Nevada Building ('56-'78)

'56: Nevada Building, a 4-story office & retail space designed by Zick & Sharp opens in Apr. The owner-developer is not clear. In '62, Three-O-One Corp (Moe Dalitz, Allard Roen, Israel Alderman) are cited as the owner of the Nevada Building at this time. (RJ 3/8/56, RJ 10/9/62)

'78: Jan., First word of the hotel in the press. Moe Dalitz will build the hotel, with Herb Tobman and Al Sachs operating the hotel & casino. “Tobman and partners Al Sachs and Fred Richmond have plans … for a 300-room hotel.” A later piece in the Review-Journal states Tobman & Sachs first proposed the Sundance in '76, that they owned the Nevada Building and had acquired the adjacent properties. (RJ 1/22/78, RJ 7/3/80)

'78: Nov., Nevada Building demolished. (RJ 11/8/78)

'79: Jun., Carrao Construction Co. begins work on Sundance. (RJ 6/17/79)

'79: Sep., Dalitz requests $27M loan from the state Retirement Board for the hotel construction.

'80: Jun. 19, Dalitz called by Gaming Control Board for licensing because of a guaranteed a line of credit to operators Sachs & Tobman. Sachs (57.5%) and Tobman (32.5%) have already been approved. (The other 10% owners, not accounted for in the press.) The Dalitz probe is put on hold ultimately never appears before the board before Jackie Gaughan leases the casino in '84.

Sundance ('80-'87)

'80: Jul. 3, Sundance opens. The hotel has one tower, 17 floors, 290 rooms, and a 450-space garage. Following the MGM Grand fire later in the year, Sundance is cited by Las Vegas Fire Marshal Ned Backer as the only downtown hotel to meet all fire-safety features required under building codes adopted by the City Commission in Jul. '79, "a firefighter's delight." (RJ 11/28/80)

'81: Construction of the second tower begins in Jan., completed in Nov. The 34-story, 360-room, 400-foot tower is the tallest in downtown Las Vegas. Total rooms: 650.

'83: Jun., Sundance leased to Jack Pieper.

'84: Jul., Sundance leased to Jackie Gaughan and El Cortez management, as court-appointed supervisors.

'86: Dec. 1, Lincoln Management Group of Reno's Fitzgerald's Hotel, takes over Sundance lease as court-appointed supervisors.

Feeling at home in Benin, Anelka decided to settle there last July and open a travel agency. She hopes to become a citizen by taking advantage of a law passed in September that grants citizenship to those who can trace their lineage to the slave trade.

The new law, which was initiated by President Patrice Talon, who has been in office since 2016, is part of a broader effort by Benin to reckon with its own historical role in the slave trade.

The law is open to all over 18 who do not already hold other African citizenship and can provide proof that an ancestor was deported via the slave trade from anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa. Beninese authorities accept DNA tests, authenticated testimonies and family records.

Benin is not the first country to grant citizenship to descendants of slaves. Earlier this month, Ghana naturalized 524 African Americans after the West African country’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, invited them to “come home” in 2019, as part of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in North America in 1619.

But Benin’s citizenship law carries added significance, in part because of the role it played in the slave trade as one of the main points of departure.

European merchants deported an estimated 1.5 million slaves from the Bight of Benin, a territory that includes modern-day Benin and Togo and part of modern-day Nigeria, said Ana Lucia Araujo, a professor of history at Howard University who has spent years researching Benin’s role.

Benin has struggled to resolve its legacy of complicity. For over 200 years, powerful kings captured and sold slaves to Portuguese, French and British merchants.

The kingdoms still exist today as tribal networks, and so do the groups that were raided. Rumors that President Patrice Talon is a descendant of slave merchants sparked much debate while he was running for office in 2016. Talon has never publicly addressed the rumors.

Benin has openly acknowledged its role in the slave trade, a stance not shared by many other African nations that participated. In the 1990s, Benin hosted an international conference, sponsored by UNESCO, to examine how and where slaves were sold.

And in 1999, President Mathieu Kérékou fell to his knees whiling visiting a church in Baltimore and issued an apology to African Americans for Africa’s involvement in the slave trade.

Memorial sites are mostly in Ouidah. They include the “Door of No Return,” which marks the point from which many enslaved people were shipped across the Atlantic, as well as the town’s history museum.

At the “Tree of Forgetfulness,” enslaved people were said to be symbolically forced to forget their past lives.

“Memories of the slave trade are present on both sides of the Atlantic, but only one of these sides is well known,” said Sindé Cheketé, the head of Benin’s state-run tourism agency.

Nate Debos, 37, an American musician living in New Orleans, learned about Benin’s citizenship law while visiting for the Porto Novo mask festival. He had never been to West Africa before, but his interest in the Vodun religion led him there.

Debos is the president of an association called New Orleans National Vodou Day. It mirrors Benin’s Vodun Day, a national holiday on Jan. 10 with a festival in Ouidah celebrating Vodun, an official religion in Benin, practiced by at least a million people in the country.

It originated in the kingdom of Dahomey — in the south of present-day Benin — and revolves around the worship of spirits and ancestors through rituals and offerings. Slavery brought Vodun to the Americas and the Caribbean, where it became Vodou, a blend with Catholicism.

“Vodou is one of the chains that connects Africa to the Americas,” said Araujo, the professor. “For enslaved Africans, it was a way of resisting slavery.”

European colonial powers and slave owners sought to suppress African cultural and religious practices. Vodun was preserved through syncretism, as African deities and spirits were merged with or disguised as Catholic saints.

“Our African ancestors were not tribal savages, they had sophisticated cultures with very noble and beautiful spiritual practices,” Debos said.

He now seeks to establish more partnerships with collectives practicing Vodun in Benin, which would require him to stay in the country for longer periods. He will apply for citizenship, but not with an intention to move there permanently.

“At the end of the day, I am an American, even when I am dressed in the wonderful fabrics and suits they have in Benin,” Debos said.

Anelka, the travel agent now living in Benin, said her motivations behind getting Beninese citizenship are mostly symbolic.

“I know I will never be completely Beninese. I will always be considered a foreigner” she said. “But I am doing this for my ancestors. It’s a way to reclaim my heritage, a way of getting reparation.”

The look of... VIII: Shimizu 清水

Historical context The first official date in the history of Shimizu Geigi is 1872, when "Machi Geisha" (まち芸者), who were distinct from "Kaku Geisha" (廓芸者), appeared. A Kenban (registry office) was established in 1877. At that time, Machi Geisha and Kaku Geisha combined were around twenty people. Only ten years later, in 1887, their number had increased to 100. The number of Geigi continued to grow.

In 1938, the number of Geigi was around 260, and they were highly regarded nationwide for their skills in art and behaviour. In 1951, a "Shimizu Geigi school" (清水芸妓学校) was opened, around 150 Geigi attending the event.

In the 1970's, Japan's period of economic growth started tapering off, interest in traditional arts dwindeled, which resulted in less work opportunities for Geigi and the number of Ryotei decreasing. In response to this, local business leaders and Shimizu Geigi started an organisation to help fostering new Geigi (Seibikai 清美会).

By 1985, their number had decreased to thirteen and the Kenban closed. In 1991, local businessmen and Geigi formed a different company (Seibi Co. 清美(株)), which worked as employer for Geigi. Due to a bad economic environment, Shimizu Odori (清水をどり) was last held in 1998, Seibi Co. was dissolved in 2004, and Haru no mai (春の舞) was discontinued in 2009. As a result of this, some of Seibi's employees became independent Geigi.

Allegedly, the number of Geigi hit rock bottom in 2011 with only two remaining. However, in 2012, around eleven Geigi worked in Shimizu. Since then, the city had a steady stream of Geigi coming and going again. At the end of this year, 2023, there are ten Geigi working in the city.

Notes Shimizu was merged with Shizuoka in 2003. Shimizu Geigi and other traditional arts performers are backed by 静岡伝統芸能振興 Shizuoka dentô geinô Shinkô-kai/Shizuoka traditional performing arts promotion association, which is the successor to Seibikai. You might notice I didn't start this post with a historical b/w photo. There are some old photos on the Shizuoka Dentogeino homepage, but they are the size of a postal stamp. And that's it. The 1D interview from their Nov 2011 issue, page 16, was also used in a masterpost on "Harry's sexuality" from 9 April 2012 by @hazzalovesboo - I have elongated to archive the post here (it used the @lourrythoughts translation post as a source as well, which was posted on 18 Feb 2012)

The shift from 2011 to 2012 in terms of how H&L were allowed to publicly communicate, interact, behave themselves and be seen together was severe! I'm currently elongating to archive all the BPL 2011 and 2012 timelines (which will all be linked here) and man... fuck, the contrast is SO stark, it all paints such a clear picture. There's so many lovely, funny and beautiful moments for Harry and Lou and then... so many gut-churning, heartbreaking ones. :(

So yeah, H&L’s closeting had REALLY started taking off in mid 2012 and the contents of that very candid Nov 2011 queer magazine interview were definitely the opposite of what Modest!/Syco wanted/expected of/planned for H&L. Plus, the readers of that magazine were certainly not in the target group that was chosen for 1D. Plus plus, we know they were under the contractual thumb of people who -on top of everything else- were also homophobic as shit.

March: Taylor Swift (5 years older, singer, re articles from Oct 2012) 

April: Lily Halpern (3 years older, singer, ‘it’s getting serious’, ‘been going on for months’. Harry’s rep said he denied even knowing her)

April: Jillian Harris (15 years older, ‘TV personality’) - claimed Harry asked her out and she turned him down. 

April: Sarah-Louise Colivet (6 years older, Irish photographer, it’s ‘serious’, claimed to have spent night with him then deleted her post)

April: Emma Ostilly (1 year older, model, kissed goodbye at door, also said to have been ‘thrown out’ of his hotel [refused access] with another girl and Harry ‘fought’ his security over it). She is the unknown girl mentioned in NZ interview. H denied she was a GF. Said to have caused a spat with TS. 

May:  Emily Atack (5 years older, actress, said:  ‘the only direction he’d be going in is the bedroom’). Claimed it was a fling and they both moved on. 

June 24: Mirror headline on Des saying Harry dates ‘three women at once’ (article does not say this).  

June 24: Same day, Lucy Horobin article breaks about affair in 2011. 

June 26: Caroline Flack ‘overheard’ saying she’s afraid ‘private snaps’ of her and Harry will be leaked. 

July: Caggie Dunlop (4 years older, Made in Chelsea). Said to have been going on for nine months, on and off. He denied it was romantic. 

Sept: Pixie Geldof again.

Nov: Taylor Swift again (official start, till Jan 04)

Nov 06: articles about Harry being scared the first time he had sex in case he got the girl pregnant and stressing that he now always wears a condom. Also once ‘got into bed with a friend’s mum’ (it was a dare). Articles resurface in summer 2023, reprinted multiple times. 

Nov 11: Article saying Harry saying he won’t date anyone older than his mum. (Story resurfaces around Jan 5 2021 in many outlets). 

2013 - age 19

March 11: Shaniece Nesbitt (18, Megan Fox lookalike). ’Spends night’ with him in Culloden Hotel. She firmly denied it and said a male friend was there the entire time. 

March 17: Daily Star publishes article saying Harry sleeps with 3-4 girls a night and has 12 waiting for him at any given time. Article is picked up and widely reprinted. 

March 20: Jade Thirlwall (2 years older, singer, Little Mix). Harry is ‘sexting’ her despite apparently fucking 12 girls a night. 

April 13: Harry ‘asks’ events manager Michelle Mooney (17 years older) to come backstage and she refuses.

April 27: Kimberley Stewart (14 years older, VS model). Rod’s daughter. 

July 02: Kara Rose Marshall (2 years older, model). 

Aug: Paige Reifler (4 months older, VS model)

Sept: Cara Delevingne (2 years older, VS model, later came out as pan)

Sept 30: Pix released of ‘steamy embrace’ with Paige Reifler.

Feb 05: Haley Giraldo (9 years older, Pat Benatar’s daughter). Said to have cheated on Kendall with her. Have been dating for a year!!! She denied rumours.

Month??: Cara Delevingne (2 years older, model)

Unknown date: Kate Gallivan of The Batchelorette. Date, ‘proper’ kiss, heavy making out, drinking, talking, rolling around, but she ‘had her period’ so she didn’t sleep with him. 

Month?? Alexandria Morgan (acc. her - but she also said 2015 and 2016, one failed date after he saw her golfing tiktok, 2 months older, model)

April: Harry linked with actress Gemma Chan (12 years older than him) despite her boyfriend Jack Whitehall literally being with them. 

Oct: Erin Foster (12 years older, writer, creator of Bumble. Few dates, were papped picking pumpkins in ‘matching’ skinny jeans)

Nov: Nadine Leopold (same age, VS model. Dated until  March 2015)

Dec 12: Barack Obama - rumours rejected by Harry.

Unknown date: tried to hook up with the daughter of one of the Slipknot crew.

March 1: Harry seen out on the town in NYC. Looks drunk. 

Sept: Harry is cast in Don’t worry darling. 

Oct 26: shooting begins for DWD.

Nov: Olivia Wilde (10 years older, actress) says she did a ‘victory dance’ after casting Harry. 

Nov 04: Shooting shuts down for two weeks on DWD. Harry, Pine and Florence Pugh all quarantined. 

Nov mid-month: OW announces she has been separated from Sudeikis ‘since beginning of year’. 

During shooting: rumours later surface that HS and OW were MIA for much of shooting and the film was really directed by Pugh and the DP. Rumours also emerge later that H had an affair with Florence before Olivia.

Jan 04: Holivia official start date. Papped holding hands at Jeff Azoff’s wedding, both wearing Gucci. Harry officiates at the wedding and calls OW his ‘girlfriend’.

Jan 18 : Pic posted on Twitter of Taylor Russell at one of Harry’s Wembley concerts, dated from before their museum walk pix. 

Jan 20: Taylor Russell is at the Loewe show, without Harry. 

Jan 25: Pix published of Harry in London with TR ‘recently’. Pix by Eroteme. 

Jan 30: Daily Mail prints article on TR riding round London on a Lime bike. Pix by Beretta Sims. 

Feb 01: Several articles appear in media, all talking about how Harry needs to settle down and have children. 

Feb 10: Harry papped through a car window walking with TR and Root in the road. Pix look photoshopped. 

Feb 12: Harry ‘goes out to dinner’ with TR and they both ride home on Lime bikes with a Pleasing bag in the pannier - pix by Backgrid published the next day. Harry is wearing a North Face jacket identical to Louis’. 

Feb 18: While TR attends the BAFTAs, Harry appears in public with his new hair - short but growing surprisingly quickly - attending a match at Luton between Luton and Man Utd. Rob Stringer (club director) in attendance. 

      Headlines appear focusing on lonely TR without her boyfriend. 

March 14 Harry attends Mitch’s concert in NYC. TR turns up after her performance and is papped leaving the venue with him. Looks like an argument in the car. Her play, whose sales were low, sells out immediately. 

March 15 Harry rumoured to be seen on crosswalk with TR. Rumours dismissed. 

March 16 Harry is photographed on a crosswalk with TR. Very clear pic. 

March 18 Harry and TR papped leaving his NYC apartment wearing The Row clothing. Clearly a pre-arranged shoot. Harry also papped inside and then outside a bookshop in NYC with Max Ritz, Xander’s brother. 

March 19 Pix emerge of Harry and TR in the cab after Mitch’s concert - they may be arguing. Video emerges of Harry stomping into Sony in NYC.

April 17: Pic of Harry with TR on a train in Japan - echoes the pic of him and Louis so many years ago. 

April 19: Pix of Harry and TR emerge in Japan. He’s wearing a blue shirt identical to one posted in manips of him on the 18th. 

May 03: People publishes article on how H & TR are really serious.

May 04: Pix are published of Harry riding a Lime Bike ‘recently’ in London - it’s assumed that these are from the 29th. He is wearing the Umbro tee visible OVER a hoodie over another tee. Daily Mail publishes article using these pix, lots about Harry’s wealth and not one word about Taylor Russell. 

May 06: Met Gala. Taylor attends without Harry. Some magazines joke about him being out on his bike. 

May 19: BUA for Harry and Taylor hits the headlines.

May 20: Tabloids full of Haylor II breakup, all using the timeframe of 14 months (it’s a year). 

Harry leaves for Italy and is repeatedly papped there. Officially 'single' since the BUA.

ohhh yeah no my art style has changed a lot through the years! its funny because it used to be a lineless style for awhile! then it fluctuated to lineart, now its back to mostly the lineless!

I think my art really came into its own in 2019 when I played Smile for Me and discovered @/yugsly art style and fell in love. their my biggest inspiration, I admire all their work and take a heavy inspiration from them for sure
