Tumblr from a Twitter user perspective

as someone who had Tumblr as a major site they used for a long time and then went over to Twitter. I can say Tumblr as it is fine. Perfectly fine with it reblog chains. Its how its always been and makes it unquie.

Why did i move to Twitter? Cause when Tumblr decided to not do nsfw my original blog was restricted (still is despite my appeals) and I lost motivation to continue my blog because of it.

I regret joining Twitter. I really do. It has its moments but it is just a hot garbage pool of toxic vomit everywhere. I see it 24/7 on my tl and it's so hard to escape. Not to mention that it is IMPOSSIBLE to find art on twt or anything really at all.

Tumblr is a place where I look up what I want and I fucking find it. I love reblog chains that's like the whole way we communicate? Where the best memes come from, other ppl building ontop of another. Its a sense of community and connection i missed from this place.

Twitter is so- fucking hollow and it feels like despite having akot of followers no one is there. I'm sure other Twitter users who are cretaors could agree. Hell major artists that were in Twitter said they felt better coming back ot to Tumblr.

Yes it takes a minute to get adjusted to the site but it doesn't take that long at all. It doesn't make sense to bow to new comers cause I can assure you, if Tumblr is in the red. Twt users are not gonna save you. Absolutely not. The reason twt users are even coming here is BECAUSE of the stupid bulkshit Elon Musk keeps making over there. Making changes of the core functions of the site (take fucking notes Tumblr), breaking it and making just so anti user friendly.

Tumblr doesn't need go conform. It need to lean into it's strengths that make it different and BETTER than the other sites. It hasn't survived this long for no reason. If its struggling you need to ask your USERBASE what they think you could improve. Cause right now. This ain't it.

I'm honestly surprised there isn't talk of a strike or tag of some sort to voice our discontent for this rn. It is Tumblr.

uhhhhhh so i guess we start with picking a character u really Vibe with tm? I KNOW THIS SOUNDS LIKE COMMON SENSE BUT LIKE ive been considering making a genshin ask blog for a while now but i never really got to it cos i couldnt really decide on a character (plus the fact that their outfits are. so intricate. is also a hmm since i try to follow details to a t) (at first i wanted to do zhongli, but i feel like to be able to muse him well u need to know the lore super super well, which i dont n im too lazy to research on that aha. n u know how much i respect characterizations, especially for such a complex character like him. i also considered xiangling for a period of time mostly for guoba but also like i have 2+1 blogs here n having one more might not be a very good idea aha) (as for aesop he was my Hyperfixation Character tm also cos i looked at his kit n went Yep i could work with this. probably)

so assuming ur not a dumbass like me n u kinda know who u wanna pick, id actually say to snoop around here for other ask blogs n kinda get a feel of the... scene? is that the word? or like u know, other blogs that u can potentially vibe with. ive run a couple of ask blogs before this current one (both that have died for different reasons) n from my experience interacting with other blogs (if theyre okay with it, i think most should be) is pretty fun. it also kinda helps get ur blog around to other ppl on other blogs so they can go Oh whats this cool shit n check u out, n its also a reason why we kinda reblog promo posts for other blogs (also cos we’re always excited when someone new comes on, its really the more the merrier. we see all :eyes:). interacting with other blogs is also an option when ur inbox is looking real roomy too

another reason why i havent exactly done a genshin blog is that idk i cant actually seem to find genshin ask blogs around (i have seen rp blogs, or those that answer asks with mostly text instead of art, but thats. not my thing since i hate my own writing aha) (i did find one aether blog some time ago, but for some reason i hardly see them around anymore??? idk man i might be wrong). its not like im trying super hard to find them ask blogs, so im sure they exist out there (hopefully?? im not sure but im being optimistic). i mean theres nothing wrong with just starting an ask blog without others around, but for me i do find a difference when i interact with other ask blogs n when i dont, n i prefer when theres others to have fun with (unfortunately i couldnt find any ask blogs to interact with in my previous fandom. i tried, but the blogs i approached seemed to go inactive shortly afterwards...) plus u get to meet friends that way too :D (i made a lot of friends via idv askblogs n its really been a joy vibing with others)

as for the idv scene. gestures around me. unfortunately there are a lot of ask blogs that arent that active anymore, but theres still some of us who are alive n kicking empty inboxes, n im sure everyone would love to see a new face around. winks at u. also there seems to be a lot more blogs popping up lately, which is really heartening to see.

then u kinda just. make ur blog? n a starting introduction post so ppl can reblog it n spread the word XD n yay u have a blog i guess??? XD

i gotta say tho. dont expect ur blog to take off immediately (especially for smaller fandoms like idv, tvbh i didnt think my blog would even get half this far when i started cos of how non existent idv tumblr seemed to be) n ur inbox will probably be looking pretty empty a lot of the time (or at least filled with some that u havent quite thought of how to reply to yet aha) (but also like empty inboxes happen pretty often, im sure most of us here have experienced this problem)

in the case of the first ask blog i ever started, it never really took off at all. ngl it was kind of demoralizing n depressing but to be fair i had picked one of the more obscure characters in the series, so obscure that many ppl in the fandom would have never heard of this character before. if u wanted to know, i took a character that only appeared in the 2nd musical of the series, who also made a very brief cameo in the manga to acknowledge his existence within that universe. thats how obscure my character was, but i went with him purely because he was my favourite character. i will say though i did enjoy it while it lasted n i learnt a lot from the experience, n i think thats whats important really.

i guess this kinda leads on (not really but let me digress) to the whole uhhhh thing where if u choose a more popular character, u get more attention. which is fine i guess? if u really vibe with the character, i mean theyre popular for a reason. n choosing a more popular fandom (like genshin) would objectively also get u more viewers n numbers. but like honestly i believe that ask blogs are meant for u to have fun with, n like trying to get popular gets tiring pretty fast (this shouldnt be like a main goal, but u know sometimes u subconsciously also want that gucci follower count n bomb ass notes or something. i used to be guilty of this until i realized it isnt worth it) especially if ur not enjoying yourself in the process. (case in point: my previous fandom was considerably larger n my blog got about 700 followers within a year or so, but it got very tiring n stressful to maintain after my interest in it died, n no one was really interacting with the blog even though i tried which kinda made it even more depressing despite the so called success n popularity of the blog)

anyway on a less serious note, theres a lot of fun stuff u can do with the ask blog, like some ask blogs have really fancy tags that i really like n try to do but also like not really HAHAHAHA. i kinda just channel what i want to see in an ask blog into my own ask blogs (good art is one, i try very hard for it to be good :,DD another is characterization, n others is just extra miscellaneous arts n stuffs like au ideas or memes. these are also somethings u could work on during ask box downtimes perhaps)

uhhh another side thing is like a posting schedule i guess? like ppl would be more likely to interact (i think) if ur blog is relatively active, n this is usually determined by the last post u made (i think XD). but like generally for blog maintenence id say try to kinda find a frequency that ur comfortable with?? cos i know my once a day posting is kinda insane if i wasnt so hyperfixated on all of this n fight the urge to dump all ur replies when u finish them XD (though ive seen some blogs do that n they do it pretty frequently so its pretty nice to know once u see their post u can spend some time going through the latest batch of posts XD) the queue function is pretty useful here even though i truthfully have never really used it, i kinda just post from my drafts really but it also helps to space out ur content to seem somewhat active especially when u dont have the time to be working on replies sometimes. i hope u know what im trying to say here aha

ANYWAY that was like my 1.5 cents cos i dont even think its worth 2 cents HAHAHAHAH these are just my thoughts from running all my blogs up till now, some that are still running n the others that have just died a natural death. i wouldnt actually delete them (theyre still around actually XD) cos theyre kinda like archives n i can look back at what i did last time. cos ngl i made some high quality stuff back then, n i dont even know how i managed to do that aldhflhdsgk. also ppl do look at archive blogs every now n then for the content thats there yknow

Second, genuine question (and out of curiosity): Why do you self reblog your posts often? People can see your posts on their dash, and even on the search thingy. The search thingy doesn't let people see your self-reblogs (just the original post). Even though I've kinda been on and off of Tumblr for years, I don't really get how it works, so I'm a bit confused as to why you and other bloggers self-reblog your/their own posts?

I also was on and off tumblr for a long time and often, but I can answer it based on my own experience on this becasue it was confusing to me too when I first met with self reblogging.

first of all self promotion isn't a bad thing and i'm staring to think some of people here see it as a crime

compared to old one nowday t/mblr is a mess, lot of people left this site and most of them were content creators (either artists or gifmakers) and back then it seemd more welcoming to editors? People would rb your stuff no matter your popularity becasue hey it is content from my fav series i wanna see more i wanna keep it on my blog and show it to others so there was no need for people to self reblog becasue it circulated around a lot on its own.

new people who join this app are raised on i/stagram t/itter and/or f/book where LIKES means everything, you show your support by liking posts THIS NOT APPLY TO TUMBLR AND NEVER DID [you can check this amazing post about rebloging]. As nice as it is to get likes on your post becasue it is like a pat on a head - it is only a pat, doesn't mean anything on a long run. Reblog = spreading. If people don't spread it we stay unnoticed and we tend to self reblog more.

another thing that changed is: people no longer scroll from top to the last post they saw before going to sleep, cos why would they? You wake up in the morning open app while eating breakfast or drinking coffee and you sroll past ten or twenty post or an equivalent of hour or two of your absence - you dont go deeper cos it would be a waste of time - again, I say USUALLY, some ppl still do this and it is ok either way - which leads us to main point of self/reblog:

DIFFERENCE in TIME ZONE not all of our followers live in the same time-zone, when I post something in my free time it doesn't mean others have it too, most of them are probably sleeping or in working place at that hour. We self reblog so people who were absent (and we think might be interested in - becasue why not? they follow us for a reason right?) can see it when they get back on here. By reblogging ourself multiple times, that puts the post back on the follower’s dash and hopefully gives them a chance to see it.

most of people follow ton of blogs (one of my friend I met here told me they follow over 1k blogs) imagine even half of these blogs posting regulary, a few things per hour, the dash is messy and crowded OUR EDITS TEND TO GET LOST IN IT. Most of people follow a lot of blogs and might miss our posts becaue their dashes are WAY more active than these who follow five or ten blogs.

t/mblr fandoms aren't welcoming to new creators in my experience, to get notes you need to be popular/have lot of followers but you can't have lot of them if your posts aren't spread/seen and so on and so on it go in circle (a lot of ppl also only reblog popular posts and avoid these with litte of notes - don't know why it is like this, maybe they think these posts are suspicious?) so with self reblog we also give some of these fake notes to make a post more appealing, i guess? this one is just speculation.

the search function you mentioned is very rarely used tbh people don't go to search for things daily, they usually only do this when they join new series/ship/etc to check if there is something. People usually stick to what they see on their dashes. AND most importantly this option doesn't work as it should. It is some type of algoritm that promote post that are alive/active - even if your post is relativy new it might not show in search becasue it died quickly (as if it wasn't interacted with for some time). With search option it is 50/50 your thing either show there or not. ALSO REMEMBER search option is a terrible promoted thingy that doesn't show you everything so you better stick to /tagged/ thing you can enter manually while on dash if you are using web t/mblr.

people no longer go straight to specific blogs to check if they missed something, they might do it for their besties (as they call it) but other than that DASH is all people see and focus on, so the more often content creators self/reblog the higher chance followrs will see it.

we are not paid for what we do and it come to everything: edits, gifs, arts, writing, video and META POST we are not paid for it and no matter how many people say notes are just numbers these numbers are our motivational payment, the less you get the less you create because you just don't feel the point of sharing your creations if it is not received well or at all.

when I started posting I used to post new content daily even twice a day, nowdays seeing most of my edits not being well recieved in fandom I lost motivation to the point I was thinking of quiting because it didn’t give me joy anymore and I'm still considering it.

I personally never felt bothered seeing self rebbloged post, I follow a bunch of content creators, some of them sr twice a day some each hour, some more or less often. It often helped me to see something I would missed becasue I wasn't here and personally it often give me joy to see the post I remember seeing that had 2 notes when I rb it and now it is 500 or more.

to anyone who read it and still think self reblog is a bother: do not tell people to stop self reblogging. If you genuinely have a problem with self reblogging, just unfollow or block the person who does it and don’t make a fuss over it!

I kinda need some advice and I thought maybe you could help me out I'm rlly sorry if I'm bothering you or I'm just pushing my problems to you but I had been experiencing some symptoms of ADHD (ever since I was a child) but I'm not sure since Its only symptoms and maybe Its just me over reacting and I don't rlly wanna say to ppl like "Hey I'm a self diagnosed ADHD since I have symptoms" that's just fucking rude and weird but usually going to a Psychiatrist is kind of taboo in our country and I don't rlly have the time for it and I just wanna know what to do I'm rlly confused and stressed I need some advice (don't rlly wanna talk to family or friends since again mental illness is kinda taboo around here)

Uhh, I’m not the best at advice, and I certainly haven't been through your situation, but I can try.

I want to start by saying self-diagnosing isn’t rude or wrong and don’t feel bad if you do it. There’s a big difference between someone saying “I’m so OCD” when they just like things orderly vs. someone genuinely showing signs/symptoms of a certain disorder and feeling as if that explains why they are the way they are. 

And some people can only self-diagnose because the medical industry isn’t always the best. It’s racist and often time sexist. Women, people of color, and just a lot of people who don’t fit the cookie-cutter model of a certain mental illness get swept aside and their issues go ignored. And money plays a big role too. Not everyone can pay and/or has the insurance to see a psychiatrist to get the diagnosis. 

Self-diagnosis isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes, it’s all someone can do to get some sort of relief, comfort, and understanding of what they’re going through.

As for you, I’d spend some time reading about ADHD and the symptoms. There’s predominantly hyperactive, predominantly inattentive, and combined.  There’s plenty of websites that outline the criteria that psychiatrists use.

If you genuinely believe you have it, it isn’t wrong to self-diagnose. Look around the internet, maybe mention it to your doctor (only if you feel comfortable enough- if you don’t, given your situation, it’s okay, don’t put yourself in a potentially bad situation), and just educate yourself on the symptoms you personally experience and possible ways to cope and manage life with untreated ADHD. 

And if you’re wrong in the self-diagnoses, what’s the worse that would happen? You’re educated about something new? You found ways to help symptoms that you share with ADHD? Find ways to better yourself and understand what’s going on?

Just take it slow with yourself. It’s beyond frustrating at times. I know. I went through twenty-one years of my life undiagnosed and I was frustrated with my inability to properly function, keep on track, and just remember basic things.

Book anon here to say today is a happy day because it is dk and vernon day ^0^ the fact they share bdays makes my heart so big like djakdnaks that's the best thing really! Back on topic, I am happy that in the fandoms I'm in, update blogs or accounts are well loved so no drama there but I agree on cc peeps, my gosh the decline of them is obvious for the past 2 years =/ I remember 2018 the carat fandom here was HUGE with creators and lots of notes but now...its hard to see more than 200 for some and while numbers don't matter because you should ALWAYS be doing this for fun, its so shocking to see the interaction go so low and its more likes. I do have a theory as to why this is the case and it might be due to nowadays, people on Tumblr find reblogging alot to be "too much" akaspamming. I would know because some told me I do this and I'm like ??? I am simply reblogging content I like and if it means hitting the rbelog limit so be it djajdjw. Legit idk why its seen as bad nowadays when everyone used to reblog alot and no one complained so maybe this could be why? Again a theory but it would make sense and its a shame if this is the case :c I admit I like stuff because I sometimes do reblog it for a color theme but mostly I hit the reblog limit so I want to reblog it later xD

but yeah i joined carat tumblr around late 2017/early 2018 (i made this side blog during oh my era but I'd been reblogging svt stuff on main before then) and I'm p sure most if not all the cc's i originally followed are inactive now :( obviously like you said content creators should make content for fun and bc they want to and not for the notes, but it's understandably disheartening when less people are interacting with it and even the people who do still see your content are (at least seemingly) less enthusiastic about it (ie liking but not reblogging it, less ppl writing things in the tags or replies, etc.)

but that's so wild to me? i feel like to some extent people feel entitled to have every or any gif or fanart or fan content on their platform of choice, but like if an artist posts something on tumblr but not on twt or instagram it doesn't HAVE to be on twt or insta. people can make a tumblr (or whatever platform) account if that's the only place a creator is active and they really want to see their content. and if people want to share something cool to another platform it is not hard to just post a link to the original post and tell people to check it out. like i do that every once in a while if there's a translation that doesn't allow reposts, but i still want ppl to know that trans exists if they wouldn't normally. and yeah!! you're gonna get less engagement that way!! but that's when you need to question whether your intention is really to share something cool w people who wouldn't normally see it or if you just want clout from this cool thing for yourself

and obviously not everyone who reposts things wo credit or permission has such innocent intentions as "i want to share this cool thing" but i think in a lot of cases it is something similar to that where ppl see something and they want to use it or share it for whatever reason and they just forget that it's something an actual person took the time to create and chose to share it. fan creations, unless otherwise specified, are not like memes in that they're intended to be shared and edited and copied to hell and back

but yeah pinterest is the worst in terms of reposts. like very little if any of the content on there (at least that's fandom related) is original content. the vast majority is reposts from other platforms without credit. a few weeks ago i saw someone on twt post like an old SVT photo or something and someone asked where it was from and they were like 'idk i saw it on pinterest' and when i tell u my blood boiled dhfkfj like!! ok!! so you're reposting a repost and u have no idea what the original source is... great

but yeah i have no idea what SVT is gonna do with pinterest... guessing it's just gonna be pledis posting official/behind photos that they also post on twt anyway. it really looks like it's something bh made them create given other bhl artists also have pinterests they're all following each other. also pledis didn't even officially announce the new account opening anywhere as far as I've seen so like. i think they really don't care dhfkfj

If I had a time machine would I go back or visit the future: Time travelling is problematic, so I wouldn’t touch that if possible, but I am tempted to travel to the future to see whether humanity has died off yet and if so what caused it. Maybe then we can convince the old hacks in power today that they need to see things in the long term and start doing something to prevent the doom of future generations or make sure that what’s good stays good for the future.

What’s my favorite food: I like a lot of different foods, but the foods I get more excited about than others are anything stew- or soup-like, like curries, stews and spicy soups, any form of potato, raw seafood (e.g. sushi, raw shrimp in garlic/lime/chili/fish sauce), and bubble tea.

Favorite books/films/shows/games:

Books: I read a lot, but am really not an avid reader of Actual Books. I enjoyed the Harry Potter series, and a few years back really enjoyed the Captive Prince series. I also recently read the His Dark Materials series, and while I didn’t really like the ending, I really, really liked the relationship development between the two main characters.

Shows: Community - this show has a special place in my heart. BBC’s Sherlock is always a good one. The Good Doctor has also been very enjoyable. And more recently, The Boys. Season 1 just aired and I really like it. Some of the characters are way too one-note for my liking, but overall the series and its commentary on society and fame came out at the perfect time. 

Films: The Lord of the Rings trilogy - I binge-watch the whole extended edition when I’m down and need to rejuvenate my entire soul. Constantine is a B-movie I can watch over and over again without feeling bored, and it has Keanu Reeves. Thor Ragnarok is absolutely delightful *pounds fist on the table*. Other films that left an impression on me are the first The Matrix and the first How To Train Your Dragon (that shit hit hard).

Games: I have been a long-time fan of The Sims series, though I have been deeply unimpressed with the offerings/pricing of The Sims 4, so I’ve just been sticking to Sims 3. I hope Sims 5 is better, so I can play a more optimized/less laggy game already.

Lucky number: I wish I had one. Wish it would appear in my dreams, so that I know which number lottery ticket to buy.
