About Schmelly...

Okay, Okay. I know I'm technically nobody to dictate what people should and shouldn't do in the internet, but I can at least suggest something, right?

Scrolling a little through Ao3 (as usual) I eventually came across the Mike/Vanessa tag, standing tall at 76 works (last checked on 12/12/2023). Nothing wrong there, right? If we're talking about works, then yeah—there really is nothing to say about it. It's more about the tags that I'm a bit concerned with.

You see, you know how the Five Nights at Freddy's lore works, right? Bunch of twists and secrets and revelations here and there...such as Mike Schmidt's true identity in the Movie continuity. Even if there are more things pointing to the opposite at the moment, there is a chance that Mike can turn out to be Michael Afton all along, in a potential sequel to the movie. It's perhaps too soon to tell, but there is a possibility.

The problem with that? Well...if Mike does turn out be an Afton, we might be dealing with an incest problem—like once happened with Luke/Leia long ago. If this does happen, then a lot of writers out there might be subject to harassment by readers who don't like incest, even if you've published your work way before the reveal. I know this because I've seen this happen before in different fandoms.

With that in mind, here comes the suggestion: you know how Ao3 works with an "additional tags" system? Try putting "Mike Schmidt is not Michael Afton" or "Mike Schmidt and Michael Afton are not the same person" in that section. It takes less than a few seconds, and it is already registered in the archive.

That way, the readers are at their own risk by reading your story, because you've warned them about the contents and specifics that are in it. That's what the tags are for, and if a reader still insults you despite you adding that warning beforehand, then you're not at fault; politely tell them that they should've minded the tags before reading.

TL;DR: I recommend for any Mikenessa writers out there to put "Mike Schmidt is not Michael Afton" and/or "Mike Schmidt and Michael Afton are not the same person" in the tags to save them from future headaches in case of a potential revelation in canon.
