Which as I'm saying that makes me think of Sleeping At Last's Eight, which. I think it fits. I may not know the full story and the song may not be a perfect 1:1 but I know that guy personally

You get two for the price of one! One for Volo, and one for Steven. Volo because despite their usual Ghost/Dragon theming they're very much also into nature/forest themes, Steven because as the Archchosen of the literal Earth they need to learn how to use Grass-types or else LOL

Torterra. They already have one and I thought it would be very fitting for them because I turned the tree on its back into a Tree of Life motif

Venusaur. Volo loves anything that's dragon-adjacent.

Poltchageist. Perfect for representing the Ghost-type mischief they like to do

Amoonguss. Very fitting for Volo, seeing as it's competitively absolutely terrifying

Trevenant--evolves from a Pokémon that was once a deceased child, they have lost a child before so I can see them taking in a poor lost Phantump and caring for it as their own

Serperior--much like Venusaur, it's very dragon adjacent, and come on, it's got "superior" in the name, there's no way that doesn't appeal to Volo's narcissism LOL

I'm totally making the team I have here canon to Steven. Headcanon also that they tried to cheat by including as many Steel-, Ground-, Rock- and Dragon-types as possible, but Maxie / Groudon would have stopped them from making it their entire list. LMAO

Hydrapple. They were recommended the Applin line by their colleagues, specifically Flapple and Appletun, but given their prior experience with dragons, they wanted something with a little more bite. Their Hydrapple made them regret that decision, because he is an absolute MENACE.

Grovyle. The second grass dragon on this list. Barely got a pass after they added Hydrapple because "it's the starter Grass-type, it'll be easier to raise."

Capsakid--they're one heck of a competitive battler and they recognize Scovillain as a great Moody user when they see one.

Thwackey--Rillaboom is another great competitive Pokémon, and a starter to boot. (See, guys? They aren't just using "starters are easier to raise" as an excuse!)

Lombre--Given to them by Wallace, is also part of their growing Water team because gods know they have problems with Water-types too. Look! They're actually trying!

Ferroseed--And to round things out, a Steel-type. They need to ease into this by having a foot in the familiar. Cut them some slack.

im gonna be real i apparently missed that implication for aoc because i interpreted him being terse with link as feeling usurped by someone who seems greater despite being newer

i like aoc a lot so far. im very fond of purah and robbie, they're a lot more capable than you're led to believe and you can really SEE it in the game. but hey is just me

AOC did so much really, really well, don't get me wrong. I adore what they did with Mipha and Sidon (and also very much like Mipha being a Menace on the battlefield + Zelda getting to fight for once!) and my god Robbie and Purah are such a delight I adore them in canon but I would not love them as much as I do without AOC that's for sure.

but it just feels. very weird, that Revali dislikes Link for literally the exact opposite reason as he does normally? (and also like. going from 0 to 100 immediately in that first scene and that just,,, never being addressed later :()

ymmv and all, different people get different things out of games and honestly it's always so much fun to see different people think about different things that I otherwise might not think about at all :>
