hello ! so first and foremost, my full name is erilyn. i go back 'eri' as a nickname. i started this blog because i love to write & recently got into the marauders fandom as a joke, but now i'm emotionally attached. there's no turning back now, i suppose

this is going to sound super pick-me, but i swear it's true. normally, when i have a conversation with people, i try to keep the topic more directed toward them because i have a hard time talking about myself. so i very sincerely apologize if this post is structured weird, worded strange, or anything like that. i'm genuinely struggling suuuper badly right now #help

okay, anyway ! some of my favorite to do are read, write, listen to music, and snuggle my cats. it's a pretty short / bland list of grandma hobbies, but i love them more than life itself.

one of my favorite books is obviously atyd, it's what i read to first get involved in this little community, so it will forever hold a dear place in my heart. regardless of how basic of an answer it comes off to be. but as for physical (non-fanfic) books, my favorite is definitely powerless by lauren roberts.

i've been writing for as long as i can remember. there are pictures of me as a baby writing shit down as though it actually meant something. but when i was thirteen, i decided to actually write for a purpose ⎯ which would make my work mean something in an attempt to make baby eri proud. i've written a TON of short stories, and a few original completed books. none of which are published, of course. my imposter syndrome is far too severe for that kind of commitment..

since i mentioned music, i'd love to list some of my favorite artists (i say that as if anyone actually gives a shit). my all time, forever number one favorite is hozier. he's everything to me. his music means so much, and the poetic nature behind his lyrics is everything i strive for my own writing to come off as. a few other artists i enjoy : lana del ray , david bowie , noah khan , the weeknd , queen , mac miller , the lumineers , coldplay , benson boone , arctic monkeys , the smiths , rhcp (red hot chili peppers). as well as so so so so many more. my music taste is honestly all over the place, and i apologize, but i wouldn't trade it for the world because it's literally entangled into my soul & makes me who i am.

oh my god now i get to yap about my cats! AHH!

i have two kittens (they're over a year old now, but i will forever & always see them as my little baby kittens, fuck off). their names are indie & teeves. indie is super cuddly and loves her momma to death. she hides from everyone who isn't me, and will scratch you if you look at me the wrong way. teeves, on the other hand, is waaaay less sociable. she hides from everyone ⎯ like indie. but unlike her sister, teeves hides from me as well. nobody can ever find her unless she eating or using the bathroom. i'm a tad bit offended by her ignorance, but as long as she's happy i'm happy.

hi hello i would love to give you a snippet but unfortunately this doc is just me screaming about my ideas atm, i don't have a single word of the actual content written.

the premise is essentially i'm gonna write a harry potter oneshot based on each song on noah kahan's album stick season, because he's brilliant and i've been listening to it non-stop. my original thought was to keep it to the marauders era, but then i thought about ron feeling like he's second best in so many aspects of his life and how that's literally the song come over, so i think it's gonna just be kind of random and only connected by the fact that they're harry potter based.

A Quiet Place Part II (2021)

A Quiet Place Part II is at least as good as the original, which says a lot. Tense, tightly written, with strong performances and a story that’s worth telling, the wait's been worth it.

Following the events of the first film, Evelyn (Emily Blunt), and her children Regan (Milicent Simmonds), and Marcus (Noah Jupe) are searching for refuge and a way to care for the new baby. Armed with a new weapon against the blind creatures who've wiped out most of humanity, they hope a former family friend, Emmett (Cylian Murphy), will be willing to help.

This Part II gets things right by asking a simple question: “then what?”. The Abbott family have lost their home and their father but they’ve gained knowledge about the aliens. There’s hope, though the victory they scored at the end of the first movie was small. The next step is to share their discovery with the world but venturing outside means interacting with other people. I know what you’re thinking. This is a post-apocalyptic film. Cue the marauders and scavengers. One of my favorite things about A Quiet Place Part II is that it addresses the fact that when any disaster strikes, we can expect the worst of humanity to come out… but also the best. Regan will not let her father's sacrifice go in vain. She doesn't blame her brother for being afraid or her mother for wanting to take care of what the family has left so she decides to go out on her own. She’s brave, self-sufficient, and tough. So what if she’s unable to hear the monsters as they creep towards her? Her resolve will compensate.

Though the film cannot surprise us the way its predecessor did, the top-notch writing makes up for it. I know it doesn’t sound like much for actions to have consequences and tie into each other but writer/director John Krasinski keeps wowing you. In most movies, you can see what’s coming next simply by keeping track of what the camera highlights. Here, actions create ripples with multiple consequences. An object left behind means the first character won't have it in a way that makes a scene more intense than it could've possibly been otherwise. Then, a second person will pick it up later. You thought you knew where the consequences would end but it was just the beginning. Everything is properly foreshadowed but there’s so much going back to things, and things setting up other things that you don’t see what’s coming next. You’re not waiting for the characters to catch up to you, you’re running alongside them.

A Quiet Place Part II builds upon its world, it enriches your relationship with the characters through flashbacks (this is where John Krasinski gets to reprise his role) and growth. Tension is masterfully generated by separating the family and keeping you wondering what's coming next, revealing a dire situation, then reversing it. You get to breathe just enough for things to begin again - all largely through its visuals and performances rather than dialogue. Even in a non-pandemic year, this would be one of the summer's highlights.   (July 16, 2021)

I must admit, in recent years I’ve pretty much had my fill of post-apocalyptic thrillers. Last summer, when I reviewed It Comes at Night, I suggested that they put a moratorium on the whole genre, since it had become so stagnant and cliched in its storytelling. I was wondering if it was even possible to make a movie in this style that was not just bleak and depressing.

Which brings us to A Quiet Place, which has done a good deal towards resurrecting my faith in the filmmaking style. A Quiet Place is not only a very good post-apocalyptic thriller, it is a very good thriller in general. It does not stray too far from the normal formula, and yet is adds a sense of compassion and several unique scenarios to the playing field.

It is certainly the first end of the world survival flick in a long time where I actually cared who lived and died in the end.

A Quiet Place takes place in the farm country of Northern New York state, in the very near future, after the human race has been decimated by a murderous breed of aliens. (I assume they are space aliens, though this is never completely confirmed, as many things are left a mystery in the world.) These marauding monsters are completely blind, so they hunt by sense of hearing. If you make a loud sound, they will be all over you in no time.

The heroes of the story are Lee and Evelyn Abbott (co-writer/director John Krasinski and his real-life wife Emily Blunt), a young farming couple with three children and another one on the way. (The youngest son is killed by the aliens in a taut prologue.) In the limited time since the alien attack, the family has learned to be completely quiet, using sign language and occasional whispers to communicate.

In fact, the first non-whispered and/or hand-signed dialogue happens about 45 minutes into the movie. The sense of silence is oppressive, to the point where one scene where Krasinski and Blunt dance in the basement with shared earbuds to Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” just hearing the music is almost shocking.

However, it is nearly impossible to be completely quiet all the time, and every time they make a noise they must evade these alien killing machines.

There are only eight actors in the entirety of A Quiet Place, and one is a newborn baby, one character is already dead when we meet her, and her husband dies soon after. There is even a limited number of the monsters – three – adding to the claustrophobia of the situation.

It is a taut and scary predicament, and Krasinski and co-writers Bryan Woods and Scott Beck keep ratcheting up the tension exponentially. Truth to be told, the aliens are scarier as mysterious forces in the shadows; once we see them closeup they are kind of ridiculous looking. However, you can say that about most film aliens, and if they are kind of weird looking, that does not dampen their sense of malevolent menace.

As the story twists and turns its way to its shocking – if not necessarily completely surprising – climax, you have come to relate with this poor family and their hellish predicament, and each and every danger which crosses their path becomes more disturbing.

A Quiet Place is proof that you can take a genre which is drowning in its own morass of clichés and overkill, give it some serious, smart consideration, and come out with something truly special.
