Day 3: Warm Food

Here is the start of my Comfortember fics! Very excited about all these <3 while i didn't end up writing as many fics as i wanted to, i'm still happy with the ones that i did end up finishing. I was also just so excited to write about Nora, she's definitely one of my favorite OCs that I have, so i hope y'all enjoy her as well <3

Nora liked days like these. The days where the weather wasn’t too terrible, and Aran’s mood wasn’t terrible either. The days when they strolled down the city streets, maybe into some sort of park or possibly down to the ports, until they found themselves in some sort of trouble. The sort of days when Aran bought her some random food, and they wouldn’t eat some shitty frozen food in their freezer. The days where he even listened to her when she rambled on and on about the books she read, and gave his own thoughts. Because, believe it or not, she liked having his attention and spending time with her brother.

(“C’mon, don’t you have friends for that sort of thing?” he had asked one day. Her blank stare was more than enough of an answer.)

Those days were few, though. A mix of Aran being in the States for boxing season, Nora in school, and her working as a waitress, they never really had the time. And even when they did, it was a hit or miss if it was actually a good day for either of them. The two didn’t exactly go together like peanut butter and jelly–and as oblivious Nora is to those sorts of things, even she knew that.

But on rare good days, it was fun. Nora liked them because they often outshone the bad days she had. And her brother wasn’t the worst, she supposed, so there was that.

“Hey.” Aran nudged her with his elbow, and nodded towards one of the buildings that was across the street. “Wanna get something to eat?”

The idea of getting out of the bustling street appealed to Nora, as did the idea of getting some food. But even from afar she could see how jam-packed it was, like a tin can full of sardines. She wasn’t sure how she felt about that.

But of course, Aran didn’t give her a chance to answer. Instead, he grabbed her by her arm, and started to drag her over to cross the street. Right into traffic too, with loud car horns and screeching of tires filling the air. Drivers yelled, Aran yelled back, and Nora quickened her step to cross faster.

Lunch rushes were always the worst, and of course it was no different in the restaurant that her brother pushed her into. She ran into a man with a large coat, stumbled back into her brother, and she hated how cramped it was. She felt stuffed inside, as the small waiting area was already packed with people who were in line for a table. The building was filled with noises of people talking, shouting or laughing, cutlery scraping against plates, and the sizzlings of food in the kitchen.

The place became a sudden overload for her senses, and Nora hated it. She wished that she had brought her headphones.

Nora gave a distressed hum, in hopes that Aran would hear. Whether he heard her or not didn’t matter though, because she was left ignored. She stuck close to him, even though her cheeks burned in embarrassment as she realized how weird it was for a seventeen-year-old like her to be so pathetic and overwhelmed. 

The only upside she found was that she was at least somewhat warm now.

She ended up being too focused on keeping herself grounded that she hadn’t realized that a waiter had asked them to follow him to their table. She stumbled a bit when her brother pushed her, but she followed. Whether Aran cut his way in front of the other people who were waiting, or the line just moved that quickly, Nora wasn’t sure. Wasn’t like she paid much attention to her surroundings.

They were led to a booth, one that was surrounded by other bustling and loud patrons. Once again did she just wish that they ate somewhere quieter and less packed. They looked through the menu, and they ordered. Aran talked, as much as he always did. He ranted on and on, not letting Nora get a single word in. Not like she would anyway, as she never really had much to say.

Aran was always like that though. Always unnecessarily filling up the space with his voice, somehow leading the one-sided conversation that was about boxing to American restaurants to animals to New York, until he completely forgot what he originally wanted to say. It frustrated Nora to no end.

She listened as he drummed his fingers on the table. Watched as he bounced not one, but both legs, causing the table to shake and rattle. She stayed silent as she gripped the sleeves of her jacket tightly.

Nora was pulled out of her mind, once again by her brother. A flick to her nose caused her to flinch, and give a harsh glare at him.

“Oh good, ya didn’t check out on me.” Her brother leaned back into his seat, and she fought the urge to roll her eyes. Instead she just stared at him. “Mind telling me what caused it this time?”

“Too loud,” she answered. Her brother gave an inquisitive look, and she just shrugged. “Don’t like the noise.”

“Well, it’s good that I’m taking you out then, yeah? Getting used to it will help.” Nora shrugged again. That’s what everyone said–if she just actually went outside instead of staying in her room all day long, then eventually she would get used to the loudness of the world. But it didn’t solve the problem of losing herself when it got too overwhelming, nor did it help on the bad days when even the quietest of noises made her upset. Nothing adults ever told her helped, and she doubted Aran would be the exception.

“I should’ve brought my headphones,” Nora muttered. She withheld a flinch when her brother scoffed.

“Surprised you didn’t. Never seen you leave the flat without those dingy things. What’s with that, anyway?”

“It helps,” she answered, and added, “with the noises. It makes ‘em quieter, easier to deal with.”

“Does it really?”

“Mhm.”

“Huh.” Aran never stopped drumming his fingers. She could see on his face that he was thinking–a rare sight for the man.

She gripped her sleeves tighter, listening to the deafening silence between them, taking in all the other noises around her. Rubbing the fur on the cuff of her jacket with her thumb calmed her a bit, but not by much.

The waiter came by with their food. She mouthed a silent “thank you”, while her brother muttered his own.

“Well,” her brother started, grabbing a chip off of his plate, “if ya want, I can buy ya a new pair once we’re done here.”

She snapped her gaze up to him. “Really?”

“Eh, why not? The one you got is shitty and old anyway, might as well replace it.” He tossed the chip into his mouth, and she couldn’t help but smile, even while her brother started to bang his fist on the table because of the hot food burning his mouth.

Nora fought the urge to stomp her feet in delight. She couldn’t stop smiling. Eager to finish her meal and get out of the boisterous restaurant, she quickly scooped up spoonfuls of her stew to finish quickly. She then started to bang her fist as her tongue burned. She glared at her brother, who gave an ugly snort at her pain.

Whatever, it was fine. She continued to eat–slowly, blowing on the food this time–and felt herself warm right up. More than just from the heater of the building, or from the burning hot food, but from what her brother said. He’d buy a new pair of headphones. He would buy it. It was something so small, something that didn’t even really matter, but it made her smile nonetheless. Warmth spread through her chest, and Nora stomped her feet in glee, as a small indulgence. Her boots clacked loudly against the wood, annoying and harsh but it felt good. And then her brother didn’t say anything about it, and Nora couldn’t stop smiling.

Surprised I went quiet for so long-

Anyways, it's time to talk about:

My Silly Apocalypse AU!

First off: Who in the ever lovin' hell is Silly? Well, gather around, as I tell you about him.

This is the only drawing I've done with him, but anyways (we're going to ignore the orange belly I gave him without realizing Tinky had it already, if you have color suggestions let me know please)

Sligamore, or Silly for short, is the fanmade Lord in Black character I was talking about in my last post. Silly can manipulate emotions, but instead of pushing them to anger and rage like Blinky, he pushes them to insanity. He toys with them, and almost like Pokey, can control them, hence the puppet face. This level of insanity can lead to something doing something very out of character, leading to arson, murder, and many other crimes.

So imagine he takes over almost all of Hatchetfield?

Now, before I go explaining my entire apocalypse, let me first explain some VERY important details:

This AU is entirely focused on me and my friends own universe. Most of the characters I'm going to mention are OCs of ours, and a lot of those OCs have important connections to certain characters. One of the biggest ones is definitely Alexa Sutton, who belongs to my best friend. Alexa is Henry's spouse in our universe, they live together under the same roof, and all of that. Another OC I should mention is Harper Kennedy, who also belongs to my best friend. Harper is relatively Alexa and Henry's adopted daughter (in their eyes). There's also my main OC Piper Lovelock, who has a very mother-daughter relationship with Charlotte.

Another thing I'd like to mention is that some characters (Nora and my OC Astra for example) use neo pronouns, and you may see me using them a lot. Nora uses She/It/E/Em pronouns, and Astra uses They/Star/Sun (And star is mute).

I figured I'd tell you guys that since it's very important in the Silly Apocalypse AU.

Now onto the AU:

It starts off with very few people: Sam, Mr. Davidson, Emma (no main character moment this time lol), Henry, and Astra (a Beanies OC of mine). It takes about two months to finally realize something isn't right with these people, but the signs have been clear from the start: Glowing red eyes, fits of laughter (random singing if you're Henry), erratic behavior, etc.

The first victim to die is Nora.

Nora is in eir office, wondering why Astra has been so unresponsive, and whats wrong with Emma that she isn't coming into work. It's going through some paperwork, planning a schedule out, before she feels a sudden pain. Sharp pain. Looking down, it sees a blade sticking out of its stomach. E spits out blood, shakily raising her hand to the blade, which is ripped out from behind. Nora bends over, still in shock about what just happened. Turning around slowly, e finds Astra, a bloody kitchen knife in hand, staring at her with a wild grin and red eyes.

Before it can react, it's suddenly pinned to the desk, being stabbed repeatedly until they pass out (and die). Astra is completely oblivious and keeps stabbing Nora, unaware of a horrified Zoey standing by the entrance. Zoey locks sun in the office, before running back to the front in tears, where Piper and Ryan (another of my friends OCs) are currently.

They try to ask what's happening, but Zoey is too shaken up to properly talk, simply telling them to call the cops. Which was their first mistake. Sam (we'll get back to him in a moment) had already infected the other cops in the station months prior, and once they reach Beanies, they kill and infect whoever is there. Piper is the only one who escapes, running back to their apartment where Emma is.

Focusing on another character now. Charlotte is at home, getting lunch prepared when she's attacked by Sam. She's confused, and she doesn't know what exactly is going on or why her husband is trying to murder her. In an act of self defense, she kills him with his own pistol. Scared and in shock, she takes the gun and runs off, trying to find her friends.

Going back to Piper for a moment, Piper has made it back to the apartment, trying to tell Emma about everything that happened at the Cafe. Emma, however, seems out of it, holding herself back from attacking her friend. Emma tells Piper that they need to run, and how a mysterious 'he' has taken over. Piper is confused, and wants to know more, but Emma is already gone. Piper takes a baseball bat and runs, knowing that she'll need something to defend herself with. Eventually, she finds Charlotte, and the two of them stay together.

Switching to the office crew: Ted, Paul, Bill, Melissa, and Ken Davidson (yes, his name is Ken, and I will call him such). The crew is wondering what's going on outside the office, and wondering what's happening to their boss. Melissa informs Paul that he is needed in Ken's office to have a little talk. Nervous, Paul obliges, and everyone else waits. After waiting for quite a while, Paul stumbles out, being chased by Ken. He's been infected, and he's shouting at everyone else in the office to run. People left and right are either dying or being infected, and the crew have no choice but to run. In the heat of the moment, Melissa is separated from everyone else. She finds Charlotte and Piper, and the three of them decide to stay together to find the others.

Now for the final character: Henry. Henry knows something is wrong, that some kind of apocalypse is going to start. Alexa is trying to get through to him, while Harper is begging for her to run. Henry tells them both that they need to get away from him before he accidentally hurts them, as he struggles to fight off the infection. Reluctantly, Alexa takes Harper away, grabbing her cane (also a sword) and her mobility aid dog, Bear. The three of them are left on their own, forced to face the horrors of their once loving (that's a stretch.) town.

Back with the office crew, Ted and Bill are hiding away in an alley, trying to think of the most logical (well, Bill is at least) reason as to everything happening around them. What they didn't know, was that there were other people hiding as well. At least, until a girl in a red flannel and orange beanie pops out, threatening to hit them if they get closer. You guessed it! Deb is in the alley, and she isn't alone. Alice peaks out from behind Deb, and runs into Bill's arms. The two girls explain how they were on their way to Beanies when they saw everything that happened, and they ran to the alley to hide. The four of them stay together for the remainder of the story.

And that's basically how the story starts!

Bill, Alice, Ted, and Deb are all one group, and the second main group to focus on. Melissa, Piper, and Charlotte are one group for now, until they end up finding Harper and Alexa; these 5 are the main stars of the story.

I really do have so much more to explain, and so much more to talk about in this AU. There's death, betrayal, fury, and so much more (and in true Starkid fashion: some comedy). I would be happy to talk more about this if anyone really wants me to, along with making art and designs for the characters!

Sorry for like,, posting a lot today but the urge to talk about my Oc’s and their world grows stronger with every passing hour.

Anyways, have some Magic Spark drawings, I’ve only done three out of the six I have to do, so I’ll do the other half tomorrow 👍

Wowie okay, Leo’s up first. For his, I wanted it to be more…fluid? Forever changing? Liquidy. I kinda wanted it to not have a specific shape that it sticks to like most do. In a way it kind of reflects his eagerness to take everything in, learn all he can about the world and it’s history. Not sure, maybe I’m looking into my own drawing too much.

Nora’s!!! Ngl, this one’s my top out of the three I’ve done so far. I also struggled a bit with its design. I knew I wanted it to look like a flower since Nora has plant rejuvenation magic, but I was unsure at the time if I wanted to make it look like it had a stem or not. Ultimately I did forgo the stem and instead just chose to do a flower by itself. Also her spark colour is lavender because lavender has calming effects on the brain and Nora is a calming presence in amongst the chaos. She’s like the groups stone.

And 3/3, we’ve got Ryan. His was by far the easiest for me since I knew what I wanted when I started drawing it. I knew I wanted to make it look..whispy? In a sense since his magic is wind magic it’d be more flowy but still hold a shape unlike with Leo’s how it’s all over the place in terms of its shape.
