okay, but, like, THAT'S how you do a villain story. in the FIRST scene, you watch him shoot a man in cold blood. the show tells you right away "this man is not a good man".

but then it gets you to sympathize - look at how much the world has stepped on him. look at how terrible the whole of gotham is. and even when he kills more people, does more terrible things, you still root for him. because it's fun to watch someone be terrible to terrible people. you root for sofia too, because if anyone deserves revenge its her, but you're rooting for both of them somehow.

and then the show tells you "when he was a boy he killed his brothers". but even still, you want to see what he'll do. the show is called the penguin, you want to see the penguin rise. when he lets his mother's finger almost get cut off, you pity him. he's a sad, broken thing. how could he be anything but bad? but he loves, so there must be something else there.

but then. but THEN

the show always told you: "this is the devil". but you thought, maybe the devil can make hell a little more bearable for some people. the devil is so often nuanced, sympathetic, complex. maybe he's like that.

you're wrong. there's nothing good within him and YOU rooted for him to succeed. you wanted to watch the destruction. and now you have to live with the consequences of thinking, even for a second, that he could be redeemed.

Next week is Cherry Magic's last episode and I'd like a suggestion as to what to watch next. Since last year I've watched some shows that I've enjoyed to different degrees. So far I've vibed more with the Japanese ones and only have watched two Thai shows: step by step and cherry magic.

1 Until We Meet Again (YouTube)

UWMA is, without question, a work of narrative genius with a powerful and cohesive romantic backbone and stellar performances. It is (to date) the only Thai BL that I’ve rated a 10/10 predominantly on the basis of story structure. That said it is also very well cast (and it’s a BIG cast), with solid production values, and enduring pair branding and a softness and complexity that should appeal for a JBL stan. More of my feels on this on here.

2 I Feel You Linger in the Air (iQIYI or grey)

I truly loved this time travel romance. IFYLITA is an exquisite BL, from filming techniques to narrative framework (much like Until We Meet Again). Steeped in history and family drama it edges into lakorn AKA soap opera. This is an elegant and classy BL… from Thailand which normally doesn't even try for classy. The main couple (both as a pair and individuals) were excellent, particularly Bright (Yai) whose eye-work acting style is a personal favorite of mine. Pity about the ending. Oh it wasn’t that sad but it wasn’t great either. However, JBL isn't noted for sticking the landings either. Full review and discussion here.

3 My Ride (Gaga)

Thai BL grew up with this little pulp (the first ever to make my end of year top 10). It’s a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine (AKA a cinnamon roll couple) plus mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi driver in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede, the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. Full review.

My caveat with this one is, like Step by Step, it is a Thai pulp which mean production values will not be up to Japan's standards. So if you bounce hard off the style of the first few 2 eps, it doesn't get better, so drop it and move on.

4 A Tale of Thousand Stars (YouTube)

With great casting and cinematography this drama nods at BL tropes but manages to elevate them (and itself) with a strong mature story concept about a spoiled rich kid who gets a heart transplant and becomes a rural teacher in order to pay out survivor’s guilt. On the way he falls in love with a local park ranger and contends with his own classism and escapist tendencies. Everyone seemed to perfectly suit their roles and GMMTV made the most out of its stable. Combined with excellent production (and post production) values, 1000 Stars is without question GMMTV’s most mature, charming, and smart BL series. I think it should go down as one of the top BLs of all time. I feel safe recommending this one to friends and non BL watchers.

5 He's Coming to Me (YouTube)

Boy and ghost boy fall in love, must solve ghost’s murder. Peak pining but also pretty tame, features my favorite sweet but important coming out sequence. The third in my precious triumvirate of unbeatable Thai BLs, that are only nominally BL because the story, acting, and production values are so good. (others are UWMA & 1k*)

You don't mention any PNR or high concept, but I still think it's worth giving this one a try.

6 Moonlight Chicken (YouTube)

I enjoyed this complicated little show, even though it’s spectacularly messy gay with lots of shrapnel and authentic pain. I thought the leads (EarthMix from 1k*) turned in their most compelling performance to date. But it was GeminiFourth (My School President) who stole my heart. That said, the most interesting central relationship was that of Jim & Li Ming, their father-son angst mixed with evident affection made me tear up. This was more slice of life than it was BL, but it ended happily so I’m not mad at it. Full review here.

It's not as soft as you like, but you might try it anyway, because it is Very Good.

A note if you watch this and enjoy GeminiFourth, you could try their BL, My School President. I chose not to explicitly rec it to you because it's VERY Thai Bl with lots of comedy and slapstick, and you named prestige JBL and KBL (which are the anthesis of this). Taht said, MSP has no more or less than Japan's Cherry Magic, so you might enjoy it.

7 Make a Wish (grey)

An odd pull but I'm going with it. This PNR (from noted Y-novelist Sammon - Manner of Death & Triage) about a doctor who can see the dead and strikes a bargain with a wish-granting irreverent tree angel - naturally they fall in love. The Thai afterlife is incredibly bureaucratic but I enjoyed the premise and the unfolding of the story (it’s not predictable but still satisfying and with nice little twist). I like that the doctor is just gay af and has a fag hag bestie and everything. The cast is excellent but the comedic stylings could feel too overblown and tonally off. (But again no more than something like Japan's Cherry Magic.) It had sad parts and did make me cry but is ultimately happy with a great sex scene, good smiley kisses, and all the agency.

8 Bed Friend (YouTube -cut version, iQIYI - v high heat)

You didn't name My Personal Weatherman (a great high heat JBL from last year) but if you want to try some Thai-style high heat, this is your best bet. Office frienamies transition a flaming hot one night stand into a f-buddy relationship that is built on a puppy/cat dynamic (and kinks into it at one point). Our puppy is loyal, smitten, and protective with endlessly longing eyes, while our cat is snarky, prickly, and deeply damaged (ALL THE TRIGGERS). NetJames give lovely high-heat with excellent chemistry and tuned-in performances of surprising depth, the story ultimately fails them at little as it waffles and went off the rails. But that's a Thai BL thing. Full review here.

9 The Eclipse (YouTube)

This is a good show but the cast is excellent and the leads are absolutely flawless, which elevates it beyond just good. We got a nuanced and multifaceted burgeoning relationship: philosophical (and socio-political) conflict contrasted to moments of empathy; flirtation contrasted to moments of genuine affection, plus plenty of angst. This narrative is less about love than it is about courage and tenderness. However, near the end the pacing was off and the plot frustrating. Still, this is an enjoyable watch, with a finale that features verbal consent and a fun blooper reel.

10 Love By Chance (YouTube)

Okay I dithered a lot over this last one and finally chose this. Because in an intro to Thai BL you should have at least one trail by fire and that's bound to be a MAME offering.

AePete’s meet cute is one of the best ever put on screen. They are just so genuine and soft with each other, it’s hard not to love them from the first moment. All the best Thai BL tropes deployed (and there are a lot of them) are earned honestly by the narrative, including the seme/uke dynamic (such as it is). The characters are unique as this is a poor/rich pairing, where Ae is tough & scrappy, caring & protective, and probably demisexual, while Pete is timid, shy, lonely, and out gay (with his peers). The language is also glorious with Pete using formal (even old fashioned) register, while Ae is entirely rude. You can train your ear for Thai high & low registers with this show (in fact, it's why I started learning them). As surrounding characters point out, they shouldn't work together, and yet they're very much wonderful when they are together.

HOWEVER: You watch LBC for the mains, ignore the sides (trigger warnings), and don't bother with any of the follow ups and you'll be fine. AePete will remain in your heart for a really long time. They are still one of my all time favorite couples. Also (still) two of the Thai BL industry's most famous actors.

For those who are wondering, yes the last contender was, indeed, Bad Buddy. But I chose LBC purely on the basis of softness.

Minecraft Random Item Challenge VS 2 Hunters my Beloved!!

Like you V, I fricking love this video. The Drama, the unintentional thematic items, the situational comedy, (the story fic potential)!!

The video starts off with pretty standard stakes, Sapnap and George vs Dream. An unfair match, but no one’s upset, the audience knows how easily Dream can turn the tables if the circumstances turn juuust right. And despite what the title says, Dream is a Hunter like Sapnap and George. They all only have one life, and are fighting to the death.

But then, not even 5 min in, the power levels get completely skewed. George and Sapnap both receive diamond weapons and George gets a diamond chestplate, and Dream gets his iconic turtle helmet. Suddenly, the fight becomes a chase, and Dream has to run for his life until a new item spawns in to even the tides. (He finds a ruined portal underwater, and inside its chest is a flint and steel.)

Dream then gets some good armor and a trident, and the dynamics change once again.

The video kind of takes a turn for the comedic here. It’s a 2v1, yet Dream becomes the aggressor. He’s starts initiating fights, the one who chases down Sapnap and George with his dozen tridents, and it’s the duo who begins running off, building up a tower to get away. And this goes on even when George gets netherite boots and chest plates, and Sapnap gets an elytra and rockets; they still mostly engage in guerrilla tactics to basically harass Dream. Dream literally begins yelling at them to come here and fight him.

And that tickles me so much because this is basically a culmination of how the manhunts conditioned George and Sapnap to treat Dream; a guy who’ll prevail against all odds.

And this over precaution is what ultimately does them in in the end. It gave Dream enough time and space to prepare a TNT trap that kills them all.

Man, it’s such a fun video. I didn’t even mention all the little moments between everyone, like “OH GEORGE” “IT’S OH SAPNAP!”, “You have better stuff than us” “Pff—how?”, “George, I know you can’t drive but you need to do a u-turn baby”; and how the items eventually gained a theme with each hunter, creating a pseudo narrative of a sky spirit and rock/metal spirit harassing a sea spirit. It’s such a good mix of tense competition, and silly fun.

Minecraft Hostage Simulator

Another 2v1 video but also a muffinteers video! This one is such a classic for me, I genuinely hope they revisit this one.

The gradual development of Bad becoming a complete menace. The long trek of the horn passing between George and Sapnap and eventually to Bad. That hilarious point in the Nether where the two beat the shit out of Bad while he hangs off the cliff as retaliation. Dream embracing his inner trickster archetype, setting a deal with Bad with specific conditions to loophole around them. Sapnap and George pulling off that incredible boat trick and snatching Bad from Dream. Dream getting murdered by dolphins, a complete turnaround from their usual grace. The dynamic shifting midway in the video to a 3v1 when the Hunters decide to work together to Get Bad.

And that epic fight/chase after the Nether!!! Oh My God!!

The improvisation, the lying, the music with the chase, the buildup of tension from the editing! The sudden introduction of the reason behind Bad being a hostage was that he’s a sacrifice to feed the dragon?!?! Chefs kiss. Incredible ten out of ten.

Again, I hope this video comes back but with a way for Bad to win. He was literally the star of this show.

You're expecting to see cracked vials of genetic material, crushed electrical equipment, reams and reams of paper cataloging a genetic sequence, maybe. Instead you see the sleeve of a sweater and a burst tube of leaking toothpaste. There's a few pairs of boxers strewn in the road, little personal odds and ends littered around.

ALSO ALSO, I love how you did the new fight system. It's so much better than the old one, because it was annoying when you wanted to do something but couldn't because you didn't choose the right genome/parts. This system feels more fair imo. I enjoyed so much the comments about our powers/enhancements. It really makes each character we play as feel unique and totally different. I was surprised how much attention to detail you had when it comes to our powers. Of course, if I'm bored and see a fast food I'd want to look at what people ordered using my supervision. There are many little moments like that which add up and make the game a much better experience. It signals to a player that our choices actually matter and do impact the story, which is something that doesn't happen as often as it should in interactive fiction. Even though this is just the demo, I see a lot of potential. More general life stuff, Good luck with your internship this year. Try not to overwork yourself and remember to take rests. I started reading a lot of their fanfics in 2014 in my own language (Brazilian Portuguese) but currently there aren't many stories lol but I wasn't much of a shipper, I just liked reading stories, I think I started to like it on the show more after rewaching OS...especially Jotho (it was from power and play - Blacky! Battle During a Dark Night!! I think, and Diamomd and Pearl when they appear for 2 episodes) Oh well, there's all of Kanto and Jotho in Portuguese by an old Fansub from 2006 until 2018, that even subtitled Black and White, but he didn't finish Battle Frontier (the only one, actually) so another Fansub is taking it to finish it.

Also, where in the anime did you start shipping them? If it's a separate post, can you send a link so if as not to repeat the question If you have already answered a similar question, but changed your mind about something or have something new, you can add it

A very interesting post about Zensho if you intend to read it unfortunately it is an almost lost media...It's very difficult to get a physical copy and the translation that is available is not accurate according to the translator himself but it's still fun to read (it's one of my favorites) It seems like a mix of fidelity to the Red and Blue games with elements from the main anime, but factual differences between the characters' stories. Mainly more stuff about Oak/Shigeru's family I think it could be incorporated into Gary's character or not, I think that's up to people.

I think Shigeru's jealous relationship over Satoshi winning multiple times is funny, but there's a good reason behind it and the conclusion is adorable so I'm okay with it.

I wish more people knew Zensho because their dynamic is precious to me.

I actually don't read Palletshipping fanfics often or even..at all.., But I do reccomends finding some at AO3, good shit there, I've seen really good mandarin shigesato fics actually, can't remember who wrote it..

Story time, I used to be a Gousato shipper actually.. (but for some reason when I saw the episode where Gary was coming back I was so excited and shit, mind you, I've never watched much pokemon anime prior to this, And the only pokemon anime I watched clips of was XY and black and white and yet the episode Gary came back I was jumping up and down.) I was in a relationship with a Gou kin back then but ya know some things never last.. just this year! I started to realize how much I actually truly liked shigesato (new year new me I guess.) I've always had liked it during my gousato phase (infact if I never invited that Gou kinnie to a RP server I used to be in I think It would've been a shigesato simp earlier lmao.) and once me and that old Gou kinnie started falling out I started to consume for Gary content and watching the original gen 1 anime and... That's when my storage space died bc I started downloading full videos and images.. teehee

Also that's a shame, hope someone in the fandom could find a link or something for the manga, I haven't had the time to research or find it yet so.. also I'm def drawing all 3 Gary versions one day, with all the blues...or green..or..glue..hhheheheh.... I want KitKat

oh yea def grian has control issues lol, i’m kind of the scar to my friends grian, which is why our dynamic works so well. grian would hate feeling his hand was forced. my more romantic inclinations would incline me to believe it was fate! destiny to meet someone with a magnetic charm that enslaves my heart, and that fate is what makes it true. grian would also hate that reading, cause it seems the only thing he dislikes more than losing control is following established destiny lol i think an honest conversation between the two would help. if scar is fae aligned it might help that he can’t lie, and if grian can get him to speak in plain words without twisting, that could help grian feel an element of control over the situation.

i feel like the charm element freaks him mostly cause it’s cards hidden up another’s sleeve, he doesn’t mind they’re going to cheat- he cheats as well- but not knowing which cards they’re adding to their deck is the part that frustrates his mind, not knowing what part of the deck is true and which is fake. that would drive him insane lol. a lot of control i find is about uneven playing fields. rlly interesting thought experiment i’m obsessed with where this au may go, i love charm based magic hehe

yesss exactly this. he'd absolutely hate it and it'd drive him crazy. even if scar loves him back, it's like— he's not doubting scar's feelings, he just keeps feeling caged because what if scar made him like him back? what if it wasn't his own choice at all? what if it had nothing to do with him, all of it in the hands of someone else, an outside influence?

and it's an awful thought. grian feels that love towards scar so vividly; it's so real, and that's what makes it hurt. he just starts to doubt himself, his own perception, his own feelings. he needs his free will, and he needs a proof that it is free, no tricks. no outside choices made for him. nothing to pin him down and hold authority and power over him.

he wants to have gotten here, to this place where he feels warmth when scar's near, all on his own.

but... he didn't get there all on his own, did he? scar was there with him, every step of the way.

it's convoluted, in a way that really frustrates grian. he wants scar to put his cards down, face-up. he wants to see them clearly. he wants to know that they're not false, or magicked to appear different to him, or—

he doesn't know how to solve it. and of course he tries all on his own, at first, until it really wears him down. until he's absolutely miserable, feeling that constant pull to scar and the resistance towards it, just in case it was planted there to sway him.

then, they talk.

and i think that first conversation isn't very coherent at all. i think it's actually pretty messy. maybe grian says something wretched like, "i don't know if i love you", and. yeah. not the best word choice?

but it's a start. and they're going to have many more conversations in the wake of this disaster.

1. Growing up, there was always a part of me that didn't believe that the media I consumed was gonna affect my morals. I always liked power dynamics and age gaps and even when I was on the Anti side, I never agreed fully with what they said. So I would always try and find anti videos that would validate what I specifically liked. But then one day, few months ago, I was scrolling on YouTube and I got a recommendation from a YouTuber I had subbed too. He rarely posted so I clicked on it right away and it was a video about how he liked a tennicallly kinda cringe show that sexualize underaged girls and monsters. He, his friends, and his girlfriend would watch it every week when a new episode went out. Than he went in about why some people hated certain shows for having adult themes such as Goblin Slayer opening with a rape scene unlike another show that did the same thing. Then it ended with a long sit down talk about how you can like whatever show you want no matter the themes because it doesn't affect how you act in real life and that was the moment where I was like 'Oh. I just watched a Pro ship video and agreed with it.'

2. Gosh where do I start with Slime Boy. I love his voice so much. People say his mic is bad, I can understand him fine. I love his singing voice, I love how he's arguably the most simple design in the show yet he manages to stand out so easily. I love how relaxed he always is. He is def coded to be high all the time. I love his skeleton costume because it blessed me with this picture:

What made you ship it? Once again mostly their dynamics and dudebroship! I think I started shipping them somewhere along the line of them playing cs go together and building their secret base on the dsmp. I just loved how they work and bantered together.

What are your favorite things about the ship? So much honestly. I love how they can fight and bicker one moment and then go back to being best friends a few seconds after. I love how they always have each other's backs when it matters, when they need a confidence boost or some reassurance. Punz has this way of getting a lil silly goofy to hype Sapnap up when he's low energy and I adore it. I also love how a lot of times, even with Punz being older and usually more chill and mature, it feels like they're equals and know each other well enough to stay on equal footing, something that I often try to portray in my aus. Oh and the size dif... yeah... the size dif def makes me go a bit feral <3

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? Not really? I guess I don't really like when they're written to have a super sub/dom power dynamic personalitywise just cuz Sap is younger and smaller? I don't mind power dynamics for intimate or vulnerable scenes, but I usually lose interest if their whole personalities are being portrayed as supper subby and the other super dom, something that I've def seen from time to time in this ship. But to each their own! I don't mind it too much, I just stop reading if it makes me uninterested XD

TOH AU!!

Quints a human who magically ends up in the Boiling Isles (to be determined exactly how he gets there) and wants to learn magic because. of course he does. He's overall fascinated by the coven system but also just how magic in general works. He falls into the care of (you'll never believe it) Yursl!! I don't know if she'd be something different than the owl lady, but the owl lady would be cool because imagine Johnny Steve as Hooty or something 😭

I don't know if there'd be a "King" in this au since it's technically just if the tlkoe kids were inside the TOH universe, and it's not necessarily a "Quint is Luz" or "___ is King" AU. Quint IS kind of like Luz but their motives for learning magic are slightly different, and besides Yursl being a bit of an insert of Eda, that's kinda where it ends. (watch me contradict this in like two seconds) Mainly what I'm trying to say is that this storyline doesn't follow either the toh or tlkoe cannon ones to a tee, but still has elements of both

Jack is in the Illusion Track, but I feel like later on he would start to dabble in Abomination (since it's the closest thing to his zombie powers). He's still an orphan lmao, and lives at the Boiling Isles Orphanage. He transfers to Hexide from another school about a year previous to Quint's arrival. He comes across a poorly disguised Quint who was on a supply run for Yursl, and is absolutely AMAZED by him. The boys get along immediately and begin to hang out. Jack then tries to convince Quint to enroll in Hexide, which Quint finally does later in the future. Jacks Palisman would def be Rover, who, when not in palisman form, can (maybe,idk) switch between the normal palisman size and normal Rover Size.

For June, I'd say she'd be In Abomination or Beast Keeping. I say Abomination because 1: it's cool, and 2: Blasty could be like the spiky abomination glove Amity does in Eclipse Lake when fighting against Hunter. June wouldn't keep it on as near often as she does with Blasty in the books, but she would bring it out for fights. And if she WAS in Abomination, she'd be able to help out Jack when he starts to get into it (again, doesn't follow the tlkoe canon). She's still head of the Newspaper Club, and her Palisman would be Neon

Dirk is easily the Plant Track. He COULD be Construction, but idk I just see Plant more. Imagine him doing the Plant/Whip thing Willow does in the beginning of "Any Sport in a Storm." Almost like how he was into lassoing and cowboy stuff in Book Three (I wanna say three) His palisman is Drooler!!

So basically, how everyone would meet:

Quint arrives at Hexide under the disguise of a regular witch with Jack's help. (Quint pretends to be a witch during the entrance exam, in which he barely scrapes by. Obviously this only makes him more determined) Jack brings Quint to the newspaper room (since jack is still in the newspaper) and introduces him to the club. Quint catches Junes attention cause Quint sucks at lying and she can tell somethings up. She doesn't pry into it then and there, but still keeps it in her mind. At Lunch, June talks to Dirk. Dirk and June are friends; they have sort of a sibling dynamic and confine in each other. Dirks not really a bully per say, but he still gets into trouble and June's always there to get him out of it. (As she'll do with the rest of the group, until later when she unmasks a bit and gets a lil silly too) June proposes her theory to Dirk, and of course, she's right. At first, Dirk's like "You're ridiculous", but then he REALLY starts to look at Quint and thinks it may be possible. They both decide to look into it and go full sleuth mode- or rather June does and Dirk enables it- and find out that Quint is, in fact, a human. Chaos ensues.

"You're HUMAN??"

"Uh- yes."

"I knew it!! Dirk, see, I told you-"

"June. Not the time. "

"Right, sorry."

More Chaos- June and Dirk both swear not to tattle, but uh oh! Someone else overhears the conversation and gives the principle (tbd) the headsup. All four of them are called to the office and interrogated, before Quint's disguise falls apart and they make a run for it. Like in "I was a teenage abomination", the school goes on lock down and the gang has to use their magic to get them through the school and out the exit. After all is said and done, they don't really go like "we should be friends!" but rather they start hanging out with one another more, and soon they're thick as thieves and getting themselves into all sorts of shenanigans.

(Quint is still allowed to stay at Hexide, but he tries to stall getting assigned into a coven for as long as he can. This half-works because since there's no inspector like there was in "The First Day", there's not really a need for him to pick a track immediately.)

sofia, my love! sorry it took me so long to respond, i had a busy day yesterday, but i'm back! this is gonna be longggg, so i put it under a cut!!

absjsjk, i do read a lot of queer comics, but lemme let you in on my secret. when i first started to get into manga/manhwa/manhua, i just started reading what sounded interesting or was well reviewed, but i kept coming across really bad ones that just grossed me out. then i think it was when cherry blossoms after winter premiered that i was wayyyy too impatient to wait for the next ep, so when i saw on mdl that ppl really liked the manhwa, i decided to read it and ended up binging the whole thing that night. i ended up noticing that unlike thai shows that are based on sometimes v shitty novels, j-bls and k-bls are usually adaptations of pretty good manga/manhwa. so from then on, i kept my ear to the ground and the moment an adaptation of a manga/manhwa got announced, i'd read it. and lemme tell you, this has worked much better than looking for things to read on my own. much less icky stuff.

so yeah, blupdate2020 announced back in, like, may that minato shoji koinrandori was gonna get a live action adaptation and i immediately read the manga. it is b&w, still ongoing, and honestly i don't recommend it unless you have nothing else to read, it's probably the worst one of the adapted mangas i've read, but it's also not bad. shin is 17 at the start of the manga and they never specify akira's exact age as far as i can remember, but if i do the math he's 27-28, so the ages are def super iffy. luckily akira's not predatory, in fact it could be argued that shin's the predatory one with the way he pursues him. but if you put the weird teenage thoughts of sex aside, their friendship is quite cute and sweet. all of the manga adaptations that i've seen so far have been very faithful to the original source, with just a few changes here and there (usually elimination of sexual language/scenes), so i doubt minato's laundromat will be too different from the manga, but would probably be much more wholesome, which def helps with the iffiness. i watched the first ep and they aged up shin to be a senior rather than a junior, so that helps? a bit? but minus points bc akira objectifies shin upon meeting him more than he did in the manga. ngl, it was weird. besides that, it's exactly the same but more wholesome. shin is much smilier and just less..... weird, absjsj. so yeah, i think it'll be a cute watch with an iffy premise that i trust them to handle well.

as for recs, i def have plenty, most of which are shows you've probably seen. i've only ever read b&w manga, so all these recs are manhwa/manhua.

it's no secret that i'm a huuuuge fan of who can define popularity?, the source material of blueming. i hiiiiighly recommend it, especially if you enjoyed blueming. it's actually quite different from the adaptation, but both have their pros and cons that make it impossible for me to say which is better. da un's whole deal is expanded upon much more, the sapphics get more development, and do ba woo gets a whole storyline and love interest. i also highly recommend cherry blossoms after winter. i'd say the drama is better, but the manhwa is more in depth and practically the same, so it's a good read! it is explicit though and like always the sex scenes are heteronormative and sometimes kinda uncomfy, but if you skip them like i do, it doesn't ruin it. the same goes for love tractor, which is getting an adaptation supposedly later this year. also a little iffy with ages, but v sweet and has a fun dynamic of v buff and manly country boy with a heart of gold and a damaged city boy musician. outside of adapted source material, there's a manhua i enjoyed called 30 sui nanzi wuyu or the secret tales of a 30 year old gay bachelor. honestly, i don't remember much about this one besides the main character and his brother being rich ceo kinda guys, but i know i enjoyed it. and i'm currently reading the ongoing translation of yeouleul guhaejwo or fall for me!, which is so far v unproblematic and is fun bc it's fantasy! the main character is possessed by a gumiho and gets close to the only guy not attracted to him in an effort to get rid of it.

for gl stuff, i do have to look on my own, but so far i haven't found any bad ones, so that's good! my absolute favorite is a manhua called jintian de ta yeshi ruci keai or my darling is the cutest. it breaks down a bunch of stereotypes and tropes, tackles some hard issues like child abuse, has a fantastic ensemble of queer characters, and is just v v sweet. it's ongoing at 122 chapters. the rest of the gl comics i’ve read so far are actually just webcomics and not manga/manhwa/manhua, but they’re still v good! kiss it goodbye is a very cute slice of life set in japan (but actually in english and made by an italian artist) that is complete and ends very well. i’m only five chapters in, but i’m really enjoying the girlfriend project, which is a fake dating story! and the ongoing mermaid x witch comic the sweetness of salt is beautiful and very sweet. i keep making the mistake of reading comics that end up being ongoing and then forgetting about them while i wait for updates, so idk much about these, but i’m also reading rainbow!, she’s a keeper, and waiting for the release of zhui lan or falling blue.

thoughts on todays releases?

OKAY I'm a bit behind on a few books so I don't have commentary for everything but to go over what I did get a chance to read [spoilers ahead!!!!]

Aquaman: The Becoming #4 - Admittedly I've been going into this book with very little knowledge of recent goings on with any of the characters, so it's been a lot of just taking things at face value (which is def different than me approaching Bat comics where I may notice inconsistencies with recent things more) but I thought the lore stuff about Jackson's mom today was really interesting. I'm not the biggest fan of the 'surprise sibling' trope which was how the last issue ended, but it is nice having like, his mom as part of this so we know yes Delilah is in fact his sister it's not a fake-out or anything, and seeing how that plays out. I also just... love complicated family dynamics, so this is interesting and tense in a way that appeals to me. I'm curious how Lucia's side of the story might differ though based on how she said Meeka was twisting things.

Detective Comics #1046 - WE LOVE TO SEE STEPH REFERRING TO HERSELF AS BATGIRL! Like I know she is officially one of 'The Batgirls' but getting to see her use the singular 'Batgirl' for herself just... feels so good. Also getting to see her interact with Helena! We love purple girls, and just the way Steph is always trying to help. In general Helena's stuff in the 'tec run has been really interesting so far, the visions as a lingering side effect from the Vile stuff is really cool and I'm glad they've kept it going. I'm super looking forward to Shadows of the Bat also, which this kinda helped move pieces into position for that since it starts next issue. While I do think that the concept of Arkham Tower- putting a version of Arkham in the middle of the city- is just absurd in so many ways (when I first mentioned to my mom that was a thing she burst out laughing because how the hell does anyone in-universe think that's a good idea) I'm still really curious to see how it's all gonna play out.

DC Vs. Vampires #3 - Hal basically being just the [gunshot warning in video] Eric Andre: Who Killed Hannibal? meme about Barry's death has been too funny ever since the preview dropped. Overall I'm so along for the ride with this, it's just vampire chaos. ALSO ZATANNA.... QUEEN.... queen. Adore her design here. The ending was a fun thing too, I think Hal & Diana choosing Bruce of all people to frame for Barry's murder is gonna be a fascinating choice when we get to the start of the next issue, just seeing the discussion that brings. The guy with the biggest thing against killing being framed. It's bold. Daring. OH also Dinah, Roy & Ollie having their little group... love it. Like last issue we saw the Bats together as a family unit so I'm glad we can see other hero families having a similar idea.

Robin #9 - We love the power of friendship and teamwork! Truly embracing the shonen anime vibe of this whole run so far. Alfred's ghost's presence in the book has been something I've loved so far, and the way he was used in this issue I especially liked. Altho I really dislike Rose being like 'stop flirting!!!' when Damian and Flatline just talk to each other like sgdfhgfh they will just be having a normal conversation and everyone's like 'ugh get a ROOM' like. I'm tired. I hope that stops soon, because otherwise I do really like Flatline & her interactions with Damian. I don't even mind it being a romantic thing between them (like, Damian's 14 now, that's when Tim was having all sorts of romance plots back in his Robin solo) but having others comment on it that way makes it feel forced when there is an interesting dynamic forming there that doesn't need that. Also the ending was such a cool OH SHIT moment I'm so so so curious to see where things pick up with that next issue, and how he's gonna get back to the present/what new things about Ra's he's gonna find out in the past.

Task Force Z #3 - Bringing up Jason's thoughts about killing in direct relation to Alfred's death? Which provides some reasoning that actually... makes his choice to stay away from killing for the time being make a bit more sense for him, connecting it to his own guilt and loss? Then having Hanna suggest he forgive Bane for what he did... and him at the first available opportunity where he knew it'd actually mean something basically saying 'fuck forgiveness' and pushing Bane off a building for what he did to Alfred? Telling his higher-ups that Bane's gone- attempting to ensure that he won't get more Lazarus Resin to come back to life so essentially trying to re-kill him? HELL. YEAH. (solicits for future issues do let us know that Bane's def not staying dead, but hey, Jason tried) Again, I wouldn't have gone down this 'no killing no guns' path with Jason in the first place, I still don't like it as a general direction, but this is at least going down that path in an interesting way. We love revenge, revenge is a very Jason thing. Also the ending! I really hadn't been thinking all that much about who Crispin might be so him actually being Two-Face was a fun reveal. In hindsight, the pair of twin scientists was probably a clue. Like we knew he'd be involved in the book from solicits for future issues but this wasn't the way I expected it.

Teen Titans Academy #10 - So as a whole, I've definitely thought the strongest parts of this book have been focusing on the new students/new characters, and this issue had some Dane & Red X stuff that I thought was at least like, interesting. Dane saying his father is 'The Dark Lord'/Dane being called the Antichrist plus his physical similarities to how DC's Lucifer has been depicted (especially with his wings now like. come on) is just making me 👀 like are they gonna namedrop him? And of course, there's the main reason I'm still reading this book, I am curious what the deal is with Red X. I liked him in this issue being less of the just mysterious shadowy figure and a lot more of a vulnerable kid, plus him choosing not to leave Dane when he could have. I really didn't like the bits with the senior Titans in this issue though, idk. As a whole them being teachers and shit in the first place still feels so weird to me, it's super just not my ideal dynamic for a version of the Titans. All the 'Mr.' and 'Ms.' usage with their hero names just sounds so silly every time. The bit I disliked the most though was Roy misgendering Stitch like.... I get the reasoning, Roy only just got there and hasn't really met them before this moment, but hghghgghhh just didn't like it!! Did not think it was necessary.

I wanted to ask something, since I really like your naruto opinions! I've been thinking about shikatema a lot, since I found out they have a three year age gap. I've noticed it being talked about more, since apparently a lot of people don't know that fact. It's weird for me personally that when he was 15, temari would have been 18 already and even though they got together when shikamaru was older than that, it feels iffy? I don't know, what do you think?

i found out about that recently too anon 

tbh i think kishimoto really wasn’t clear about the ages before for one thing. like i always thought temari was two years older than the rookie 9–like i assumed gaara was 12 kankurou was 13 and temari was 14–but then all these years later it’s like oh no she was actually 3 years older, like when did that happen???? and like i def had some mixed feelings about that too. especially cause i always include shikatema as background in my fics, and more specifically i was upset about it for my hs au which i’d had started like a year or so before i found out about this so when i learned that i was like… oh wait.. that’s not so good. usually they’re adults when i write them but obvs hs au is well high school so it’s a very different sort of thing being 17 and 20 

so like finding out all these years later is weird cause like i’ve always shipped it cause it was obviously set up from the start and i rlly like their dynamic. it was like the only good endgame ship except then of course temari STILL got the awful angry mom/housewife treatment 

i think overall that it’s not an issue because they’re adults when they get together and obviously have known each other since they were both kids–they met when they were both young enough and obviously developed a friendship that i don’t think there’s actually that much of a issue–because the big thing with age differences is always the power imbalance like when we talk about someone 30 dating a 20 year old and why that raises red flags is cause there is a lack of equality there, there’s a lack of experience, a lack of freedom etc. but like 3 years isn’t a lot when you’re adults. it’s nothing tbh 

i personally don’t blame anyone for feeling weird about it in regards to them when they’re younger specifically if they were dating when she was 18 and he was 15. it’s kind of… ugh nebulous??? i guess??? like in terms of how age differences work with dating and shit, i think when you’re younger three years can potentially seem like a lot but in a lot of ways when you’re 18 and 15 it’s not actually that much of a difference in terms of your power and your experience. i think if they hadn’t known each other prior it would def be more weird to me. it’s like when someone is in high school and they date someone in a different grade–then they graduate and it’s like “oh now im an adult but i was… a child yesterday” 

so ultimately i don’t think it’s that weird or Actually Problematique™ like it’s not ped/ophilia by any stretch and there isn’t this HUGE power imbalance between them either. however that being said i think respecting why ppl are uncomfortable is important, like we have to be understanding that there are 18 year olds who do use being 18 as a means to prey on younger ppl, that there is potential for a power imbalance even if it’s not inherent–18 is by no means a grown ass adult but that doesn’t mean ppl uncomfortable with it are wrong to feel uncomfortable. from my perspective there are far worse things than two ppl with a slight age difference who’ve known one another since they were kids dating. again don’t think it’s Actually Bad, but i do think ppl’s boundaries should be respected

ultimately anon, if it makes you uncomfortable that’s okay and you shouldn’t feel bad for that. i think it’s about your own judgment and looking at the situation as unbiasedly as possibly. do i like the ship? yes. was i weirded out when i found that out? absolutely. did i sit down and think about it long and hard? yes. do i think that it’s unhealthy or wrong? no. they have a healthy, equal relationship, there isn’t a power imbalance, no one is taking advantage, they’ve known each other for years, and 3 years isn’t a big age difference. but that’s my perspective on it.
