Digimon’s troubled history with home video releases (and why the upcoming thing is very cool)

So, Discotek Media just announced Blu-ray releases of Adventure, one dubbed, and one in Japanese with subs. This is, of course, a big deal, because it’s the first time Adventure has ever gotten an official Japanese home video release in Western territories. But if you know Digimon’s very troubled history of home video releases and official localization, the details of this upcoming potential release are way more of a big deal than they even are on the surface.

Let’s talk about Digimon’s history with official licensing, official home video releases, and official translation!

Some minutiae about video stuff and technicals

Every Digimon series up to Savers aired in standard definition, and was released in DVD format (both Japanese releases in Japan and US-based releases with the English dub) in 480p (640 x 480 pixels). Unfortunately, this ultimately didn’t age well, because as monitors got bigger and high-definition, 480p became too small to see much of anything. On top of that, the Blu-ray format, having the digital data directly on it, is much better at data retention, so because of that there started to be demand for Digimon Blu-rays, including dubbed ones. The “ideal scenario” for a lot of people would have been a “dual audio” release, where you can have both the Japanese version and the dub on one disc and be able to switch audio tracks.

Unfortunately, a dual audio release is not possible for sheer logistics reasons, purely because: the dub had cuts! Short of redoing the whole editing from scratch, you can’t have footage that syncs up the Japanese and English audio, because the little cuts here and there the English audio is timed for would throw them off sync. Furthermore, the English dub had edits to the footage (airbrushing things to censor them out, or translating Japanese text), and if you’re acting in the interest of preservation, you do want to actually keep those edited frames. As a result, this is why Discotek’s releases are splitting the original Japanese version and the English dub; you can’t really treat them like the same product.

In any case, if you want Blu-ray releases in HD 1080p (in this case, 1440 x 1080 pixels), you run into a few logistics issues:

If you’ve ever tried to artificially upscale a picture into a bigger size, you’ll naturally run into some problems like pixelation and other unfortunate things, because in the end it wasn’t originally made for that bigger size. So imagine applying that to a whole video and you’ll understand why it’s not easy to just resize a video to 1080p and call it a day. Discotek has historically circumvented this problem by releasing an “SD-BD” format for shows that can’t be upscaled, but this doesn’t apply to Digimon in this case (for reasons you’ll see below).

There are Japanese Blu-rays, but the English dub footage has to be handled separately from the Japanese for the above reasons of dub cuts and edits. On top of that, as Discotek points out in their post, a lot of the English dub footage has worse quality tracing back all the way to the source.

Speaking of said Japanese Blu-rays, even those still have...problems.

The good thing is that the Japanese Blu-ray has more accurate colors to the original palette than the Japanese DVDs do. The bad thing is, uh, everything else. It might be hard to tell from this Tumblr upload alone, but something awful happened to the line quality and background details. It is, admittedly, somewhat better than dealing with DVD corruption artifacts (which is why Discotek still does an SD-BD format, since it’s better for preservation than DVDs), but it can be a bit painful to look at, and it’s why I still don’t use Blu-ray screenshots for this blog despite owning 02′s.

Now, on the other hand, you have the movies. I’ve made posts about this before (see: Digimon Adventure, Our War Game!, Hurricane Touchdown, and Diablomon Strikes Back), but the Japanese DVD releases for the movies came with some seriously bad color destruction, which is finally rectified in the Blu-rays. On top of that, the movies were made for giant wide screens, so we don’t have the upscaling problem anymore, right? Everything’s fine, right?

...Or you’d hope, but unfortunately, the Japanese Blu-rays for the movies have severe sound problems compared to the DVDs. One step forward, one step back.

So as for the reason why Discotek’s announcement is such a big deal: not only are they going through the work to salvage and repair the old English dub footage, they’re even upscaling it with AstroRes AI technology, which leads to the situation where their upscale is actually better quality than the official Japanese footage remaster. Wow. If they choose to use their own remastered version for the Japanese version, too, it might outright be better than the official Japanese release, which, if you know anything about American localized releases of Blu-rays compared to their original Japanese ones, doesn’t actually happen very often. (But it does happen quite a bit with Discotek, since they’re very big on media preservation of niche things.) There seems to be a lot of detail put into this release; their presses for the discs seem to be taking obvious cues from the Japanese release of the Adventure Blu-ray (the Adventure 15th anniversary box, not the Adventure and 02 combined one; in my very biased opinion, the former is superior from a design perspective anyway).

On top of the project being overseen by With the Will’s admin MarcFBR (who, conveniently, also happens to work at Discotek), the project also seems to have longtime veteran Chris McFeely (who ran a very important Digimon website back in the day that served as a valuable resource for English dub news) and longtime Digimon fan translator and fansubber onkeikun (if you follow anything Japanese Digimon-related, you probably owe her at least part of your soul), so it seems like we have reliable people who know their stuff on both the English dub and original Japanese ends. In the case of the latter, it also is reassuring to know that there’s potential extra quality control for the translation for the Japanese version, because, well...needless to say, the history of Digimon official translation hasn’t been great either.

Digimon’s very thorny history with official translations

Contrary to popular belief, while it’s definitely Adventure’s first time getting official subtitles on home video, it’s not actually its first time getting official subtitles at all. The first time this happened was back in 2013 when some Adventure subtitles appeared for a brief time on Netflix. Allegedly, the subtitles started off bootleg bad quality before eventually getting corrections, but unfortunately we don’t have a lot of records of them because of how quickly they were taken down shortly afterwards. If we count all of Digimon and not just Adventure, 02 used to have subs on Crunchyroll even before that (yes, weirdly enough, 02 actually had official subs before Adventure did) -- but they were infamously terrible, switching between Japanese and English dub terminology and just being permeated with mistranslations in general. “Mimi became a nutritionist in her epilogue career” is still probably being quoted somewhere out there.

In fact, Toei anime having good official subtitles (at the very least, good enough that recent series like Appmon or Ghost Game can be confidently recommended without concerns) is a fairly recent thing, and even then there’s often mishaps -- Super Sentai and Kamen Rider fans can report their fair share of problems in recent Shout! Factory releases, and let’s not forget that even Kizuna came out recently with some really bad problems (which, incidentally, the aforementioned onkeikun called out publicly). On the flip side, Adventure recently made it to Crunchyroll in 2021, with the caveat that it’s only available in Europe; the footage seems to be based on the Japanese Blu-rays, and while I’m not European and can’t confirm for myself, testimony is that the translation seems to be good.

Other non-Adventure series have varying degrees of luck. 02 also made it to Crunchyroll in Europe shortly after Adventure, and while the translation is better than it used to be, testimony indicates it’s not quite as good as Adventure’s. Tamers apparently had a short-lived time on Hulu, but, well...

...Yeah...

And, of course, the things that have never gotten official English subtitles: all of the theatrical movies up to the Savers one, X-Evolution (hoping for this one might be a really long shot), and all of Frontier and Savers. Savers, Xros Wars, and Appmon don’t even have Blu-rays in Japan (with Savers especially suffering from this because it means there’s absolutely nothing to preserve it in pure digital format).

How much should I hope for? I don’t know if Discotek intends to do the movies (including The Movie or the Japanese movies) or 02 and after; I want to hope so given that the company historically has gone to comprehensively cover things that can be even more obscure than this, but I imagine this isn’t a question they can easily answer now, and for the time being I hope people can support this release to hopefully get more. You’ll have to ask them and not me about the potential status of footage for The Movie, too, given that fans haven’t had access to clean footage for that in a very, very long time. (But of course, I don’t know if you should pester them too hard about it beyond just generally showing your support and requests; if they have plans for anything else right now, it’ll certainly be under NDA.) How far will they go with this? I don’t know, but I’m grateful for anything we get, and hopefully this will set a precedent for a brighter future going forward.

i finally decided to take the time & do a heavily requested gif tutorial! this will be very detailed & is how i make every single one of my gifs from start to finish! i’ll also include resources for ps downloads, actions, etc. if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask! & if this helps you, pls rb!!

TUTORIAL UNDER THE CUT!

i’m going to break it down into sections to hopefully make it easier to understand!

1. software i use

photoshop - i use photoshop cc 2020 on my macbook air but any version of photoshop with video timeline/frame timeline will work for creating gifs! i pay for my photoshop but i know there are ways to get it for free. if you don’t want to/can’t pay for photoshop, here (x, x, x, x) are some links to download it without paying!

mplayer osx extended - this is the software i use for my screencaps. there are a lot of software’s out there & i think it truly comes down to preference. i’m just more familiar with mplayer & the screencaps come out really smooth in my opinion. it’s free as well & here is a link to download it!

2. hq movie/tv show/video downloads

ok so i’ll be real, i never used t*rrents until recently & i’ve personally noticed a huge difference when it comes to quality. before using them, i was using files from MEGA & if you’re not comfortable with t*rrents, i would definitely recommend MEGA links! when it comes to downloading any videos, try to make sure they are 1080p or 2160p if available! 720p is also ok but always try to get 1080p. also i’ve found that with movies, 1080p Blu-ray versions look better but again, it’s all about preference!

t*rrents - i only use one t*rrent site which is r*rbg. they have a huge variety of tv shows & movies from what i can tell.

MEGA - MEGA is really nice for people that aren’t comfortable with t*rrents. the way i used to use MEGA was, i followed accounts on twitter that would upload MEGA links to tv shows. here (x, x, x, x, x, x) are some of the accounts that post a wide variety of links to MEGA downloads! i will say, the only downside to MEGA links is that they seem to take longer to download & you can cap out at a certain amount of GB each day.

folx - i use this to download stuff from r*rbg! download this before you try to download anything from r*rbg. its free to use & there are multiple sites you can download this software from but i’ll link a few right here (x, x, x this one is a link directly from the apple store but it costs $15.00). if you don’t want to download from any of those links, you can just simply look up ‘folx mac/windows download’ in google!

4k video downloader - i use this to download videos from youtube! it’s free as well & you can download it here!

3. screencaps

once you’ve downloaded a movie or tv show or whatever you want to gif, open whichever screencap software you’re using & start playing the video. for mplayer osx extended, to screencap you just go to the scene you want to gif, pause the video, & hold down shift + command + S on mac (i think it’s the same for windows i’m not sure).

4. importing screenshots into photoshop

now that you’ve got the screencaps of the scene you want to gif, it’s time to open photoshop! to upload the screencaps, in photoshop go up in the lefthand corner to file > scripts > load files into stack. once you click on that, you’ll click ‘browse’ over to the right & the files on your computer will pop up. go to wherever you saved your screenshots & select all of them! once you’re done selecting them, hit ‘open’ in the bottom right corner.

5. cropping

now all of your screencaps are imported!!! now it’s time to crop the screencaps. go to the crop icon over to the left.

for this gif, i want dimensions to be 540 x 350, so i go up top & type it in

great! now the gif will look like this:

6. actions/sharpening/gaussian blur

now that the gif is cropped, we’re going to sharpen it. i use actions because they are so much faster & easier. i use the action that kylos uses in her giffing tutorial & the direct link to download the action is right here! to access actions, you can either go to window > actions or go over to the play button to the right that looks like this:

when you hit that play button, you will see the actions that you have downloaded pop up! select where it says ‘select here!’ & then go down to the play button at the bottom to play the action. i circled both steps down below

the default radius in this action is 0.3 & i normally change it to 0.4 (it’ll normally pop up & ask you like shown below & just change it to 0.4!)

now the action has been played!! i add an extra step but it’s optional! what i do next is i add a layer of gaussian blur on top of the action. to do that, go to filter > blur > gaussian blur. once you select that, it’ll have a pop up that looks like the one below & you’ll just select ok or hit the enter button

once you do that, you’ll notice your gif looks soft or not sharpened so the next step is to change the percentage of the gaussian blur layer you just applied. to do this, you go to the bottom right corner & hold down option by clicking on the gaussian blur layer. there will be options that pop up & you’ll select ‘edit smart filter blending options’ like shown below (my handwriting looks like a five-year-olds ik)

another pop up will show up in the middle of the screen & you’ll be able to select which percentage you want to place on your gif. the opacity really depends on the gif but i normally do 10%-30%. for a lot of my gifs recently i’ve applied 15% which is what i did on this gif! once you change the opacity to whatever you want, hit ok!

after that you want to change the image size to the same size you cropped the gif to. to do this, you’ll go to image > image size > & change it to 540 x 350 (or whatever the size of your gif is! also make sure it’s switched to pixels instead of inches! once you’ve done that hit ‘ok’ or press enter.

once that’s done, go ahead & save the gif! to do this, go to file > export > save for web (legacy). it’ll show you the size of the gif down in the bottom left & as long as it’s under 10mb you’ll be fine!!! down below i circled my save settings as well! also its SUPER IMPORTANT THAT YOU SET LOOPING OPTIONS TO FOREVER! once you’ve done all that, save your gif by hitting the ‘save...’ button down below that’s circled. you can name your gif however you like just make sure you keep the .gif after it!

now my gif looks sharper than before:

now for time delay & coloring!!!

7. time delay

open the gif you just saved in photoshop by going to file > open. once it’s opened, you’ll see a timeline of all the frames towards the bottom. it’ll likely say 0.07 sec with a small little downward arrow next to it. select the downward arrow & select other. change the speed from ‘0.07′ to ‘0.05′! gifs look much better & more natural at this speed. (also yes i did delete a few frames because i felt it was too long so to delete frames you just select the ones you want to delete & click the trash button down by the scroller!)

8. coloring

coloring can be so much fun but so tricky! i personally use a base psd that i made for all of my gifs & then adjust it according to the gif i’m coloring but for this gif i colored it from scratch! so for most of my gifs i only color/edit them using levels, selective color, brightness/contrast, curves, color balance, & vibrance (in that order) to access these, go to layer > new adjustment layer > & then select whichever one you want to start with.

MANTIS SHRIMP FUN FACTS

So, there’s a lot of Mantis Shrimp (aka Prawn Killer aka Thumbsplitter aka Sea Locust aka Stomatopod) facts running around, like “they punch with the force of a .22!!! They punch so hard they make a bang that’s hotter than the sun!! They can see colors we can’t!!

And while a lot of them are true in an abstract sense or kinda true, a lot of the times they’re not very helpful. Like “punch with the force of a .22?” what does that even MEAN? So i’m here today, after a wikipedia deep dive about physics of all fucking things and mantis shrimps in order to bring you MANTIS SHRIMP TRIVIA IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Let’s start with their eyes!

Look at those peepers!!!

Mantis Shrimps have some of the weirdest and possibly THE most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, giving them 360 trinocular vision. Just meaning they can swivel their eyes to look all around them (each one individually! they can see two directions!) and each eye has three parts that take in visual info on the world around them, with each band of their eyes processing different shit, giving them fun things like depth perception! Which, yeah i know isn’t a big deal to you all, but it is for a crustacean so hush.

Now they can’t actually see colors we can’t, in fact they’re actually not very good at distinguishing light wavelengths that are very close to each other. What they CAN do with their 12-16 color receptors though, is some super cool shit.

First, a lot of the information their eyes receive is processed directly in the eyes before it gets to the brain, letting them basically have to think less and see and react to their environment very quickly. Their range is also wider than ours, being able to perceive anything from the far end of ultraviolet up to red. We're pretty sure they can’t perceive infra-red, but scientists are still studying their big ol nerd eyes so who knows? They can also see polarized light

What the Hell is polarized light? I’ve been reading physics shit all day and if there’s an easily understandable way to put it, the entire internet apparently just elects not to. I could bang on about electromagnetic wavelengths and oscillation and shit, but i’m not gonna. Here, if you’re interested. I know lasers constitute polarized light, and i know that these guys have a structure in their eyes called a waveplate that is better at polarizing light than anything we have ever made artificially, and they’re studying it for improving blu-ray discs. Also, they can apparently use the way polarized light bounces off tissues to see neuron activity and cancer. Who knew.

Also some species can do spectral tuning, which is basically adjusting the color sensitivity of their eyes to best suit their environment. NEAT!

But let’s get to what you all really wanna read about:

THAT LEFT HOOK

Now, there are actually two types of Mantis Shrimp: Spearers and Smashers. They both have raptorial appendages that shoot out really fucking fast, the difference being....i mean take a fucking guess.

We’re focusing here on Smashers and the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, which is what you usually think of when you hear the word, but it is worth noting there are like 450 different species of the lil buggers that widely vary in size and appearance. So yeah.

Here’s a lil love for the Spearers tho

Now, to address those points i made up at the top. The Mantis Shrimp punches up to 50 miles per hour with a force of 1500 newtons. 1500 newtons being around 340 pounds of force. So, you know. Put a piece of gravel on top of a crab, then have the nearest NFL linebacker jump onto that piece of gravel, and that’s about how hard this lil guy’s decking his prey. And anyone else who tests him.

The .22 caliber bullet thing comes from the ACCELERATION of the shrimpy’s lil clubs, which is the rate they go from zero to that 50 miles per hour. Now they go from 0 to 50 in a teeny tiny fraction of a second, accelerating their lil fists at about 335,000 feet per second which is, you guessed it, about the same as the acceleration of a bullet leaving the chamber of a .22.

Needless to say, 340 pounds of force in a tiny little appendage hitting you that fast is bad for your health, and it can punch off crab legs, split shells, give you a really nasty gash if you’re the kind of dumbass that likes to pick up wild animals, shatter aquarium glass, and oh yeah break reality a little tiny bit.

Yeah, so the surface of the sun thing.

Unfortunately, it’s time for another physics lesson, but i did all the dry-ass reading and over-simplified it so you don’t have to! Okay, crash course in cavitation.

So, you know how every element has a liquid, gas, and solid state? Well which one it is doesn’t just depend on temperature, it also depends on pressure. Which is why you’ll get planets with bizarre shit like oceans of liquid diamond in the mantle of Uranus. Extreme temperatures and extreme pressures both make elements go whacky.

Anyway, cavitation is just exactly the same thing as boiling, except it’s not happening because the water’s getting hot, it’s happening because the pressure’s suddenly been lowered.

But just like boiling, it makes little vapor-filled bubbles. Now the Mantis Shrimp hits prey so hard and so fucking fast, that when it pulls its raptorial appendage back, it takes the water a second to get up to speed on what the living fuck just happened, which creates a cavitation bubble in the water between the club and whatever poor bastard it just hit. Then that instantly collapses with a little bang, a flash, and a fucking shockwave that basically kicks its prey when it’s down.

And yes, because extremely low pressure, as we’ve established, makes shit go all whacky, the vapor inside can be up to several thousand Kelvin, which is around as hot or hotter than the surface of the sun.

But again, this burst of energy, while huge, is confined to a little teeny tiny bubble that collapses in less than a millisecond, like this shit can’t be seen with the naked eye, and the energy very rapidly disperses to the water around it.

But for that fraction of a second....in that little tiny space in the shallows of the Pacific....every time a Mantis Shrimp murks its prey...it literally just hit a guy so fucking hard that it went all Superboy Prime and broke reality.

And yes, in case you’re wondering, they would make terrible fucking pets because while they may be pretty and very cool, they are INCREDIBLY territorial, are not smart enough to recognize their reflections, and more than one dipshit’s fish tank has been broken because a Mantis Shrimp tried to throw hands with its own reflection

Like Narcissus but really fucking aggro.

KEIKO Interview with 「HYPER JAPAN」 in English

After years singing with the popular female vocal unit Kalafina, famous around the world for the themes to anime blockbusters such as Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero, KEIKO is releasing her debut album!

Her versatile voice and distinct timbre means that this album ranges from soaring pop numbers to soft ballads, to everything in between. With production from acclaimed producers Yoda and Yuki Kajiura, this is an album that touches your heart as soon as it touches your ears.

We caught up with KEIKO to ask about her 2020 debut album and how she feels about the future!

You were with Kalafina for a long time – how is it different to create and perform as a solo artist? I’ve been creating songs in collaboration with my producer Yoda, talking about music I’d like to song or artists I’d like to work with. I’ve only just begun so everything is brand new for me. I’m really excited to try new things. So far I have only done two solo live shows, but I was singing with my musicians like it was a jam session. I just felt the music in the moment. It’s the same as when I was with Kalafina, I just love making music with other people.

It must have been difficult to release your debut solo single in the middle of a pandemic, did that change how you produce or promote your music? I try to be flexible and adapt to the situation and stay optimistic about the future, and that attitude hasn’t changed. We still have a good time while working. We laugh and smile a lot. That’s really important because I believe that when you smile, you encourage other people to smile and it creates a real connection.

How does it feel to livestream your concerts with a limited audience instead of performing to a full live audience? I knew that livestream concerts had their own good points, but when I actually got a chance to do one, seeing all the fan comments and conversations in real-time, I really appreciated this new way for people to connect and enjoy a live performance. It’s so exciting to be able to directly receive everyone’s messages.I share my heart with my singing voice, so it was really heartwarming to see my fans sharing their feelings about my performance with their comments.What’s more, I’m so grateful to my fans who allow me to keep creating music and performing live concerts during this coronavirus crisis. It’s very different to perform with and without an audience. Even if there is only one person in the audience, that will motivate me to perform. I even felt that way when I was an amateur busking on the street. Because of that, the last two live shows have had a huge, huge influence on my music and my performance! It fired up my imagination and now I’m motivated to do even more. I want to put all this new energy into music, and I want to share this music and these songs with the world. Nothing would make me happier than continuing along this path.

Please tell us how you came up with your new album Lantana and which songs are the most special to you. We started making this album by searching for music that KEIKO would like to try singing, along with my producer Yoda and my record label. At that point, we were looking for music and feelings that I wanted to convey, and songs that I felt like I wanted to sing after being with Kalafina for 10 years. It’s difficult to choose a single song that means the most to me but the song “nanairo no finale” is very special to me. It was composed by Yuki Kajiura who I have wanted to work with since before I was in Kalafina, and when this song was recorded, I was so happy that it was going to be a big part of the beginning of my solo career.

Which singers/artists have inspired you to create music? I would say Yutaka Ozaki, Yuki Kajiura, and MISIA.

As a part of Kalafina you recorded lots of anime title songs, do you have a favourite anisong or a show which you would love to record a theme song for? I like historical shows, so I’d like to sing the theme for something like Kingdom or The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

There are so many different types of song on your new album, from pop to jazz to ballad to showtunes, did you enjoy experimenting with different styles? Are there any styles that you want to try in the future? We had such a great time making this album. Even when we were frustrated it was lots of fun. I think that after this, whenever I am wondering about what sort of songs to sing, I’m always going to look for a new challenge or something I haven’t done before.

Do you have any plans for new music or concerts in 2021? I’m releasing the DVD and Blu-ray of my December 16th ZeppDiverCityTOKYO live show “KEIKO Live K002 ** Lantana ** has bloomed **”. You can purchase it from the 10th of March. We also plan to include extra live audio as a bonus for the live DVD and Blu-ray. For details about other shows and events in the future, please see the official KEIKO website. In 2021 I want to continue to spread joy with my music, live performances. There are moments in life that conjure up intense emotion any time you think about them. Happy or sad, whenever your mind flicks through its rolodex of memories and lands on it, you feel that moment come to life. You brain must have logged every detail of that time and packed it away in the back of your brain for you to stumble upon later down the road. Your mind takes you back to that moment and brings your senses along with it. My mother always reaches for these moments in times of strife, dipping her hand into a lucky dip of ‘happy places’ and allowing the sensation to wash over her. Her favourite is a family holiday to Spain, sipping ice-cold drinks as we swung our legs in the chilly waters of the pool below us.

Not all the moments I remember are so positive, but I feel them just as strongly. Instead, I created my own ‘happy place’ to escape to whenever I felt overwhelmed.

I stand, waist-deep, in warm water. Waves lap around me, hugging and kissing my naked skin as I breathe gently under the moonlight. The sky above me is clear and an audience of stars shine down on me. I bare my soul to the universe and feel love and appreciation in return. The night sky watches over me as I let my eyes close, leaning my head back, chin high. My shoulders relax more than they ever have as a warm but refreshing breeze wraps around me, hugging me tightly. I hear trees rustle somewhere behind me, whispering sweet sentences to one another as the sand beneath my feet reaches my ankles, anchoring me securely to the world, grounding and protecting me from floating away.

I let my eyes open and I am back in my kitchen. No gentle breezes or salty air. Just my kitchen, with its colourful, mismatching crockery and photographs blu-tacked to the wall. However, there is a clear change in the room since the time I shut my eyes tightly, my chest feels looser, my throat no longer feels as though it is closing, and my breathing has slowed drastically.

Raising my phone from my side, I return to the source of my sudden panic.

A news article, forwarded from my manager, Jim, a simple ‘Didn’t know you were dating’ preceded the link to the website. Of course, he was joking, not realising the stress I was about to feel.

Quickly clicking the link, I remind myself to breathe deep and slow as I am redirected to a webpage.

BACK ON THE HORSE? HARRY STYLES SPOTTED GETTING CLOSE WITH MYSTERY WOMAN

Hunky heartthrob, Harry Styles, caught canoodling outside hot Los Angeles restaurant, Spago. Despite reportedly having only split with model ex-girlfriend, Camille Rowe, a mere two months ago, the pop sensation was witnessed cosying up to a new woman.

I am skim-reading at this point, desperate to get to the end with some shred of mental stability. My eyes land on the articles singular piece of ‘evidence’, a video taken from across the street. It begins with Harry and I talking and laughing outside the restaurant, follows us as we migrate closer to one another, my head thrown back in laughter before we are nearly pressed together. I had not realised quite how close we had gotten. The video ends when Harry and I are blocked from view, Harry’s car obstructing the camera’s line of sight. No one would be able to tell we did not kiss. My stomach squeezes uncomfortably as I read the video’s caption.

Keep it in your pants guys!

It is all a little dramatic. A small part of me wants to laugh at the way this has all been exaggerated and made into a big deal. That amusement fizzles as I continue to read the article, pausing after reading the final line.

All this has us wondering, has Harry really moved on so quickly?

Good question.

Quickly replying to my manager, I send the words ‘Blind date’, before glancing at the comments beneath the article.

Big mistake.

Despite the article not naming me directly, not something I am shocked or offended by as Harry is clearly the more famous of the two of us, the comment section of the webpage has not mirrored the same unawareness. Almost every comment mentions me by name, the majority questioning how we even know each other.

I allow myself to be sucked into the vortex of curiosity, taking in every opinion possible. Many of the replies to the news make it clear that they do not know who I am, and therefore that is reason enough for me to be nowhere near Harry. A lot of comments debate whether or not Harry has fully dealt with his breakup, suggesting that this was a PR move to make his ex-girlfriend jealous. I make the mistake of googling her.

Well I don’t think the jealousy tactic is likely to be effective.

She is stunning. A French model. Could I be more of a cliched parallel to her? I try not to compare the two of us, however, a few comments bring attention to the bloat of my stomach and it becomes very difficult not to feel vulnerable after that. It was a blind date. Harry and I were set up. That is the only reason he would ever look at me twice.

But he wants to see me again.

I cling to that thought and close the webpage on my phone, pocketing it and deciding fresh air is what I need. Stepping through the patio doors of my house, I peek out into the sunshine, letting the warm rays soak into me instantly. The small house is built on a hill, the garden demonstrating this the most as it is split into two grassy tiers. I walk up the concrete steps until I reach the patio furniture at the top. Sitting myself on one of the wooden chairs, I take a second to appreciate the view; the back of my house shaded by the incline of the hill which allows me to peer over the top of my roof and look out at the hills. As a kid, I had pictured living somewhere warm enough for palm trees, now I am able to watch them arc in the wind.

I did this, and this is far more important than a few words. I am alive, I am good, and I am kind.

Pressing my toes into the soft, cool grass beneath me, I slip my phone out of my pocket and compose a text.

Sat in my garden and I reckon the view would be fun to paint, fancy it?

The soft yellowy horizon gives me a sense of security as the evening creeps in. There is so much beauty in the world and I am glad I took the time to sit out here rather than obsessing over some meaningless gossip. It will all blow over and people will either forget about us or realise that we are not actually together. A small smirk tugs at my lips as I imagine pinning this on Lucy and using it as an excuse to get a free drink out of her.

My phone vibrates twice against the wooden table.

I love that idea. Tomorrow work? (I’ll bring wine) – Harry

I cannot help but grin at the small screen, quickly typing a reply.

4pm? Catch the last of the sun that way. Also you don’t have to keep signing off!

Only a few seconds after placing my phone back down on the table, I have to pick it back up to read his latest message.

Sounds perfect. It’s harder to stop than you’d think – Harry

Giggling at him, I lock my phone and set it down, excitement pooling in the bottom of my stomach. This time tomorrow Harry will be sat beside me, paint-covered and maybe a little bit tipsy. I make a quick mental note to go shopping for food to line our stomachs, not wanting to let him be exposed to my drunken self just yet.

I spend the next day getting my house presentable, or at least as tidy as possible despite the numerous large, brown boxes which clutter my living room. I also spend the day doing errands, shopping for food and drinks Harry might like (probably going a bit overboard and buying enough options for five people rather than two), and picking up some art supplies for the two of us.

Once home, I unpack the groceries, setting some of them out on plates and dishes, making an attempt at a charcuterie board I had seen on Pinterest the night before. Setting up the area we would be spending the most time in, I move the two small canvases I purchased earlier outside, along with paints and brushes and cups of water for rinsing. It seems a little bit amateur, but I do not have time to dwell as Harry texts me that he is just leaving his house and will be here in half an hour.

Dashing back inside, I take the speediest shower of my life just to freshen up and rinse the day away. Chastising myself for my lack of planning ahead, I smear on a touch of makeup and quickly style my hair. I am still pulling on a pair of dungarees, clipping the straps into place, when I open the front door.

“Hi,” I greet breathlessly.

Harry is already smiling when I meet his gaze, looking down at me with an infectious grin. I allow myself a second to drink him in. Obviously, he is dressed more casually than two days ago, dressed in a simple but figure-hugging black t-shirt, a golden chain peeking out from underneath. Alongside them, he is wearing a pair of brown, straight-leg corduroy trousers. He looks good. It should not surprise me, but it does anyway.

“Hi,” he offers brightly.

Stepping aside to let him enter, I try not to check him out, mentally telling myself that I am still not certain where he stands re us kissing each other’s faces off. Probably for the best to err on the side of caution.

Closing the door behind him, I walk us through the living room and to the adjoining kitchen, feeling a tad embarrassed by my decorating style. Splashes of colour litter the house, the walls are mostly covered in photographs, interesting drawings and potted plants.

“When did you move in?” Harry asks, noticing the stack of boxes. My heart pangs slightly at the question but I try not to let the dread within shine through.

“Few months now, I’m just terrible at unpacking,” It is not a total lie, so I do not feel totally bad about it. There is, however, a small part of me that resents not being completely honest with him about why a certain box remains closed and sealed. “I might have gone overboard with snacks, so please eat anything you want,” I tell him when we reach the kitchen and he sees the spread I had laid out.

Suddenly, it all feels like too much and heat prickles my cheeks in embarrassment as I watch Harry eye the full countertops. I had bought far too much and probably seem incredibly eager. Bread touched three types of meat, touched three types of cheese, touched olives, touched sundried tomatoes. There was another plate full of fruit, washed and sliced and displayed daintily in concentric circles. Then there was the bags of crisps, pretzels, biscuits, and chocolate buttons. This was enough for a family picnic, not a light grazing, and definitely too much for a second date. If that is even what I could call this.

“This is amazing,” Harry utters quietly, and I almost do not hear him, my internal monologue reprimanding me so severely it almost overpowers him. He turns back towards me, gazing at me softly, his face a beautiful light pink. “Feel bad for contributing so little now,” he says, a gentle teasing lilt to his voice which makes me smile, a breathy and grateful laugh falling from my lips.

“Trust me, your contribution is the most valuable,” I say, stretching up into a cupboard to grab two wine glasses.

We manage to carry a disproportionate amount of food outside, giggling as we stacked our arms high until I could barely see over the top of my pile. Once outside, we settle on the wooden chairs and Harry pours us each a glass of merlot.

“Matches your hair,” he muses, smirking as he hands the glass to me.

“Never heard that one before,” I tease, trying to ignore the voice in my head questioning if he thinks the colour is ugly.

Harry settles back in his chair, looking out across the hills and valleys before speaking again, “This was a good idea,”

“Yeah, the view is the main reason I bought the house to be honest,” I mumble into my wine glass.

There are a few moments of silence. It is not particularly uncomfortable, but I decide that we could use some music. I dash inside to grab a speaker and connect my phone to it.

“Can I leave it up to you?” I ask, holding out my unlocked phone for him to take, “I’m indecisive.”

He lets out a chuckle, muttering a soft, “Sure.”

Taking the phone from my hand, our fingers brush momentarily, and I have to remind myself that I am not in the middle of a romcom. I feel my cheeks redden at the interaction and quickly turn to my canvas. Placing the wooden end of my paintbrush in my mouth as I scan over the paints in between the two of us. The soft opening notes of The Chain begin to play, mingling with the warm breeze that swirls lightly around the garden.

“Listen to the wind blow,” I sing under my breath, unable to hold myself back.

From the corner of my eye, I see Harry picking up his own brush, dipping into a little bit of blue paint and brushing across his own canvas. I dip my brush back into the yellowy orange colour I had been mixing and paint the outline of my house. It is messy and a little childlike, but I am having a good time. Harry and I both begin to relax as we paint, singing along, and doing embarrassingly enthusiastic seated dance moves when the guitar solo plays.

“I love Fleetwood Mac so so much,” I admit gleefully, catching my breath as I giggle and take a sip of my wine.

“Me too,” Harry replies, a bright smile pairing with beautifully pinkened cheeks.

“What’s your favourite song?” I ask happily, popping a raspberry into my mouth.

Harry pauses for a moment, lowering his brush and giving the question some good thought. He makes it impossible not to admire him, watching as his brows furrow ever so slightly, lips puckering temporarily as his brain ticks over.

“I always come back to Songbird,” he tells me, looking up at me and nodding to himself. His eyes look so bright when they catch the light, reflecting into mine. I almost have to look away.

“It’s a beautiful song,” I admit softly, my voice quieter than either of us had expected, suddenly nervous again to be in his presence and having a conversation which means so much to me.

“What’s yours?” Harry asks, his gaze not wavering for even a second. He is undeniably intimidating, not even due to his status in the world, but simply being beside him feels as though I have won some sort of contest. There is something in his general being that makes me feel both small and powerful all at once. Simultaneously, I cannot believe that he is here in my garden when he could be anywhere else with anyone else, nor can I believe the way he is looking at me, observing me with such delicate looks that it appears he is afraid of scaring me away.

“Storms,” I blurt out. Taking a second to collect my thoughts, I explain, “Skies the Limit is my go-to, but Storms made me feel when I felt numb.”

Realising that I have most definitely overshared, I quickly dip my brush in the nearest colour and spread it across the top of my canvas, accidentally painting the sky pink.

“I think that’s really special,” Harry utters softly, his gaze still on me as I pretend to be focused on my painting and not the spectacular man beside me, or the way his eyes feel on the side of my face. “I want to make music like that, you know?” he says, turning back to the view ahead of us and finishing off his own skyline.

“I think you have,” I confess, feeling his eyes back on me in an instant. I force myself to turn to meet his gaze, urging some sense of bravery to course through my veins. When our eyes meet, he is looking at me like water in the desert, some sort of miracle before him that his brain does not fully believe. His mouth opens, pauses, then closes again. A second later, a smile pulls at his lips.

“I like your pink sky,” he tells me, grinning brightly, not breaking away to look at the canvas in front of me.

I laugh, “Started as a mistake but I think I prefer it like this,” I admit, pursing my lips as I take a long look at my painting.

“I like the way your mind works,” Harry says, smirking when I turn to him with knitted eyebrows, “I feel like you’re so bright and full of joy. Just walking through your house felt like I’ve known you years… I don’t know if that sounds mental.”

He looks at me cautiously, afraid he has revealed too much, and maybe he has, but I enjoy it more than I could even tell him. I like his perception of me. No matter what happens, how much he comes to learn and dislike about me, at this moment he likes me. And, oh boy, do I like him.

The thought of kissing him pops into my head, bold and illuminated in neon. I let it pass, determined not to ruin the moment. Instead, I look at him, and he looks right back. We share a brief period of peace, the sun on our faces with a light wind blowing between us.

“Oh!” We both exclaim enthusiastically as What Makes You Think You’re the One plays on the shuffle. Smirking at our joint reaction, we turn back to our paintings.

For the next hour or so we fully relax into our little world, grooving along as we paint. There is a real sense of calm throughout the space, even the birds in the trees seem to chirp softer, almost as though they were part of our garden party.

The only moment in which there is a break in the bubble of tranquillity is when Harry desperately reaches for a strawberry, stopping himself whenever his hand, covered in a rainbow of paints, gets close. Impossible to tear my eyes away, I watch him for a moment, a delicate smirk on my lips as he attempts to approach the task from a multitude of angles. He lets out a small sigh and I decide that it is my duty to intervene.

“Need a hand there?” I ask, failing to hold back a giggle as I pluck a strawberry from the plate with paint-free fingers.

“Thanks. Can you-- You could… Thanks,” Harry stammers while I hesitate as I raise the fruit to his face, temporarily feeling awkward about feeding a man I barely know.

I quickly get over myself and lift the berry to his lips, already somewhat parted. Taking the fruit into his mouth whole, his lips graze my fingertips ever so lightly. Our eyes lock the second it happens.

Things start to move slowly. My hand lowers into my lap. Harry chews the fruit and swallows, his tongue poking out to catch a stray bead of juice that had escaped from his lips to the corner of his mouth.

No way are you letting yourself be turned on by this. So cliché.

Despite the mental chastisement, I find myself drawn to Harry. The need to feel his lips on my own is overwhelming me. Every second spent not knowing whether he is a good kisser feels like torture, my mind in agony.

It appears that he feels the same way, gaze hesitating over my parted lips, hopefully not focusing on my clear breathlessness. Our bodies seem to be migrating towards one another, some unknown gravitational pull guiding our chests together until out faces are almost touching. I feel his breath on my cheek and quickly I worry that mine does not smell as good.

Why did you eat that slice of manchego?

Surely, he won’t want to kiss me anymore. He must not have noticed yet. But he will, and I will be humiliated. Better to stop now, while for some reason he actually is not appalled by the thought of kissing you. Why does he want to kiss me anyway? He could kiss anyone he wanted. He could have anyone he wanted. It is probably the wine.

The wine has probably stained your teeth as well. God you’re a mess.

I stop dead in my tracks. Swiftly, I pull away from him. It is harder than I had expected, his cologne sucking me in so that it feels like I have to stop breathing in order to separate from him.

“Sorry,” I mumble.

I cannot look at him. Unable to face the reality of the situation and see his bemused, beautiful face. I would only want to kiss him if I did look up at him, so instead I fidget with the hem of my sleeve, nails picking away at the firm stitching.

“I’m sorry,” Harry says, his voice is so quiet that it hurts my heart to hear him so small and dejected, especially since I was the cause.

We sit in silence for what feels like an eternity. I can feel his gaze on me, soft and apologetic, but I am still unable to bring myself to make eye contact.

“I’d be happy just being your friend,” I tell him.

It is a lie. Partially, anyway. Of course, I would love to be his friend, but I also want to kiss him all over and have heart-to-hearts in the early hours of the morning. I want to hear about his first kiss, find out his favourite sweets and his happy place. I wonder if he is there now, desperately trying to escape the awkward bubble of tension surrounding us.

“Yeah, I shouldn’t have assumed… I’m sorry.” Is all he says.

“No,” I pipe up, a well of guilt forming in my stomach as I regard his sunken features, “It’s not you...”

“It’s not you, it’s me?” Harry says with a quirk of a smile.

I let out a breathy chuckle and we finally meet each other’s eyes and understand. It’s all alright.

We keep painting. By the time the sun starts to set and the water for our brushes turns a murky grey, I have finished mine and sit teasing Harry as he adds the finishing touches to his own.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” Harry counters with a grin as he adds a sweep of dark red to his canvas.

“Better be some painting,” I mutter into my wine glass.

“Okay!” Harry exclaims excitedly, “She’s done. Ready for the reveal?”

“Yes,” I laugh at his question, as if I have not been waiting to share for twenty minutes.

Harry had insisted that our final products should be a surprise for the other, so for the last hour we painted in secrecy, occasionally peering out from behind our canvases to try and sneak a peek at the other’s.

When we angle our paintings towards one another, the difference in our styles is clear. Mine is bright with exaggerated shapes, almost cartoonish. Meanwhile Harry’s painting is more true to life, a meta portrayal of the view, two little figures of him and me seen from behind at the bottom of the canvas.

“I love it,” I tell him, the picture bringing a grin to my face as I observed the tiny version of myself; a little blob of shoulders and messy hair.

“I’m calling it ‘Friendzone’.” he tells me, a wicked smirk on his lips.

“Hey!” I whine with a gently nudge to his arm, however, the bout of laughter he has elicited really weakens my protest.

Harry helps me clear up the garden before he leaves, carefully carrying his precious painting out with him. After bidding me a sweet goodnight, leaving no doubt in my mind that he had a nice time today, I finish cleaning up. As I am washing the two wine glasses, I peer over at my painting, smiling as I remembered Harry’s comments about my pink sky. Maybe being just his friend would be easy after all.
