Father’s Day is dangerous for Robert Nurden. Childless not through choice but, as he puts it, “complacency, bad luck, bad judgment”, he tries to stay indoors and ignore the family celebrations outside.

But one year, he went for a walk. “I met family after family. There were children everywhere,” he remembered. “It was terrible. Just so painful. So many ambushes and triggers for my anguish.”

There is very little research into men who have not had children, although that is beginning to change. Research by Dr Robin Hadley has found that 25% of men over 42 do not have children – 5% more than women of the same age group.

Half of the men who are not fathers but wanted to be describe a huge grief and isolation from society. Almost 40% have experienced depression and a quarter feel a deep anger

Now 72, Nurden had a sheltered upbringing. Reaching adulthood, there was a lot he wanted to experience. “Having children was a very low priority. I was complacent: I just assumed it would happen,” he said.

It was not until he was in his early 40s that Nurden started to get broody. But by that point, he discovered, women of a similar age had already had children, if they were able or wanted to.

“I went into this 15-year period of not going into relationships or ending relationships quickly because I knew that person wasn’t going to want or be able to have a child with me – or that the relationship wasn’t going to be strong enough to last if we did have a child,” said Nurden.

He said high-profile older fathers breed complacency in ordinary men. “If I’m honest, even when I was in my 50s I believed that it might happen for me. But in real life, the Mick Jagger and Jon Snow-age fathers are actually very rare – and in any case, it’s medically not wise, as regards sperm quality.”

What compounded Nurden’s pain was that there was no public or private discussion about how men feel when circumstance leaves them unable to become fathers.

“There’s lots of publicity, quite rightly, about women and childlessness but men are very mute about this. Married men don’t want to hear it either: I’ve had men with children react with anger, as though they feel threatened, when I’ve tried to talk about my pain,” he said.

“I was mute too until recently, because as I aged, I found the regret grew into a great pain,” he added. “Unlike many other forms of grief, this compounds itself as it gets older: I wasn’t a father but now I’m not a grandfather. When I’m even older, I might find myself entirely alone.”

Nurden has published a book, I Always Wanted to be a Dad: Men Without Children, about his story and that of some other men. “It turns out that there is a lot of pain, regret and sadness out there,” he said.

Hadley, the researcher, is childless because although his wife had wanted children, by the time she and Hadley met, her age meant the risk of having one was too great. “I chose love but that doesn’t make the pain of not having children any less,” he said. “When a close colleague had his first child, I was so jealous that I couldn’t be in the same room as him.”

Being a father is a marker of status in many countries, said Hadley, but not in the west. “While there has recently been a lot more public discussion about how to be a good father, we still don’t have any narrative or celebration about how important it is for men to become a father in the first place,” he said.

Paul Goulden, the chair of Ageing Without Children, said that, along with the lack of public dialogue about becoming a father, he was “not convinced that there’s this Game of Thrones genetic push felt by men to have children”.

Instead, he said: “There’s this mistaken belief that men are fertile across their lifespan, so there’s no imperative to get on with it.”

That complacency persists because men without children historically have not spoken about their grief. But, Goulden said: “I hope Robert’s book will trigger a change in public dialogue around this issue. I think there’s an overwhelming sense of loneliness and fear out there about who is going to be there for these men, when they’re old and all alone.”

I wonder what their exes for these men would about them. Because the bar for Father's is so low that women showing they didn't want kids with them should really be a sign to do some soul searching.

Personal experience.......I think of my ex fiance who constantly said he wanted ro get married and have kids. However his actions said he wanted me to have the kids while he worked full time, he didn't believe in daycare so no job for me, and he would have to go to the gym almost everyday, he had a physically demanding job, and of course have his weekly card night with his buddies. And yes I stated all my objections but he had tunnel vision when it came to his fantasy family life. There's more but those were the issues relevant to this article.

even though bon is not biologically related to anyone in the paddock other than her dad, a lot of them see her as their kid because she really is. i think it’s hard not to grow attached to someone who is there, at your place of work, day in day out starting when that person is 5 years old. it also helps that said 5 year old is a little sponge for the work you do and is genuinely interested in it and can get so wrapped up in it but also still needs help tying her shoe laces. there was just this want to help raise this kid into the best possible version of themselves and if it took a small army to do so then so be it

other than english bon speaks: spanish (from nando), german (from toto, niki, michael,seb, etc.), finnish (from mostly kimi but a bit from val as well), italian (from toto, niki, and michael), and french (from toto as well) girl is multilingual and sometimes when she was very small her head got confused with all the languages and would start speaking in a different language each time she responded to what you said to her. because she could comprehend what she was hearing, but the wires in her brain just got a little mixed up

i think there is exactly one photo of max, mick, and bon all as babies and they all dont remember it but all the people around them see it and go “oh yeah! you did all meet that one time at that one race”

bon used to do work in bed. laptop set on her thighs or on the mattress in front of her, calculator somewhere in between the sheets, and a countless amount of work papers and documents strewn about. it’s a bad habit she developed over the years and knows it's bad but has never gotten around to breaking. that is until mick is over one day and he goes to get into the opposite side of the bed than she has gotten into and when he lays down he is met with an odd feeling at his back and when he investigates it’s her calculator. and before he can ask why it’s in her bed at all his eyes fall on her work laptop that is sitting in the gap between her pillows. at this point he has put two and two together and asks if she works in her bed and she sheepishly goes “maybeeeeeee” and god that look on her face is so cute so he pulls her into his space after removing the work related items and says “you may be cute but we are talking about this later” and then they continue their cuddle sesh with sweet nothings and stolen kisses until they fall asleep

I love the fact that she grew around everyone because thats exactly as the saying goes: it takes a village to raise a child. it took the biggest village ever (aka f1 crew) to raise bono baby.

I think for the helmet he would totally include a small calculator or even a cute draw of a sticker (to remind of when she was a kid and used to put them on everyones car), or a secret reference when theyre not public yet, maybe a doodle of something because she would totally doodle random cute stuff on some of the papers sometimes when shes distracted, and maybe she doodled a heart or a small cat, so mick will have this cat on his helmet.

They are on non-murderous speaking terms, she respects him for as far as that word can stretch, and he was able to clock her by walking style alone but kept teasing her cause it was funny. The story ends on a positive note; they do not hate each other. He gets along with her.

Dude beat the devil, like, twice. He is on Neron's immediate shit-list cause he ruined his plans. He doesn't have special powers or abilities (will get back to this), he's just A Dude with a charisma dumpstat who lives up to his Trickster title. He also has a biological son with a direct path to a (good) God figure, so he's somehow managed to place himself square in the middle of "Jesus loves me, Satan hates me". (And with the pure headcanon he was raised religious and later dropped that whole thing cause he formed his own opinion as his parents were Italian(retconned to this, originally they were just white) in the like, 60s? this is very funny to me.)

and James isn't special. He's a tightrope walker and acrobat who is afraid of heights and opted to study antigravity in his freetime just to survive until he could blow that popsicle stand. James was, possibly, one of the youngest Rogues in the original unit. I'm talking like, Original Original unit. This isn't necessary understanding to a 'needed for writing' scenario, but it does add to it. It adds to the silly, and it adds to how Impressive he is for what he does/doesn't do, as he's hanging around with a bunch of blue collar con-men just wanting to slap around possibly The Strongest and Certainly The Fastest Hero DC had on it's roster at the time.

He's best friends with Pied Piper; you cannot take this from me. I have panels to prove my stance but they're generally seen hanging out together 'off shift' in comics (once Piper goes to his more heavier set, longer hair look seems to be a turning point for it). When the rest of the guys rag on Hartley for his gay status (Digger, mostly), James doesn't join in. He lets the guy into his house several times just to chat and gossip about the others. when James receives a phonecall that his ex-girlfriend's son has been kidnapped and is in danger, he calls Piper to come help. When James goes FBI, he gathers Piper (and Mick) to help. He tells Piper to his face he doesn't understand why Piper would give a rats ass about the others when they were so cruel to him before. They are friends, and Several headcanon-based reasons have been created over the decades for why James would've acted the way he did in Countdown (outside of just, "Countdown is a bad comic". Which it is. But if you're trying desperately to make it make sense, the 'attempted lore patching' flies)

Speaking of

James isn't a murderer; if he has a body count it's entirely on accident. He's not purposely running around trying to murder anyone and he certainly wouldn't join in on beating a child to death.

Leaving the bulletpoint categories; he's also "popular" in Hollywood, and i'm using """""Popular""""" with a lot of """""". On top of his (legit) devil/angel connections, he's also besties with the Blue Devil (the original one) and knew the Kid Devil before things happened. He also canonically dressed in drag (it was like, the 80s, so 'drag' isn't what you're thinking) just to tease and harass Captain Cold, lying to the man's face with some goddamn Bugs Bunny looneytunes antics while in a cheap wig and cottage cheese, and the man bought it. He is SO GOOD at what he does. James is so good. He's a jackass and he's Not Kind and he will rob you blind for one corn chip if he's feeling up to it, but you'll survive the encounter. When Axel Walker stole his shit and started tying bombs to strays and the homeless, dragged the Trickster title through mud, he went on a war path and threw the boy in a dumpster as a threat. He cares for his name and reputation, cares for his (actual) friends.

Formerly known as Minerva Davenport, Minnie was the youngest child to her parents by quite a margin—her two older brothers being over a decade her senior. Out of the three, she was the only girl as well as the only Synth.

The Davenports came from old money, and managed to stay rich by investing their significant generational wealth into a handful of companies, all of which became some of the biggest subsidiaries under OmniCorp Holdings.

Her parents were very strict, very controlling, and obsessed with raising the perfect children. Her brothers were both fine, but eventually fell short of their parents' exacting standards; and Minnie was no different, but the big difference between her and them was that she could easily be altered to their liking.

For years, her parents made repeated changes to her mind every time she stepped out of line or did something that they disapproved of. It never seemed to stick, and they were quick to place the blame on the people in her life that they disliked. By far their biggest problem was with her best friend, Mick Dantes, and they were especially unhappy with how close she was to his family.

When Minnie was 14 years old, her parents sent her to boarding school in an effort to get her away from what they deemed to be "harmful" influences. She hated it there, not least because she was relentlessly bullied by other students.

It took her two years to formulate and execute an escape plan with the help of one of the few friends that she had made there. After arriving at Mick's family home, she enrolled in a public school and began the long process of fighting to be emancipated from her parents. What followed was a year of the Davenports refusing to let the Dantes take official custody until they suddenly relented.

Minnie was relieved to finally be free, but also immediately suspicious of their sudden agreement. It took six years for her to discover that the reason they had let her go was because they had recently taken in her niece Julie in her place.

She has spent the last decade building a life away from her biological parents, and the last five years working to free her niece from their clutches. It is a battle that is still technically ongoing, but at least they have managed to get Julie out of the Davenport house and into a position of relative independence.

As for Minnie, she is content with her life as a bartender and musician. She has her parents, her siblings, her band, and her friends, and her only real gripe is that she's extremely unlucky in love. Just truly the worst kind of Disaster Lesbian.

Okay I don't know if it will be a good idea but what about Beta Estie in pack Alpha Nico?

Like Esteban wished he could be either an Alpha or an omega. It would be easier to not be forgotten by the pack sometimes. And he struggles to fit in, especially when alpha Pierre is getting all the attention by the younger ones.

Omegas Mick and Lance are amazing with Esteban but when their heats comes around he feel helpless and restless. He cannot help them like he wants to. He can be here for them if they feel down about a race or F1 or life in general, but their biological needs, or helping them calm down; that's something he cannot do. He cannot rumble like an alpha, or fuss over like an omega.

And the worst moment for him was the day Lance got into his bike accident and got a panick attack right after his race. Lance pulled through but after it, after the adrenaline rush wore out, he panicked and Esteban couldn't help him. It had to be Nico housing her Alpha voice that helped.

So Este starts wondering, what if one day he leaves the pack. Will he be missed? Will his absence will be noticed? He just feel like he doesn't fit in, like he doesn't deserve the pack. And it hurts.

What I don’t understand is how Mick denied Karis ??? He begged for the baby, picked out a name, was there for the pregnancy but once she was here he became ABSENT ??? like what made him think that wasn’t his kid ????

He was not there for the pregnancy, in fact Marsha Hunt hailed a cab and took herself to a nearby hospital and gave birth to the daughter that he asked for...all alone, and "Midnight Dream" is hardly a name (I'm so glad Marsha settled instead on Karis). But that’s what men do. They treat women like they’re playthings - they use you and then when they’re done, when they’re finished they just throw you away like you’re trash. Especially in those days, men treated pregnancy like it was the woman’s “problem” –  as if, okay she gave birth to it, now that’s hers to deal with. Also, the law in England wasn’t very kind to single mothers during the 1970s. I haven’t finished Marsha’s book yet, but I think one of the main reasons why he was absent is because she asked him for money and he’s known to be a stingy and greedy motherfucker.

And the fact that Mick and his lawyers literally forced Marsha to sign papers saying he was not the biological father of Karis is absolutely LAUGHABLE!
