i have a personal problem with this kind of attitude. it's not a petty thing i am unreasonably angry about. there is a politics of translation and it affects one's understanding of art and popular culture/cultural geopolitics.

yes, tbhx has an unprecedented world wide release for a donghua/Chinese media and it's vital for its popularity, especially among transnational fandom spaces. Transcreated works are important for easier access. BUT, my gripe with the Japanese dub of a Chinese media WILL never be resolved. I am not talking about the quality, the issue lies in the very creation of the Japanese dub of a donghua itself. Let me give you an example.

Last year, we had an optional course called translation studies and one of the first things our professor asked was : who are the writers of A Doll's House and Waiting for Godot? He told those few of us who had read these texts closely to shut our mouth and let others take a guess. Most people answered : British writers. The texts are English texts. Because it's so famous among literature enthusiasts and when a piece of literature has a 'classic' tag attached to it, we tend to generalize and oversimplify it. So, a Norwegian playwright's original Norwegian play or an Irish playwright's play originally written in French- both get labelled as British literature. Get my point?

The anime industry is justifiably dominated by Japanese productions but when we forget to accommodate the nuances, the origin culture decays. It is, in many senses, a form of subtle cultural imperialism brought by ignorance.

People complain about Link Click's 'poor marketing' but I think Haolin was clever doing so. Even in the reviews by Indian anime bros™ I see them trying to pronounce 'donghua'. People RECOGNIZE that Link Click is a Chinese media, it's NOT an anime. You may laugh at those link click related youtube video titles saying stuff like : China is taking over anime, this Chinese anime is better than your favourite anime, PEAK Chinese anime, the best anime of 2021 is NOT Japanese?!, Link Click is taking over anime, China's hidden gem, China might have created the best anime of the year- CHINA IS IMPORTANT.

Whenever people talk about Chinese donghua- Link Click, Heaven Official's Blessing, Master of Diabolism etc are mentioned and people KNOW that it looks like anime but not really anime. It's... something... something else. This distinction is critical and essential.

Now, thanks to censorship (the Chinese version is not available on any official platform), many people think (not all people dig that deep while watching things, like come on) Spiritpact is a JAPANESE anime. Who the heck is Tanmouki or whatever. They are are Duanmu Xi and Yang Jinghua.

I like the Japanese dub of Link Click but there was a c*** in the comments who said "uwu it's not in japanese so I won't watch it" b**** doesn't even understand Japanese. B just wants an 'authentic Japanese anime experience.'

I hate when people dumb down laito’s character to just a sex-obsessed pervert. Hes literally so much more than that and i see so many people jsut completely missing the point of his character and *why* he acts the way he is for reasons other than the way the anime made him to be another otome trope. 

First of all, laito was groomed throughout his entire childhood by his mother, cordelia. She would rape him (not sleep with. Rape. Stop saying stuff like “had sex with” and “slept with” because he was a CHILD it was rape) consistently and told him that sex and lust was love- this caused laito to have an extremely twisted vision of what love is and how he expresses his love to the player/yui. 

I think that Laito is very misrepresented in the anime, probably because they didnt have time to get all the characters lore in or else the show would be as long as one piece, but still. He’s not even given a little snippet of a backstory like Shu with Edgar, all we see of his past is him as a little kid where he barely even interacts with his mom which we see in Yui’s nightmare. 

Im so tired of people tearing his character down to just a pervert. Because he’s not- he’s a traumatized kid (idk about kid- wiki says 17 in human but hes like 200+ im pretty sure so idk) whos a victim of manipulation, incest, and rape. It’s not his fault that he’s like that when he was literally convinced by the person you trust the most growing up- his mother, that love is sex. 

Throughout his childhood and mostly teenage years he has thing feeling of emptiness that he feels after having sex (whether it be after being raped by his mother or having a fling with a classmate) where he asks himself something along the lines of “if this is love, why do i feel so empty?” And he mostly has sex to try and fill that void that he has inside of him.

OMG I am SO MAD.

Remember this adorable moment in ep 341 where Luffy offers to share his lunch with Zoro in order to get Zoro to go into Thriller Bark with them, and Zoro caves in less than a second? This is a canonical moment, btw. I don’t think his eyes are closed in the manga as he smiles but this is 100% an Oda original. And it’s so special because Luffy never offers to share his food, never mind doing so this happily.

Well, I just saw a clip of the dubbed version of this scene by chance, and in the English dub, instead of sharing his lunch, Luffy gets Zoro to give in by threatening to eat Zoro’s lunch.

That’s completely different!!! That’s the opposite of what he says in Japanese! WTF?! O, my ZoLu brainworm is PISSED.

I can’t believe I’m just finding this out after, ionno, 13 years or something, but I am retroactively angry.

(Now that I’ve typed this out, it seems like a very silly thing for a grown woman to be angry about but ya know what, we could’ve hooked so many more ZoLu truthers with this scene, but those who only watch the dub will never know, and that’s so sad for the fandom.)

That she didn’t love him back?

Here are two different translations of a summarization of the play, crystal clear that she went with him by choice and Athena was most likely only there to further confirm her decision. Hell, even Ovid would call bs that Andromeda didn’t love Perseus back, Philostratus also made it very clear that Andromeda felt the same attraction that Perseus had.

It’s perfectly possible to depict Andromeda as a complex character with her own story. I just don’t understand how shipping her with a monster that wasn’t even humanoid or conscious in the original is the way to do it. How can anyone come to the conclusion that the mindless monster that tried to eat her would ever give a damn about her yet the boy who rescued her and was a great husband to her was somehow the bad guy who only saw her as a reward? Perseus would’ve rescued her regardless of wether or not her parents would consent to the marriage BC HE LOVED HER AND SHE LOVED HIM

Why are we trying to portray a romantic, almost Disney-esque romance as abusive? Perseus, one of the only Greek heroes to never cheat, actually only views how wife and mother of his children as a “spoils of conflict”? Wouldn’t it be way more compelling to depict one of the only black female characters in mythology as having a simple happy ending? Why is it somehow more feminist to make her lover and husband her abuser who never cared about her autonomy?
