Casey's Gift Fic?

Oh, man. You managed to pick one of the old ones. This is a fic that I still owe my younger sister as part of her 2012 Christmas gift. 😬🙈 And while I know she's definitely forgotten she asked for it, I still feel like I need to finish it. Some day. 😆

Okay, so keep in mind that this was requested in 2012, the height of All of the Avengers Live Together in Stark Tower as One Big Crazy Family fics. It's important that you remember that. So, it's supposed to be a Darcy Lewis fic where I write my sister in as Darcy's best friend from high school and Casey comes to visit Darcy at the tower and high jinks ensue. And if I remember correctly Darcy & Steve are supposed to be dating and I think Casey is supposed to end up on a date with Clint.

Anyways, you get all of what I've written so far because it is not a lot. It's like, two paragraphs. And the dialogue is so cringe so I apologize for what you're about to read. 😆 “Darcy, who’s this?” Tony asked while leering at the young woman currently standing in front of him. “Someone who’s not afraid to taze you if you don’t stop looking at me like that,” the young woman replied with narrowed eyes before Darcy could introduce her. Tony tilted his head and squinted at the young woman, “Are you related to Lewis? Does being tazer happy run in the family?” Darcy sighed and rolled her eyes before saying, “Casey, meet Tony. Tony, meet Casey.” “Wait," Tony said in shock. "Casey? THE Casey? As in the Casey you went to high school with? The Casey who stars in almost all your stories about your adolescent high jinks? You’re that Casey?” “Uhm, yes?” Tony turned to Darcy. “She’s not allowed to meet Clint,” he turned to Steve. “Keep her away from Clint. JARVIS! Make a note. Clint and Casey. Scratch that, Clint, Darcy and Casey are not allowed to be in the same room together. EVER.” He turned back to Steve. “Has Darcy told you about her high school days? Do you know about Short Stuff’s childhood? Of course you do. What is it with you and girls with guns?” “I really hope you’re not talking about shooting stuff with out me,” Clint said as he walked into the common room. Tony pointed at Clint. “No. Barton, you are not allowed in here.” “Why not?” “Because.” “Because why?” “Because of me, I think. Hi, I’m Casey. I’m a friend of Darcy’s.” Casey said, introducing herself. “The Casey who in high school, on the weekends would run around town sniping the local Mean Girls with a paintball gun?” “It was only one time! But yes, that’s me.” “Awesome! I’m Clint and I’ve been wanting to meet you since Darcy told us all of her high school stories.”

Casey turned to Darcy. “One, Hawkeye has been wanting to meet me and you never told me and two, WHAT stories have you told them?” “All of them.” “All of them?” “Yep.” “I hate you so much right now.”

I love the 2012 turtles and their designs they’re so fucking adorable but also it’s very important to establish they’re adorable because they’re like weird bugs to me. rewatching les mis 2012 for the first time in a while the 2 second shot where grantaire notices enjolras sitting down next to him as he’s taking a swig and he forgets about the bottle as he finishes his sip and just stares at enj with so much love and wonder, so caught off guard, so entranced. the shot of grantaire after that where he does that little sigh and in that expression you can see all of his thoughts and all of his doubts and all his hopeless certainty about the revolution. george blagden you are everything.

it’s a sharp learning curve

truly the most egregious part of the 2012 Les Mis is that they changed Valjean’s line from

“It’s the story of those who always loved you, your mother gave her life for you then gave you to my keeping.”

to

“it’s the story, of one who turned from hating. The man who only learned to love when you were in his keeping.”

LIKE?????!! How dare they remove Valjean specifically mentioning Fantine’s sacrifice and putting that before he mentions his own part in the story?? How dare they make Valjean imply that it was only when Cosette came into his keeping that he stopped hating everything and learned to love WHEN THE FUCKING BISHOP IS THE REASON FOR THE GODDAMN SEASON????

Like OF COURSE Cosette softened Valjean, of course he became a better man when he became her father, of course their relationship is important.

But this story would not have happened without the love of the bishop and it was his love that rekindled the love that was dormant in Valjean’s heart. And it was Fantine that fanned that flame, then Cosette’s that kept it steady.

I just hate how flat it makes Valjean’s story seem. “It’s the story, of those who always loved you.” Is THE answer Cosette has been searching for her whole life. I wish they’d kept it in instead of feeling like the audience would only feel fulfilled by Valjean’s story if he only mentioned his direct relationship to Cosette.

Whatever idk. It’s a good Les Mis for a lot of reasons, but a bad one for a lot of reasons too 🥲

You know what's not a hot take and actually really dumb? Saying that people who are invested in the love story in The Hunger Games are just as bad at the Capitol. A lot has already been said about this to show just how dumb of a statement that is, but I want to add something I haven't seen talked about. And that's how the people of the districts were just as taken by the love story as the Capitol. They just understood the gravity of the Games and saw Katniss and Peeta's love as a successful rebellion against the Capitol, which inspired them as well. Katniss acting like a girl driven to madness with love doesn't dissuade the rebellion at all, and in fact she figures Snow put her up to it during the Victory Tour to distract her rather than as a tactic that would actually dissuade the rebellion.

We get little direct contact with the people of the rebellion, but one of the times we get it, during the visit to the hospital in D8, this is what Katniss narrates:

Despite his controversial interview with Caesar, many ask about Peeta, assure me that they know he was speaking under duress. I do my best to sound positive about our future, but people are truly devastated when they learn I've lost the baby. I want to come clean and tell one weeping woman that it was all a hoax, a move in the game, but to present Peeta as a liar now would not help his image.

For the people in the districts, their romance is real, the hope of these two rebels bringing new life to Panem is real, and its loss is a devastation. Are you going to tell me that these people who are literally dying for the rebellion are just as bad as the people from the Capitol?

So the people who compare those who are interested in the romance in THG to the people in the Capitol, get better critical judgement. The fans I've seen who are invested in the romance are far more akin to how the people of the districts feel about Katniss and Peeta. We love their love because it is a rebellion against the Capitol. It is what sparks the rebellion and inspires people to start fighting back against their oppression. And we the readers know everything from Katniss's perspective (which neither the Capitol nor the districts had access to) and there is still every reason in the world to ship these two characters because they looked at what the Capitol was trying to make them do and at every turn and said "I'm choosing my humanity over submission to you." And they did that together every single time.
