Barty wasn't put in Gryffindor for a reason. He never said he was brave, never pretended to be anything less than a coward through and through. Perhaps, as Dorcas sometimes told him, he underestimated himself, but he was a sound believer of having low expectations to avoid disappointment.

So when Evan brushed hands over the crooked library table, he wrote it off as an accident. (And if he shifted the ink slightly with his elbow, in an attempt for him to do it again, that was nobody's business but his own.)

And when he tripped over, and Evan caught him blithely around the waist, with an affectionate "even my walk isn't that bent and I'm gay", he was sure it was his heat-addled mind. The summer air really did play tricks on people. (The summer air also brought out the glow in Barty's face, he would never blush of course.)

After all, making flower chains was something Evan did for everyone, and as much as he could wish, it didn't make him special just because they were threaded into his hair instead. (It really didn’t matter either that his fingers were rough against Barty’s scalp, twisting slight curls around the stems.)

And if, when Barty had nightmares, he crawled into Evan's bed, it was just a purely platonic gesture to pull the sheets over the both of them. He had a habit of slinging an arm round Barty and drawing him close enough that he could feel his heartbeat through his shoulders. And when they woke up, he would leave before Evan got the chance to, quick enough that they could pretend it never happened at all. (If Barty had memorised the slow 4/4 rhythm of his breath, nobody would know)

So it was very easy for him to forget the whole wine-induced incident of The Kiss. The sharp bite of Evans mouth against his own, and Barty's fingers gripping the front of his collar. (It was of their own accord, almost like they had a mind of their own, he would never purposefully stop Evan from leaving.)

The music was far too loud, drowning out his lungs. Their plea for oxygen was easily overridden by the desperation for more. He doesn't think he could ever get enough of him. If only Evan was a murderer, then Barty's last sight could be his bright dark eyes. (Barty wasn't in love, he really wasn't.)

It didn't even mean anything anyways, obviously Evan didn't like him like that, so he avoided bringing it up like the coward he was and they slipped back into what they were before, what they would always be: best friends.

Only best friends shouldn't know the way you taste.

“you’re shaking.” rin states, giving you a side glare while you’re writing an essay.

“oh. i am.” you stare at your hands for a few seconds, watching as they twitch when you stop typing. your eyes flick back to the screen and continue clicking away.

rin’s frown deepens a bit and he cant help but stare at you as you ignore the trembles. he sighs heavily in annoyance and grabs the coffee cup sitting in front of you.

“you got this caffeinated…” he mumbles, “you’re not supposed to be having caffeine. it’s what makes you shake.” he places the cup down continues to look at you, watching your every move.

rin’s always been observant. he notices the small twinkle in your eyes when you realize your favorite pastry is in stock. he notices the forced smile you give people when you’re far past your social limit for the day. the way you pout a bit when you’re focused.

and the way the you tremble after you realize you forgot to tell the barista you’d like your coffee decaf because it makes you incredibly shaky.

“well….i need the caffeine this time.” you mutter, trying to excuse your forgetfulness.

“need it? for what?” he inquires, raising an eyebrow at you.

“so i don’t fall asleep while writing my essay”

“uh huh….right” he doesn’t believe you. and you know he doesn’t. and he knows that you know that. “did you eat before you got your coffee?”

you pause your typing, watching as your tremors get worse. “um….yes” you glance at him, though he cuts you off. “one macaron we bought at that new bakery doesn’t count.” he’s put his phone down and is now completely focused on you.

“it’s better than nothing” you sigh, throwing your head back against the couch cushion. “well it might as well have been nothing, you’re shaking worse than normal” you couldn’t even argue with that because you were in fact shaking a lot more. you sat in silence and your computer screen started going dim. “just take a break and eat something.” he deadpans, reaching for your laptop.

rin was always very supportive of how you treated your body as long as you were happy and healthy. he’s always been like that, making sure you make the right decisions fit for your body. but drinking caffeine with no food was growing to be a bad habit of yours. and he had to stop it.

“but i-”

“don’t argue, your essay can wait and we both know you hate the shaking.” he holds his hand out, waiting for you to place the laptop in his hand. you stay still, hands slowly gripping onto the keyboard tighter.

rin sighs, knowing there’s one thing that would get you off of the couch. he’s looking at you with his signature blank expression, “if you stop, we can go to the cat cafe you saw last week…” his heart swells a bit at the sight of your eyes regaining their signature twinkle.

“really?” you grin, immediately shutting off your laptop and placing it on the floor. rin nods, trying not to smile at your reaction. “okay, let’s go!” and just like that, you’re off of the couch and shuffling to your shared bedroom to change.

rin stays on the couch for a few moments, now mentally preparing for the amount of “we should get a cat” comments he’s about to receive from you. but it’s worth it, he thinks, as long as you’re happy and healthy.

soon, you’re both ready to leave and you’re still shaking. though this time, it’s mostly from excitement <3

Lee know was in a mischievous mood, he wanted to cause trouble and he wanted to do so now. After thinking a bit about a plan, he decided to target his only hyung, Chan. He knew targeting Chan out of everyone, would be extremely stupid, but he decided to do it anyways. However, he wasn't going to do it alone, so he went on to find someone to help him. The first person he met when leaving his room, was Hyunjin, and so he walked up to the poor boy.

"Hey! Come here, you." Lee know walked towards Hyunjin but still called the other.

"What do you want?" Hyunjin teased.

"Wanna pour ice cold water on Chan hyung while he's showering with me?" Lee know went straight to the point.

Hyunjin groaned, knowing that no isn't an answer. "Fine, but only because I am bored and got nothing to do."

"Yeah, yeah. Let's go get it all ready!" Lee know urged as he pulled hyunjin with him to get a bucket.

After the two boys filled up the bucket with water and ice, they carefully carried it over to the bathroom Chan was showering in. They were both walking slowly when I.N bumped into Hyunjin's shoulder right infront of the bathroom door. "Hey! Be careful! You almost made me pour this all over you!"

"Sorry, sorry... What- why do you have this?" Jeongin raised his eyebrow suspiciously.

Lee know and Hyunjin glanced at each other, talking with their eyes. Then spoke Lee know. "Okay, you have to promise not to tell."

I.N smirked, this was going to be good. "Fine."

"Soooo... we're gonna pour this on Chan hyung while he's showering." Hyunjin quickly explained, his arm getting tired from carrying the heavy bucket.

I.N's eyes widened and he started laughing. "He's going to kill you!"

Lee know quickly shooshed him. "No he's not. Because he's not going to know it was us, because you're not going to tell him. Okay?"

Jeongin started smirking again. "You know... I'll have to think about it."

"Jeongin!" Hyunjin scolded.

"Fineee... he will know it's you guys though. He always knows." I.N shrugged.

"Not this time. We have a detailed plan." Lee know shook his head.

I.N chuckled and left the room with a little: "whatever you sayyyy~"

Hyunjin and Lee know both rolled their eyes as if on cue, and silently went into the bathroom, making sure Chan was facing the other way, and then pouring the water all over him. They both fought their laughter when their leader let out a high pitched scream and ran out of the room.

Both of them heading to the living room and turning the TV on, pretending to have been watching something all along.

"HEY! You think you're funny?!?!?" Chan ran into the room a few minutes later, his hair wet.

Hyunjin and Lee know both pulled their most innocent faces and turned to face him. "Huh?"

"Don't you 'huh' me, you know what you did!" He practically had steam coming out of his bright red ears.

"We were here for an hour now... we have no idea what you're talking about." Hyunjin shrugged.

"Stop lying." Chan folded his arms.

"No, we're serious, see? We're halfway through the movie." Lee know showed Chan. Of course all he did was skip most of the movie, but that was just one tiny forgotten detail.

"But you guys are the only ones home!" Chan argued farther.

"Isn't Jeongin home as well?" As much as Hyunjin loved his little brother, he still appreciated his own life a little.

"He is...? That little-" and with that, Chan was out of the room. Leaving two laughing boys behind.

They both listened carefully when they heard Chan running into I.N's room, opening the door right away. They could then hear the boy screaming in laughter.

"Huh? Why is he laughing? I thought Chan would- oh. OH NO." Hyunjin realized what was happening and stood up, looking for anywhere he could hide just in case Chan realized I.N was infact, innocent.

"Huh? What?" Lee know looked confused, glancing at Hyunjin's panicked figure and trying to understand why he was so stressed.

"Are you not listening? Chan hyung is obviously tick-" Hyunjin and Lee know we're so deep in their confusion and stress that they didn't even notice that the laughter has stopped.

"Well, well, well... look who lied to me after all..." Chan was standing right behind the two with an angry looking I.N by his side.

"It was his idea!" Hyunjin pointed at Lee know, who looked back at him with a betrayed expression.

"So you're telling me that he came up to you, telling you what he was going to do and you just went along and helped him? And not only that, but you then proceeded to throw this one under the bus when I caught you?" Chan shook his head in disapproval and wrapped his arm around Jeongin when mentioning him.

Jeongin nodded, still somewhat pouting. "Hyung, I want them to be punished."

"If that's your wish." Chan shrugged and went over the the two boys who were standing frozen together. He grabbed them both by an arm each, and managed to somehow lay them both gently on the couch. Hyunjin on the horizontal part of the couch, and Lee know on the vertical.

Chan then called I.N over. "I'm going to need you to take on Hyunjin. Can you do that?"

I.N smiled and nodded. "Absolutely. "

He then jumped on Hyunjin, not giving the boy a chance to even think, and pinned his hands under his knees. Not wasting any time and immediately starting to tickle his mid section.

Hyunjin threw his head back and tried to shake Jeongin off of him, but was unsuccessful. So he just laid there and laughed.

Meanwhile, Chan already had pinned Lee know's arms above his head, and then sat on his pinned wrists to keep them in place. He then began to teasingly walk his fingers down the younger's arms, watching as the other huffed and struggled to hold his laughter in.

Chan laughed as Lee know let out a little laugh, but then shut his mouth close. "Just let it all out... don't torture yourself."

"T-the on- only thinG torturing mehe i-is yo-you!" Lee know stuttered, determined to not laugh.

Hyunjin was in the complete opposite position, he realized early on that laughing will be way easier than trying not to, so he was just going with it and letting I.N get his revenge while he just squirmed and laughed. "STAAHAHP!!"

Jeongin laughed along with him. "Just a little more... I'm not bored yet."

"YOUHULL NEHHEEVR GEHET BOHORED! HAHAHAH!!" Hyunjin got even more hysterical when I.N found a particularly sensative spot under his arms.

"I CAHAHANT ANYHYMORE!!!"

I.N grinned and stopped. "Okay... okay..." he got off Hyunjin and sat next to him instead, now watching the entertaining show Chan and Lee know we're putting on.

With Lee know still refusing to laugh, Chan was now getting tired of the stubbornness and was going to get real. With a wink, he started moving around spots as fast as he could, not giving Lee know even a second to get used to the feeling. His fingers were everywhere at once. And Lee know could feel himself breaking.

"Wahahait- OKAHAHAY OKAHAHAY!! I GIHIVE IHIN!" Minho was able to endure 7 seconds before going into silent laughter.

Chan laughed and got off, petting his stomach like you would to a cat. Then looking over at Jeongin and mentioning for him to come with. "Our work here is done, let's go."

Chan then turned to look at both hyunjin and Lee know. "And you two- if you ever even think about attempting anything like what has happening today, ever again... you know what's coming for you. Got it?"

The two nodded frantically and watched in relief as Cha and I.N left the room, both of them letting out a sign of relief and falling back down onto the couch.

Being a great prankster was hard...

2023 CHARACTER WRAPPED

I was tagged by @st-eve-barnes to share my top nine characters of the last year and I'm so sorry - this has been sitting in my drafts for three weeks and I completely forgot to post it 🙈. Thank you so much for the tag, darling!

There is probably no doubt about the Nr 1. right?

2. The second is also pretty obvious - no surprises here 😅

3. Now it starts getting complicated 😀 The show of the year for me was definitely The Last Kingdom and not only because of Sihtric who will probably live rent free in my head for ever. I loved the whole setting, the heroes and the villains, the male and female protagonists. I even loved Aethelwold - it's rare to see such a perfect portrayal of a small and disgusting weasel who starts as a small offended drunkyard and develops into mean, plotting intrigant ready to go over dead bodies. So - for Bebbanburg and all the great characters that made this show exceptional for me! Stiorra and Siggtryger are only representing they all 😅

4. I really loved the S1 of Loki and I have my reservations for S2, but then Tom Hiddleston being such a great actor as he is convinced me - I think I love Loki solely because of him and the way he lives that character.

5. OK, this was unexpected, but thank to certain efforts of some incredibly talented people here I have to admit I'm slowly starting to fall in love with this blondie. And I love his brother too, but only a certain fandom variation, so I can't put the original character here, as I still think he's a moron

6. Some movie stuff needs to be included too, so I must mention this handsome guy

7. OMG It's already Nr. 7 and the underrepresentation of female characters on my list is disturbing. Shit. This is discrimination pure, so here we go Barbie:

8. This year I not only finally watcher The Last Kingdom, but also another gorgeous show that was on my watch list like for ever and fell in love with another beautiful and strong woman. For me she was the real star of the Vikings.

pre-relationship ramble for briar evie and nate :)

this has been in my drafts for two days now but i forgot to post it lol

before they started dating, nate and briar hated each other and this went all the way back to middle school where they first met

briar hated nate because he thought nobody is that nice, he has to be hiding something (also a good amount of jealousy at just how likable nate is. briar constantly strives for perfection and nate seemed to achieve it effortlessly despite not exceling at every aspect of life.)

nate hated briar because wow. what a pretentious prick.

also remember that briar puts on this arrogant persona as a defense mechanism and when he notices that he gets under someone's skin, he just has to keep poking the bear because, in his mind, it registers as him strengthening his defense

so nate was also just straight up anxious to be in briar's presence. he thought that eventually briar would annoy him so much that he would lose control over his emotions

they don't go to the same school anymore. briar goes to this rich kid private school for vampires while evie and nate go to the same regular human highschool

so all three of them don't realize that they all know each other at first

nate and evie share a few classes and after nate came back, evie worked up the nerve to ask wether she can sit next to him. her old desk mate was making her uncomfortable and the seat next to nate was the only other free one

she was like TERRIFIED to ask, she was all like omg i'm being so annoying i'm being such an inconvenience i don't even know this guy oh god

but she asks anyway and nate is just like. sure ^-^

they end up getting really close and evelyn thinks wow he is so nice <3 and promptly develops a crush

i would say the bar is in hell but we're talking about nate so i stand with evie

nate is all like. ah how nice to have a new friend whom i have completely platonic feelings for :]

but wait it gets funnier (to me at least)

nate starts comming by the café where evelyn works to see his good totally platonic not romantic buddy friend peer ™

and during his 4th visit briar is there too :) now usually they would have just ignored each other but evie is so excited to introduce her new friends to each other!!

she's like ah nate good that you're here this is my friend that i've been telling you about :3 his name is briar :3

cue one minute of prolonged eye contact, "yeah we've met 😐"

she asks if they're friends, and they both say no

and evie might be bad at social cues but she can read people that she knows well so she immediately clocks the romantic tension between these dummies

so over the course of the next few weeks she tries to figure out what the hell is going on between these two without outright asking. partly because she's bever seen nate be so outright rude to anybody and partly because she's nosy

this is her conclusion: say they're not friends + seem annoyed at each other + romantic tension + briar puts up a front of arrogance to hide his affection + bicker like an old married couple = they're dating?

so for the next few weeks, she spends every interaction these three have thinking "aw they're such a cute couple :] this totally doesn't suck or make me jealous at all haha"

in conclusion misunderstandings in media are only good when i find them funny

Stan Azuki for clear skin and free therapy(and a little bit of angst) P.S. This is a draft from months ago but I forgot to post it

UGHHH as much as i want them to get together already, I think Aya’s reaction is valid because keep in mind Aya doesn’t know what Mizuki thinks of her and doesn’t know that all those flirty(?)/sweet lines said to her was a desperate attempt of Mizuki trying to keep up the image of a cool guy persona or smth like that, hence why she always goes, “WHY DID I SAY THAT OMG” after saying those lines cuz it was never intentional(I’m not certain about this cuz idk if Mizuki’s feelings towards Aya is romantic, and she’s actually subconciously or conciously projecting it)

As for Mizuki, I relate to her in some aspects, like not being able to find the right timing in talking to an extrovert alone, not being able to wear flashy things you like in school cuz you don’t want to be the center of attention, overthinking and being anxious, being intimidated by popular extrovert kids, and so on. What she did was understandable but not justifiable cuz she was aware that Aya had a crush on her guy persona and still decided to keep up the act and unintentionally(and this is really important to take note of), toyed with her feelings. 

In Aya’s eyes, a classmate whom she wanted to be friends with turns out to be the “guy” she liked, and was completely aware of that fact, and still kept talking to her pretending to be a guy, being the witness to her blushing flustering girly side which she never showed to any guy in school; she felt deceived, embarrased, and betrayed. 

They need time to gather up their thoughts and feelings for now, and I want Aya to get the apology she deserves, and for Mizuki to clear up her misconception about how Aya thinks of her.

Anyways about how I think they’ll reconcile, look at this art the author posted before on twitter:

So yeah, I’m thinking that the way they’ll reconcile is through music, rather than direct communication

Omg, I love Guy Gardner too! While John Stewart and Kyle Reyner are my favorite GLs, there's something about Guy Gardner and his personality that makes him so interesting.

Nice!! My favourites are Hal and Guy, but I think the best GL comics are when all four of them are together. My first comic run was ‘Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps’ which has all of them being bros together and it’s still my favourite run to this day

And you’re so right about Guy. He’s such a well rounded character, he’s somehow really complex and really simple at the same time.

He’s angry and brash and unapologetically rough-around-the-edges, but he’s also so loyal and caring when he wants to be.

He’s got a tragic past that he knows is responsible for the way he is today, but he never makes excuses because of it.

He may not have the best self-esteem under all that bluster, but he doesn’t waste a second sulking. Not when he could be out there making a difference. He kinda reminds me of Wrecker from The Bad Batch

gary AND stary? my two favorite things... i have many many thoughts. here's a few gary headcanons first. if you want to hear more about what i think about gary though, check out this post right hyuh!

anyways, without further ado. headcanon time!

gary, his entire life, has always lacked a close knit group. he's the guy you'd maybe consider your friend until you realize you're just not that close but still think he's nice. there was nothing bad anyone could say about him but there was also really no one who stuck around to actually get to know him. he doesn't mind though, he knows hes appreciated by many and knows that at the end of the day, all that matters is that he probably brightened atleast one person's day today. although, sometimes, he wishes he belonged with a group of people he could make smile everyday.

gary is way more attached to his family more than anything, despite being the middle child (as a middle child, it kinda sucks ass.) he's got good intuition and knows how to diffuse situations really well because of his place in the family.

i know his family calls him gary, but i think it would be cute if they also refer to him as "junior" too. it's a cute nickname and seems like something they'd do! i can imagine his parents and older siblings would call him that the most.

i think with being a family-oriented guy, gary is a true romantic... at heart. of course, there's a dilemma here with his faith. he believes he can't actually go on forth with his dreams. so rather than trying to go against the church's wishes completely, he catches himself just daydreaming about an idealized yet seemingly unobtainable future with a husband and kids when the topic of families come about. cant spell gary without gay *beaten to death*

gary is an embarrassing, shameless dork to be around. one could get second hand embarrassment from seeing him be so oblivious to passive aggressive insults and jabs or to seeing him attempting to ham it out on the dancefloor. he's just really genuine with his actions and tries to have a good time. he's a happy fella :)

i often fluctuate when thinking about how they meet again, but it's generally when they're older and more mature. they start off as friends again, with gary perusing the friendship. but it’s stan who is the first one to realize he has feelings.

their first kiss is pretty awkward and spur of the moment on gary's part. stan's no stranger to romance (although he’s still pretty dull,) but gary quickly pulling him aside and kissing him was definitely something he didn't expect. after kissing him, gary is apologizing profusely and borderline freaking out whilst stan is just like 😐😳 the whole time. they're a mess...

stan's pretty overprotective of gary but not in the jealous way.. well sometimes he is, but more so defending him to others. i mean, just look at "all about mormons" all he does to the boys is defend gary constantly like, "hey leave him alone he's actually nice" for majority of the episode. sure, in that context he didn't want to be rude but when he actually starts liking gary he definitely feels the need to defend him... even if gary doesn't care about what others say.

on the overprotective note, not only does stan get jealous more out of the two but he also thinks that just because gary is sweet to everyone that hes naïve and feels the need to make sure no ones taking advantage of his niceness. he has a habit of being needlessly worried. gary is definitely more than capable to take care of himself. he does find the gesture sweet though and probably teases stan about it, much to stans dismay.

gary is always making shit for stan, like, always. he'll make him handmade crafts for him, food from scratch for him, and anything else convenient enough to make. stan feels bad for taking up so much of gary's time for all of that but gary swears he doesnt mind. i imagine there's a point where stan gets fed up with all those little gifts he ends up writing and singing a song for gary that's "only for him" in return.

when they have their arguments or fights, stan is definitely the more stubborn one out of the two and could go for hours just trying to avoid gary and will walk on eggshells around him just so it doesn’t mean a big scary confrontation. of course, nothing gets passed gary when feelings are hurt, so he’s usually the one to simmer down the flames and sit stan down. naturally, any confrontation is a bit scary for stan but with gary being gary, he’s always relieved with how easy and forgiving he is even if it does seem a little unfair.

and of course, a staple of their relationship is star gazing. starry stary.

Watched the first 12 episodes of Crystalized a few days ago, but it’s only just sunk in (plus I completely forgot this was in my drafts), so here’s pretty much how my viewing session went down…

(Spoilers under the cut)

- I wanna hug everyone so bad this season. It started rough and it’s only gonna get worse.

- Cole flexes his leadership muscles

- Kai is once more extremely competent and we finally get to see his reaction to Nya merging with the ocean

- Jay losing his grip on sanity is very in character, especially considering how he reacted to being trapped in the First Realm

- Zane why did you turn off your emotions? I know you didn’t wanna grieve but come on dude

- Lloyd. My precious green bean. Light of my life. Everything is catching up to him

- THE SECOND EPISODE MADE ME CRY WITHIN THE FIRST TWO MINUTES WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT?

- Nya remembered Kai first I-

- Ngl, Aspheera is hilarious. Revenge!

- I’ve got a bad feeling about these New Ninja…

- That Garmadon name-drop, along with his appearance in the sets, plus actual confirmation he's gonna appear as an ally. Yh, this season is gonna be a ride…

- OF COURSE TWITCHY REVEALED WHERE THEY WERE! XD What were they expecting? (Also, the scandalous looks the Ninja give him are hilarious ^^)

- W-Why Lloyd for the fake Mechanic? Lloyd Can’t-act-to-save-his-life Garmadon? Plus his eyes are literally the only ones in the entire realm that are bright green…

- UMM 😳 Yes, hello Queen that I want to both hug and slap at the same time… How?! It’s awesome, but how?!

- Zane and Nya have both had their worst fears come true this season… Zane turned off his emotions and Nya lost her powers… And then of course, Lloyd saw what he most feared in that reflection too 0_0 Looking at both those sets and the trailer, Lloyd is definitely gonna snap this season. I’m scared for this poor traumatised child…

I merely like to analyze said characters to see how they are reacting, since they don't always say so out loud. Also, when it comes to Rose Quartz I think I was in the minority who liked her better than Steven, flaws or not. I tried to like him, but as an extremely curious person his inability to ask questions frustrated me. Steven Universe in general had a good outline and message, but fell flat when it came to executing them. Ironically, despite never marketing itself as particularly pacifistic, mha has done better than a lot of shows at demonstrating forgiveness. Whereas the Steven Universe fandom weirdly grew more aggressive with time, the mha fandom has oddly gotten more open minded due to this series. People who once hated Endeavor and Bakugo began to like them and considered the actual message being sent: That bad people are still people. I think that's because mha engages it's audience. A lot of stories tell the narrative without trying to interact with the audience a bunch. You already mentioned it with explaining how to sneakily tell a queer story, but Horikoshi also engages the audience with Bakugo and Endeavor's opinion. The story starts off very disparaging of them, and gradually unearths their reasons and kinder side without forgetting what they've done. Due to that, most people in the mha audience relaxed their opinions and became more open minded than they were before. I think that's what mha did right that shows like Steven universe did wrong. Mha uses the audience's expectations against them, and then frames things in a way that holds the person accountable while also making them sympathetic.

I’ll get to my whole thing with that in a sec tho, Steven universe time lol.

I think the main reason why Steven universe falls flat is because of how it really only knows one way to humanize a character: redemption arcs

What do I mean by this? Mha uses a plethora of architypes; from atonement with endeavor, to redemption with Katsuki. Steven universe though? It only knows how to use one: redemption arcs. And not even well! Tbh with you, Steven universe feels like it was written by a writer without much experience, or at the very least a writer who was never taught how to write by a professor. Which honestly makes sense with Rebecca sugar, since before this they only worked on music and character design in other shows (like adventure time) and they never actually WROTE anything. Unlike horikoshi, Dana Terrance, etc.

The ONLY character I think they actually wrote well was rose, and that’s partly to do with how she was the only character in the show who had an atonement arc.

And when they couldn’t make a “problematic character” a full redemption arc, they just… killed him and then revived him. Lars was abusive let’s be honest here. A total asshole (love him, but he was and I can admit that) and he was only given a redemption of any kind when he LITERALLY DIED! And with the other three diamonds it was so rushed bc they canceled the series (since a lot of countries banned the show due to ruby and sapphires wedding) and they TRIED to humanize them in the most.. spoon fed way possible and ughhhhhhhh. It’s just overall really bad. Peridot is the only good redemption arc in that show. Love her <3

ANYWAY, I think the reason mha ends up humanizing it’s characters so well is BECAUSE of how it interacts with the audience. Often times playing tongue and cheek with a few things. The “lip service” can, all mights secret love child, “sometimes I forget you guys are kids”, all of it. It’s all done to call out the audience in the most hilarious way to show a more pacifistic message. The most memorable scene in this series to me is when Katsuki is literally shouting his frustrations and feelings at the viewer; and I literally remember thinking, “wait… what?!” BECAUSE THIS IS NOT A NORMAL SHONEN THING! This is so out of character for a shonen anime! When you go into a shonen, you have a certain expectation of what is about to happen. The female love interest is not given a personality aside from a few side comments, the rival/bully is the “bad guy” to some extent, there is some form of love interest competition, and it’s absolutely not about forgiveness.

And the reason for why I personally love this scene so much is because in only a few short lines it manages to take a character from a show, and put them into the perspective of an actual person. When we interact with people and how they’ve hurt us, we tend to only see one perspective. That perspective being that this person is bad because they did bad things to me. It’s hard to put ourselves in the shoes of other people, and it’s just in general EASIER to dehumanize a bad person. (Endeavor, Katsuki, Rose Quartz, the list goes on) But it IS easier to like a villain (like shigaraki) when you frame the bad things they’ve done as something that you couldn’t directly experience. Not many people run into others with murderous rage and experience some sort of trauma from it. Most people were bullied or had abusive dads. Not only that but you also end up giving these characters with murderous rage very relatable problems; so it’s easier to separate them from their bad actions to solely focus on them being a victim in one way or another.

AND YOU KNOW THE BEST PART ABOUT THIS SCENE? ITS LITERALLY TELLING YOU, THE AUDIENCE, IN THE MOST PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE WAY POSSIBLE, THAT HE IS A TEENAGE BOY! He is HUMAN, he has FEELINGS. There are actual reasons for why he does the things he does! And my fucking GOD I could talk about for hours on why I think the internet cringifying fandom, and making the whole “why are curtains blue” meme, and Disney movies (derogatory) just ruined an entire generations ability to analyze storytelling at even a BASIC level.

People were SO SHOCKED and AMAZED when encanto came out because it didn’t have an actual villain in the story and that just makes me so MAD! Because there’s so many stories like this! So many where the villain isn’t actually a villain! But because it’s DISNEY and everyone always talks about Disney! People were absolutely baffled by it. So many people online had to explain a VERY BASIC analysis of the movie because people don’t understand how to analyze stories. Disney didn’t know how to make a realistic antagonist. No, instead they made characters like GASTON, and URASALA, and god, so many more. I wish people grew up in studio ghibli movies if they were gonna grow up on disney movies at all bc it at the very least teaches a different perspective on what makes a villain.

Mha is great though because, like you said, it started them from the ground up and then humanized them through very specific scenes. Endeavors was done gradually through a multitude of perspectives, while Katsuki’s was done through self reflection and action.

I’ve seen people make the argument when people compare endeavor to Katsuki that they are “completely different and have different motivations!!! Katsuki values his own abilities to be the best and get to number one on his own, while endeavor trained a kid to be the best from a young age that would surpass him!” Obviously they aren’t the same character. BUT, there’s an argument to be made that endeavor and all might are parallels of Izuku and Katsuki. And that’s just, a fact. All might even talks about how Katsuki is similar to endeavor.

That’s why Katsuki is actually inspired by endeavors ways of atonement. He learned how to atone through his actions with Izuku and then even apologized to him.

This is all to say that mha radicalized a fandom lol. I’ve seen people literally make the same anti cop arguments but for heroes; it’s great! It’s got a lot of wisdom in it.
