Summary: When Anakin burned, something in Obi-Wan burned with him. Now the nightmares of his failures haunt him in a bacta tank as he realizes that Anakin is alive.

All he could remember was heat.

Heat. The smell of burning flesh. The screaming.

I hate you.

The way his insides had twisted together like the crunching of the metal from the ship, from the impact of the losses that he didn’t ever think he’d be able to forget, from the words in the back of his head that he didn’t remember ever issuing.

What was Order 66?

And why did just the number press down on his shoulders like instead of gravity there were magnets and he was durasteel?

Where was everyone else?

Why was he alone?

But hidden from what?

What was the dark and oily feeling that he couldn’t shake? The darkness that had coated everything until he couldn’t see a speck of light, list a mirakluka, blind and hoping that he was going the right way.

Was he going the right way?

Why did everything feel like it was wrong?

A loose, hurried bandage on his shoulder but no memory of from what?

Road burn, like he'd been dragged clear across pavement.

Something was wrong because the only thing he could feel was the heat.

It was burning.

The ruins of the temple were in front of his eyes one moment and then gone in the next.

The force around him screamed out like it’d been shattered, a box of broken transparisteel after a too rough transit.

“I hate you!”

Anakin had died.

Anakin had burned.

Obi-Wan had burned with him.

And the world had burned around them.

People took the (unnecessary, redundant, nail-on-the-head) "You didn't kill Anakin, Obi-Wan. I did." as Anakin being merciful and having one moment of compassion. But why?

I took it as what a bitter, angry Anakin would say to mock Obi-Wan. "You didn't kill me. You didn't have the guts to kill me. I did what you didn't have the strength to. MY decision. So you can take your 10 years of weepy guilt and shove it."

Seriously, the guilt and mourning Obi-Wan went through wasn't about KILLING Anakin. It was leaving him to die to lava alone. I say this as an Obi-Wan fan who LOVES the prequel lightsaber style. We've seen this fight. Rehashing it again 10yrs later only for Obi-Wan to do the same exact thing furthered nothing story or character wise.

And Luke getting thru to Anakin after he spent about 23yrs lost in the Dark Side as Vader was a significant feat. Breaking it up to say Anakin was still having moments of clarity just 13yrs before RoTJ lessens it a bit. Yes, Anakin loved Obi-Wan like a big brother on top of being a mentor, but the third prequel showed how that ceased to matter in all the corruption.
