3D Gillion WIP

RAAGGHHH I have been in blender hell for like 3 weeks and I have nearly finished this low poly model of Gillion!!! Features a responsive 2d facial animation rig :3 I just have some bones to finish adding drivers to (and a sword and environment to model and texture) and then he is ready to animate!!! (nerd shit rant under cut)

I have been having a lot of fun learning blender!! in comparison to my first model in March of this year I think I have certainly come a long way!

Bonus: I am finally starting to understand the evil spaghetti

Here is the nodes for the 2d facial animation rig in all their glory! it's a whole process but a lot of fun I was using principled BSDF for shading up until the point of actually making the face rig which... does not work if you add a bunch of colour mix nodes so I had to switch to diffuse BSDF. If you're interested in learning how to make a rig this is the tutorial I followed it only covers the eyes but you can just copy the steps for making the eyes and use it to make additional bones for the mouth & eyebrows, adding them through colour mix nodes with alpha channels set to your textures like in my image!

I have also been using the pribambase plugin & aseprite to create my textures which I highly recommend! asesprite honestly is such a wonderful and intuitive program I had never made pixel art before starting this project and I know I certainly could be doing better (I am fully aware the model has mixels but I honestly don't hate the look personally which I know isn't the common take but whatever) but for my first time doing pixel art I'd say it's not too bad! Pribambase is a bit of a pain to set up now since the original creator has discontinued it and is no longer supporting it but it is still possible to find and use I am happy to teach anyone who would like to know!

Once the model is done I will be releasing my blender files & texture files as free to use for anyone who wants to animate with it or just play around & deconstruct! (with the exception of my animations) I am only learning myself so idk how useful they'll be but I would not have been able to make this model if it wasn't for kind modellers online who have released their files to deconstruct and learn from.

I have many plans for future blender projects all currently jrwi related (the brainrot is intense rn) & I am very excited to keep learning as I go! I currently have plans to make low-poly models of all the riptide pirates, the pd & the godslayers with animations in mind :p and I really wanna try some 3d sculpting (and maybe 3d printing) which I have wiwi in mind for... if any of these ideas get finished I will also release those models for free :)

i played myself. putting on my clown shoes and makeup.

i had this idea for an au of inquisition, bc when i played it i had a mage lavellan, and i was a bit like "damn, is everyone really ok with yet another apostate being found at the scene of a giant explosion that kills the chantry leadership? anders 2.0, except the apostate is a dalish heathen this time, and doesn't even have any rich friends or 7 years of running a free clinic in their favour? is one vague female silhouette in the rift REALLY enough to make any meaningful number of people think that it's andraste there?"

and it was very convenient that the fade memory broadcast says things that make your character seem more innocent of the explosion, people actually believe it despite usually distrusting the fade, and corypheus speaks understandably rather than in ancient tevene, haha.

so, imagine if the inquisition was actually the antagonist. like the game starts, you get aggressively frogmarched down to the breach at sword point, the mood in haven is either "angry terrified mob" or "take this dangerous criminal to orlais for imprisonment and interrogation". and then there's no clear evidence found at the breach to make you less likely as a suspect.

so after partially sealing the breach and blacking out: rather than waking in a nice room with a starstruck servant, you wake up in a cell.

outside your cell, the mood is now like 90% angry mob, and 10% "but, what if that lady in the rift was andraste...? 🤔" which is still not enough to save you from execution. so, it's a prison break where solas, varric, leliana, and maybe cassandra get you out of jail! you are now pursued by chantry forces who have launched an inquisition. they see you as a dangerous criminal, and any sympathizers as heretics.

you flee down the frostback mountains, and what do you know. that's where rainesfere is. which is where bann teagan (the one and only) lives. he's the type of conscientious guy who'll be out fighting demons to protect the town, while also having an affair with his brother's wife (don't worry about it). so he's impressed when you swoop in and close the rifts for him, and offers to quietly shelter you from the chantry if you continue doing that.

rainesfere becomes the haven equivalent of your pre-skyhold base. teagan replaces cullen as your military advisor. you run around the map trying to still secure allies to support your cause of permanently sealing the breach, and more and more people start whispering about you being blessed by andraste. bc you are the one closing the rifts, when the chantry is not. which develops an interesting schism in the chantry faithful, and the chantry becomes even more desperate to regain legitimacy.

and! there could be a whole side plot where cassandra or cullen are antagonists for the first third of the game. they would be likely to reluctantly follow orders if told to arrest you, and cullen already has enough beef about explosions killing chantry leaders on his watch. after a few encounters, you win them over through the Marketplace Of Ideas/doing something cool enough that they buy into the andraste thing, and they can abandon the chantry and join you instead.

also, instead of being called the Herald at first (bc it's not a popular theory that you are one) you can be called the Anchorite.

Scarlet Hollow decision tree

People occasionally ask to see a decision tree for Scarlet Hollow, so a while back I put one together for episodes 1-4! It’s not comprehensive, as most scenes at this point have at least some variation due to any number of tracked variables, but it accounts for most of the really major deviations.

For those who don’t want spoilers but would like to hear about how we kinda structure the game: I like to talk about it as more of a braid than a tree, which is not a new concept or anything, but I feel like it helps other narrative designers understand how to limit the absolute vastness that you can get with branching structures. The narrative branches off at decision nodes, but instead of continuing down significantly different routes, it comes back together at key moments. So there’s a single narrative throughline to the game-- events unfold in the town and you witness them in some capacity, but your perspective on them, who you’re with, the options available to you, all these are impacted by other choices you’ve made along the way, including the character traits you chose at the start of the game.

It’s not necessarily easier than doing routes, since it means Tony and I have to keep track of a ridiculous number of little variations including one-off dialogue choices players have made AND steering players to the important narrative moments can be tricky, but I think it makes for an interesting player experience! People get so excited when, say, a line at the end of Episode 4 calls back to something they said when they first met Tabitha at the beginning of Episode 1.

ANYWAY, HUGE SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT, do not proceed if you don’t want to know about basically everything that’s currently in the game!

This semester my assignment was to design and animate a 2D character rig from scratch! So I present. the one and only: Juniper Uppercut!!

Beloved Baby of CPUK fame, I just really wanted to see this lil goober move! More design details under the cut...

Despite already having a design I already really liked, I played around with the specific style. I even realized I liked having her buns up top, which will now be a permanent change to her design!

Then was the time for the turnaround! We were only going to animate one view, but this semester was also about learning the process of creating a rig from scratch and as something you can pass off to someone else to work on professionally. Junie was fairly simple to spin around, given her mostly symmetrical shape. She would also need extra drawings for hand and facial replacements, to give her more complex motion.

The next step was to Plan through annotating! While I was being taught, this was still my first time ever doing this, so some specifics either never happened or had to be reworked as I was building.

Finally, I built out the rig! Each part of Juniper's body was drawn on a separate layer, organized into larger groups, then all brought together under lots and lots of pegs. My favorite part was trying to organize the absolute spaghetti pile that was my node view into this less spaghetti-like view. I learned a rudimentary amount about cutters in order to mask parts of the body into each other. Replacements were organized and added, giving her even more fun expressions. All that was left was to animate!

I'm so happy I was able to bring my silly girl to life! Who knows if I'll be able to use this rig in any other projects, but I really wanted Junie to be the character that I could work with more. Made a really complex procedural oxidised copper material in Blender.

Nodes below, but beware, for it is Rube Goldberg-esque spaghetti-code and makes very little sense unless you know how Blender's material-nodes work.

I can't be bothered to explain this. Feel free to recreate this yourself if you want to figure it out.

If it isn’t too much trouble, would you be able to recommend tutorials when it comes specifically to extracting custom character models? I’ve found something called Ninja Ripper which looks to get the base models and meshes but I can’t find a tutorial for anything texture or appearance wise.

hello! I wouldn't use ninjaripper for models since they aren't rigged, but it is good for backgrounds and stuff and that's what i use for my rips.

Here are a few great video tutorials specifically about BG3 meshes:

Druundev's Custom Armor // focuses more on armor meshes

Padme4000's BG3 Editing Heads in Blender 2.92 + 2.79 // I like this one because it shows how to snap heads to the bodies to fix seams

The tutorial by Druundev goes over briefly finding the base MSK for nonskin textures, but most of the textures will be within your VirtualTextures. You can use Ezechi's Virtual Texture Renamer to make sense of them so you can easily find them and recolor them either with node spaghetti or in your preferred texture editor with the MSK as a guide.

You can also use this tool to get your character's together too! I hope all this helps!!

edit to add on: Volno's Texture Toolbox is also great for the main textures. The main texture files you will need will be the _CLEA, _HMVY, and _NORM. They will most likely be in the UnpackedData\Textures\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Models file paths or UnpackedData\Textures\Generated\Public\SharedDev\Assets\Characters\_Models for NPCs. For Volno, you can follow the shader inputs and just change the files to the correct ones. You will have to play with the skin shader inputs to get the right colors and tones, however, since not all color presets are there. There is a PDF in the file to help set it up.

So, while waiting for that edx certificate, I started to get myself familiar with GODOT

I was struggling a bit in the beginning.

The "GETTING STARTED" section of the Godot documentation is a rather lacluster tutorial, and following the instruction, on how-to make my first game, have left me with only a vague understanding on how the engine works.

Thankfully this tutorial by Brakeys came and saved me

But instead of simply following the tutorial step by step, I took another approach entirely.

Because, if you want to find out something, you need to fuck around yourself.

So I made my own project, while loosely following the tutorial.

And I´m proud to report to have learned quite a bit that way. I finally wrapped my head around how signals work, learned a bit about the function of several nodes, and some other miscellaneous stuff as well.

I got inspired to make this game while playing The Battle Cats, where one of the crazed cat stages is named flappy cat.

The only thing missing is and ending screen, that displays the players current and highest score, but I couldn´t find the asset for that on the battle cats wiki.

Compared to my first two attempts at creating a videogame, this one actually looks finished!

Which is a surprise, considering the questionable coding decisions I had to make, as I brute-forced my way through this project, trying to make the program work.
