I’ve barely seen any art for the story about “Patti Pepperoni’s Playhouse,” on the nosleep subreddit, so I decided to try and contribute! This story is by u/disco-dingus, and I had lots of fun drawing Patti based off the description that was given! And it’s even featuring a little Jason Voorhees doll, since today is ALSO Friday the 13th! Have a nice Friday, everybody

i literally only go to a few very specific subreddits so reddit is actually really fun for me. theres cat pics and cool rocks and video game lore analysis and some pretty good original stories and a dedicated place for answer any “dumb” questions you might have without judgement. and of course the trans girls

Amazon fucks everyone over again
some of you may recall Neil Clarke's blog post on the deluge of AI-generated spam that has hit Clarkesworld Magazine's submissions queue.
well, Clarkesworld and other short fiction magazines like it are about to get another swift kick in the dick: Amazon is discontinuing their magazine subscription service (and replacing it with a new service that pays creators much, much less). of the very little money made in the short fiction market, most of it was coming from Amazon.
as Clarke points out in his editorial on the subject, "While there are plenty of people happily reading, listening to, and writing short fiction, a very disappointingly small percentage of those same people are actively paying for it."
short fiction is not dead. the existence of subreddits like r/NoSleep and blogs like @writing-prompt-s proves that. if you value these stories and you want to help writers get paid for their work, please consider checking out (and subscribing to) some of the following publications:
Analog Science Fiction and Fact
Apex Magazine
Asimov's Science Fiction
Clarkesworld Magazine
Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine
Fantasy & Science Fiction
Fantasy Magazine
Nightmare Magazine
many of these publications charge less than $5 USD per month for subscriptions, so if you've just dropped Netflix and have an extra $10/month lying around, you can instead support two fiction magazines full of interesting, original, well-written stories.
(feel free to reblog with your own favorite publications!)

Nosleep author new to Tumblr --- Here to say hi!
It's great to see you here!
In case you're a stranger stumbling across this, I am an author on r/nosleep over on Reddit. I write first person POV dark fantasy/horror stories, mostly with a light touch. Topics include but are not limited to fairy-infested theme parks, frustrated dimension hoppers struggling with unemployment and women in wedding dresses roaming haunted forests. If any of that sounds interesting to you, feel free to check out my Reddit account. Or maybe you'd care to take a look at my subreddit, r/CrypticPark. As of now, the bulk of my work can be found there.
I suppose everyone who's following this blog knows me from Reddit. I plan to post my stories here as well as to r/nosleep. I find that the landscape on that subreddit has changed a lot lately, and not exactly in the best way. So maybe branching out will do me and my creative work some good. Let's see how it goes!
I gotta admit, I'm not at all used to how Tumblr works, so this post is as much as a greeting as it is me dipping my toes into what's sure to be a raging sea. Do folks even post texts like these here? Guess I'll see. Have mercy on me, is what I'm saying. I'm about as social media-savvy as your stereotypical granny. In fact, I am typing this with my screen dangerously close to my face, squinting at the keyboard like a vole. Still, I'll try my best to figure out this platform and make your stay on my blog as pleasant as I possibly can. I admittedly had fun playing with colors and fonts for my profile, so I hope there'll be good things to come.
Thanks for following my stories! Cheers
XxGftc

"the cryptozoological imperative to create a world where cat-headed snakes are real"
Thank you for putting that into words!! I've grown increasingly frustrated with people whose only concern is whether folklore, mythology, and stories are "real" or not. It's like a poison. So many people are unable to take stories at face value (as reflections of humanity and the world humanity inhabits). I see it everywhere, from genuine folkloric studies to the NoSleep subreddit. Some people have an obsession with uncovering the "truth" behind stories, when the actual truth is just that humans need stories like they need air.
You’re welcome! Cryptozoology has truly ruined so many fascinating bits of folklore and mythology, and sadly the well has been poisoned so much that it’s sometimes hard to find the original accounts.

Major Coraline vibes I give off with my fae Oc I just realized. Lure in children with food, love and protection. May or may not eat them. Easy meals made out the desperation of children. Not to say they don’t prey on adults but that’s if they’re up for the hunt. Is definitely the subject of horror stories on like Reddit, “When I was a kid I lured out into the woods by a fae,” Nosleep subreddit kind of stuff. Has let children free in the past but it’s once in a blue moon. They just get attached to their favourites you know?
I love those reddit stories. Honestly one of my favorite stories of all time is "the Left Right Game" from r/nosleep(it has a podcast if you don't wanna read).
I love the pied piper you've created! Reminds me of how horror movies don't usually kill kids unless they really are driving home the monstrousness of the evil. The horror of going after something that is usually considered off limits to the genre. Reminds me that the fae really don't have limits in their horror.

Dropping a new short on NoSleep later...
It'll be fairly basic as far as my shorts go as I literally write about cults all the time, but never for that particular subreddit. We'll see what happens as it's not as easy to get engagement there these days

hey j, idk bout u but I’m a Reddit girlie and love the Two Hot Takes Podcast and Smosh’s Reddit vids (so recommend for other Reddit lovers), especially AITA subreddit. I’m currently listening to one of Smosh’s episodes and am absolutely flabbergasted, mind-exploded (it’s topic is unhinged stories) by all these stories and the audacities being described . Anyways, I can so see frat!peter and Trouble in the car or laying on his bed listening to them and them literally screaming that so-and-so is a major asshole. - 👹
oh.... i'm a reddit WHORE. tbh the only apps i use at this point are:: tumblr, reddit, youtube and instagram. twitter was my number one for a long time but mr elon ran that into the ground so fucking fast.
i hear you, and i see the vision, but i raise you to r/nosleep and listening to those youtube videos where people narrate the story and i tell you that some of them have trouble shaking in her boots and curling into peter.

Which subreddits would the ROs subscribe to?
Bonus: maybe r/AmITheA****** for Eliseo? 🤣
Oh man, it's been a while since I last been on Reddit. (How are you Redditors doing? Heard the site's sinking like Titanic over there)
Weylyn: r/Cooking and r/recipes (probably where he got his great cooking and food recipes from)
Fleur: Something kinda expected of her like r/Accounting and r/Gardening
Zephyrine: Probably r/cats (which is expected) and r/AskReddit
Eliseo: r/cursedmemes and r/cursedimages. I won't explain why.
Cooper: Most likely r/ChaoticGood and r/HellSomeMemes for someone like ya boi
Ophelia: r/D&Dmemes and r/NoSleep for sure

Say people do regain their memories after they come back from the Borderlands, whether entirely or in flashes - what does that do to a person? Your heart stops. You beat the odds, and somehow you survive, albeit bruised and bloody and scarred. And then the memories come back, and you realise - you went somewhere. You did unspeakable things. Unspeakable things were done to you. And sure, you chose to go back, but didn't you leave part of yourself behind? Didn't it change you, irrevocably? Do you believe it happened at all? Maybe it's just hallucinations. Something your brain came up with to make sense of it all, the terror of near-death, that confrontation with your own mortality. But no matter how much you try to convince yourself that's the case - you can't be sure. It feels so real.
So you seek out others. It's the age of the internet; somewhere there's a Discord server, or a subreddit, or some obscure messageboard, where people are whispering. Saying, it happened to me too. Saying, I was a teenager, I almost drowned, and now I dream of drowning other people. Saying, I'm trying to forget it. Saying, my family doesn't recognize me anymore. Saying, I came back but the others didn't, and everyone thinks I'm mourning them, but I know I'm the one who killed them.
And there's other people, who never went to the Borderlands, who are listening. Reading along, and sure, most of them will think it's all a lie or an RPG or a setup for a Nosleep story, but some of them get fascinated. Start to believe. Start to wonder.
What would it be like to go there? Can you send people there on purpose? What would it feel like, that kind of power?
How long until someone acts on their obsession?
