Do they use the same pattern for waistcoats? Why are some waist coat bottom area are shaped like inverted triangles and others in a straight line?

Double-chested or single-chested is mostly a stylistic choice. It can indicate a level of formality, or old-school, depending on time and place. But in Phantom I think it is mainly used as a general style.

Also, I think we talk way too little about Maria Bjørnson using the same crocquis for the Phantom and for Raoul. She is really mirroring the two characters, making them diamentral opposites yet similar figures.

As you can see they also sport the same type of waistcoat which is technically double-breasted, but the waistcoat is only overlapping in the upper half while the lower half split. However, this style was only ever done for Raoul, while all or basically all Phantom waistcoats has been single-breasted. So that's an interesting design quirk.

I don't think there ever were any stage productions cutting the waistcoats as low as seen in the design, but here's a random selection of Raoul waistcoats showing the overlapping form:

...while typical Phantom waistcoats are straight, as seen on John Owen-Jones in West End and Hugh Panaro on Broadway:

But despite variations in the cut in front, these waistcoats don't manipulate the torso in any noticeable way, as some of the waistcoats of say the 18th century did. This display at the Museo del Traje in Madrid shows how very differently cut some of the elder waistcoats are, while the 19th century versions are straighter and more in the vein of the one to the right:

So yes, the waistcoats in POTO may vary in cut, and they definitely use more than one pattern to make them. That goes both for variations of the Phantom's waistcoat, and for the difference between single and double breasted versions. But compared to the 18th century the pieces aren't wildly different and gives similar looks. My interpretation of it, anyway.

since apparently there is a darklina Secret History AU in the world i had a fun ask idea. what would the general premise before these various darklina aus: - vampire story, - Heathers (1988), - POTO adaptation, - The Devil Wears Prada (2006), - Star Wars. Almost said Victorian era but i think it IS the Victorian era lol

Vampire AU

This would be really funny bc the Darkling is basically a vampire anyway. And him as like a centuries old melodramatic bitch and Alina as the disgruntled fledgling from the modern era with no sense of glamor whatsoever trying to figure out how to get rid of the fang lisp and being most bummed out bc she can’t buy a fucking mcmuffin in the morning anymore would be so funny.

As for the actual premise, I could see like really leaning into the age old reincarnated wife trope, but maybe going in the OG Dark Shadows take on it, where it’s more about trying to *make her* into the old GF and kind of brainwash her into it. But she actually turns into a vampire very early on and you get the above incompatibilities in full force.

(That being said. A typical Dracula AU of the TGT gang would also be VERY FUN)

OH MY GOD I mean frankly I don’t think this needs any changing whatsoever, the Darkling is simply JD. Alina as Veronica is a mildly harder fit but she has that same kind of sarcastic grit. I feel like the biggest hurdle is getting his characterization to a point where he’d want to suicide bomb the whole school— I do not think he’s at all typically prone to self destruction over having the chance to at all control anything. But if LB managed to make Dark Academia Darklina *cute* and actually compatible then I think Heathers!Darkling can be a messier more destructive flavor.

If we’re going way off script though. I think Darklina as the very very fucked up teacher/student serial killer duo could be INTERESTING.

Phantom of the Opera

Not going to lie, the funniest part of this is making the Darkling ugly because he’s SO vain. I think if his face ever got fucked up he’d be so wretched about it. I would like to see it!!

I think it’s actually really simple to just swap out his grand plans with the obsession over music. And there’s a fairly 1:1 similarity there of Erik’s belief that he is owed Christine’s love because he’s suffered so much in his life and the Darkling thinking Alina is like the cosmic answer to his loneliness and his rightful soulmate whether she wants to be or not goddammit! And of course there’s the mentor/protégée aspect and inherent manipulation. I think the end result of such an AU would probably just be Kay!Phantom if Christine was an angry wet cat.

Anyway literally like 75% of the reason I like TGT as a fandom source material is because it allows me to play dolls with characters that can be slotted into a POTO meets Elisabeth das Musical type dynamic with a) actual magic, b) no real history to feel weird about c) a phantom type character that is not ugly agshdf I’m shallow okay

I think pretty much everything would be the same as the movie except we just have Alina and him as Andy and Miranda Priestly analogues, and they shack up together lmfao. 10/10 no notes, I don’t think anything else needs changing.

Remi is my Phantom of the Opera OC, in a POTO AU I made called "Wrens in a Birdcage" :3

Wrens in a Birdcage is a weird feverdream AU where the Phantom gets fucking transported through time into a school auditorium in 2024, where Remi, who heard weird sounds coming from the storage closest, discovers him.

She's 13 years old, and a crazy tomboy who seems to know more than she says about the time travel, and talks a lot about her serial killer twin cousins who 'died' mysteriously a year ago. After shining flashlights in the Phantom's face, she's finally settled with him being her friend 'City' (a nickname Erik despises, so she uses more to piss him off).

At some point, Erik is transported back to the Paris Opera House in the 1880s, but Remi has somehow tagged along with him, and is now settling there.

Some more crazy shit happens in the AU, but this is all I have for now--

That is partially due to how Sweden got a shortage of food during Medieval times for a time, and when visiting a Swede's house when there is no special occasion, it at times turns into a pot luck fest where the attendees in tow bring ans share the food they bring along

Oh god I don't know if I can catch everything up to speed, but I've changed a lottttt. I go to a community school transition program now to get me back into school. Actually one of my teachers was in Phantom Sydney, and as someone who loves POTO it's always so great to hear his stories. Currently, my celebrity crush is Jimmi Simpson; he's just so charming, funny, he has this air about him that's so likeable. He has such a nice sounding voice, perfect lips (his upper lip is bigger than his lower lip! How cool is that. I think that's such an attractive feature...), the most beautiful nose (I just love love LOVEEE medium-big upturned noses. Upturned noses in general, the best nose on a man.), he's very talented as an actor and has been in some great shows (I actually first started loving him in 2022, when I watched USS Callister in Black Mirror. Actually that's what reignited my crush on him recently with its rewatch!) his gorgeous hair, his beautiful beautiful blue eyes and the fact that he listens to SMOG!!!!! I found out in an article, and honestly that's so good. I'm a fan of Bill Callahan and knowing he listens to Smog is a win for me. I don't know if he still does, but in the article he said he did. He also wears glasses! Gosh, I could go on all day but I don't want to waste your time. Currently my top artists are Jack Ladder, PJ Harvey, John Cale, Roxy Music, Bill Callahan, Scott Walker, David Sylvian, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Yes I know, Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, scandalous) and The Blue Nile. But I think spotify stats is a bit off on the ranking. Jack Ladder I have definitely been listening to most; I am OBSESSED with the song Susan. I actually found it around a year ago and loved it, but then in May started listening again and could not stop. It's actually become my top song of all time on spotify. That's how much I listen to it, and it never gets old. Cold Feet is such a nostalgic song too, it makes me feel some things. Its such a night song, I want to drive with it through the cool air near nature and sky at autumn/winters night with my lover in the car. If only I had a lover, I would cherish him completely. And as I said I've been listening to Bill Callahan, The Wind And The Dove is stuck in my head and all you'd hear if you stepped into my mind would be "I am a child of linger on, I peer through the window gone" just repeating and repeating on the loud speaker at mind terminal. I wonder if I was there, what plane would I catch. There would be so many to choose. Obviously, I get free access as the owner of the land, but my mind is wild and free and expands to many different places with my millions of thoughts, ideas, aspirations, feelings, interests, etc. I could take a world tour and reflect on all of this. I can imagine the floors as warm and my eyes calm and cool, steady guided to reflection plane. I just love that its Winter now by the way, I love all the months, Winter has its special charm. I'd always want to make love in a field near the mountains at night time during winter, with the cool breeze on me. I really do love nature. I love the bush, I love the mountains and towering trees in Washington and Appalachia, the beauty of the Blue Mountains, of course Austria and Switzerland and China is so beautiful too. I could go on and on. Most importantly, I love the mountains, hills, fields, trees, and the country. I also like lakes if they're surrounded by trees like in coming of age films. Speaking of film, I want to watch Wristcutters: A Love Story. It's next on my list. I might as well go, its getting late at 1am. My eyes hurt and I need glasses. I'm glad I get to post this, I'll probably read back on it later.

Freaking. HELL MAN!!! Okay. OKAY! Literally got me acting like a fool pacing the around the entire house because I literally CAN’T EVEN! Neighbors probably think I’m lookin crazy with all these wild gestures, freaking messing up food sounding like Hein the old wheezy dog from Howl’s Moving Castle, had me shout out a curse in disbelief, literally was just about to walk into the microwave door. Alright, I had to stop writing for a moment because I wound up having a seasoning packet explode on me because I was not functioning right. Why am I telling you that? You can’t tell when I start or stop writing but I DON’T KNOW! In any case, note to self: do not try to do things before reading your messages. AND I STILL HAVEN’T GONE PAST THE BLUE TEXT! Listen, I’m a very animated person because of how much I’ve performed in musical theatre so like, freaking looked like I was doing a whole cabaret show up in here. That went WAY harder than I expected it to be and apparently there are some things I didn’t know I wanted until you said it. So um, yeah, thanks for that! 🥵 Okay so MAYBE I did underestimate you JUST a tiny bit and didn’t think you could get me to react more than before, but each time you’ve been proving me wrong and this one just takes the cake! I used to have the issue of selling myself short and giving away services like readings for free because I didn’t think it was worth anything, plus I wanted to help others. Because I did that though, I ran myself ragged and wound up having to stop. By putting limits like a price or a time limit, it shows that what you have is valuable and takes up your own personal time to do to provide them goods. People wind up respecting you more and you can still take care of yourself. They’re begging to be pounded into oblivion? Well, the firehouse can’t let down their favorite pet, can they? So they’ll be more than happy to oblige! “Sunshine, if you keep drooling like that, you’re going to make everyone believe you can’t live another day without my love filling you up~! Kinks are so fun!!! My first few introductions to kink were... not ideal. But when I got back into it at 18, it was with friends that I trusted and properly organised community events and stuff which was much better!! And now I've been in it for years and have dedicated my career to it :3c I feel very lucky that I get to do that tbh, it's not the most lucrative thing but it's fun and fulfilling!!

As for electricity, hmmmm... depends on what you're using and the voltage. A tens unit, for example, is kinda just tingly and buzzy because the pads are directly on your skin. Though if you turn it up enough, it'll also make your muscles tense/twitchy which can be fun if you're safe about it. A violet wand, on the other hand, doesn't actually touch the skin and instead creates sparks between the wand and your skin. So that feels a little more like a sharp, stinging pain. Almost like the world's tiniest, thinnest whip. It can also leave a tingly feeling afterwards if it's a higher voltage. But yeah, really depends on the type of electricity. A shock collar sometimes makes your blood feel like it's fizzing/bubbly and it's definitely a much harder (and less safe) form of estim. But violet wands, which is what most people think of when they think of electricity play, are mostly just delightfully sharp pain~

Don't worry, I'm very direct! I don't vaguepost, and if I did then I'd be like "this IS a vaguepost" in the tags lmao I'm not good at subtlety. We had no can openers so she procured a kitchen knife from the lunch lady and wouldn’t see reason. So when I tried to help her- we got matching scars. NHK free dance thoughts!

Wolfkostin and Chen: I don't think they've had a good twizzle in any competition, and that fall on the lift was rough. It's so annoying that they have such amazing music, and yet barely use it. MIDA should have started with novice and junior teams, and maybe one senior. Having multiple up and coming senior teams in their first season as an ice dance school was such a mistake.

Orihara and Pirenen: I liked their first lift, they need to work on mitigating their traveling during the stationary part, or they will encounter a STATIONARY LIFT BASE? situation, and no one wants that. They have moments of nice edges, and then moments of nothing but flats. They need to work on flow between elements.

Team Koko: Their packaging in both programs is so awful, it's tragic. The music does nothing for them. Uninspired lifts and they just aren't where they need to be technically, they never have been. The music is a snooze. I don't understand the placement of their one foot section, it should be much earlier, their twizzles should be on the music change. Blue skinned tentacle headed woman from the fifth element deserves better than this, also she hops in her twizzles, and its distracting.

Wang and Liu: Very cool arm movements in the one foot, that curve lift is wild as hell! I think its lacking in transition in places, and they are on two feet a lot, also way too many crossovers, etc. The entrance into the character step was very cool and they use the music very well. I think it ended very strong. It's okay, not amazing.

Lopareva and Brissaud: Was that voice over always there or did I just repress it? Guillaume really did them dirty with this program; its melodramatic, simple, and predictable. They also have very short, stilted stroking and don't finish their crossovers, which is a huge pet peeve of mine. Very messy arms in the one foot, they also skate through some musical touches that could really enhance the program.

Kanadai: Lord save me from all POTO programs, including ones that are nothing but distracting razzle dazzle. Their lifts always make me so nervous, Kana is so strong for trusting Dai to lift her. They were very off on the twizzles, the fact they got positive goe is a joke. Marina has brought back her Charlie-White-running-on-the-ice-special for Dai and its just as awful as it was then. They lose speed so easily, he never straightens his free leg, and the last lift literally had me holding my breath thinking they were gonna fall any second.

Reed and Ambrulevicius: Loved their first lift, they always choose a cool and unique piece of music for their free dances. They really commit to the movement, which is great. I liked their free dance last season better. For me the program got a little boring in the middle, but a fun sliding movement. She looked like she was having a blast the whole time, which is great. A very cool dance lift!

Green and Parsons: God, this program is such a miss, it is very 11th place team from 2012 worlds. Her dress looks like it was put together from fabric donated from an old folks home. The choreography is uninspiring, I just don't have much to say, because they have nothing to say in that free dance. The music starts, they do some stuff, and then its over.

Chock and Bates: Her dress is hideous, it looks like it belongs on the 15th place skater at worlds in 1994. Evan's movements, no matter what, look bad, I don't know why, but it just looks stiff and awkward. With the music change, the straight line lift doesn't hit as hard. The music change also did absolutely nothing for them, this program is trash. I don't get what its supposed to be or what's happening, I just know I'm bored.

Fournier-Beaudry and Sorensen: A beautiful program that suits them, it may be Spanish Caravan part two, but they skate it well. They still aren't skating full out, I wonder if they ever will be able to because of Nik's knee. Even with a small twizzle error, they looked so great. The best their straight line lift has looked, Nik didn't look shaky like he has before. This win is so huge for them, and they deserved it.

Writers vent re: assumptions (Please COMMENT if you like, but do not reblog)

I have a dear friend, Mandy*, who is an aspiring author. I've posted about her before, giving her varying ages because I was never sure until recently how old she actually was.

Mandy will be turning 30 this year. She is a mixed (half white, half-Afro Latin@), supposedly Orthodox Jewish woman living in California with her mom, brother and grandmother. When she was around twelve years old, Mandy began writing a fanfiction with a friend centered around her obsession with the musical Phantom of the Opera.

By the time I met her in 2019, she claimed had been working on turning the fanfiction into an original novel for close to 10 years. The problem is that Mandy believes that she can get by without researching things for her novel because she has friends she can ask.

Initially, Mandy's main character was a mirror of herself, a young Jewish woman who was sexually assaulted as a teen by a peer in the LDS community who she believed she was in love with at the time. Her character's father, according to her, is an Iranian pagan "gypsy" who changes after falling in love with a Russian prostitute. She was so connected to the POTO idea that the MC's parents were originally named Erik and Kiersten MacNamara. She's included characters for all of her close friends, including me (without my initial consent), her gay best friend Nick*, our other friend Nicole* and her Muslim friend Maha*. The story also includes violent mob activities, rape and sexual assault, murder, etc, Unfortunately, Mandy believes that just talking to people who fit her characters' backgrounds is enough "research" to properly write the characters. For example, Erik raises his sons to believe that their wives should (in Erik's words) "work only to amuse themselves", because Mandy has heard from "several Muslim male friends" that this is a common school of thought for all men of Iranian descent. [Ironically, Erik shows no indication of being Muslim--he's closer to straight up pagan in the beginning of his book-- and later converts to Roman Catholicism, changing his last name to blend in and become only slightly more Americanized.]

The book is a dark romance, although it does heavily focus on the family dynamics and legacy, as she plans to make it a series where each of the children gets their own book about their journey with their lover. Mandy has asked my opinion several times throughout, and I've told her consistently that she needs to do more research, or she will be ridiculed. Nick, Nicole and Maha all love what she's doing, and I seem to be the only one who realizes Mandy is treading on thin ice with the concept as it is. She's admitted to me in the past that parts of the work are "autobiographical" and has fluctuated wildly from "people are going to want to kill me for the content" to "no one will care." Mandy is also epileptic and has mental health issues including depression and Reactive Attachment Disorder, for which she is in therapy]. I've seen the amount of work she puts into these books affect her health to the point of sending her into depressive spirals if she stops working, because she trauma dumps onto her characters rather than feel her emotions herself. It's gotten to the point that she wants me to roleplay as the characters with her, and she has developed unique voices for all of them--literally. It feels like I am talking to a person with either multiple personalities or dissociative identity disorder, and she can and does switch into character at random. Unfortunately, I've also been told by Nicole, who is a nursing assistant and phlebotomist, that I'm "making things worse" when I tell Mandy she needs to drop the work, even though she will admit I may be right. What Nicole doesn't know is, Mandy spends 2-4 hours at a time Skyping with me role-playing her characters--and won't listen if I try to refuse. It's gotten so bad that some days I have to appear offline just to have room to breathe.

Nicole and I both are also at a disadvantage because we only know Mandy online-- she grew up with Nick and Maha, neither of whom see what we see.

I've tried distancing myself but it's not working. Any thoughts or advice are appreciated.
