Pour Some Sugar

1,334 words || AU, Bakerverse timeline, Thinly Veiled Threat, Patriot is her own warning, Baking, Fluff, Sex Mentioned, Patriot/The Deep, Patriot & Reader, Homelander/Reader, Homelander/Baker ||
A little gift for @hom3landr & her Baker - this fits in with her Bakerverse.
Border by Saradika
Tumblr media
“Well, don’t you smell sweeter than brown sugar.”
You still the second you hear that distinctive voice, quaking as you slowly begin to turn around, coming face to face with her.
Patriot.
Long blonde tresses cascade over her shoulders, a wolfish grin on her cherry red lips and a fierce look in her captivating blue eyes; she’s the last woman in the world you’d want to be alone with. Homelander hasn’t held back his feelings about the Seven’s newest addition.
“Can I help you?” You ask, trying to stand your ground but shrinking when she steps closer.
“You can. Homelander raves about your baking; I’ve even had a chance to taste your pastries. They were utterly divine, to die for.”
The way her eyes run over you - you’re not sure if she’s here for any other reason than to eat you alive. Either way, you’re terrified of her and, more specifically, her intentions.
“I’m glad you liked them,” your voice shakes, not fully believing the sincerity of the compliment.
“Convinced me that you’d be the perfect person to help me with this little task,” she steps closer.
“You see, I have this ‘family recipe’ from my ‘grandma’,” she says with air quotes. “It’s for sugar cookies, and I want to make them for my Sugar Cookie, but I’m having a problem getting them right.”
Sugar Cookie - her pet name for The Deep.
Another thing Homelander has been incredibly vocal to you about. At Vought Tower, they’ve been very open about their relationship, and from what you’ve heard, it won’t be long until it’s made public, with Vought’s marketing team has been working on the ‘exclusive’.
You notice she starts pouting, and suddenly, you become aware that you’ve not said anything for a while. Whether it’s from fear or because your mind has wandered, you don’t know.
“You will help me, won’t you? It’ll mean so much to him. And I’m sure Prince Charming would be happy to hear that you’ve been so accommodating.”
You nod despite your inner terror, nervously taking the recipe from her hand and reading it carefully. It’s an old recipe from the late 1950s or early 1960s, a period of baking you’re not fluent in, but you’re not a novice either. Yet there’s something about it that bothers you.
It’s her grandma’s recipe? But she was born in a lab?
“It should be easy to make; I can have them ready for you by-”
“Ah, ah, ah.” She waggles a finger in your face. “You’re not making them for me; you’re helping me make them. I want him to know I made them for him especially.”
The idea of spending the afternoon helping her bake in your kitchen fills you with nothing but pure dread. This is your safe space, a little paradise where you make delicious baked goods for Homelander. She tilts her head, those unhinged eyes tinged with curiosity.
“How do you feel about flying?”
Tumblr media
Patriot’s penthouse is imposing.
The dark green walls and hardwood floors are complimented by tasteful furniture, the exact opposite of what you expected. Despite her earlier question about flying, she didn’t carry you here; you’d been very forthcoming with your fear.
And she’d just… accepted it.
She was more than happy to let you make your own way to Vought Tower, which further exacerbated the unsettling feeling currently taking up residency in your gut.
“There you are! I almost thought you wouldn’t make it.”
She appears almost from nowhere, no longer dressed in her suit but in civilian clothes: checkered pyjama bottoms, a Deep Thought with The Deep tank top, and no bra.
She’s very well endowed.
“Follow me; I’ll show you the kitchen.”
Her kitchen is lavish, the kind of kitchen you’ve dreamed about, fitted with the latest appliances. It would be perfect for opening a bakery, but you know everything here costs more than what you make in a year.
“Don’t be shy,” she coos gently, carefully grabbing your arm and tugging you closer. “You can stand next to me. I don’t bite, well, I won’t bite you.”
She gives you a toothy grin - flashing her teeth nearly threateningly.
All the ingredients are already laid out, and you spy a bin brimming with burnt and malformed cookies. At least she wasn’t lying about her motives to get you here.
“Now, how do we proceed?”
Tumblr media
Baking with Patriot has been an eye-opening experience.
You’ve gone from terrified to cordial, something dancing along the border of friendly. Clearly, there is more to Patriot than meets the eye and some vulnerability lingering just below the surface, but that has been kept out of your reach.
“They are perfect!” She squeals, pulling the cookies out of the oven.
You hover behind her, directing her towards the kitchen island and, more importantly, the cooling rack.
“They’ll need to cool for a little while,” you say, doing your best to hang back and watch while she carefully moves the baking paper from the tray to the rack.
She’s giddy with excitement and very pleased with her work, and her reaction makes your chest swell with pride. You’ve never considered teaching someone else to bake, but from what you’ve seen today, it might be an avenue worth exploring.
“While they cool, we can start making the-”
You stop midsentence when you see Homelander saunter into the kitchen, his eyes shifting between you and Patriot. He must have smelt the baking or you and come to investigate. He stands there, hands behind his back and a slight hint of disappointment in his eyes.
“I didn’t know you were going to be in the tower today,” he nearly huffs. “I thought you’d give me a heads up.”
You swallow, preparing your answer, only for Patriot to interject before you begin.
“She didn’t know she was going to be here either,” she rolls her eyes. “I needed some help baking, and seeing as you’re constantly raving about her, I thought I’d ask for expert help.”
‘Expert help’ - that makes you stand straight and proud, still avoiding Homelander’s gaze.
She scoffs, “Drop the betrayed act. She would have told you she was coming but probably didn’t want to worry you. After all, she’s been spending the afternoon with this ‘unhinged, big-titted, airheaded bitch.’”
Now that makes Homelander falter and makes you cringe - it’s probably one of the kinder things he’s called her.
“Look,” she continues, turning her body and looking between you and Homelander. “Once she’s finished here, I’m sure she’ll be happy to spend the evening with you.”
Homelander nods, shooting you a look of concern just as he leaves, glancing at you cautiously while he leaves. He obviously came here not only out of disappointment but also of worry for your safety.
“Now, you were talking about making icing.”
Tumblr media
Warily, you enter Homelander’s penthouse with a box full of iced sugar cookies as a peace offering.
You’d usually send him a message when you were heading to the tower, but you’d been so preoccupied with your fear that Patriot was luring you into a dangerous situation that the notion had bypassed you completely. Immediately, you’re pulled into a tight hug, the box hitting the ground.
“I was so worried about you,” Homelander mumbles into your hair. “What possessed you to help her?”
“She came by my apartment and asked… nicely. I was apprehensive about baking with her in my kitchen because that’s where I bake for you.”
He releases you from the hug, only to take your face in his hands and look deep into your eyes. “Just… next time, please let me know. I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
A kiss on your forehead has you closing your eyes and smiling. His protectiveness warms your heart, and it’s one of the many reasons why you love Homelander.
The little heartfelt moment, however, is ruined by the sounds of animalistic sex coming through the shared wall of Homelander’s penthouse, making you both cringe.
“He liked the cookies then.”

Rolan's performance issues (Part 1)
I am so mean to my blorbo's. Anyways, Part 1 (this part) is why Rolan has performance anxiety in the bedroom during Part 2.
Inspired by this post/ video.
I color coded the dialog for Rolan, Cal, and Lia for easier reading.
Suggestive, angst, hurt no comfort (part 1 only), insecurities, self-loathing, attachment issues, abandonment issues.
● (Link to Part 2)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rolan and Tav's relationship had been getting more physical as of late. The thought of them going all the way had Rolan as excited as it did nervous.
One morning during breakfast Cal and Lia noticed a hickey that Rolan's pajama shirt didn't quite cover, and as his siblings they were legally obligated to tease him about it.
"Rolan, I thought that Astarion only fed from Tav." Lia said, with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
Not having had his morning cup of coffee yet, Rolan didn't respond— he just looked at Lia with a mix of genuine confusion and mild trepidation.
"Astarion!? It looks as though he were attacked by a very large leech!" Cal replied with a shit eating grin.
**Rolan's face**
"What?" He asked, his sleep addled mind only functional enough to shamble around like a zombie that needed caffeine instead of brains. His tail started to sway in annoyance— he knew they were teasing him, but he didn't know about what.
Taking pity on him, Cal tapped his pointer finger against his own neck in the spot where Tav had left a hickey on Rolan's neck.
"You've got a..." Cal said, trailing off at the end of the sentence to let Rolan figure it out himself.
Rolan's eyes suddenly widened, his cheeks flushed as his hand shot up to cover the incriminating mark on his neck.
Cal and Lia burst into laughter as they continued to poke fun at a very unamused Rolan.
"Are you sure that Tav isn't a vampire Rolan?" Lia questioned her brother with mirth.
"Could you two please be mature about this?" Rolan asked, despite already knowing that the answer would be—
"No!" Lia and Cal gleefully him answered at the same time.
Gods, he was horrified, they were never going to let this go. Rolan pinched his nasion between his thumb and pointer finger in a futile attempt to stave off a headache.
"Is the Master of the Tower planning on using some magic to impress Tav in the bedroom?" Lia asked while wriggling her eyebrows suggestively.
"Do NOT bring my wizardry into your juvenile teasing, Lia." Rolan sternly warned.
"Yeah Lia, Rolan's magic isn't something that you should tease him about." Cal said to his sister, his voice and demeanor suddenly turning staid.
"It isn't?" Lia asked, surprised by Cal abruptly switching to Rolan's side.
"It isn't?" Rolan asked, surprised when Cal unexpectedly took his side. "I mean, you're right— it isn't. Thank you, Cal." He said with a pleased air of finality.
"Yeah well, I know it's a bit of a sensitive subject— with you having problems eh, performing your magic for someone who you've romantic feelings for." Cal said in comforting patronizing tone.
Rolan looked aghast as he asked "What in the hells are you talking about Cal? I've never had trouble perform-"
Cal cut Rolan off before he could finish his sentence. "Sarai, the bakers daughter."
Recognition dawned on Rolan's face. "I was fifteen, I was an inexperienced novice who barely understood magic!" He argued.
"Hahaha, oh yeah! I'd almost forgotten about that!" Lia cackled with delight.
"That was fourteen years ago!" Rolan reminded his impudent siblings.
"Her skin was the same shade of puke-green for almost a whole tenday, Rolan!" Cal reminded his flustered brother.
"Yeah, even the local healer didn't know that a miscast color spray could do that!" Lia added.
"I didn't have confidence in my magical abilities back then. I tried to cast a spell to impress her, and panicked when I couldn't! I got lucky that neither she nor I were injured!" Rolan said defensively.
"Oh you got lucky alright Rolan, just not in the way you were hoping you would." Lia jeered.
Before Rolan could respond, Cal added on to Lia's remark.
"He got lucky in another way on that day too, Lia! As had he not spectacularly failed in his attempt to seduce the fair maiden, he would've disappointed her by being unable to perform under pressure in the— I'd say bedroom, but storage room would be more realistic."
"I didn't know what I was doing! I was flying by the seat of my pants without any guidance..." Rolan said to his siblings, his vehemence waning as a horrible realization dawned upon him.
He stopped registering Cal and Lia's continuous taunts as his mind focused on a single, harrowing, thought: He is just as inexperienced now as he was then, all those years ago. Worse still, he was even more nervous now than he was as a hormonal teenager.
Up until now his lack of sexual and romantic experience hadn't been of any concern to him. He had his studies to focus on, he didn't have time for any "frivolous dalliances".
But now Rolan was pushing 30. He was in a romantic, soon to be sexual relationship. With a bard. A very attractive bard. Tav was honest about having had numerous lovers previous to him, and that hadn't much bothered the mage— until now.
Gods, he could hardly believe that Tav wanted to be in a serious relationship with him. Rolan knew what he was like; temperamental, orotund, and standoffish.
But Tav seemed to like him in spite of his flaws... maybe even because of them? No, He dared not to hope that such an absurd thought had any merit. Tav put up with his loathsome personality— lying to himself would only make it all the more painful when Tav eventually realizes that Rolan isn't worth the effort and abandons him.
Panic seized Rolan, he had to make sure that he didn't make a fool of himself when he and Tav eventually had sex. It had to be perfect. He had to be perfect, or Tav might see that Rolan didn't deserve to be loved.
"Rolan?" Cal gently called to his brother, both he and Lia having noticed how upset Rolan was.
They knew they went too far, that they hit a very sensitive nerve, because of Rolan's body language.
His shoulders were hunched up to his ears, his body stiff and his muscles tightly clenched. His hands were balled into fists to hide that they were shaking.
Rolan's breathing was strained, his eyes were looking towards them but he wasn't seeing the world around him. His face was carefully schooled into a neutral and unaffected look.
HIs tail held low and rigid, unmoving except for its spade which was twitching as it did when Rolan was particularly distressed.
"Hey, Rolan. We didn't mean it, we were just teasing." Lia said in an uncharacteristically gentle voice.
"Are you two quite finished?" Rolan asked, his voice clipped.
"...Yes, but Rolan we-" Cal replied before Rolan interrupted him.
"Good. Now if you'll excuse me I have a store to open and research to complete." Rolan said as he quickly strode away, his "breakfast" of black coffee left untouched and forgotten.
"Rolan!" Lia called after him, but she paused when Cal placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Forcing him to talk is only going to make things worse, Lia." Cal sagely counseled.
"Shit. You're right." Lia replied as she sat down and placed her head in her hands. "We went to far."
"We went way to far." Cal agreed, and told Lia "We need to apologize and make it up to him."
Lia lifted her head to look dejectedly at Cal. "Apologizing we can do, but how in the world would we make it up to him?" Lia asked.
But Cal did not respond, for he did not have an answer.
Elsewhere in the tower Rolan was trying to get ready for the day. But his dammed hands wouldn't stop shaking long enough for him to put his hair in its normal style.
"Zurgan!" Rolan cursed, hurling his hairbrush across his room in frustration. Letting out a heavy sigh as he heard a loud cracking noise.
"Oh wonderful job Rolan. You broke it." He said to himself, disappointment and self-disgust welling up inside him.
He paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and decided to send his simulacrum to man the register of Sorcerers Sundries today— he was in no mood to content with any ignorant, rude, customers.

Before I opened WildHeart Baked Goods, a cottage home bakery which specialized in challah, I was a novice baker. When I first got married, it was my mother-in-law who ignited my love of bread baking. Her ease with dough busted the myth that bread baking is difficult. So began my journey. Each week I baked, each week I became a better baker. My bread and my challah began to develop personality… my personality. Afterall, that’s what bread is; an embodiment of the baker, filled with their hopes, their dreams and their spirit.
My favorite bread to both bake and eat is challah, but not the challah you serve for Shabbat dinner. My ideal challah is served the next morning, for breakfast. There is something magical about Shabbat morning and Shabbat breakfast. The world almost stands a little still. Growing up, my most vivid Shabbat morning memories were at my aunt and uncle’s table filled with an array of special cakes and danishes served alongside tea and coffee. It was a special treat. As an adult, I try to bring that special Shabbat morning of pastries and cake into my own home with the concept of a breakfast challah. I began creating breakfast challah with leftover dough filled with cinnamon and sugar. Over the years, I have created many flavors of breakfast challahs that embrace the flavors of the season.
Winter breakfast challah will always be filled with bright citrus and marzipan. Marzipan, a traditional confectionary of Mizrachi, Sephardi and Eastern European Jews alike, is an unlikely breakfast food. However, when laminated into challah, it results in a delicate cross between challah and pastry, reminiscent of an almond croissant. The layers of the challah fall away in delicate folds of citrus-infused butter and fresh marzipan. Baked in a traditional babka crown shape, this challah makes the perfect centerpiece for your next brunch when the snow is deep and the days grow short.
Notes:
The temperature of the water should be delicately warm enough as for a baby’s bath. For those of you who don’t make it a habit of bathing babies; place a finger to the bottom of the cup of warm water. Keep it there a few moments. If it feels nicely warm without an “ouch” sensation, the water is the proper temperature.
If your marzipan feels a little too dry (it can happen, weather depending) add ½ Tbsp more water and blend it in.
If you don’t have an angel food cake pan (which is a tube pan with a flat bottom), you can use a Bundt pan. The inner ring of metal in these pans is essential for baking success because it allows airflow and heat to get to the center of the challah and create an even bake.
