ohh you are very sweet but it is in fact not my au, it’s @c-kiddo’s!! but it’s almost 2 and i can talk out of my ass for a little because i have thought about it briefly so!! fair warning this is with very little prior concept

mostly i just imagine them all as victors from various seasons who each have a really particular reputation. maybe the season would be about a quell, or maybe it would just be them as mentors.

-yasha and cad both have hair that went completely white and has since grown back out at the roots, but capitol dressers always die it back, yasha to symbolize this really messed up theme of purity and redemption, “rescued” from district 12 and having earned what’s supposed to be freedom, and cad because he gets called a ghost, just totally vanished during his year and was somehow the last one standing.

-caleb was moved to district 3 for an eventual scholarship but ended up getting picked, and set a fire that took out most of the contestants, including his partner.

-jester’s from district 4 and just point-blank refuses to talk about her year. her mother is pretty high up in the capitol and it’s suspected jester’s year was rigged when she pissed off one of marion’s clients.

-molly‘s been in the capitol for years and stays with yasha but was a tribute for district 8, although seemingly he had no family there and just kind of. appeared the day his name was drawn.

-veth is from district 9 and was absolutely not slated to win whatsoever after she volunteered to replace yeza, but. a switch flipped in the arena and she was pretty ruthless.

-fjord’s also from 4, and his mentor went missing right before the games started and he seemingly caught the attention of a patron who pretty consistently sent him gifts.

-beau’s from district 1, and is supposedly from a group that trains careers that she was sent to when she was kicked out but is actually a front for a underground rebel group, and finds this out after she wins from dairon.

they are. a tired mess of a group and are friends because there are just. so few people who get it, and they start getting involved with underground stuff via beau but it takes a long time both for things to pick up and for them to actually. believe it can go anywhere.

one of my fave DM moments was when I'd had the players go down into a sewer to rescue a little kid and I put a bed and lantern down there for flavour. One of the PCs wanted to go see who was living in the sewer but the others vetoed it, and later one of the other players told me he figured the bed was just for flavour and didn't want to put me on the spot XD

give that player a magic sword asap

I’m participating in Trick or Treat and Shipoween!  The nomination and request periods are already over, but you can still write treats or just wait for the collection reveals to read the Halloween stories!  They typically show up every year in the fall.

I am participating in a heck of a lot of writing exchanges this year, if only to keep my brain from rotting during quarantine.  I generally find out about them via the Bangs Festivals and Exchanges threads on fail_fandomanon.dreamwidth.org, but there’s also a discord server called Exchanges After Dark and a community called fandomcalender.dreamwidth.org, if those are easier or more pleasant for you to navigate.

In terms of my actual belief structure, I’m an agnostic (by which I mean I think questions about deity/s are inherently unanswerable and also irrelevant) with vague animist/pantheist leanings and a Thing for lighting candles and group singing, but while it took me years and a lot of questioning to hammer that stuff out, my UU affiliation has never been in question -- even though I am a heathen who drinks tea at coffee hour. *wry*

I appreciate a religion that encourages people to find our own answers and questions. :)

Hi! I just found your blog and I'm loving seeing updates on all your pets. I love snakes and have thought about getting one, but at the age of 22, it's really hard to imagine committing to a pet for ten to twenty years when that's such a big chunk of my lifespan so far! Do you have any thoughts or advice on that? (I think it's mostly about the perception of time and having no idea where in life I'll be in that amount of time, rather than, "wow, that's a lot of work.")

That’s 1000% understandable. I love all my pets but having a small zoo in my house means I can’t decide to pack up and take a seasonal parks job across the country, much as I might like to, or even take a vacation for more than a couple of days without a lot of planning. Luckily I do live with two other people who know how to take care of my birds, and who my birds like a lot. But it’s not like I can take them camping with me.

Snakes are pretty low-maintenance when compared to other pets--I can feed them beforehand and go somewhere for a week and have my housemates check in on them to make sure they’re clean and watered and misted, and I don’t think the snakes will be very bothered by my absence. But it does really help to leave them with someone who’s comfortable with them, who I know would be okay handling them if something happened while I was away.

There are very few things we do entirely alone in life, and if you have a trusted network of animal-loving friends, it can make pet care much easier. I recommend having animal-loving friends in general.

I admit, though, a couple weeks after I found myself committed to caring for Mousetrap, I looked up a black rat snake’s potential lifespan and was aghast to find that he might live to be over 30 years old. Considering he could not possibly have been more than 4 years old when I rescued him (he was more likely 2), this is a lot of years of snake to have accidentally fall into one’s lap.

Hi so I was going through your gansey tag and I need to read TRC again but also I was thinking about how how extremely glad I am to have rep of a flirtationship that doesn't work and they end up being friends and she dates someone else ? I feel like a lot of the time media is all just "a ends up with b for ever and ever" or "a and b broke up and hate each other now" but adam/blue was just, like, yeah. Something else.

Honestly same!! the first time i read TRC I loved that Blue and Adam were more interested in each other at first, even though the reader knows from the get-go that it probably won’t last. it let Blue and Gansey’s relationship develop more gradually (totally winning me over, I expected to find them very tiresome and I was pleasantly surprised when I was wrong), and I also thought it was just... honestly nice? to see a totally average teen relationship that doesn’t work out but in a completely basic way, if that makes sense.... It’s a blip of normal youthful human messiness in the middle of a fantasy tree-magic tilt-a-whirl and I appreciate that! 

It’s exactly how you say it, YA fiction feels like it’s either “they’re in love forever against all the odds despite being 16″ or “they broke up and hate each other forever with much vitriol and bitterness.” Thanks to library school I do get why many teen readers are down with that in their fiction, but it’s still very refreshing to see something else! My one complaint is that I would have liked to see even more of Blue and Adam remaining friends in the later books.
