Why Wander is such an important character

Very long post below!

Ill be rambling about Wander over Yonder, specifically, WANDER!!

The show in itself is already amazing, the episodes are short and fun, each character is oozing with personality and fun interactions and there are always ways in which it is all connected. Further on the animation of the show and overall look is absolutely adorable!

For me personally, Wander is simply such an important character and not for few reasons.

I love that Wander's silly happy go lucky personality is so addictive. He's a happy person, who gets happy by helping others in need, even to points where he gets himself in trouble (every episode LOL) But regardless i think they are such an important character traits to have (Happiness, altruism, Optimism).

In today's depressing and violent world, where everyone just fights with each other, a character like Wander can be a sense of hope or inspiration!

Of course, many main characters have these traits as well, but i think a key difference between Wander and many other optimist protagonists lies in their EXPERIENCE IN LIFE!

These other protags are innocent, naive optimists, because they haven't experienced "the real world" yet. And while it makes sense to have characters like these (as an allegory to growing up), they get really tiring and repetitive really quickly. They also commonly showcase optimism and naivety to go hand in hand. And its why a lot if people commonly believe that "realsim" is inherently "pessimistic" (it isn't btw. Theres good and bad in life, denying theres good, is denying reality)

Its extremely refreshing to have a main character like Wander, actually be hinted at being millennias old, repeatedly converting villains to good throughout the eons, out of a sense of duty (and perhaps also Pacifist revenge for his childhood, where its hinted that his entire planet was destroyed and he was the only survivor.)

not only is this also something that one learns, the more one watches (keeping the viewer intrigued) but the fact that so much about Wander's life and past is a mystery is what makes him a fascinating character. At first glance hes just some helpful guy, and the more you learn about him, the more you more you think "who is this guy?" Not in a negative way, but in a complete curiosity. Is it possible he's as old as the universe himself? If so does he know it? Who is he? What actually happened in his past? How did he live before his hat? Was there a time he wasn't as helpful? What caused him to change? Who is he? But at the same time, the viewer doesn't NEED to know. Theres no stress to, no hurry to uncover a mystery. Its like "mystery but it's actually completely low-key". I like that. (Im the kind to get into conspiracy theories or get crazy over plot holes, so the show managing this is insane)

Traits like these, especially in contrast to their personality being so so happy, child-like, goofy, charitable, it makes for an extremely interesting and fascinating character, that one doesn't commonly see in media! Which is really awesome! Someone that's seen so much horrors, lived through civil wars, yet tries to help a skeleton get together with a butch lesbian??

Its awesome!

Other that just that alone, he's helped me out personally! He in many ways reminds me of myself as a kid, i too was altruistic, always trying to help, struggled to say no, was positive and happy go-lucky and adventurous (well, as all kids i suppose), recently rediscovering the show made me realise how much i missed those personality traits in myself. That i had hidden them away, due to people making fun of me of being "too naive" and "too childish". Eventually Making me not talk to people really, and develop really bad self esteem. Rediscovering this show, and specifically how these "childish" traits can be seen in a very positive charming light, helped me realise that being scared of "coming off wierd", "coming off as toxic positivity" will always be worse than not being positive.... At all.

Ive heard from other people too that this show has helped them through tough times, and allowed them to reconnect with more positive thought patterns. Which is why i think characters like Wander are insanely important for media!!

Too much is too depressing all the time! We can create media (ESPECIALLY ADULT MEDIA) that isnt depressed. Positivity and happiness are not a crime! And im so glad a character like Wander exists to exhibit that!

I have never said mothers are spoiled or have jt easy because they objectively dont. However the fact that it is very hard today to afford a child is because theres already so many of us competing for low wage labor and high rent. Under these conditions having fewer kids and reducing the population that way is how you rebalance the scales . Public services like daycares and social services are all largely tax funded so what is the difference? It still means those without kids must be sucked dry to pay for it

Okay, that's alright. Hopefully other anti natalists will also agree that mothers do struggle even with a support system. However, what I disliked about some of the discourses from anti natalists that I've seen is their disgusting and frequently misogynistic language as well as their dismissive comments on the struggles women (and parents in general) face besides using all sorts of demonic language against little children.

I think you need to view taxes a bit differently. The taxes that you are paying which go into public welfare and social services are not a conspiracy to steal money from ordinary citizens (excluding stuff like bail outs for corporates or army funding etc) but an investment that benefits everyone in society. For example if you as a child free adult pay for the social services that benefits parents and children or goes into improving education for children, that will lead to better childhood leading to well adjusted adult citizens which will improve society in turn benefiting you as well. In addition, when you are older and less abled, you will likely depend on old age services which also depend on younger adults (who are now kids or even yet to be born) taking care of you, in a way giving you the returns that you were taxed when you were younger and child free.

And relevant to the last point, I haven't really seen anti natalists talk about the endgame? Like what happens when when you end up with a large ageing population and very few young people to take up the workload? How will society function and how will social services work and who will take care of the ageing population if there aren't enough young people? You can't always depend on immigration to fill up the declining population.

Also, i'm unsure why anti-natalists in relatively well off places are so preoccupied with this whole business and complaining as if they're being forced to serve or are unfairly taxed against parents? Like are there any actual cases of women deciding to have a lot of children in egalitarian societies with strong social support systems which will hit child-free people financially because of taxes etc? Afaik in almost all cases women have fewer children when presented with better opportunities and support systems leading to lower population growth.

One last thing - I sometimes think ideologies that depend a lot on ideas that kind of conflict with human experience are unlikely to succeed on a large scale. Like if your idea depends on people having to stop having children or mixing with and loving and cohabiting with each other, you are unlikely to find a large number of takers for it.

Rhen Dharmas' origins dated WAY back in the early 1930s, with a farmer from a european village picking up the first ever card of its kind and slowly but surely turns him and the rest of the town into cards

A bit of a fruitshipping moments here and there (Yuzu going absolute bonkers whenever someone tries to harm her "boyfriend" while he's in his draconic form)

The thief could be a minor character from Zexal (either Erazor or that gangster duo Shark used to hangout) or someone entirely new who wanted the Rhen Dharmas to exploit them to win multiple duels

Maria was the one who brought up the entire "Rhen-Dharma" conspiracy, does research abt it, HASNT SLEPT IN DAYS, friends suspect it would be the influence that's driving her crazy, nearly drowned in her brother's bathtub, nearly SLIT HER NECK FOR A SACRIFICE, then was sent to the hospital and she's alright... for now...

Interesting lore drop between a conversation Maria and her ace monster, Ibong Adarna (they/them) have regarding Duel Monsters and their secrets overall

1V2 between the thief and Yuya (in his draconic form) and Maria (OC)

^ An INCREDIBLY intense and brutal duel that Yuya will never forget, even worst than the ones he had faced during the Dimensional War because

^ 1. The monster's effect may inflict damage but the way it did is a bit of a horrific process and 2. If they lose they'll turn into ACTUAL Monster Cards

And then he learns to find ways on how to live with it, and learns to accept it as a part of himself, despite his wishes for it to be gone

Duelists in the Backrooms

Maria also learns how to let go of the burden to protect others over herself and also lets herself be more open

Concepts of this AU is being brainstormed over so here's maybe a sneak peak of how it plays out

There are four groups that reside in a specific level in the backrooms: The Lancers (Level 170), The Resistance (Level 20), The "Signers" (Level 11.1), and The Rebellion (Level 179)

There isn't as much duels in this AU unlike TCHBIT, the duels only happen if there's a misunderstanding or disagreement

There's also solo survivors that doesn't join a specific group and/or joins them but just survive independently (i.e Maria, Meiru, Dennis, Michio, and Asuka)

Instead of dying and losing their items, they just restart to a completely different level and their items will be scattered around them once they restart (meaning they're going to be stuck in an endless loop of survival and death)

^ The wounds they have obtain from fighting the entities will also appear as scars

Theres going to be underrated duo moments here and there, some are serious, some are not

Summoning Monsters can also be helpful for combat and transportation but are limited due to certain levels being strict abt said monsters

Zarc and Ray's influence over the Yu-Boys and Bracelets Girls are stronger than in canon

Leo has something to do with all characters being stuck in the backrooms

The characters aged regularly but due to how slow the time in the backrooms are, their bodies ages slowly (in this au)

The Curse That Will Never Be Unfold

The father side of Yuya's family owns a really popular circus, with his father, Yusho, being a ringmaster and him being one of those a daredevil acrobats

His mother is a gang leader (that doesnt terrorize) like in the anime, but instead of retiring from it she continues to help others with her gang

Yuzu is somewhat a badass bard warrior, her main weapon being the violin. Her father, Shuzo, owns a instrument shop and works alongside with Yusho

Raya, Gongenzaka, and Sawatari are somewhat townies (with one of them being secretly a samurai warrior) that soon learned to fight with secret abilities they didnt know exist within them

^ Maria can transform into certain terrains (small terrains) and also animals that may represent, symbolizes, or is connected with nature

Maria is a forest spirit that is under Lethia's mentorship, alongside her twin brother, Mariano, and younger twin siblings, Olive and Oliver

^ Born from the blood of two humans that were received from a cut during their work hours that soon dropped into the leaves, grows out of a giant ass flower, then the couple proceeds to drop one into the water and then BOOM her brother is born out of a seashell

(^ Then they decide to do it again 10 years later then was given the results, a fire and air child...)

Yuto, Ruri, and Shun will accompany the group at some point, with the three of them developing a close bond the group, especially Maria

The Synchro and Fusion squad will appear but idk what their roles are still...

Zarc and Coralline are siblings, with him being the god of destruction and her being the goddess of death, underneath the alias, Morgana

^ Zarc and Ray are still bitter enemies, but over time grew close as Zarc starts to realize that he is not the villain that everyone thought of him was

^ Zarc doesnt have a close relationship with his siblings. He, Virgil, and Carolyn always fights, he and Cora arent really close, and Marilena is deeply afraid of him. He hates to admit it but, he wishes he can spend more time with them but his lust for violence prevents him from doing so

^ Also she fell in love with a human who has secret eldritch magic, in which enrages Zarc, gets teased by Virgil and Carolyn, but Marilena is oblivious to the concept of love (despite being the goddess of love herself lmao)

Cora and Maria are besties secretly, neither of their friend group (minus Cora's) knows abt it

BBC Sherlock watch through: A Study in Pink

You read that right. BBC Sherlock in the year of lord and savior 2024. To be fair to me, I was 8 when the show ended, and therefore could not watch it in its heyday.

Two disclaimers before we begin with its first episode.

1. Despite me not watching a single episode up until this point, I do know a decent amount about it from watching videos about it (Hbomberguy’s video, Sarah Z’s video about the Johnlock conspiracy, and as much as I’m ashamed to admit it, a decent chunk of the TJLC explained videos). That being said, I will attempt to go in to it with an open mind in all regards.

2. Much like what people do to his actor, I will intentionally be getting Sherlock’s name wrong. Why? Because I think it’s funny. It’s probably not gonna be funny to a lot of people but I’m gonna do it anyhow. Mmkay?

Without further ado, let’s get into it.

-What kind of bed is that lmao. You roll over a little bit and you fall off

-That transition from John saying that nothing happens to him to the intro was definitely a bit awkward

-These transitions are getting on my nerves. Can we find a smoother way to get from one thing to the next please?

-Mycroft is alright I think. Him and Sally, that’s two characters I like

-I’m gonna count how many references to Shackrock and John being gay/gay jokes in general there are. That’s 2

-Weird brothers. Kind of funny. I like them

-3 gay references. We’re doing great for not even being through the first episode.

-Genuinely though, why does nobody believe John when he says that him and Shackrock aren’t a thing. It’s only happened once so far but I know it happens in the future a few more times. Theres no apologies or even any “mhmmm sure ;)”, they just straight up ignore him.

-I think Shellrock likes men at the very least. Between everyone around him thinking that him and John are a thing, and him being based on the the adaptation that wanted to make him gay, he’s probably at least a little bit of a manliker at the very least. Not sure if it’s intentional though.

-4 gay references. You think we’ll be able to squeeze one more in before the episode ends?

-How do I still have 30 minutes left. Ugh.

-I think….I don’t like this show. I will continue on. But I don’t think I like it.

-I am growing a fondness for John and Shellrock’s relationship though. They’re a little cute.

-Why is he so insistent on Shellrock not being the type to take drugs. He literally found him slapping on nicotine patches like it was nothing.

Finally, the episode has ended. It’s been 4 million years. It got a little bad in the middle but it managed to pick itself back up by the end. Because of this I have no idea how I feel about the episode over all. Anyway, join me next time for The Blind Banker.

some thoughts i've had recently

so after impossible years, nobody knew what my trio went though - aside from Sylvi, who Martha spoke to exhaustively afterwards, they had some very strange and difficult conversations

but all of their other families and friends had no idea what was going on with the three of them, why they all seemed to have had a personality change overnight, why martha actually physically seemed to LOOK different

this always bothered kai a lot. it got to him not knowing what happened, he always felt excluded because of this. Sylvi tried to talk to him once, to provide him a little more context and explain why him knowing would be no good to anyone, including himself but it didn't really help

kai is bessie mates with matthew and when matthew was having a hard time of things, kai always felt like there were elements to his struggles that he could never really understand - because he knows next to nothing about impossible years. kai could never really let it go, and when he starts dating Addison, these feelings only became more profound

so now we get to the stuff i'm thinking about :-) which is stuff that i dont THINK is canon (this could change) but it COULD be canon

kai and addison are engaged when the events of 2015 come up again. Kai thinks surely they've got to give me something now, we're literally engaged to be married. but addison still refuses. this eventually escalates to an argument (kai and addison dont actually have alot of arguments usually so this is significant)

kai spends most of the day deliberating on 2015. he realises that there's only one person in thier circle that he's never tried asking what they know - Charlie

charlie is matthews brother and lived with him back in 2015, so kai figures it's not impossible that charlie could give him a bit of extra insight. so kai messages him

immediately charlie is on it. it's very clear to kai that charlie has spent a very, very long time thinking about this over the years, and he has a lot to say. then charlie announces he's coming round to talk about it. Kai doesn't seem to have much choice in this

charlie is a bit of a conspiracy theory nut so when his brother started behaving so strangely, he saw it as his own little personal mystery. charlie comes round to Kai's and drops a folder on the coffee table.

you know how theres the cliché of the pictures and snippets on walls hung up on the wall with string connecting them? yeah, it's like that but on paper instead

kai is concerned but intrigued, he needs to know what charlie knows, and charlie is also intrigued, finding that he too needs to know what kai knows

so they share what they know. it's weird and it only keeps getting weirder, but kai is relieved to actually be learning something, AND to be talking to someone else who is similarly in the dark about this

this goes on for a week or so, secretly talking with each other, working together to unwrap the mystery. eventually they make new discoveries. they find a private website, dead for years, that johanna used as part of her cult. johanna is a woman who was told by ananke that the end times were coming. he told her about the cycles and, essentially, the background of Impossible years. so she started a 'group' of people who worked together to try and find some kind of salvation, to earn good graces with the gods, etc.

things get interesting when kai and charlie spot lena dee in a photograph on the website. lena is sylvi's mum, who went missing for years.

all of this is an outstanding breakthrough. kai and charlie decide to talk to the others.

this doesn't go very well.

so not to no true scotsman here but as someone who watches/listens to a Lot of true crime content but also is appalled by the 'true crime brain' phenomenon like im really wondering how radically different the true crime content can be out there, or is it the viewers mentality, or is it a combination of things. a lot of the true crime stuff i listen to is victim focused, but not conspiratorial. like mostly just recounting the basic facts of cases, usually older or solved ones. basically like the home made youtube successors to forensic files (which ive also seen basically every episode of) i know Certain Podcasts and tiktoks about current events apparently are fucked up? i did stop watching a particular youtube channel when it started leaning into "oooo spooky personality disorders" commentary out of nowhere in every case. im just like. is a lot of this driven by the way shit gets whipped up on social media + the current conservative conspiracy panic over "trafficking" or like i wonder how much true crime shit out there really is just saying all this shit and encouraging this behavior.

theres no point to this post im just reflecting on something thats causing such a huge social issue right now but is so weirdly not reflective of my experience of the thing.

i also wonder if its because i already sowed my conspiracy brain oats with fictional shit like tjlc so now i dont have the bandwidth for that anymore????

honestly a lot of this is just fucking me up right now too after seeing a bunch of people read the tea leaves of an obviously mentally unwell persons twitter acct and me reading this "evidence" in total confusion while these people whip each other up into a frenzy because 'how dare you not take these accustions seriously' when i think in reality mental health advocacy has focused so hard on anxiety and burnout and depression that people DONT know how to handle things like psychosis or delusions or anything at all when presented with it and theyll call anyone questioning if that is whats happening a monster and like. theres people in the comments of this, thinking its 100% real, ON THE SIDE of the person who might be delusional, saying "this is just like an episode of YOU!" "this is like a movie!" so i wonder how much of it is about /true/ crime at all???

like people have already gotten hurt, some are questioning if people reaffirming this persons delusions helped drive them to suicide, there are people who have been accused of murder based on literally nothing in the past couple years- personally i hate acting like something is 'tiktoks fault' bc it usually comes down to a social model much of the internet and large platforms fall into, it just so happens tiktok is very very very good at fueling that- but yeah tiktok definitely isnt helping this kind of telephone game of culture we have going on with conspiracies

I’m not super into fashion analysis, but I find it interesting that 1993 Grace tended to wear almost victororian style clothes whereas early 2000s and 2019 Grace is dressed more like a 60s housewife.

This isn’t a detail, I just think it’s really dumb that Reginald was hiring ‘normal’ nannies to begin with. Vanya’s powers aside, theres a 4-year-old running around there with super strength, one with a Lovecraftian horror in his stomach, and another probably already throwing knives. It’s a wonder one of the others didn’t already accidentally kill one.

When they get Allison to the infirmary, Five is holding Allison’s throat to stop the blood. 😭

In 1x08 when Vanya is arguing with Allison about Leonard/Harold she says “And I love him.” In this episode when Vanya is arguing with Leonard about her family and Allison she says “And I her! And I love them.”

The moment Klaus says “why don’t we find Vanya—“ Five leaves to go look for her before he even finishes the sentence.

When Hazel knocks, Five tells Delores “I’ll get it,” like there’s another option, which is honestly hilarious to me.

I think it’s interesting that when Five lists the things Hazel (and Cha Cha) did he says “you attacked our house, tried to kill my family, and kidnapped my brother.” He doesn’t even mention that they tried to kill him (and nearly succeeded) in the department store.

Hazel says that the job Five did in Calhoun was legendary. I’d be really curious to know what that job was.

Five tells Hazel “if you’re out then Hellrider ain’t riding.” I have no idea what that means, but I assume it’s a reference of some kind.

I can’t believe I never noticed this until now, but Hazel’s (and to some degree Cha Cha’s) uniform/suit are incredibly similar to the Academy uniforms. They’re the same shade. The jacket is very similar and the collar is the same cut. They both have white shirts and ties underneath. The big visible differences between Hazel and Five’s clothes are the shorts instead of trousers, the Academy crest, and red outline on Five’s

The cat that Vanya’s neighbor is always missing is named Mr. Puddles, which could arguably be another rain reference.

In the “All Die Young* sequence, everybody is framed paired up with someone who has emotionally influenced their arc. Except Vanya. Luther is with Allison. Diego is with Grace. Ben is with Klaus. Five is with Delores. Vanya is alone in her cage.

Interestingly, in the scene right before this, Hazel and Cha Cha are framed in a *slightly* similar manner. They’re on both sides of the heart with Agnes in the middle between them. The walls are also covered in pairs of birds.

Interestingly, there’s also a pair of birds in Allison’s room, which we see in the next scene. I don’t really know if this means anything, it just stuck out to me visually.

Five even tells Delores they always were an unlikely pair.

Just want to point out that when Vanya has a convo with her younger self, she is in a soundproof cell designed to absorb sound that could arguably be used for sensory deprivation. One of the hallmarks of sensory deprivation is hallucinating. Or it could simply be she is in the mist of a severe breakdown. Either way. Or both.

Also, if we’re going to continue on with the pair symbolism, Vanya technically does have a pair here. It’s herself. Which isn’t that different from Five and Delores because Delores is simply an extension of Five’s mind.

When faced with a lack of sound to draw from, Vanya used her own heartbeat to ground and channel her powers.

it was completely silent and you came in so abruptly that jisung - who had been under the counter getting some napkins to restock some of the dispensers - jumped up at the sound of your backpack dropping onto the table before you buried your face into your arms

jisung’s always had a soft heart since he was younger, so when he heard a little sniffle and recognized the sea otter keychain on your bag, he abandoned his previous task as he set the stock of napkins on the counter 

he’d been in your world history class the year before, but you never really got to talking to him besides him asking you for some paper or to borrow the highlighter he always needed but never seemed to have

that was no excuse for him to let you cry on your own so he told himself to muster up some courage and somehow got himself over to your table

carefully, he placed himself in the chair next to you, scooting it over to your side to gently - but awkwardly - place his hand on your shoulder to get your attention

“y/n?”

the way your eyes were teary nearly broke his heart when you slowly lifted your head up to meet his gaze

“it’s me, jisung. from asian history?”

immediately, you rushed to wipe your tears, sit up straight, and basically fix your whole appearance as you realized that han jisung was sitting next to you witnessing your crying session

before you can question him, jisung grabs your arm and your backpack and bids goodbye to his freckled friend before dragging you towards the ice cream shop to start the lesson

you don’t think you even agreed, but how could you when he seemed so excited while he talks about the industrial revolution, going on and on about the first operating machine in asia

you’d think all the information would go right over your head, but the way he explained it as the two of you read your textbook gave you the ability to engrave all the needed information in your head

occasionally you’d have to stop him to repeat something because you got distracted watching him as he explained one of the conspiracies he saw relating one of the topics

and he had to stop sometimes as you rushed to write something down in your notes, giving him the ability to see your interest in what he was saying

it made him feel nice knowing that he wasn’t the only one who found all these theories interesting

the way your eyes sparkled or the little gasp that escaped your lips when he connected some facts to prove his point made him melt

he rambled a lot, but you didn’t mind

he did, on the other hand

his rambling never bothered him but now that he was around you, he became worried about the amount and speed of his speech and hyperaware about the possible facial cues that might show signs of boredom or confusion on your face

you only give him the brightest smile and he almost has to end your tutoring sessions right then and there

a few sessions in, you tell him about your next major test and he agrees to help you the night before

only when he gets home does he realize that he may have gotten a little carried away with the conspiracy theories and explained the actual textbook less

oh my gosh, did i just stress them out? yes, i did definitely just stress them out? jisung, you dumbass. their test is tomorrow, why’d you have to go off about corporations? why are you so worried? it’s y/n. it’s not like you like them…

his head filled with these thoughts through the night and the next day, worries never leaving his head

he didn’t see you on campus, so the guilt was eating away at him that he could barely focus during his classes and on his shift poor boy almost ran into a glass door

the manager realizes that he’s kind of off today, so she lets him leave early cause he didn’t look too well

that’s when he realizes that if he doesn’t figure why he’s so worried, then he might explode

theres one person you haven’t seen the entire day and you’re dying to just up and track him down when you see him from your bedroom window. you watch as he runs up to your porch and rings the doorbell, and you grab something from your backpack before sprinting down the stairs

jisung’s heart beats as he waits for someone to answer, all his worries flooding back in

but all those worries disappear when you bring out a paper from behind you to show him your test paper with a big red ‘97%’ written at the top

“holy crap.”

“holy crap is right! i owe you everything jisung!”

jisung eyes only widen and his cheeks turn pink, nervously laughing as he humbly says that it was all you

“i was really worried, though.”

“worried? why?”

Imagine with me for a second: Why does Spencer willingly stay with a family who locks him in their basement with only minor complaining? Being socially isolated for even a few years can do a number to a person’s psyche (I should know, I’m projecting onto this character right now), let alone thousands.

Ok, so, just... since the “ao3 is bad for asking for donations” bs is going around again, theres a bit of new stuff mixed in, but it seems to largely be the same “why dont they pay the authors” type stuff, with the usual insinuations of the people running the site just pocketing the money and doing nothing.

they made a bit over $700k in donations last year, but let’s bump that up to $750k for estimation purposes.

As of several years ago, they were running with about 750 volunteers, on ao3 alone.

there’s also 18 committees that they run, which are headed by a total of about 30 people, and let’s say there are 3 or 4 other people on each committee on average.

on top of that, they’re one of the most visited and active sites in the world, with almost 6 million fics stored there, and they regularly hit in the region of 250,000,000 distinct visitors a month. these numbers are very significant, because to operate smoothly servers need to be able to quickly access the data for a page, and then pass that data to you. 

lets say there are... hm. about 60kb of data that they need to pass to you in order to generate a page. at 250 million visitors, if each person loads a single page and does nothing else, that’s 15TB a month, easily, since i’m taking that estimate from directly loading a single short chapter, no searching or browsing or visiting different author pages or looking through bookmarks. which most people will probably do to some degree each time they visit, each of which is another system that needs to be queried, and is reliable and fast about it.

for reference, i can’t get an estimate on how much this must cost, because i havent been able to find any hosts to compare against that even have hosting schemes that allow numbers as high as ao3 delivers reliably and efficiently.

i work with databases for my job, and i frankly have no idea how the fuck ao3 manages to be what it is on the budget that it gets, im half-convinced there are fucking wizards back there or something.

purchasing the kinds of servers that they need to be using must be costing them well into the tens of thousands on the up-front price, server maintanence costs can run well into the thousands per month, and their reliability must mean they have sufficient redudancy to take them out of commission on the regular.

anyway. let’s say that the hosting, maintanence, and replacement costs for all this only cost them $150k a year. based on everything i know, this is an absolutely absurd underestimate to the extent that it’s frankly laughable.

anyway, that then leaves $600k. 

no matter where you assume that goes into the pockets of people behind the scenes, this would require complete complicity of everyone behind the scenes to keep under cover, as well as passing their false financial statements through audits and such. by and large, conspiracies like this don’t work very well!

so, that $600k should go to the people who “actually” bring value to ao3, the writers, then?

does everyone just get an even share of it? in that case, as there are about 2.6 million accounts- everybody gets about 23 cents a year. sound worth it? 

no? ok then, what about for each fic someone writes, they get an even share of it? after all, there were “only” about a million fics published in 2019. that’s about 60, maybe 70 cents per fic, doesn’t that sound good to you?

im guessing you think that’s still a bit low. in that case, should it be based on "quality” of fics? how should that quality be determined? kudos, hits, reader interaction? should that be an ongoing thing, or assessed at a particular time since publication? what about very long-running fics, how should that be assessed? should people just get paid a flat amount per chapter?

if the metrics to determine how much a fic is “worth” are transparent, then they’ll be abused- how should that be be determined? poor language quality? short chapter length? if they’re not transparent, how do you justify to authors why they aren’t paid more?

what about disputes regarding fanfics being “stolen”? right now, i dont think many people care much about if someone else writes a very similar fic to theirs. but would they feel the same way if someone else writes something inspired by, or with the same premise, or generally similar, to one of yours? what about if someone writes a story and incorporates someone elses OC? should the person who created that OC get a cut? 

if you want to increase funds to pay authors, how should you approach that? ask for donations? if payment metrics are transparent, then that means that anybody who performs well on them are likely to actively drive away donors. make it a subscription site? would you pay a monthly subscription fee just to access the site?

and so on, and so on. and that’s before any issues with backlog and such should be resolved. tbh, there are so many precedents that’d need to be set and potential issues that this would raise that even if ao3 responded with “fuck you” to every person who currently aren’t happy with the system, it would still probably be less unpopular than literally any change to allow them to pay authors.

honestly, at the end of the day, most people who are actually interested in financial support and who write fanfic? generally have a blog with a donation button. or a patreon. or something similar, along those lines. and there’s nothing stopping you from just going and doing that directly if you’re actually interested in supporting them.

it’s worth noting that there’s also a legal aspect to this, which im not particularly familiar with, but, for starters- a commercial aspect to works can make a big difference in whether or not something is considered “fair use”. whether or not something is, indeed, fair use, can also be pretty subjective. do you want to toss that litigational coin? and do you have the money and lawyers to press the issue?

Well hello anon, I would be dELiGHTED to talk about my homebrew setting. A few of my players follow me on here, so I can’t give away some secrets, but heres what I can tell you:

My world is called Eladun and its based on that post I reblogged earlier (the concept of giant, ocean like forests) and a conspiracy called ‘no forests on flat earth’ which holds that currently there are no forests because all the trees we see now are teeny-tiny baby trees (also per this conspiracy mountains and plateaus are the petrified remains of those trees). These two really just caught my imagination in terms of a fantasy setting and I ran with it from there! Having a kind of geographical feature to start from was very fun, because it forces you to think about how societies would develop in different ways from our own and just gives this fun, fantastical bent to the world.

For example, because a great portion of the land is forested, cities and civilizations are even more pushed to the coasts - but being on the coast they also have to deal with coastal things like extreme weather & ocean storms. The starting city for my players and the one they’re getting to know right now in the game copes with this through magical means (theres a stormwall around the city that is lowered in the more temperate summer season and raised in the harsh, stormy winter). They also are a society that prioritizes knowledge and learning and craft, so during the winter season, practically everyone retreats into the city and works on specialized craft or academic work, with a strict dichotomy between the seasons and the types of things that get done during them. 

Another thing that the forest landscape has pushed in my world is the need for reliable transit across the continent. Because going deep into the forest can be incredibly dangerous, the great majority of people go along ‘the Traveler’s Road’ which is a system of roads that criss-cross the continent and allow for travel to and from most major coastal cities. This road is guarded and maintained by a group called The Traveler’s Guard, essentially an international group that travels with large processions/migrations in order to keep them safe. So you see a continent that is (at least when the game starts) more united than you would perhaps think - but that unity is something that can be threatened, as my players are starting to see (something that I am incredibly interested to see progress in game!).

There are many other thoughts to be had, but I suppose I shall leave it at that for now! I’ve had this setting floating around in my head for probably... two years now? and I wasn’t developing it as much as I wanted so I finally decided to just take the leap and run it for an amazing group of folks as my first ever dnd campaign, and it has been so so fun! Its definitely a work in progress and more things develop every session and pretty much every day as I think about it an incredible amount. Let me know if you ever want to know more! A Look Inside Lev’s Brain

The Beautiful Mess that is Jeon Levka

Is a very artistic boy

Used to paint, draw, write, legit anything that had to do with art he’s tried it out at least once in his life

Finds himself more drawn to poems and song writing obviously

But he also loves doodling on anything as long as he has a writing utensil in hand

Has gotten in trouble a few times because he ends up vandalizing set props or just random areas he ends up in

Talks big but won’t do shit about most things

Like he’ll joke about doing something on purpose but when someones like “bet” he just goes “oh… uh… wow look at the time…”

That one kid that swears a bunch at home but when in public he pretends he doesnt

Perhaps the occasional swear or two in English or Russian but its usually under his breath

Please I’m imagining him stubbing his toe in public and running off to a closet or something to swear his heart out

His duality is insane and I’m not talking about onstage vs offstage

I’m talking about him saying philosophical shit one second and the next he can’t even form a sentence correctly

He will also go from being a responsible teenager if thats a thing to whining about wanting  chicken nuggets or a McDonalds kids meal istg

Ever need proof just go to his studio where he has been all day producing his next album

On his fifteenth red bull and binge eating an entire bucket of strawberry ice cream (yes he’s that kind of person)

Very shy at first, once you get to know him, Lev turns out to be extremely expressive

Anything that he owns is decorated personally by him with stickers, extra accessories, pictures, even just outright scribbling his name onto it

Sort of hoards things as well

Like his dorm is a organized mess of random posters, trinkets and decorations he got as gifts or found while travelling

The only thing he doesn't hoard his stuffed toys (cause he only has one and never discloses he has one in the first place lmao)

Can’t let things go because it has sentimental value to it in some way

Aka that one rock he thought looked cool on the day he went for a hike, you get what I mean

Lately though Lev has been at least sticking to a certain aesthetic so he doesn’t look like a random cluster of things he picked up from the street

Lev’s been interested in horror and the supernatural since he was a child

Loves watching horror movies and creepy shows on TV, and lately he loves any show that looks into ghosts, cryptics and just straight up criminals

Has a collection of Junji Ito manga and other horror books on his shelf and has posters of said media pasted around his dorm

Besides horror Lev also enjoys mystery themes and anything that has dark undertones or themes

He even tries to channel the aesthetic in his work HINT HINT

But going back to his love for the supernatural (no he hasn’t discovered Twilight and only knows the plot by memes)

Dives into a lot of mythology, old legends, etc etc

One thing leads to another and Lev usually finds himself looking through witchy sort of places both in real life and on the web

Not entirely invested but who knows—

Sometimes fans find out those things about him and when he gets asked the question he usually just says its for fun and he’s just curious

Cut to him sitting on his bedroom floor trying to understand how tarot cards works or searching up anything to do with astrology

Besides the fact that he’s an old soul 

Like don’t get him wrong, he’ll get heavily invested in the Victorian era for as long as humanely possible

But don’t forget he’s still a child teenager but eh

Pretty obvious the kid plays horror games but he is also an avid fan of single player games 

No he cant play any mmos cause he’s scared shitless of people on those platforms

Like he has some on his phone but he won’t play them unless he’s with friends

Goes on stan twitter whenever he’s bored and he’s really only in it for the memes that thing can produce dear God his private account is just flooded with retweets of 20 different versions of the same meme

And when he’s not working, Lev makes songs out of vines and other shit in his free time

Prolly has his own tiktok but its on private 

Fans know though… how could they not he does tiktok dances whenever things get awkward during vlive

Yes he does play his cursed songs on vlive and always has this look on his face like “i did that”

“Today on vlive we will be looking at cursed fandoms, did yall know theres one about—“

“Guys I got new mods on minecraft—“

Will also go on a 3 hour rant about his stupid conspiracy theories he whips up and they aren’t even good ones they’re like ones about food half the time

And dear Lord his sense of humour is just as bad

He’ll make dad jokes whenever humanely possible and if he can’t do that its just quoting things 24/7

Has a vine/tiktok response for anything you throw at him and it hurts. It really hurts

The Adventure Zone

If youre on tumblr youve probably heard of this already. It’s created by the McElroys, and follow the adventures of Taako, Magnus and Merle and a lot of fun other side characters all voiced by Griffin. Its hilarious and full of goofs, but the story it weaves Will make you cry by the end, there are so many plot twists, gays, found family tropes, its just ugh. amazing. very good to listen to if u want a laugh tbh, but the episode are pretty long, up to an hour and a half. but the story is beautiful, the characters are amazing, n i feel like im constantly laughing at jokes i dont even understand bc the mcelroys r Just That Funny. there are also other arcs u can listen to, like amnesty, which is about a trio of monster hunters, commitment, which is about superheros, and dust, which is a western supernatural mystery!

EOS 10

This is for sure one of my favourite podcasts ever. The characters are so easy to love and all so complex with very human issues, except its set in space surrounded by aliens so the shenanigans are never-ending and all so, so entertaining. the general plot is about dr. dalias, a surgeon on the space station EOS 10, and his friends and coworkers dr. urivdian, jane, and levi the hypochondriac, chaotic alien prince (and akmazian, the gay space pirate). the relationships between the characters are to die for, the gays are beautiful, and its fucking hilarious. 10/10 recommend, the episodes are relatively short between 10-15 minutes so its very easy to listen to.

Wolf 359

This was the second podcast I ever listened to, and will forever be held close in my heart. it starts off as a funny, light-hearted podcast based on the logs of communications officer doug eiffel, an astronaut aboard the USS Hephaestus, a spacecraft with only 2 other crewmembers, commander Minkowski and scientist Hilbert. eventually more characters are introduced such as captain lovelace, and the SI-5 crew Jacobi, Kepler, and Maxwell. the series goes from something entertaining and joking to a story with an unfolding plot that honestly blows me away, morally grey characters and the complex relationships between everyone, and amazing character development. the episode start out pretty short but they get longer as the plot progresses. you’ll laugh too many times to count, find yourself crying near the end and wonder how you got here, and fall in love w the characters, the jokes and the mystery. i cant recommend it enough (eiffels development ugh my fucking boy…..)

The Penumbra Podcast

This podcast is so fucking fun. its a detective-noir type storyline set far into the future on mars. it follows PI Juno Steel, a detective in Hyperion City, and all the cases he lands and has to solve. its intriguing as hell, the characters draw you in completely bc theyre so layered and complex but so easy to love, its gay as FUCK (theres only one straight person on mars lol) and its v enjoyable listening to juno’s character development and his interactions with other characters (namely nureyev and rita). im literally never bored listening to this podcast, and if the detective theme wouldn’t typically be your thing i swear you should listen to it anyway because with how its set on mars, in space, in the future, there are things youd never imagine and worldbuilding so smooth and surprising and fun. there are hilarious moments, tragic moments, heartbreaking moments, heart-healing moments, and just. the whole thing is brilliant dude. i adore it. (theres also a lot of mini episodes set in different universes like old western lesbians, and the Second Citadel, which runs alongside juno’s universe and is kind of a knights vs monsters fun thing but theyre also all bisexual lol).

Time Bombs

This is a mini-podcast made by the same creators as wolf 359. its only 3 episodes long so if u want something quick to listen to this is v good! its about a bomb squad on new years eve as Simon Teller tries to break the record of most bombs defused in a year. its very funny, easy to listen to, and just a fun lil thing!

Lake Clarity

Now this boy is a horror podcast. Its about a bunch of teens who go up to the abandoned Camp Clarity for a trip together before they graduate. they uncover abandoned military bases and a conspiracy, mutations and monsters, and get picked off one by one. i admit i never finished the second season but i greatly enjoyed the first! it was interesting (and they acknowledged the slightly basic set up in show a lot lol) but i like it!

King Falls AM

I only recently started listening to this one but its so good dude!! its set in a radio show in King Falls, hosted by Sammy and Ben. Sammy just came to the town from the city and Ben has lived in King Falls his whole life: we listen to the strange events happening around town as they happen and ben and sammy report on them, listen to the residents send in calls about their weird situations, meet new characters, and get a lil freaked out by some spooky things! its funny, its odd, its creepy at times, its the perfect blend of humour, supernatural, and horror!

This is one you’ve probably heard of as well. WTNV is a radio show hosted by Cecil Palmer, a citizen of the town of Nightvale, which has got to be the weirdest town in the world. its delightfully strange, entertaining, fun to listen to, and i havent finished it but i like it and i know a TON of other people adore it, its v popular!!

The Magnus Archives

Another horror podcast, I never got very far through it (mainly bc i just. struggle to listen to jon’s voice and accent rip) but the gist of it is a british archivist is going thru some archives n recording the stories. its full of monsters, supernatural stuff n creepy stories. people love it, if ur into horror n creepy stuff then i recommend this one!

The Bright Sessions

Another one I never got very far through, it follows dr. bright, a therapist for the ‘strange and unusual’ and her sessions with various super-powered people, for example empaths, time-travellers, etc etc. im not sure why i didnt get v far thru bc it is v intriguing and has a lot of potential, im sure id pick it back up one day! i think it could have a lot of cool overlapping storylines if u dig that!

Directive

This short podcast is very interesting, its about a man who is on a spacecraft alone looking after people in stasis for many years, and isnt allowed any real contact with other people on the ship outside of a video call once a night. there are plot twists, you will randomly find yourself crying by the end of it bc of the raw emotion, and it can be a little slow in the start but its worth the quick listen!! it goes into the effects of isolation and moral dilemmas on a person and is v interesting!
