A new animal has been unveiled鈥攐ne of the forest鈥檚 best-kept secrets: the Northern Olingo!
A member of the Procyonidae family (which includes the well-known raccoons and coatis), the olingo stands out with its elusive nature. Little is known about its behavior in the wild, making it a true mystery of the treetops.
I鈥檓 excited to share that this illustration is sponsored by [sponsor name] and [park name], a fantastic place to spot and photograph this rare creature.

The olinguito is the smallest member of the raccoon family. It has thick, woolly fur that is denser and more colorful (orange or reddish brown) than its closest relatives, the olingos. Its head and body length is 14 inches long (355 mm), plus a tail 13-17 inches in length (335-425 mm), and it weighs 2 pounds (900 grams). Males and females are similar in size.
Tumblr media
The olinguito mainly eats fruit, but may also eat some insects and nectar. The solitary animals live in trees and are mostly nocturnal. It is an adept jumper that can leap from tree to tree. Mothers raise a single baby at a time. The olinguito is found only in cloud forests of the northern Andes Mountains, in聽Ecuador and Colombia, at high elevations聽 (5,000 to 9,000 feet above sea level).

In a forest in what was once the US state of Connecticut a large animal is sleeping. With digestive system not fully capable of digesting its food of choice, it has to sleep somberly for most of the day, and spends the rest of it eating, in order to get the most nutrients possible during its wake hours. This black and white giant, the giant trash panda (Aupanda novoanglicum), is one of the last Diacyonines, bear like raccoons that inhabited the continent for the last twenty million years and lost much of their diversity over the course of this epoch. Now the last ones inhabit only the forests of the northeast and Mexico.
Tumblr media
The forests Northeast of the Appalachians thus serve as an important refugium in North America for endemic species that declined over the course of the Catiocene, or fully disappeared in the rest of the continent following the GALBI. There鈥檚 plenty of environments here, with really varied forests that trap different amounts of humidity, depending on the kinds of trees, and let different habitats coexist.
One such example are the bamboo forests of New England, mainly found on the coast, that are on average moistier than nearby areas, and other than trash pandas allow for monkeys and even lemurs, introduced to Florida in the Holocene, that later spread to the rest of the East Coast, to thrive.
This varied forested environment also allowed for another raccoon to specialise itself, taking to the trees and developing an almost primate like bodyplan, giving rise to the third procyonid lineage, after olingos and kinkajous, to do so, the misheems (Betulocyon arboreus).

Procyonidae
The family that makes up raccoons, ringtails, cacomistles, coatis, kinkajous, olingos, and olinguitos.
Tumblr media
Low quality picture, but I just thought it was neat how almost all of them have ringed tails. (Accept for the kinkajou.) Raccoons are probably my favorite animal, but I love all their funky little cousins too.
