided to go to the farmers market to get some veggies. After looking at my closet for half an hour I ended up wearing a short black dress with a white peter pan collar, a thick grey cardigan that was too big on me, black tights, and my favorite grey booties. On the way out I saw the star necklace I used on the spell a few nights ago and put it on.

   There weren’t that many choices at the market that day since it was already fall. I walked around and looked at the booths a few times, bought a few herbs to dry, but not much caught my attention. It was a slow day and I didn’t want to  stay long.  For some reason I was fidgety the whole time. I felt like someone was watching me all morning but every time I looked around it was obvious no one was paying attention to me.

   Finally I found a booth that was selling blackberries so I approached to take a better look at them.

   “We just got them yesterday morning. The last of the season!” said the nice lady behind the counter. I decided to buy some, so I reached out to grab them but someone else got them before I did.

   I quickly turned my head, mad at whoever took my blackberries. I already had a few select words in mind for the rude dude that obviously saw that I was going to get them and grabbed them anyway. I opened my mouth to talk but that’s when I realized that it was Loki, the evil guy that destroyed half of New York City. I closed my mouth as soon as I realized it was him but he noticed how angry I was.

   “Oh, I apologize, are these yours? I didn’t mean to take them from you” he said with a wolfish smile while handing me the blackberries “By the way, that’s a lovely necklace you are wearing, little witch.”

   I was so freaked out by the whole thing that I could barely talk. All I could do was shake my head and quickly walk away from the whole thing. How disrespectful! Calling me little witch and taking the blackberries that were obviously mine!

   On the way to my car I realized I needed to control my anger, I could have gotten killed by the villainous god of Asgard. The fear I felt when I looked into his deep green eyes was something that I knew would haunt me for years to come.

   I nervously looked back expecting him to be gone but he was just standing there, staring at me as I walked faster and faster away.

   When I finally got to my car I realized I was still holding the blackberries.  I forgot to pay for them and now it was too late to go back.

   On the way home I was still out of sorts, so I got myself donuts and coffee because I hadn’t eaten breakfast yet plus some food might do me good to calm my nerves. It’s not everyday that I could say I had an encounter with Loki.

   Once I got home I ate two donuts with my coffee while watching TV, but it quickly became obvious that I woke up too early and sleep won me over. It seems that the orange blossom water I added to my coffee was kicking in, my body didn’t even care that I was halfway through a Doctor Who episode.

   I don’t know for how long I slept, but it was a deep slumber filled with weird dreams about someone watching me. His green eyes just stared at me and talked in a language I couldn’t understand. In the dream I felt small and vulnerable, unable to escape his gaze.

   I woke up all sweaty and confused, it took me a few minutes to realize that it was already night time. After around fifteen minutes of trying to wake up I went to the bathroom and took a shower. I brushed my teeth and put on my pajamas before feeding my cats, Gouda and Cheddar. This morning had been enough excitement for me, I was ready to watch movies all night.

   I was in the kitchen getting myself a giant bowl of milk and cereal when I received a text message. It was Jenna from work: I feel like going out tonight. Wanna come? :)

   That was weird. We get along and gossip a little bit at work but we never interact outside of the office. Maybe the spell worked after all!

   I really didn’t feel like going out, but if the spell was working I didn’t want to spoil things. I quickly texted back and she sent me the address of where to meet up.

   I was so excited that I didn’t even know what to wear. I browsed through my closet but couldn’t make up my mind. In the end I went with dark blue skinny jeans and a dark purple sweater with white hearts all over it since purple matches with my olive skin. I put on once more my grey booties and grabbed my star necklace as I was walking out the door. I felt like nothing could go wrong tonight!

My parents have been paying for me to get skating lessons every week for the last fifteen years but I never actually attended any of the lessons and I spent the money on marble busts instead. Now they want me to perform to ‘Stammi Vicino’ at their wedding anniversary on Saturday.

If you can teach me, be here at Ice Castle tomorrow at 7:27am with an extra pair of skates. I am a fast learner (well, at least my dog Makkachin is–it took me only two weeks to teach him how to roll over) so I am pretty sure I will pick it up quickly. so im on season 3 episode 7 and here are my thoughts as of this moment:

ugh this show is so good, like insanely good. i feel like most of the time the characterization was wonderful. claude was my favorite, so its no surprise i like claude and leith the best. i didn’t like francis most of the time while he was alive but i missed his presence on the show. bash was an absolute gem. adelaide kane is so hot oml i died multiple times. i really enjoyed watching it!!!
