Personal rant or some shit bc i just wanna get this out rn. yeeeee this will be long

So today i had a vit of a stressful day with uni n all bc ive been sick and admittedly lazy over the last week up til like tuesday and i had to turn in an Interpretation/essay tonight and prepare a group presentation for tmr (saturday seminars should b illegal but ok i literally chose this). N e way so ive been procrastinating like hell up until this morning so i didnt rly eat before showing up to seminar at 12am and afterwards i had to check with my one remaining presentation groupmember and finish the interpretation and tgen i had swordfighting class at 5. I didnt Really gave time for it but its fun and im very behind bc i misses several lessons already and am generally. Not good at it lol. n e way i turn up to swords and we peactice some routines ig and heres where the peoblem rly starts. Basically i am a huge crybaby, always have been (im older than firestar btw for context), esp when i feel criticized or yknow. Make mistakes or anything and since i was a sports h8er with 2 left feet n hands all my life n cried often during school pe bc i kept messing up n git embarrassed, it was an important step for me to sign up for this uni extracurricular swords class bc. Doing sth sporty in front of others tgat. Isnt very easy and i gotta learn from scratch is a bit out of my comfort zone. But normally its all v fun, im not good/easily the worst in class but thats ok i learn and move my body and talk to ppl! Proud of myself! Well today not so kuch, i noticed i was getting tense bc of not understanding how to do a movement and everyone (3 experienced fighters bc the main teacher was sick plus 2 other beginners that r learning faster than me) lookimg at me and trying to give helpful pointers and me still doing it wrong... H8 dis feeling bc i kinda freeze up instead of being able to take the tips n try again. Its hard for me to translate input like verbal instructions and demonstsations into my own movements as is. In this state i cant do anything properly and i feel the cryings abt to start while wanting nothing more than to MOVE ON NORMALLY. Well my eye started to get itxhy n teary so i excused myself to "take care of my contacts" (lie) (why am i even so ashamed that i feel i have to lie/make up excuses?? Bro???? That just made the situation Actually cringe?????? Im normally not an ashamed person and cryings just a state/expression but idk) so it was better for a bit until it wasnt. Then i full on cried in class while 2 ppl were actively showing me things/helping me do em right n everyone else kimda watched, kimda practiced. They did ask if i was ok and i said yes like a liar. So at the end of class i normally take the bus home with one of the other new guys but i today just didnt feel able to keep talking to him. So he also asked if i was ok/why i cried and i said i just do that under stress and why i am stressed (uni) so that was also a bit of a lie but only kinda. I said i was gonna go to the livrary instead (another lie, was gonna call my bf to calm me down abit n then take the next bus) so i did tgat n it kinda worked and this genius asked if i had eaten. Bruhhh of fuckin course im sensitive ive only had 3 baked goods all day and hadnt even noticed!!!!!! So then it all made sense, mans gotta get some freakin noursishment to keep their composure in swords class! So i went to another bus stop than normally bc i needed sth from the store and bruh the guy i normally take a DIFFERENT bus with is there (awkwardly votta tell hik i changed my mimd abt the library) and we talk a bit (i feel like i talk to him wayy too much in comparison to him, like we dont know each other that well at all, idek his real name and yknow. If he actually enjoys talking to me) and yea

but now wang ziyi has debuted despite all the rumours to bring him down and i can finally rest in peace

tbh i was expecting him too

he was so extra when he was called out lmaO

i sorta wanted xingjie to debut with him? but oh well :(

now im just sorta worried for you changjing haHA IDK WHY THE BANANA SQUAD ARE SO HORRIFIED OF hiM

Bonus: Now that IP has ended, I can finally focus on my studies until 9Percent makes a comeback. I initially thought it was gonna be a terrible rip-off but it turned out even better than P101 and I actually love all the trainees? Especially the top 35 bc these boys has made their way into my heart.

Also, im really relieved they debuted under the name 9Percent? Because names like Good9 or Balance are srsly rather horrible name and yall cannot do my boys dirty like that.

Tbh, i was sorta sad when xingjie and caoze didnt make the cut? They have shown such leadership and potential that its sort of a pity the group has only space for 9 and not 11 members.

My hearts also aches for Ruibin and Wenjun. They are such sweethearts and have really worked hard too. They werent given much screentime like the other popular ones, but I could see their passion and i really do hope I can see them again on a different stage.

Anyways, please do continue supporting the trainees as well as 9Percent!! (they legit gon be the first cpop band im gonna stan)

hello, hopefully you're doing well, but i was wondering: how do you not get burnt out? i have 3 upcoming quizzes this week, 2 projects and some essays due v soon that the stress overwhelms me a bit. im usually someone who can force themselves to hyper focus but honestly just wanted some help getting over the burn out and to keep going. ty in advance :)

hi!!! i think i recognize ur username from my old blog, but i can't be sure! after hearing your schedule, i hope you're doing well too! here are some things i've had to find out (usually the hard way) about avoiding burnout (+lots of tips of how i personally try to get over bad procrastination habits)

(fair warning: it's 12:23 am where im at rn and i took a tiny break to answer this, so if i seem all over the place, sorry!!!)

(edit: SO SORRY FOR THE LATE REPLY. i've been a very busy bee over the past couple of days BAHAHA)

break down your to do list! imagine you open up your planner or your checklist and you see so many assignments and due dates screaming at you. that sounds pretty stressful, right? what i personally like to do is just compartmentalize my tasks/break down my overall schedule or day into tiny, very do-able, less frightening bits and pieces. for some odd reason, my brain thinks breaking up one big assignment into various easy to do tasks makes it seem more manageable. it doesn't really help for quizzes, but for projects or some essays, here's what i would do:

i hope it makes some slight sense! for me, rather than viewing it as "omg i have a big ass essay to complete", it's much more manageable to think to myself "ok, let me just work on the intro first." in my silly little head, if i can just do the intro and get started/get one task done, then it's easier for me to get into a good groove. im feeling productive and happy with myself because yay, i finished a task! ALSO, im sure you already know this, but i highly, highly recommend you outline every essay and plan out your projects/presentations before you start jumping in. no matter how bare bones the outline seems, even merely jotting down a vague idea or a tiny note will help you establish a good enough starting point/provide you with something to go off of is incredibly beneficial. i cannot stress that enough.

the best way to not fall behind is to always try to stay ahead (don't procrastinate!!!) this is easier said than done. it also depends on your sense of urgency, haha. for many people, if it's not due today, then it can be saved for a later date. for my schedule, for example, i don't necessarily have that luxury. i could save my assignments til the day they're due or even the day before they are due, but that would cause an unnecessary amount of stress onto me because every single business prof at my university is notorious for making their stuff due on sundays. (i'll actually be posting my outlook calendar/planner pretty soon to explain my planning system!)

one trick that i don't necessarily recommend because it might end up tripping you up (which is the last thing i want to happen) is to just write in your planner or calendar that something is due a day or two before it actually is. for example, saying that your essay is due on the 25th when in all actuality, it's due on the 27th. either you'll end up getting your due dates screwed up or you'll just think to yourself "nah i know im playing mind games with myself, it's not actually due til later" so then there's no sense of urgency.

another trick is to remember that there is still some urgency even if something isn't necessarily due until later. judging from your schedule, you've got quite a bit on your plate as well. i don't want to send you into a panic, but the more you put off or refuse to work on something, the less time you'll have in the future to actually work on it. "i can do this tomorrow", "i'll do it in a couple hours", "i can come back to this later". chances are, if you're saying this, you need to remind yourself that you've most likely already used that excuse yesterday or the day before. if you feel like you can handle it mentally and physically (e.g. not tired), i would recommend that if you catch yourself making that statement, immediately spend a minimum of 20 mins working on the very task you were trying to avoid. and i mean actively working on it, not just opening your laptop and doing the absolute bare minimum. you'll probably hate it, you'll probably think that you can't wait for the 20 mins to be over, but if you actually do substantial work during that time, there's a little less burden and less stress for the future you. do future you a favor and at least work a little bit. also, after the 20 mins are up, consider this: is your workload at least somewhat lighter? you did something productive, so pat yourself on the back — you deserve a reward. also, you already did a little work now... why not spend another 10 mins on it?

look at how you're spending your time. goes a bit with the last bullet point. try to track the amount of time you do productive work (things you have to do, such as chores, at your job, studying, working on your assignments) versus recreational activities (watching tv, even reading a book for fun, social media). im not saying your life has to be centered all around work; i'd be a hypocrite to say that. im just saying that if you don't work now, you'll be working harder in the future to try to pick up the slack.

this isn't meant to guilt trip you or anything like that, but seriously monitor your time. i like to go on google and use the stopwatch there to track the amount of time i'm actually studying and working on the things i need to. then in my planner, i write how many hours i spent that week "being productive". there are 168 hours in a week — 10% of that is 16.8 or roughly 17 hours. 17 hours of studying seems so boring, but in the grand scheme of things, you can spend literally 90% of your time doing anything else. imagine that: studying 17 hrs a week is only 2 1/2 hrs a day. you could watch a movie or two episodes of a show in that time span, easily. or, you could use that time to actually make a dent in your to-do list. it's important to remember that you are the person in charge of how you spend your time. i'm not trying to sound unsympathetic, because people have a lot on their plates between work or taking care of someone else, so you might not have a straight 2 1/2 hours to dedicate to studying. but chances are, there's going to be a time where you can choose freely what you want to do: something fun or an assignment. if you're reaching a point where the due dates are coming closer, i would say make an attempt to choose the assignment.

reward system! first off, please don't take this as a sign to deprive yourself of essentials. a reward is something you don't really need but really want. don't say "im not going to shower until this essay is done". that's not what im recommending at all!!

if you're like me, you might like shopping. or, you might like a specific candy or snack (please also do not use "i can't eat dinner til i finish this" as a method to force yourself to finish your work!!). maybe you have a favorite tv show that comes out with a new episode every sunday (cough, me with euphoria at the moment). here's the thing: why are you indulging in nonessential items + activities whenever you currently have a list of shit to do? "i'll work on my essay after i finish watching this episode!" im sorry, do people get paid before or after they started working their shifts? because if you give yourself the reward with no work, what is motivating you to complete the work?

use this method sparingly and responsibly!

think big picture!!! i have two whiteboards in my room, both of them hanging right by my desk. the first one, im able to stare at straight ahead of me. it's a message i wrote before my superday that congratulated me on getting the internship at the BB bank i wanted to be at so badly. i wrote this before i even knew i got accepted. after that happened, i added a footnote to it; it's me congratulating myself on securing a full-time offer. it sounds obsessive, but my custom safari homepage is a thumbnail of the bank i'll specifically be at with a quote.

the point of that paragraph is to emphasize that i've purposely surrounded myself with words of encouragement/congratulations and images of where i want to be in the future. i can't avoid it. when im at my desk, thinking i want to put off doing this assignment because it's boring or because im apparently too "tired" for it (yet i can easily get into bed and scroll mindlessly on tiktok for an hour), i can look up at my board or even open up a new tab and see specifically what all this work is for. i'm certain you have big goals of your own, or even small, short-term ones.

let those be both a reminder and a motivator for you when it comes to you asking why should you even bother with these assignments.

find meaning in the work you're doing. i actually enjoy a decent portion of my coursework, even the ones not directly related to my major. always keep an open mind with all your classes; if it's required, chances are there's something about it that can be relevant to improving your overall quality of life or even just helping you develop as a person and give you a new perspective in certain topics.

it's easier to do things and justify doing them whenever they stop being "this lame essay i have to write" and is instead something you consider an opportunity to research something that you've never really knew anything about. even if you hate it, take some time and effort to really get to study the material you're "forced" to work with or learn about. you never know when you may need it; maybe an interviewer in your future has some interest in a niche topic you had to write a paper about.

take breaks!! i sound and seem like a workaholic, i bet. truth be told, im not. some days are going to be a lot harder than others.

it's okay to take a break. it's okay to not follow any of that advice whenever you feel like absolute shit. the fact of the matter is if you're not taking proper care of yourself, you're not going to be taking proper care in the actions you do. as far as schooling goes, anything is better than a zero. in the working world, putting out terrible, half-assed work is bound to get you fired or at least looked down upon.

it's very easy to say "always give everything 110%!!!". absolutely no one is surprised whenever it's hard to give 50% on the really bad days.

know your limits! let me start (what i think to be the most important piece of advice when it comes to avoiding burnout) that i myself had to be told by my prof (bless his heart, he still gets anxious over my schedule more than i do HAHA) and that is “we only have 24 hours in a day; most of us need 30, and we spend several sleeping. it’s hard to be successful if you don’t allow yourself the time to try.”

the fact of the matter is that i work my regular job 3x a week, i currently have a spring internship that i spend the other 3 days a week at, went over the allowed # of college courses someone gets to take (+ these are all upper level courses) and i have family obligations & the need to relax and spend time on myself. it gets difficult (this week proof of that) to juggle all these responsibilities and spend a sufficient amount of time to appropriately apply myself to each task i do. for me, though, im a firm believer in competing with myself. the me from laster semester was already struggling with less responsibilities but i am constantly wanting to be better. i know that for me, it’s a very “do-or-die” situation. i refuse to fail any class, i refuse to get less than what ii expect from myself, i refuse to allow myself to fall behind, and i don’t want to tap out — i want it all; i can’t fathom not doing all of this or having to drop my job or the internship or a class. i know myself & i know that i’ll manage to handle all of this. however, don’t be unrealistic with yourself. set a standard. know that some days you will not want to work at all & that’s okay, but know that it’s equally important to go the extra mile on the days that you are able to work hard. don’t make an impossible schedule that you KNOW will be too overwhelming. don’t put unnecessary strain on yourself if you know you’re prone to burning out.

it’s better to do only a couple of things, take a couple of classes, etc. if you’re able to apply yourself fully and truly succeed in whatever you do rather than take on a million things and be mediocre or struggle to stay afloat.

Jdjsjdjs oof yeah it can be like that, especially if you are new to the fandom as well and you're like a goldfish the entire time haha. I'm sure the gifts you made are amazing, I can very much understand the like, feeling of not feeling the most proud when it comes to creating something (especially of you say make gifs on photopea and not ps like myself) but it is the thought that counts! You put the time and effort and that is important! If someone has a problem with that, well slap them with a fish. They are not worth your time tbh. I do think pre-planning helps if you are in more than one! You can start with a basic idea of like to do or you like doing and then slowly build the idea as you get to know the person!

What are you talented at? Apparently textile design or I wouldn’t be in my college course lmao. Idk, I’m good with computers? And I can sing pretty decently?? This is always a hard question for me sorry

What is a big goal you are working towards (or have already achieved)? Getting my degree!! And going into the textile/fashion industry 😆

What’s your aesthetic? If you check out @sp-ace-sthetic everything except what’s tagged aesthetic basically is my aesthetic. It’s not um, the most consistent aesthetic blog ever but I don’t think I am either really so it fits lol. if you want it in words tho, I’m wrecking paint brushes bc they weren’t cleaned straight away, and dying your hair probably far too soon after bleaching it, and glow-in-the-dark stars covering bedroom walls, and staring at cacti in shops bc you want them so bad but knowing that they’d probably just die if you had to take care of them, and bright colours painted onto your nails messily, and paint up your arms the minute you pick up the brush, and boy this got away from me whoops

Pet peeve? Idk, probably when people say stuff that makes it obvious they’ve assumed I’m female. I mean it’s ok sometimes but. Yeah, not always. It’s worse when it’s people that do know but either they’re talking to people that don’t or KAT Idk, seem to just want to be an asshole??

Good advice? The two bits that I do know; if you need help, you can ask! There’s no shame in needing a hand, or in asking for it, and if things are getting too much, take a step back, breathe, and look at it again!

sax player, brass/winds leader

plays every single saxophone known to man + clarinet, flute, and p much every other wind instrument ?? like how?????

hes amazing thats how

so so so dedicated but like

where kihyun is like …. aggressively dedicated shownu is more relaxed abt it

like kihyun plays more but shownu listens more and analyzes more sort of??

thats why hes the leader

has a very good understanding of different styles and how to break them down

just perceptive musically

also really good at imitating specific styles

always has extra valve oil and grease and strings and sticks in his bag it’s ridiculous the thing probably weighs like 30 pounds

he doesn’t really have a specific music taste?? like hes just not picky

also too compliant for his own good …

minhyuk showed up at rehearsal once like “shownu, lets play death metal!!” and shownu was just like “ok sounds good”

also doesn’t really like to be super assertive so he’ll usually suggest articulations and phrasings rather than saying “tongue this note and slur that”

everyone listens to him anyways tho because he’s right

not really tonally or rhythmically inclined tbh hes just good all around

hes really flexible stylistically and likes to play in lots of different styles

loves bob florence, john coltrane, ellington, but will listen to everything

likes to challenge himself w rhythms bc hes pretty good at them!!

he gets really anxious before performances tho and it definitely reflects in his playing :(

probably doesn’t like a lot of contemporary jazz but plays it to challenge himself

also loves thad jones, miles davis, jalc (modern groups playing old jazz make him happy!!) and jazz vocalists - frank sinatra, cecile mclorin savant, etc.

biggest weakness is probably the fact that he doesn’t listen as much as he should so he doesn’t always grasp style well :(

hates long tones, has never done them in his life probably??

bc of that his range isn’t super big but his sound is really strong and powerful

prefers up tempo funk or latin tunes but doesn’t like super complicated rhythms

loves gordon goodwin and the brecker brothers to bits …

like he cant focus for super long periods of time and he cant sit through all of those long rehearsals so his playing suffers bc of that

he practices better in small groups than alone bc the other members help him focus better so he gets more done~

hes the only guitarist u will ever meet who shows up on time to rehearsal… amazing

its rlly relaxing to watch him play hes just really confident n comfortable w his style of playing bc hes p flexible and he loves jazz a lot bc its so different and complicated as a genre!!!

has read every single jazz autobiography and watched every single jazz movie known to man

rhythmically inclined

he, hyungwon, and jooheon just .. have rhythm clapping competitions where they see who can clap the most complicated rhythms for the longest amount of time …. theyre a trip

plays clappingmusic on his phone when hes bored and has converted the entire band to it

fuckin loves free jazz and fusion!!!! and contemporary jazz

he, hyungwon, and jooheon just hang out listening to ornette coleman, charles mingus, chick corea - its a great time

(hyungwon hates ornette coleman but he wont tell changkyun bc he doesn’t want to break his heart :( )

hes a sucker for like .. old romantic sounding jazz

he plays through his real book every couple of days- he really loves the classics too

his biggest weakness is he has troubles communicating with the other group members like w eye contact and tempo changes and stuff

also gets lost in the middle of pieces sometimes bc hes a little spacey n he worries :(

naturally bouncy style, very swingy - he’s a natural, also possibly a prodigy?

won a bunch of classical music competitions when he was a kid but then he realized he liked jazz more so he switched over

the biggest jazz history nerd!! just knows a lot of random facts about all the composers

favorite facts include: billy strayhorn was gay and mingus punched his lead bone player in the mouth (hyungwons response ‘youre next minhyuk’ always makes him laugh)

buys food for everyone before rehearsal

always trying to help everyone become more confident and happy with their own musical abilities

helps everyone rehearse by doing 1-on-1 stuff if they need it

probably plays in elderly homes and in orphanages to help the kids

also not really rhythmically/tonally inclined hes just good

rlly likes jazz-inspired classical music and like … jazz movie soundtracks

watches jazz movies with changkyun

also likes ragtime, second line, dixieland … all those old exciting jazz movements bc theyre so fun to play!!!

he isn’t very confident in his playing like he knows hes good but he doubts himself a lot so he lets other people’s preferences control him??

he and jooheon always argue about the best way to do a fill and tempo and anything else under the sun bc theyre both stubborn and think theyre right

wonho is the only one that can make it stop

the book is a jazz autobiography and he discusses it w changkyun after rehearsal over coffee

hes rhythmically inclined and loves to challenge himself w odd meters and weird fingerings

hes really … absorbed in his own playing because he throws himself into it and wants his walking to be good and he wants to be in time and all these other things so when hes playing he sometimes ignores the rest of the group bc hes trying so hard to sound good

hes a lil bit of a worrier internally and its gets in the way of the confidence of his playing

also procrastinates on his deadlines like theres no tomorrow lol
