nobody talks about olfactory stimming tbh. i hear about visual and tactile and auditory and vestibular bla bla but never olfactory. sometimes i just want to sniff something that smells good over and over and just have it by my face. and it makes me calm. makes me feel good.

Um... As I was perusing through Target, I held this, and these smelled amazing, so I purchased them. That was the main reason I purchased these. Of course I'm going to eat them in moderation, but the smell...it was just heavenly...

hello, i was wondering if an example of an auditory stim would be like singing and humming songs like a lot? or (this is something i do) i have an obsession with velcro. i love the sound so much. i have a collection of it and i very frequently just take it out and like make the sound with it. is that also an auditory stim?
Hi there, I found an article from Medical News Today that talks about types of stimming, such as:
Auditory Stiming
Auditory stimmin uses the person’s sense of hearing and sound. It may include behaviors such as:
vocal sounds, such as humming
tapping on objects or ears, covering and uncovering ears, and finger-snapping
repetitive speech
Tactile stimming
Tactile stimming uses the person’s sense of touch. It may include behaviors such as:
skin-rubbing or scratching with the hands or objects
hand movements, such as opening and closing one’s fists
finger-tapping
Visual stimming
Visual stimming uses a person’s sense of sight. It may include repetitive behaviors such as:
staring or gazing at objects, such as ceiling fans or lights
repetitive blinking or turning lights on and off
moving fingers in front of the eyes
hand-flapping
eye tracking or peering from the corners of the eyes
object placement, such as lining up objects
Vestibular stimming
Vestibular stimming uses a person’s sense of movement and balance. It may include repetitive behaviors such as:
rocking front to back or side to side
spinning
jumping
pacing
Olfactory or taste stimming
Olfactory and taste stimming use a person’s sense of smell and taste. They may include repetitive behaviors such as:
sniffing or smelling people or objects
licking
tasting objects by placing them in the mouth
The article will be below if you want to read it. Since you like the sound of Velcro, that could be an auditory stim.
I hope this helps. Thank you for the inbox. I hope you have a wonderful day/night. ♥️

Shout out to people who have really unconventional ways of stimming; uncommon vocal stims, stimming with strange textures that most people don't like, uncommon visual stims, olfactory stimming with unusual scents, unusual makeshift stim tools, uncommon body stims etc etc
You are so awesome and cool, and I do all of this stuff too!

(I'M NOT A PROFESSIONAL I JUST LIKE TO RESEARCH SOME TOPICS SO PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I’M WRONG ON ANYTHING) Not ALL autistics/adhders either flap their arms or leg bounce as stims (Yes these stims are common with autism/adhd but it's not the ONLY stim they do and definitely not a “If they don't do this, they don't have that”). First of all those two are both vestibular/proprioceptive stims, they are basically one ‘genre’ of stims, there are 7 types of stims:Visual, auditory, tactile, oral and olfactory/smell, and vestibular and proprioceptive. (Side note: According to the DSM-5 you don't even have to stim to be autistic since stimming is part of category B.) <-(also many neurotypicals also stim so please don’t take this as anything other than explaining different types of stims. Although people with autism and/or ADHD that do stim do it more often) So how i’ll lay it out is define what the types of stims actually mean and examples as to not confuse anyone and provide further information on the topic :D First up we have: Visual stimming: Visual stimming is any repetitive behavior that is done via visual (our eyes). For example, staring at moving things (fans spinning, cars driving past, people running), blinking really fast, using kaleidoscopes and even just moving your fingers in front of your eyes! Auditory stimming: Auditory stimming is any repetitive behavior that uses hearing and/or sound. It involves making sound or hearing sound! So that can be listening to the same song over and over again to humming a tune to blocking and unblocking your ears really quick. Tactile stimming Tactile stimming is any repetitive behavior that uses your sense of touch. Like rubbing/scratching your hands, stroking soft fabrics, biting the inside of your cheeks and twirling/pulling your hair.
Oral stimming Oral stimming is any repetitive behavior involving chewing. Pretty self explanatory, I don’t think I can explain this further lol. Examples include biting straws and chewing necklaces. Olfactory stimming Olfactory stimming is any repetitive behavior that uses your sense of smell. This can be repeatedly smelling candles, sniffing fresh bread and even sniffing washed clothing. Vestibular stimming Vestibular stimming is any repetitive behavior that involves movement and/or balance! It can be spinning, rocking, jumping and even swinging! It could also be simply pacing or throwing things too! (You can tell what type of stim I like the most XD). Proprioceptive stimming Proprioceptive stimming is any repetitive behavior that involves weight and/or spacial awareness. Like using weighted blankets, bear hugs, and physical pressure. ((essay go brrr)) ((I WROTE TOO MUCH IM GENUINELY SO SORRY THIS IS LIKE 400 WORDS IM SO SORRY IM SO SORRY IM SO SORRY))
I'M ALSO NOT A PROFESSIONAL I CANT CORRECT YOU-
I (again :( ) can't say much to the topic itself, just that it really was a pleasure to read :3 I think I might be actually using tactile stimming, in situations when I'm nervous I'm like, touching my nose? Idk it sounds weird but I think it's a really good way to 'get back' when I have a derealization (I think it's called that) and it's just nice to do that. ((I noticed that I was doing this before but never considered it a stim tbh))
And you like vestibular stimming? :3 (it's not a real question, I think you chose anon for a reason ((but you can still answer if you are comfortable! C: )) I sometimes do the rocking, but only when I'm bored so I don't think it's a stim-
So dear anon (I think I know who you are >:]]) thank you so much for explaining the different types of stims! It really is nice getting to know a topic better, especially when you are interested in it :D
((ALSO DON'T BE SORRY I REPEAT: DON'T BE SORRYYYY YOU JUST SAVED ME 52 MINUTES OF BOREDOM I LOVE YOU AND I ALSO SPENT TIME GOOD ON MY PHONE FOR ONCE SO DON'T BE SORRY))
