Hi! I really like your art and blog, and I noticed that you apparently have been running commission on-and-off for at least a little while, and I was wondering if you had any tips on running art commissions? Any good guidelines, how to get more visibility, etc.

I know it's not really a reliable thing, but I'm in a bad situation health-wise and could really use the money, so any advice you might be willing to share about how to do it better would be much appreciated.

Well for one you have to figure that most people don't have money to spend on commissions; I certainly don't and commissions are more of a luxury thing to buy considering they're relatively expensive and take a long time, so don't be too discouraged if you don't see much business. I get less commissions around the holidays considering people are buying more important things around that time. I have consistent severe health problems too, and that's the main reason I struggle for money lmao, so I understand.

I've been doing commissions I think for two-three years now? and Im still not sure how is the best way to go about it LMAO my bad. I'd just say

-When you post an artwork, just simply put 'commissions open' at the bottom of the caption, so people are aware you do commissions

-I keep a commission post regularly circulated on my blog and personal side blog. not reblogged day or something so I don't annoy my mutuals (or worse, make them feel bad for not being able to support; I've had to unfollow someone because I felt bad not being able to help after they rbed their commissions page 24/7 and I felt bad fjjsjf selfish I know, but. y'know.)

-I mention it in my bio for instagram, discord, twitter, anything I use.

-When you finish a commission, ask if they're ok with you posting it.

-Start at the lowest possible price, and as interest grows, and your skill grows, raise the price just a bit every so often (I used to charge $20 for commissions, but since my process is now taking me 3-6 hours or more to complete a commission, I raised it to at *least* $40-$90

-Always be friendly and considerate (Im sure you are but. genuinely it goes a long long way)

-Give regular updates (I'm bad about this one because I start multiple projects and work on like. 7 things at a time. God bless people who are so so patient with me). Ask if they're happy with the process every step of the way, and make changes where needed (within reason).

-Always keep them in the loop of you have a major life thing going on that might slow down progress, or admit when there's been a goof on your end. I personally appreciate it when someone keeps me updated, so I try to update others as well >_<

-Just be honest, friendly, and people will know you're reliable. Keep it chill and not desperate, and you'll see business

-I recommend a page on Trello to keep your info organized! I use that for commission rules/guidelines

-Only advertise work you enjoy making. You do not want to get stuck painting if you hate painting! Nothing is worse than being on a time crunch and not even enjoying the process you have to finish

That's about all I have honestly, I just post commission work constantly as my weekly posting and it's been 1. good for growing my skill in the past year because I have to draw 2. people know me for character commissions at a certain point because I post them a lot. 1. How many works do you have on A03?

At the moment, 24, but I have more posted to my Tumblr than I do a03. I prefer it here (although the audience is smaller)

2. What's your total A03 word count?

Kind of an odd question. 479,942. I guess this is supposed to be flexing? But I really do feel like it's not the quantity that matters, it's the quality.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

In the past, many. (I didn't write for all of em but here's some of my previous fandoms) Currently I write for Pokemon.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

For complete fics, the top spots belong to some Owl House fics, the next is a short Breath of the Wild Sidlink fic, the next is my Legault/Heath Fire Emblem story, and then a compilation of Moomin stories for a Snufmin Week.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes. In my FF.net days, the norm seemed to be not to respond to comments. But these days, responding to comments seems to be the new norm. Besides, it's nice to thank people for taking the time out of their day to comment and for being such lovely human beings. Even if it IS really hard for me to think of how to thank them without sounding like a buffoooooon (I take a while to get around to it sometimes argh)

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I have never done that. I want hopeful stories because they give me hope. I think the world needs more of that right now.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

How do you even judge that? Sorry I gotta skip this one, I have no clue

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Very rarely. In Owl House fandom, there are two characters who are not biologically related, did not grow up together, do not share a parental figure, and are not familial in any capacity. However, because a large number of fans have decided they have a "sibling vibe," they've concluded that shipping them together is vile and anyone who does so should be witch-hunted, harassed, slandered, doxxed, and worse. So, I got hate for that occasionally! That's about it, though.

9. Do you write smut?

I did once. Never again, lol

10. Do you write crossovers?

I wrote a Moomin/Deltarune crossover for a while. Nobody read it, though. A shame, it was fun.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Why would you steal a fic? Well, it's the internet, I guess you see just about everything online eventually, but I've never even heard of that. Art theft? Sure. Usually so the person can scam folks into commissioning them. Fic theft though? Nope. That's a new one for me. This is not an invitation for folks to try it out, lol

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Somebody asked me permission once to do that! I told them yes. I never heard back from them though.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

A lifetime ago I did a round-robin fic with my friends. I don't think I could co-write a fic now though, honestly. I'm so very picky about my headcanons. I would be horrible to work with.

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

Man, that's tough. I guess probably Mulder/Scully (see question 19) just because it was my first ship and left such an impression on me.

15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

'Second Chances.' It was such a cute story and so FUN. People loved it too. And I had it all planned out. But I left Owl House fandom before completing it. I never will return to it, I am too bitter with the final season of the show and the mainstream fans are also very tiresome to deal with.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Hmm. I'm getting to be pretty good at outlining things and figuring out the story's structure. tbh ~90% of my story is often done before I even start my first draft, either due to the vivid daydreams I have, trying stuff out and then trying different things out in my head (& the notes I take on said daydreams) or the progressively more specific outlines as I work things out. That said, there's definitely still stuff that simply does not work on paper that seemed so good in your head. And there's a lot of magic that just seems to spontaneously happen while writing the actual draft out, and it's so important to stay open to that. Whoops I am rambling. I guess in summary my strength is finding a satisfying ratio of outlining stuff vs. staying open to ideas and letting the story lead me in the direction it wants to go.

Also I think I'm pretty good at dialogue. Action/scene description is harder for me, but dialogue feels easy.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

My ideas tend to be very Big. I have great difficulty writing shorter stories. This sucks because I do not have limitless time and energy and I can sometimes bite off more than I can chew. I would love to write shorter stories so I can try out a larger number of ideas. I also want to improve my prose, I need some more variety in there, imo.

My primary weakness, though, is I only write as a form of escapism when I feel depressed. I want a healthier relationship with my writing and with fandom. Basically, I need to learn how to do things casually, to not let an interest consume me completely. I'll let you know if I figure out how to do that, no luck so far.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I'm a boring monolingual. I'm not going to write in another language unless I know at least a little about it. Toss in a few phrases or sentences, sure, but nothing more than that.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

The X-Files. I was a Mulder/Scully shipper. We called it MSR back then, MulderScullyRomance. I was a young lass back then, and it was my induction to shipping and romance. I loved them because they had fantastic chemistry and a strong partnership built on trust and mutual respect, despite their differing worldviews and interests. Also because I really really liked Scully.

20. Favorite fic you've ever written?

Hmmmmm. Tough to choose. I really like "Acquired Taste" because it was the first really long fan fiction I wrote and finished. (At least, I think? I had a long Stargate fic back in the day but we don't speak of that) And I wrote it after a really long break from writing fic (years and years). It has a very special place in my heart.

Is it my best work, though? Mmm. Not sure. I'm also pretty fond of "Ships That Pass in the Night," my longest work. I put my heart and soul into it and got so many comments/interactions, and it has a lot of happy memories.

I also really like some super short stories of mine, though. This one is 613 words long but I feel like it says everything my longer stories on Julinemo do. I also loved writing Support Conversations for Fire Emblem which force you to tell as much as you can in such an incredibly short format. (GBA-era Fire Emblem) I am so proud of those, they pushed me a lot as a writer.

I also like the fics I've done that are mostly genfic, because again, they involved trying something new. They tend to be my least popular 'cause ships reign supreme I guess. That's fine though, that's just the way fic writing goes.

7/27/24, early afternoon

Still no commissions. The well's pretty much dried up at this point I guess- last month I got one, and now zero, so I'm gonna be even more behind on setting aside money for taxes, and honestly I'm not confident I even have rent atm.

In other news, overnight oats were a mostly-success. I had checked on them last night and found that, even after some vigorous shaking in a mason jar, the protein powder had congealed into a sort of iceberg-like mass, and had formed sort of a gooey cocoon that housed the remained of the protein powder which remained bone-dry inside its shell. I broke it up with a fork and gave it another good shake though and that seemed to do the trick. This morning I found the oats had softened well, everything incorporated alright, and it had a good flavor- only issue was that it was a little soupy. I think 3/4 cup milk is too much, so I'm cutting it down to a half cup and seeing what happens with that. Also, in an attempt to circumvent the congealing issue with the protein powder, I'm blending the milk, protein powder, vanilla extract, and seasonings (cinnamon, nutmeg, touch of curry powder) together before adding them to the oats and chia seeds and shaking to saturate. Tomorrow morning, I'll add a dollop of pumpkin puree, a little maple syrup, and a pinch of salt and see what happens. Hopefully good things.

Workout-wise, last night I spent about 43 min on the treadmill to get the rest of my steps in (goal of 10k), estimating an average 100 steps a minute. Actually came out way over that, so that's cool. Sweated my ass off too. After that I foolishly chose to do some lateral shoulder raises with "light" weights to test the waters. Forearms held up fine, but my shoulders didn't- no pain, no injury, just got tired really fast, so I settled for doing three sets of 10 squats with a couple 10lb dumbbells and then called it a night.

I did a few knee push-ups to test the waters with my forearms. They still tingle ever so slightly, so I stopped and skipped push-ups today in favor of 3 sets of 20 crunches and 3 sets of 20 bicycle crunches, which I intend to add to my morning routine anyway. I think my forearms should be ready for weights again by tomorrow evening as long as I take it easy. I'll pop an ibuprofen later- oats also coincidentally help with inflammation.

Today for lunch (early dinner really- I slept poorly, woke up late, so the oats breakfast didn't really come up till like, almost noon) I'm doing a canned salmon and brown rice bowl with a little sriracha "mayo" sauce and furikake. The "mayo" is actually gonna be blended cottage cheese. I have no idea if it'll work, but we'll see. I may actually have to blend a little mayo or olive oil into it to try to get a decent consistency- this is going to be a learning process for me.

Tbh I see why folks say the hardest part of getting fit is the food- not so much restricting calories but more just how much I have to consume to get the adequate amount of protein I'm shooting for. It's supposed to be a gram per pound of bodyweight, but since I'm overweight I can dial that back a bit, so I'm doing .7 grams of protein at 195 pounds, which means I need about 136 grams of protein a day. Even if I divide that across 4 meals, that's still like 34 grams a meal. I'm generally a pretty light eater, so cramming that much food into my body feels like a tall order, but we'll see. I've got protein powder, cottage cheese, yogurt, milk, canned salmon, and edamame on-hand, so there are options. Thankfully at least the cottage cheese and salmon are really high in protein for how much volume they'll take up in my stomach.

Gonna go for a walk for a little bit to try to pre-empt my steps for the day, get some sun, and hopefully work up a bit of an appetite. Maybe I'll stop by the store and see if I can put a price to a rice bucket...

April was... okay.

Life stuff:

I've been to a lot of med appointments this month and now I'm able to start aqua therapy. Yay.

This month is my yearly mermaid convention. May 19-21 I will be in Sacramento. I'm pretty excited. Might post pics. I'll also need to take a week off afterward for recovery.

Visual Novel: I am now working on a visual novel. Working title: In the Forest of the Night. It is a horror/ dark romance game that will have multiple routes and multiple endings per route.

Plot: You wake in a rundown village surrounded by a thick, dark forest. You're informed that the forest is the only route to leaving, so you must enter. In it, you'll encounter strange and dangerous beings.

Romanceable characters: Nathaniel, a unicorn who takes human form; Father Bartholomew, a priest who preaches in a rundown chapel; The Tiger, the fey king of the forest; Hanzo, a weasel-fey who knows the ins-and-outs of the forest better than anyone; and Dr. Lev Petrov, a botanist who has been lost in the forest for decades.

I'm working on my art skills, but we'll see if I get there. I'm also recruiting artists and people who know coding to help.

It was a clear cut break up. You heard childe talk on about a future with you, a kid, maybe 2, a nice house in sneznhneya. And you wanted that to, you did less and less commission and saved up enough money for hopefully the beginning of that dream to happen, but when you finally voiced the idea becoming reality, he laughed.

He fucking laughed in your face.

It was small, more of a chuckle, but it was enough for you to know where the conversation would end up.

"Right now, seriously?" He said, it was the peak of the fatui beginning their negations with Liyue, and he would leave there soon to talk with the banks over there. It seemed like a perfect moment to you, leave while the irons hot, before childe had to leave the country. His eyes were always void, you assumed it had been that way since he crawled out of the abyss, but they never bothered you like they did in that moment.

"I can't leave now, I've got important business I have to do for the Tsaritsa, she needs me."

"I need you."

You were done. You weren't getting any younger, you should be spending your young days together enjoying life, but he had his work first apparently.

You left the night before he was to board the ship to Liyue, and that was it.

Many months passed, eventually word got around about the osial event, the harbor of Liyue being destroyed in the midst and the Jade Chamber falling Into the ocean. You didn't pay it any mind, not your business.

A large commission brought you to Mondstatd, only a few weeks trip to Liyue, you tried not thinking about it. The knights of Favonious were more than gracious to offer you lodging while helping out, and flirty banter between Kaeya was not unenjoyable. You weren't looking to date at this point, especially someone of such important business for the city.

"Not a kid." He corrected, but feigned saying more for a second, thinking about how he should word the next sentence. "I would pay well, I work for the funeral Parlur in Liyue. But I'm afraid unless you agree I can't go into further details, i will say though that i will require you to keep an open mind, and until i can find a way to fix the problem myself it will be a 24/7 job." To prove his point he placed a large bag, the size of both your fists, onto the table, opening the bag it was full of mora. "This would be half of what I would give now, the other half once the job is complete."

You thought for a bit on what he could mean, an animal maybe? Maybe something macabre like guarding a corpse of an important person? He does work for a funeral parlor apparently. You sipped the last of your wine, you really shouldn't be making decisions tipsy. "Fuck it, why not. I was planning on leaving town anyways, the commission I had here finished a couple days ago anyways."

"Perfect. I will be leaving tomorrow morning. I will await for your arrival ar the Wan Shu funeral parlor at the soonest notice, if I'm not there Hu Tao will be more than accommodating to let you in." He stood up, lightly pushing the bag closer to you, and he lightly bowed a goodbye.

It wasn't until you went to bed you were second guessing. It brought up old thoughts, the rumors of the fatui being apart of the Osail incident coming up specifically. They're still reported to be in Liyue, would it be smart to go? What if you saw Childe there? What if he wants to talk to you? Work things out?

I'm gonna be honest and say that I'm really weak willed so there are some problems with that that I'm just gonna go ahead and list because I feel like unless I explain why I'm too nervous to do commissions people will

1) I have a hard time staying within character limits. I tried a "practice commission" once for someone that was supposed to be like 1.5k words and I wound up doing like 2.2k or so and just gave them the extra length for free (for multiple reasons including it was their birthday but, i could not get through the entire concept they wanted and make it interesting within the word count they wanted)

2) most people don't realize how like, word count directly translates to detail. I see so many people want really cheap commissions (1.5k words for $15 is the one I see the most) and the fact of the matter is like. It's hard to put a lot of detail into something and make it interesting and explore an entire concept or miniature plot and stay within that limit. Just things like introducing where you are or just describing little actions like tone and blinking and motion eventually all add up. But everyone wants to try and get the story they want as cheap as possible, point A to point B, and the fact of the matter is that I'm not a McDonald's and my works aren't impersonal pieces that I just crank out with no heart, cut and paste, likrngmgkgjf its not a cheap cheeseburger, they take time and thought and effort but people are just "i want exactly this for exactly this price and not a penny more"

I guess you could boil this point down to " sometimes certain ideas don't translate into the short stories that everyone wants and I don't trust people not to be mean to me if they don't get what they want"

3) I actually opened emergency commissions once in a friend group but no one wanted anything fnfjnfnffkd lol

4) there are better writers charging the same commission price I would :(

5) I'm just. Extremely overwhelmed right now. I dunno how I would handle another responsibility right now or if I would just completely crack under the pressure because I've been having to shut my brain off and ignore current situations just to be able to function and not be crying 24/7

It makes me happy people say they want to commission me and I get messages every so often (despite putting in my header that I don't do requests/commissions) but like. If I'm having trouble just writing the things I want to at my own pace, how can I expect to be good writing something for someone else that I'm not really emotionally invested in? It doesn't feel right to like, "take a job" im not confident i can do

Also ngl I don't want to wind up having to tell someone like "sorry I don't want to write that" and hurt their feelings 💀 I'm just a little creature and I cannot change this 💀I'm too much of a pussy to do commissions so I throw my work into the void and hope some good Samaritans read my shit lmao. It's why I don't ask for help very often because if I'm sincerely saying "hey we need help" it's an emergency. Announcement: So! I am not abandoning this blog, I swear. Life has been busy this year and I've been swamped with school. I've been writing, but nothing for this. I'm working my way through my drafts, and I've almost got the next part of Not Another Nanny ready to go, but it might take a while. Thank you all for sticking around this long.

Now for the Reminders:

1. My askbox is open 24/7 and there is a prompt list that is always open on my masterlist, which is pinned.

2. I am a real person, with real issues, and am human. I get writer's block, I lose interest in things, etc. Please, do not get on my ass about not producing content. All of us are stressed, but that's not an excuse to act like an ass.

3. If you want to be added to a taglist, personally message me, leave an ask- and if you don't feel comfortable with me posting it, I can answer it privately and write your username down so I don't forget- or you can comment. I check these things frequently and add people whenever I see it.

Sneaky pics and videos of Harry, Louis, Liam and Niall - Notice

Everyone has a right to do what they feel is best on their account. To have some fun with it, some stress release with it, to share news and info with it.

On this account one thing I won't do, now that I know better based on how intrusive and scared the boys feel, I won't ever post or repost any sneaky pics or videos that are taken when the boys are out and about doing their own things in their personal lives.

Fans need to realise that stalking is NOT cool. On top without boundaries between personal and working lives our boys would go insane. To be on show 24/7 is NOT healthy.

Sneaking pics and videos are NOT cool and it's invasion of privacy. It makes you WORSE than the paps. Because paps got permission and they're commissioned majority of the time to take those seemingly random personal out and about pics. Fans do NOT have permission to take sneaky pics and videos. These sneaky pics and videos are DAMAGING to the boys' mental health.

I've reached a point now where I can see if any of the boys are UNCOMFORTABLE taking pics with fans. That's FORCE and COERSION people.

At this point I'm not sure if any of the boys would recognise a genuine accidental fan meet vs a deliberate stalking fan meet. So if this culture of stalking to take sneaky pics and videos for clout and followers doesn't stop, there WILL come a point when Harry, Louis, Liam and Niall will feel UNSAFE and will STOP obliging fans and will STOP taking pics and videos with them when they're on their personal time and not working.

GIVE HARRY, LOUIS, LIAM AND NIALL THEIR SPACE TO LIVE THEIR PERSONAL LIVES PRIVATELY WHILE YOU LIVE YOURS.

They deserve this level of respect from all their fans. They already do so much to give us so much materials like photo shoots, interviews, fans service, go the extra mile to meet and greet fans at venues and events. We don't need to invade their privacies to get more.

BOI OH BOI DO I GOT SOME TIPS FOR U

(I’m not sure what kind of comp you’re going to be using, so I’ll list for both.)

FIRST: Drawing Programs; the free and the great.

-Firealpaca: Lightweight drawing program. I draw Recovery using this! It’s easy on the RAM if you have a weak comp/are paranoid about yours like I am, it is mainly for basic comic making, and has all the basic brushes you need (pen/pencil/airbrush/symmetry/etc). You can add your own brushes as well but they’re p basic settings. Has basic Animation/Gif making as well using Onion Mode! Layout is a piece of cake. Please note that If you leave it open for a week it’ll crash on you, even if you haven’t anything on it at the moment, and sometimes the brush sensitivity just stops working so you just have to close and then open it again. (Also I have no idea how to update it aside from deleting it completely and just downloading the new version from scratch, so thats a thing.) Mac/Windows

-MedibangPaint: This is basically FireAlpaca But Better. Has tons of screen tones, brush patterns, and tools. I don’t use it much because I’m used to FA’s layout and get confused with the the placement of tools in here, so if you can I highly suggest just going with this first. Also has basic animation/gif making! Has storage for the website as well, and you can upload more preset brushes. It’s v anime. This program has waaay more in terms of basically everything, so it just takes more RAM. NBD, you don’t have to have every brush downloaded from the storage ^u^. Mac/Windows

-Clip Studio Paint: Okay this one isn’t free, it’s a pricey one, HOWEVER once a year they take the price way fuckin down by at least 75%. Sign up for the email list and it’ll let you know when that precious day comes. It’s how I got it @u@, around christmastime? This program is basically MedibangPaint On Steroids. I do all of my digital-yet-tradition-style-painting on here! The brushes all have some neat af settings to play with, you can make your own brushes, has tons of screen tones, pre-made panels, and settings. You can save projects as basically anything you need, is a hardy program that almost never crashes, and It’ll take a nice chunk of space on your comp depending on how much memory you have but hey, its worth it. It’s much more complex layout-wise than the other two here, but you get used to it after playing around and watching tutorials haha.

-Mischief: It’s a 25$ app, has like four brushes and five layers only but is vector-based with an endless canvas. Not really worth having unless you like the vector thing. UP TO YOU. I spent forever with this one doing all that homestuck stuff, so it’s not really bad so much as it is a basic bitch. Mac

-MyPaint: I used this a bunch when I still did digital art on my windows laptop before I upgraded to a Mac. It’s easy on the comp and has plenty of brushes and settings. You can also get brush packages if you don’t feel like you have enough that comes with the program! Also has endless canvas; pretty sure you can just select an area and then export as is. I barely remember the rest but It’s pretty great. Windows/MacPorts(which I hate)

-GIMP: I hate this thing. I cannot figure it out for the life of me. It’s got loads of shit though, can handle layers, has plenty of brushes, and can do basic animation/gifs if you ever figure it out. Windows/mac

I’ve heard good things from paint tool SAI and Krita as well, but have never used them myself.

***You can always pay through the nose/use a student discount for the photoshop series and pay that shit monthly, those fuckers have literally everything, but I am a cheap college kid making minimum wage with a car payment; I’d rather just pay once/not at all.

TABLETS: treat that shit like a newborn babe 24/7

-I have literally only ever owned a Wacom Intuos4. It has lasted me six years, and at least five moves across many miles. I broke one of the cord ports the day I opened it by holding it wrong, have one left, and now treat it like it’s going to die if the cord moves badly. Please be aware that if you break both ports, you better either sodder it back together yourself or upgrade to smth else because it costs about as much as the tablet itself was bought at to be fixed. Good news, though, it comes with at least six extra pen nibs, has programable buttons on the side (that I have never bothered to use) and a scroll bar in case you’re too lazy to use the keyboard (…I don’t really use that either unless I’m just scrolling through tumblr LMFAO).

-I would die for a Cintiq.

HOT TIPS: its useful.

-most of the programs listed use the same keyboard shortcuts. MEMORIZE THEM. It’s pretty easy, since you’ll use em a lot. [cntrl/cmmd+T] lets you resize what you just drew on that layer, and [cntrl/cmmd+z] is undo. I use those the most, for obvious reasons.

-vector-based programs are pretty great because when you resize an image it looks prefect. You can’t do that with a program that isn’t, so I just resize the base roughdraft and draw the lineart again on the layer above so I don’t get weird JPEG quality lines.

-You can use a ruler with your tablet, just slap it on and go, but honestly most programs have settings for that. just use those.

-You can also trace stuff on your tablet, so long as the paper isn’t too thick. I just scan/take a photo and then open it up in the program, though. much easier.

-SAVE CONSTANTLY. Art programs like to crash on you, even when they’re hardy and you have a good comp. make it a habit to quick save your work.

-Use a desk and have good posture. You’ll be able to draw a hell of a lot longer if you do. I personally keep fucking up my knees by sitting on my legs as I work out of habit, and don’t actually have a desk chair. Keep your screen at eye level and at a fair distance to prevent eyestrain and also neck-strain haha

-Chances are you won’t be used to the tablet right away. Most places you buy from say it’ll take a couple of months to get used to how weird it is to draw while not looking at your own hand, so don’t be frustrated If your drawings look a bit off at first.

-if you draw at least one thing every day, by the end of the year you’ll have improved exponentially. I literally made this blog to make myself draw once a day.

-don’t be afraid to check out speedpaints and tutorials. It’s always good to get more familiar with the program you’re using and new techniques previously unconsidered.

-get familiar with clipping layers. They are insanely useful; you clip one layer to the one below and then when you draw it only shows up on the drawing of that layer below. Shit is a godsend if you’re bad at coloring in the lines/lazy. The bucket tool is also really useful, and you can adjust the expansion by pixel so you don’t miss anything between the lines.

-experiment with your brushes, shit be fun af

-warmup your wrists before and after drawing. prevent swollen veins and such. dont want hand pain/numbness, its reaaaaally bad.

—basically if your hands hurt stop for the day.

-PNGS are for internet, JPEGS are for printing/fucking with quality (cough hack homestuck)

-resolution doesn’t have to be much more than 350 dpi if its just going to be on a webpage. Maximize that shit if you’re going to be printing, though. Especially if you put stuff on redbubble.

-DeviantArt has this thing called Sta.sh where you can dump art, keep it in perfect quality and just share it with certain people with a link instead of all of the website. Great for storing commission pieces, its the only reason I have DA in the first place.

-you get a different audience depending on what site you use for posting art, so keep that in mind for the kind of feedback you want.

-after awhile of drawing using a tablet, you may lose patience/forget that in traditional art there isn’t an undo button lmfao It’s cool; you don’t have to choose one over the other or anything.

-Honestly you can work around almost anything. You just invent new ways and techniques for yourself and you’ll do just fine.

7/26/24, early evening

Roommate just left. He's going on a two week long vacation with his partner to visit his family and introduce them to one another.

I'm nervous for him but also nervous cause it's been a minute since we weren't together and I think I'm gonna get lonely and worried about him.

Trying to look on the bright side. I DO like living alone and being independent because I like not being beholden to someone else's needs and schedule, but like, it's not like he's just some guy I don't really know that well that is just paying the other half of rent- he's my best friend- so it doesn't usually feel like a burden or anything to work within one another's schedules and needs

Besides my day job I'm gonna try to keep myself pretty occupied while he's gone.

Got a couple other friends I'll be trying to engage with to play pickleball or Digimon or just to shoot the shit.

Gotta try hard to make more money- I haven't got any commissions this month yet. I guess everyone must just be broke atm. I even filled out the commission form myself just to make sure it was still working and was populating my spreadsheet properly. Everything works, just no one wants art/is able to get art from me atm.

Gonna be hitting the gym pretty hard these next two weeks too. I've got stuff for some protein powder overnight oats, salmon bowls with brown rice (I'm gonna try to substitute mayo with some cottage cheese and blend that with some sriracha into sort of a sauce for 'em and top with furikake), and dinner will be kinda variable, but I'm prolly gonna try making a sorta broccoli and pepper steak type thing tonight or tomorrow, and I wanna take another stab at red beans and rice since they'll have plenty of protein and I can stretch it for a while. There was a B2GO on Andouille anyway.

It's kinda nuts how fast the body adapts to new situations and stressors. I've been doing push-ups in my room (almost) every morning for the past week or so, just to try to build the habit and to be able to say that I'm making an effort. Last week I was struggling a lot, but today I can crank out 3 sets of 10 pretty easily, which isn't much but it's pretty good for me, and it's cool to have something in my life with tangible progress.

I didn't think I'd struggle this much with wanting to focus so heavily on my upper-body. Gotta convince myself to do squats- it's pmuch a perfect exercise anyway- but I really wanna bulk up my chest and shoulders more than anything. Gonna mostly be doing dumbbell presses, flys, front raises, and lateral raises for those I think.

Tbh I think my favorite thing to work on is my forearms. I know they don't really NEED any direct focus because they're used in pretty much everything else that I do with my upper body, but they recover lighting-fast, and I really like the way they look and feel with a good pump. I really like hammer curls and wrist curls. I'm thinking of getting a rice bucket too- I hear it's great for the micro muscles in your forearms and for your wrist health, which are both relevant to me as an artist and frequent keyboard warrior.

I'm having a hard time connecting with my triceps and my upper-chest. Triceps are used in pmuch everything and I plan to really dig in on push-ups so I'm not that worried, but I've read that upper-chest is really hard to build up, so I'm gonna dig into that a lot. I don't really know what to do for my back and core either. Crunches and lat pull-downs...? I don't have a pull-up bar right now, but I wonder if I could manage one now. I used to be able to do at least a couple when I was in Tucson. Just need more research.

Besides that... I'm not SUPER focused on losing weight, but I would really like to lose the muffin top, or at least dial it back. It's kinda droopy and I've got a lot of extra flab in my lower back, and it kinda creates this illusion that I have absolutely no butt whatsoever. All the more reason to do those squats I guess. >_>;

Anyway, I've got some exercises in my back pocket and plans for some high-protein meals and snacks, so I guess all that's left is to execute. Obviously there's more research to be done for other things I haven't really touched on yet, but the important thing is that I'm doing it and making the effort and building the habit, right? Right.
