Waiting for the new LMK Season has made go back in time and rediscover one of my older fixations so…

I’ve gone and made these as refs for my old No Straight Roads fic on AO3 that I’m planning to continue. The fic’s name is Rocking all night in case anyone is interested.

Y'know looking back on my time in the NSR fandom it's weird how victimized people tend to make the NSR elites, which I really don't think is warranted beyond Sayu's team and Yinu who are MINORS that were employed into a fascist government system under the guise of success. Yes, NSR was a fascist government, or at the very least an authoritarian hand over a dystopian society.

Even if its general tone is light-hearted and silly, the game tackles themes of propaganda, scapegoating, wealth inequality and planned obsolescence, environmental destruction, media control, saving face for tourists, authoritative voting and more, yet most of them aren't the player's main gameplay focus; a lot of lore and context clues are in the background like the town's layout, interacting with certain objects and talking to NPCs. But those themes are a core message of the game and by only treating the members of NSR as regular old musicians you take out all the nuance.

(Plenty more under the cut. TL;DR: No Straight Roads is a relevantly socio-political game and I wish fans would utilize that side of the characters more)

Both halves of the "music war" as I'm gonna call it for lack of an official term had their faults, and I do like that there is no 100% right or wrong side; no straight road, if you will. BUT ALSO. BBJ realized the entire city was suffering in some way under NSR's leadership and had nothing to lose by challenging the status quo (they literally live in a fucking sewer, I'd be full of rage too). They didn't benefit from initial fame, wealth, or military protection like NSR did; not to mention they were also egged on and decieved by one of their closest allies. When voices don't work ala DK West's attempt, then you turn to action. Action can include smacking the shit out of government officials, as a treat (I enjoyed every second trying to get an S rank in Supernova's level <3)

On that note, the woobification is ESPECIALLY bad with DJSS, Neon J and 1010. I love the silly object heads and smexy robots as much as anyone else but they are specifically meant to be critiques of self-absorbed billionaires (sorry to tell DJSS fans this but he's supposed to be Elon-Musk-adjacent) and the k-pop industry with its military involvement, plus the use of militial force to keep rowdy citizens in line. I'm begging people to PLEASE handle them with more care.

Thankfully, it's clear that NSR reduces its chokehold by the end of the game and all the artists put in a lot of work to improve thanks to BBJ's push. Whether the game's writers made that decision to appeal to their own government's approval or was a genuine end to the story, I like that Tatiana has a moment of reflection and does a complete 180 to make the city better in the end (beyond the threat of the city being destroyed ofc). Even if it's unrealistic, it's a hopeful message and shows that anyone can be corrupted by the right circumstances.

Just PLEASE don't forget the characters' actions and choices along the way for the sake of ship fics and cute art. There's a lot of complexity and angst you can add to the characters with that authoritarian history!

Zuke has a masters degree, but the moment he's paired up with Mayday literally all his braincells go on vacation. They lose a music competition and find out it was rigged and unfair so they decide to care of the problem at its source: by taking out the entire government. They are so blinded by hate for unfair power imbalances and love for rock music and fucking shit up they ask 0 questions and follow some shady guy's orders to break a bunch of stuff, including a 6yo's piano. no thoughts heads empty.

Mayday said ass on public tv, Zuke has a really long annoying rap battle which made 100% the game a pain in the ass. WHY IS DK WEST 2 9 MINUTES LONG?! ZUKE YOU ARE KIDDING ME RIGHT??? Mayday gets sad that a boyband became ugly (they were robots) and Zuke said "good". Mayday destroyed not one but two TVs. I made this a clip btw. This one scene

So, Zuke & Mayday didn’t need to send a guy into space, reverse mermaid hatsune miku, destroy a kids piano, and destroy not one, but several version of robot BTS. At the end of the game they learn “oh yeah, that wasn’t really needed, both types of music can power the city”.

Bunk bed junction started a whole artistic rebellion ON ACCIDENT because they couldn’t stand being rejected from joining the NSR. How do you make people rebel against the GOVERNMENT because you were unable to rock?!!?? I DONT KNOW BUT THEY DID! Reblog

Also yes I did take some liberties with Neon J ordering a lockdown since im pretty sure news of the Phantom thieves being around would cause a panic.

Also you may notice that BBJ does not appear on the general NSR and DJSS calling cards, that was intentional as it was supposed to be prior to them teaming up (Aka PTs would be cleaning up The DJ's palace before the two groups would meet and join forces).

Also ik DK West is not here but he was excluded on purpose since he wouldn't really be a target of the PTs

1. Sayu

Oh Sayu, my beloved <3

The Best Virtual Idol and The Reason I bought this game in the first place!

Her music and style of battle was the most fun and dancy! I still vibe to it to this day-

Sooo many references to Internet Culture and Digital Art fills my heart with warmth and gives me determination just like her song itself as well!

Funny Useless Fact: She is the only boss I've beaten on Rank B on my first blind playthrough!

2. DK West

He's OUR MAN, He's THE BEST!

My second favorite and at the same time the hardest for me to beat.

I personally didn't adore RAP genre at first and never seen anyone preform it as an actual entertaining battle until he showed up...

Funny Useless Fact: When I was drawing him for the first time I listened to his theme on loop for 4 days straight in order not to get myself distracted or lose motivation, so I finish the piece.

3. Yinu

Oh, sweet child...

I love Yinu and her theme lots even if I'm not that big of a fan of Classical Music. And her backstory...Gosh! It made me cry a lot.

And I'm still feel ashamed of breaking the piano ;;-;;

Love the pace of how music goes with the fight and it feels even better when you get into actual rhythm. There were issues that gladly wore off thanks to practice and fighting this boss over and over.

Tho those slamming cords haunt me whenever I listen to the song off-battle-

Funny Useless Fact: I didn't like her Mother at first but when I read more about her and relationship with Yinu my opinion completely changed. And this is why I would nominate No Straight Roads for The Best Storytelling and Character Design.

4. EVE

Two-faced, tall woman.

Used to be one of my favorites but due to some circumstances I can't look at her the same way I used to but I still adore her as a boss!

I honestly love her style of the fight and music that changes depending on who you play.

Tho fighting her is literally like eating a lemon but eventually you kinda just accept your fate and roll with weird artistic antics happening around you.

And EVE herself as a character is so fascinating. Like this is the moment where I started to see that these aren't just bosses, they are actually characters that tie this little but complex story together bit by bit. And this is why I would nominate No Straight Roads for The Best Storytelling and Character Design AGAIN!

Funny Useless Fact: EVE was supposed to be a next character to have a complete and detailed art of but due to my forgetfulness, difficulties with her design (and many other things) - it was never finished but I hope to get that dusty sketch out of WIP folder someday.

5. Tatiana

The Bitch. The Boss.

I don't really like her music and rhythm but I can forgive that since it is kind of fitting for conflict between her and the BBJ.

She tries to hide her true image throughout the story and the fight but ultimately crumbles cause escaping from the past isn't the best option to improve.

I love her design and personality and I wish there were more villains like her. Strict, simple, stoic and yet well-written.

Funny Useless Fact: I've never drawn Tatiana until NSR announced their release on Steam with addition of Fanat Graffiti Contest that I certainly didn't want to miss out on. It was difficult but I did it and ngl, I am still proud of the results.

6. DJ Subatomic Supernova & 1010/Neon J

I can't really say anything much about both of them. Sorry, guys...

Their designs and personalities are fun and well-made but due to one of them being the first you fight as "tutorial" and the other appears only at the end of a fight. (1010 band doesn't count as an actual boss to me more like a part of it) They didn't struck me much as the others did...

I will say this thou: their backstories are interesting. One is an academy astrology teacher with a goal of achieving the stars and other is a war veteran who just wanted everyone to live in peace and he himself despite everything never stopped his passion for doll-making and making people happy.

Just simply, beautiful...

Hi! I was just wondering if u heard about this NSR au where Rin is a member of BBJ and starts the revolution with Mayday and Zuke? I heard that the writer has gone back to updating their fic on ao3.

I am well aware of that fic lmao, I am subscribed to it and I'm so normal about them (lying)

I never thought it'd update since the Rin | White/Zuke tag seemed dead and I entered the fandom pretty late, so it was a pleasant surprise! The writer absolutely came through to feed us and the new update was awesome!

Due to an accident during another Blackout, The Welcome Home gang finds themselves in the bright and music filled world of Vinyl City. The only downside is that they're separated in the different districts that make up the musical city

While they try to find a way home, they also have to adjust to their new surroundings (and avoid Kliff, who still has a vendetta against NSR and BBJ)

Hey Eri I just wanna say that I love you Failed Revolution AU so much!

Also I thought of a bit of a concept but I'm still fleshing it out more so its just me being silly while rambling- Anyway:

Artemis sees how much Vinyl City is affected by the Failed Revolution attempt and realizes that something needs to be done, so she convinces her friends aka Garden of Thorns (which consist of Percy the lead singer, Singel the lead guitarist, Sodapop, bass player, Sylvie, keytarist, Olive aka my NSR sona who's also the drummer, and Maxie, the manager of the band and former drummer) who are looking for an opportunity to make a name for themselves since they're a Punk Rock band to help her finish the Revolution and knock some sense into Tatiana that she can't continue her distain of hating certain music genres (such as rock-). So the band and Artemis come to town and they're ready to face off against NSR and do what BBJ couldn't do, which is finish the Revolution once and for all!

(I hope you like this silly little idea of mine even though it's not canon I came up with it just for fun-)

Oh I really like this! Honestly, this is giving me ideas of the Re-Revolution being an ACTUAL revolution with MULTIPLE bands coming together to fight back against NSR and make Vinyl City a place for the people again!

Bands like Ex-Jay, Garden of Thorns, and my OC Band I have yet to name (along with single artists like West and other rappers who follow him) could all come together and actually be a force to mess with against Tatiana!

It would have to be quick and pretty succinct for it to work because I feel like once Tatiana catches wind of a new revolution she would try to crush it as fast as she could.

Each band could go up against a Megastar, on equal terms, so that Tatiana has no way of saying that the highjackings were unfair and not representative of the people!

West VS. Eve

I don't know who your band would go against, maybe Yinu (just going off the name) or possibly Sayu, while my my OC band who I will one day show off, would go against whichever one yours doesn't fight.

I honestly doubt DJSS would put up much of a fight. Or he could have been doing a collab with any of the other artists at the time of the re-revolution (maybe 1010, maybe Yinu idk). Either that or another band could step up.

Honestly... I would love to see some of the old Goolings, the Grove of Master Musicians, and/or Mystery Man step out of the shadows to help this re-revolution because of just how toxic it is to all music.

Considering that Vinyl City is the music capital of the world, and the world runs on music, fully banning any genre would probably have a detrimental effect on other cities who follow Vinyl City's footsteps. And these older generation of musicians would step out of retirement (or out of the shadows of NSR for Mystery Man) to try and bring balance to the music world.

So Tatiana would have a LOT to deal with. Honestly, it would be nice to see her try and fight alongside her Megastars. I doubt all the Megastars would be playing on the exact same day, but they would be playing much closer to each other since more power is going to be needed so more concerts will happen closer to each other.

Even though it would be nice for her to fight alongside the Megastars, I doubt it would actually happen, or be beneficial to the potential gameplay of this. Since if you defeat a Megastar with Tatiana there, then Tatiana is defeated. So she would probably still be the final boss, with B2J leading the way (mainly as figureheads and the fact that they told each band how to fight the Megastar they were fighting) to fight against Tatiana.

Tatiana would have to face the old generation of music (and her ex-bandmates) along with the new generation of music (and any future generation that decided to help, like Yiruk's band). This would bring to light that Tatiana was Kul Fyra (if the Gooling members hadn't already exposed that) and make her face her own actions.

Possibly even some of the Megastars show up to help support the Re-Revolution (or at least advocate for change). Neon and 1010 would definitely be there, so would Yinu who snuck out and away from Mama, and maybe DJSS. (Mama would end up at the fight somehow, probably after all the real fighting is done and the talking/heart to hearts start happening, and finally she gets to hear how miserable and hate-filled Yinu has gotten)

If Eve was there, she would probably be still fighting alongside Tatiana (but would change sides after talking with Zuke). I don't know about Sayu in this scenario, I could see the Crew coming as themselves, abandoning Sayu for the moment to speak up about all the toxic things that have been happening around them and how scared they are about the future. How they don't want to be a part of what NSR is becoming.

In the end I think this could be the change that NSR needs. I don't know if Tatiana would be willing to step down, but I think, after hearing all of this she would be willing to change things. Massive reforms, bringing on new people to help manage the company, listening to the people once and for all.

Even getting more/new charters of different music genres to help run the city properly. No longer would it be one charter for each district with a bunch of smaller artists under them, but like at least 2 charters who share responsibility and keep the other in check (along with keeping the other districts in check as well).

Yinu, DJSS, and Neon would quit. Eve would probably step away for a bit and come back later, Sayu's Crew would stay in the company but work on backup plans/life. Maybe Ex-Jay and Garden of Thorns become charters. Possibly West and B2J will join NSR as representatives, or at the very least be the voice for the people.

Omg I can't believe I made a happy-ish ending for this AU. I don't know if this is ACTUALLY how I want it to play out, but if other bands do come and start a new revolution then this is how I see it working. Otherwise, I don't see a single band having enough power to truly stop NSR unless it is years later when NSR is starting to internally collapse, or if there is inside help (like from Mystery Man, Kliff, or Neon).

But thank you for making me think of other bands who would be willing to help! It really made me think of whole new scenarios that I was not even considering beforehand!

Tatiana: Mayday, Zuke, listen closely. The Bomber Girls Cures look like duelists from the Wild West and act likewise. Think of your upcoming spar with them as a showdown much like showdowns you see in those old Wild West films. They usually split up to cover more ground during their patrols throughout three points of interest: Barraca Mansion’s front yard, the goods station in the northernmost point of the Metro Division district, and Maritime Warp, the shipyard that built the landing craft Neon J sailed on when he fought in the Border War. All 3 of them await you at the goods station this time around; word from Cure Quick Draw’s reached my ear that they wanted to match the atmosphere of a duel they’d seen in a movie. The Bomber Girls gave me insight into their abilities because they thought you’d want to know what to expect. Cure Quick Draw is the most athletic Cure in the Trio; she’s fast, but Cure Calvary says that she seldom knows what she’s doing in her haste. Cure Calvary’s a friend to quadruped beasts. Expect to see her ride into battle on horseback and be careful lest you get trampled. Cure Arrow’s a mistress of the ranged attack. Her arrows of light are infused with armor piercing magic, which means that Bio-Tactical Shields won’t be as effective. The Bomber Girls have a particular liking of Big and Rich songs; they told me that they plan on singing Leap of Faith during their spar with you two. I don’t know about you, but I like that song.

“there is an innate tragedy in how neon j cannot have his own children due to his cyborg body even though everything he does is to make them happy and live in peace, something he possibly couldn't have from the very real possibility of him being casted into war at a young age he couldn't have his own children so of course when he made 1010- robots that have the energy of young boys, 19 year olds- he couldnt help but get attached. even if he wasn't cast into war the second he turned 18, it's still possible war could've effected his late childhood. men were forced to enlist in the army and all irl, anyway idk how it works in nsr but still. and he comes out of it with glory, but at what cost? the loss of half of himself? his face, his proper identity? i cant do anything to fix any of that. but I'll do my best to make you feel like your new body is just as worth it as your lost one. I love you and I think you're very handsome. mwah”

I think I've said it before at one point on here, but no one wants to scroll through Tumblr's broken tags; so I'll say it again.

Clover went to DJ SubSup's concerts so she knew of him, but he didn’t know of her. They first “met” when Clover was discovered remixing NSR's music and was publicly banned from doing so. He was there as part of the NSR group, not so much as himself. Though I imagine he didn't leave without giving her some harsh words, considering his music was a popular pick for her (because she really liked his music).

Then they actually started getting to know each other after BBJ's rampage when she was sent over to help repair the districts, starting with his.
