NOAH X READER ONE SHOT

The clock above your head read 21:34, though you’ve been too hunched over your table to see. Your hands were sore and your back hurts, yet studying was more important as you frantically flipped the pages and poorly wrote new notes. You didn’t care how fast your heart was beating. If it means you’ll do good in the exam, so be it.

The second you were too panicked to do one method of studying, you would move onto the next. Whether that was resuming the summary video you had in the background or rereading the textbook, you didn’t care if it wasn’t efficient, you were getting desperate and you needed to have some information memorised. If it means you’ll do good in the exam, so be it.

Eventually, you really couldn’t take it anymore.

This was hopeless.

You banged your elbows on top of your table and pulled onto your face with irritated hands. This was no use. Nothing was working. You weren’t getting any work done.

“What am I doing?” you sobbed,“This is hopeless... I’m not smart enough for this. I can’t do this, I was so stupid for thinking I could.”

Why did you choose this godforsaken subject? Why? All your other subjects were fine, but this one, horrible. The worst part was, this one was the most relevant to what you wanted to do when you left school.

“No, what’s the point? I’ve tried everything. Nothing is going through, and the exam is in two days. I may as well not show up.” you hopelessly claimed, throwing your pen to the side.

“Don’t say that. You just need to change your strategy, since this, is not working at all, hon.” Noah explained, picking it up and offering it back.

You take it, but it didn’t stop your confusion,“I don’t understand...” you sniffled, still recovering from the mental breakdown. All those movies had people work all day and that’s how they got As!,“I thought if I just worked and kept my head down, I would understand all I needed to by now.”

“For at least fifteen hours straight?” Noah asked like you were mad, though there was a sense of affection glimmering in his eyes,“Did you even get something to eat?”

A scoff escapes your dry throat,“No offence Noah, but, you’re not exactly the easiest person to ask help from.” you folded your arms,“Even as my boyfriend, you just, you never sugarcoat what you say, do you?”

Noah rolls his eyes as he responded sans amusement,“Oh come on, you can’t be serious. Every smart person thinks the same. I’m just the only one who’ll admit it. But look, if I really didn’t care, you think I would be doing all this?”

“I know...” you sigh,“I just...I don’t want to disappoint anyone. I want to do well.”

“I want you to do well too, and I don’t want you to just be okay with your results- I want you to be so happy that you could convince me to wear a leotard and tights.” you chuckled at that bizarre hyperbole,“So here’s what I’m thinking. Until I come over tomorrow afternoon to help you study, do anything else. If you really are adamant on doing something, just make a list on all your weak areas so we’ll know what to prioritise. Pinpointing the weak areas... Yeah, that sounds good. Your strengths and weaknesses were all jumbled together. It’s a good starting point. He always knew what to say.

You ended up enjoying a great late night meal with fries and lemonade. This was greater than you expected it to be. You thought that going out this late would be a horrible choice, but no. You would take a quick warm shower and change into your sleepwear. You have time. You laid down in your bed, turning over to turn the lamp off, simultaneously catching note of the time on your alarm: 00:01. It was now the next day.

Were you worried? A part of you still was. A part of you still so badly just wanted to leave the bed to study.

However, a new part was assuring you otherwise. Sleep wasn’t an enemy and if you listened to your body, you’ll feel much better and much more ready to study.

how'd you get good at environment art? i've been tossing around the idea of going into concept art, but i've been afraid of getting into environments. what would you suggest to start out with to someone new to it?

learn perspective!!

its not as hard as it may seem once you understand how vanishing points and horizon lines work. i was lucky enough to be taught perspective when i was young and now im trying to get good at doing it free hand. i never liked how Perfect using rulers and grids made things feel, and by doing it free hand i feel like it adds back that more organic feeling that a real environment has

sometimes the vanishing point isnt even in the frame. my trick is to put my scene in a box. the box itself gives the perspective lines for you to follow and you can still imagine where the vanishing points are or even draw them if you Can see it. something about the box method just really helps me visualize the space im working in. ground, sky, and depth. and put a grid on it! in perspective!! itll really help with visualizing depth. heres an example of what i mean:

straight lines!! i dont know why because it kind of contradicts my last statement about perfect vs organic 💀 but using a straight line tool changed the game for me. on CSP i just turn my post correction all the way up and it makes my lines straight which i prefer so i can still use the same pen and im not locked to a grid. i'll turn it off for organic things in the environment like plants and stuff, but for inorganic things i use straight lines and it always makes it feel Right to me. some people are good at drawing inorganic things freehanded and they still look Right (and leans into that organic environment feeling) but not me for some reason 💀 i love you post correction

UUHH hmm. another little note that isnt necessarily about backgrounds but definitely helps when i draw them is: draw the Effect of the detail, NOT the Exactness of it. especially when youre drawing an environment things are gonna get muddied as they get farther out of focus (hard edges and soft edges are important!! not everything needs to be crisply in focus and itll detract from where you Want people looking anyway if it is). dont think about what you Know the thing is supposed to look like, with all its details. its more about the Feeling of it. ie the Effect of it. with my sketchy style i have a lot of fun with this concept aha i love my scribbles :)

good luck anon!! i hope this helps you in some way!! 💕 also dont get too intimidated by actually drawing the objects in a scene. the box method works for individual objects too. i basically imagine everything as some kind of weird cube or cylinder 😂 break things down as simply as you can and work from there. AND USE REFERENCES

2023 baybeeeee. havent done an art summary in a while since i basically stopped drawing early 2020 and didn't get back on the horse until mid-2022 (i wonder... what could have caused that!) i dont feel like my art has really changed this year, only in the ways that I draw specific sonic characters (looking through my archive is fun bc i can see the progression of the diseases known as Giving Them Big Eyebrows and Drawing The Monoeye) and--more exciting 4 me--my practice with paneling comics! :)

i think the progression is much more noticeably when you line it up with last year's sonic art... i can see all the Milestones.. more talking abt that under the cut

May: couch gets into sonic. June: Yucky Sonic 1.0. this was also the month when i Heard Of fleetway super. July: couch comes back from brazil, having read stc. this is also when i start dong actual short comics. compare may -> june -> july. (also please forgive whatever tf i was doing with skintones. i needed some practice)

august: merger au takes shape. dog invented. also i just really like that speed racer sonic mspaint picture. its fun :) september: deep in the fleet mines. october: i lose a lot of steam and mostly just doodle. another comic comparison for those three months:

november: frontiers comes out. i go crazy mode and make that sonic + knuckles comic with the pretty backgrounds and LOTS OF TINY TEXT. december: winter break AND im tired. january 2023 i come back insane crazy mode and write some fanfiction?? still havent finished that LOL. made some nice cover art :) february: i shift into knuckles mode fora month. make another comic. this one is much better i think :) november -> february

march: i shift into transfem metal sonic mode. also just stick to a lot of doodling. also write more fanfiction. crazy. april: transitory period as i shift back into stc/exit: sonic mode. may: more fanfiction. more comics. i really like how both of these turned out :) while the last two were definitely taking a lot more notes from stc, i think around here i start paying attention to and trying to learn from more creative panelling from artists i admire. like @/superemeralds THOAM and @/starrjoy's pandora au.

june: i play sa2 and it's good. july: i play unleashed and it is both miserable and good. i get in kind of an artistic frustration zone and wiggle my way out. august: idk i think im just chillin. super react dot jpeg happens. it's not even named that, it's named after the other image on the canvas, which was maria holding baby shadow. more comics.

september: i burn out for a bit. get real tired. eventually get back up and make more comics. the goal here and last month has become "try to make more interesting panel shapes. I've noticed other artists don't just use rectangles--try playing with irregular polygons and see where it gets you." well it gets you mixed results as you learn :) also i think after that pause i accept the monoeye into my life. sigh...

october: oc showdown starts and @/neurotypical-sonic asks me to make some halloweeny art :) feels like i dont do much this month bc i focus on those. november: A LOT OF ART?? INSANE. more oc showdown stuff. i play shadow the hedgehog (2005). it's good and i love it. i draw a ton of shit on one canvas for it. Fucking Dember: i have shifted back into stc/EXIT mode. motivation's a little weird bc work's a little weird. doing commissions also makes it weird. well im having fun and being myself :) a final handful of comics from this month:

hey hey ppl who like visual/digital stim toys!! or just like silly little websites/games! here are some brain scratchy - digital fidget - creative stim websites that i've found this week.

this one's pretty simple. you just click to "smash the wall" which shatters revealing a different colored wall. you can break the wall in several places as the new color appears so that multiple colored and shattered walls overlap. surprisingly entertaining as a visual stim for something so simple/one note!

the blob toy! idk how to really even explain this one, tbh it's easier to just click and see for yourself. but basically you can endlessly add colorful bouncing blobs of varying sizes to the screen, and make them fall from the sky. you can create obstacles for them by drawing lines and adding arrows, etc. then the blobs bounce around trying to escape the confines you put them in. very good stuff.

metal cube! another simple one. it's literally just a metal cube that sort of turns into amorphous neon slime, and you chase it around the screen with your mouse. this one is giving interactive screen saver but it's very smooth brain in good way for me.

sketch machine! not the best name for what it is in my opinion but hey no matter. this one is like if MS paint and those weird little squiggly worm toys had a love child. you can change the background color of the square you draw in, and then you can change the color of five different lines/points that you draw with. each time you draw a little line or dot it creates a squiggly worm that swims across the screen. you can draw as many as you want seemingly, and they'll all be overlapping.

im not the best at describing visual things so just click on these and see for yourself! as someone who needs visual stimulation and things to calm myself down out of meltdowns that aren't just like breathing exercises -- these are critical for me in making that moment FUN, ok peace and love if anyone sees this <3

So i have my five fav pages and my five fav drawings. Im going to yap about the pages and mainly just have fun. A bit of a long post but oh well most of mine are lmao

August first of last year! I had to put one of the first pages in the book on the list, the waiting room took forcer that i finished two full pages and there was still more waiting. It might not be one of the prettiest pages but its how this all started. The day before i was trying to design twst vee and i was failing so bad. This page i got the design down and while i might have not kept the design i still really like this page. My fav drawings is def the big one on the left

August 22nd, this was my first time drawing dottore and I’ve always loved drawing rose. I remember the nurse seeing my drawing and asking about it and i got nervous but my mom started “advertising” and hyping me up to the nurse and i could just laugh and nod. I like this page alot, i think all the drawings hit pretty well and the background doodle lines are well placed. Fav drawing is prob the big dottore on the left or the small side view dottore on the right

Jan 17th this is just a cute page to me. The eres family are all so fun to draw and sven is literally just a silly guy. Nothing much to say. I dont have a fav in this one i like all the sven ones

March 15th! I drew these all while on the beach after my appointment. I did end up sticky noting the jade drawing cus it was horrendously bad but i think the stickynote doodles at flavor to the page. Had alot of fun that day with my family, fav drawing is prob the her vee at the middle bottom or the floyd on the top right

This is my dnd character c9 and shroomus(the god in mention and the mushroom on his head) c9 is the host for their god and after years of being the host they have realized just how stupid shroomus is and has grown to hate them. The interactions where so peak i miss this fun-guy. One of the funniest drawing ive done in this book imo

I both love the lillia one and the floyd one. The “this stinks” became a vocal stim for me after drawing them and the one above is just cute. Vee and lilll aswell as vee and floyd interactions are just some of my fav they are all just so goofy

This batch of esfir sketches did something to me. Idk why but the expressions that turn into a full body and also another half body on the side just get me. Esfir is a character i struggle with doing expressions for since she has to pretend so often but this is just like how i did it and need to manifest this energy again

This hsr vee and rose. They are casual sketches from before my surgery but they just feel so yummy. I need to do more with rose and her bird/angle imagery cus i have alot of sketches in this book with the biblical anger rose stuff and obvi thats not gonna happen in twst and her being in a modern au cus of it but still its gonna be fun finding ways to include and hint at it. But yeah i really like both of these

Dude asking, for a friend but how the hell do you find the motivation to finish animatics/comics/interactions and stuff .!?! Your art’s so cool and very tasty i wish i could absorb the way you draw mouths specifically

helloo:3 oo thats such a good question lol bc a lot of the time i DO give up on many art pieces/ideas, most of which never even make it to a sketching phase...i have so many little blurbs from my notes app that just. stayed as little notes and blurbs. (it's also extra tricky bc i don't have as much free time as i used to as a teen lol, thems the breaks when ur a working college student...i gain better art knowledge but at the cost of money and free time...AUHG)

BUT as for motivation? hm, it's different for everyone, but some advice that helps me: break things down, set up a semi-deadline, and also be self indulgent as hell with your work.

for my post-juno incident comic- i almost gave up halfway on it! i'll share the fully process on it eventually, but long story short the second half was in a sketch/lineart phase for a longggg time (december-february...). i would just stare at it in my drafts. eventually, i came back to it one day and was like...let me at least clean up the lineart. so i did that. then i was like, okay let me at least color Mind. did that. okay let me color Soul...okay im just fixing their color palettes...okay just add that to every panel...okay let me get the background colors....slowly and surely, the comic was getting finished! i tried to tackle it one part at a time. it sounds simple, but i find it's very easy to get overwhelmed with how much you have to Get Done. breaking it down into phases and working through each one really helped keep me from burning out and staying motivated!

another thing that helps is deadlines! self imposed ones, to be exact. and those can be as soft or as serious as you choose, for any time you make art. say an anniversary is coming up, and you want to make something for it! that's massive motivation right there. and sometimes it's something you really to have to push yourself to make. i started my little spree week of posting on a specific day to end on the CCCC 2nd anniversary, and some of my drafts (like the comic and anniversary piece itself) weren't finished yet! insane motivation to finally lock in and finish. but of course, don't break yourself trying to make it either, a date is just a date, and you can meet the deadline as you please (reference). if you would be less stressed being a day or week or so late, by all means! sometimes it's just nice to have your own personal projects to work on in the background of whatever else u have going on.

finally, be self indulgent as hell in your work. find whatever you like to see/make in your art, and do it as much as you want! personally, nothing motivates me in making art more than wanting to see my own art. im pretty egotistical, pretty much all of my shared pieces are stuff i personally thought was cool and had fun making. my favorite things to work on are sketches or lineart, mainly revolving around character interactions, be it comedic or insane. i genuinely just love drawing it so much, i go crazy without it, sometimes it's not so much motivation as much as it is a compelling. which works too. and on the flipside, if you don't want to do something, you don't have to do it! for example, i dislike rendering, so i avoid it as much as possible. free will baybe!!

one final note, don't be afraid to walk away from ideas or pieces...you can always come back to them when the time comes! i make a lot of sketches, but it takes weeks or even months for them to get finished into digital works. and that's not a bad thing, in fact, it even helps you decide what ideas truly intrigue you enough to want to go back to, thus making motivation to keep working on them much more easier.

i ramble a lot, but mostly this is just some advice that helps me personally! follow it as much or as little as you wish, and good luck!! (and tysm for the compliment btw, feel free to absorb the way i draw mouths!!:3 ive studied it from other artists and implemented it in my art, and of course anyone can study from me and implement into their own works!! yippee!!!)

hi ida!!!! sorry i took a couple days to answer this i wanted to wait until i had some time to think about it before i answer! i loooove these questions tho so thank you so much for sending them 💜💜

my favorite part about making gifs is probably coloring and like...that moment when i get the gif to look exactly how i want it to. i like to play around with coloring and try a lot of different things with it and that can be so fun! i think over the last like 6-8 months my coloring has really improved a lot and i've been having a lot of fun learning new ways to do things! but i actually had a really hard time coming up with an answer for this question because i mostly enjoy the entire process! the only part that i don't really enjoy is picking out the frames for each gif. i always start with way too many and then i have to cut stuff out and i hate that part. also it's reaaally hard sometimes to not end up with like 20 gifs cause there's so much i want to include!!!

okay im gonna cheat on this one and give a few things i've learned since i started that have been sooooo valuable to me. first is the importance of having a good quality download to start with. i think my gifs got significantly better when i finally downloaded all of the episodes in 1080p instead of using the screen recording on netflix like i had been before. second sharpening is so important! i did not do any sharpening on my first gifs i made! sharpening makes the gifs loook sooo sharp and crisp and pretty. third and kind of similar to sharpening was learning/figuring out how to use the camera raw filter. there's sooooo much you can do with camera raw filter (coloring sharpening lightening). and finally one thing i learned that i think made my coloring look significantly better was to try not to lighten the gif too much and/or to figure out ways to lighten darker gifs without it messing up the background too much (sometimes when they're lightened too much it will like pixelate the background and it looks awful)

Bloody Dean Throughout the Seasons Set - this one actually came out really good considering the fact that it was made only a month after i first started making gifs! if i remember correctly it's the first set that i ever used sharpening on.

6x20 F+TM King Set - this one is a favorite mostly just because i love the song so much and tmwwbk is one of my favorite episodes. i think some of my favorite sets to make are the ones that i add lyrics to.

2022 Nov 5th Set - i was really happy with how this one came out! it's so hard to get gifs from episodes over different seasons to look the same! and this one had gifs from 12 different seasons! also i think this was the first set i ever made that got over 1000 notes which i remember being really excited about!

Laughing Dean Set - this one is a favorite purely based on the content of the set. it feels like injecting serotonin every time i look at it<3

1x12 Faith Set - another one based on the content of the set. i just love this episode so much.

Season 9 Dean Set - i LOVE the coloring in this set! and season 9 dean is so beloved to me. he is just so beautiful and bloody and sad.

2023 Cas Day Set - another f+tm lyric set! i love the space overlay that i added and the blue-pink of the coloring so much!

4x18 Destiel Every Episode Set - i loooove this scene so much! this gif series has by far been more popular than any of the other gifs that i post and this set is definitely the most popular in the series. no other set has ever even come close to getting 4k notes like this one did. also i really like the purple coloring a lot<3

i cant believe copeland and ftr really had a video promo where they talked about how much they are friends and they love wrestling and they love wrestling with their friends and theyre gonna have such a good time because theyre all friends and theyre wrestling together. im not even exaggerating. this is getting the sims interaction minus-minus from me lads

this is the meat of the challenge: no fanart for 30 days (oh wow lol) 1. drawing categories/prompts instead of IP: it can be *anything*, it can be food, hobbies/professions, folklore/mythology. eg: actual taiko drums instead of taiko no tatsujin characters, cute dinosaurs instead of yoshi, cool hedgehogs instead sonic (lol) 2. IF i happen to wanna draw fanart, it's gotta be at least 100 years old (anything before 1924) eg: drawing fanart of John Tenniel's Alice (1865) and not disney Alice (1951), Albert Lynch's Joan of Arc (1903) and not Clone High Joan (2002). ps: im not sure about famous people yet, but i think ill go with the same idea that theyd have to have been dead before 1924.

here's some background feelings: after having helped promote 2 japanese food festivals and tabled on both its artist alley's, and knowing myself, and having grown up in the age of comic/book to film adaptations and the rebootprequelsequelmagaddon, it's really hard for me not to fanart, even though i trashtalk hollywood all the time for not taking risks and doing original stuff, lo and behold, i do the same. who am i to judge _anything_ when i watched all three star wars sequels in theaters and crushed on kylux for years, i was kneedeep into hannigram, i gave money to the barbenheimer industrial complex. how can i blame RGG for not letting kiryu go when i _cried legit tears of joy_ when pirate majima was announced? (granted, it's not as bad as the kiryu situation lol but this is about ma$cots, not me lol)

i love a lot of characters, a lot of stories, im always jumping from show to show, game to game, and coming back to them. but i wanna go beyond my love for other people's art and be in love with my own, now that im at a better skill and mental state. it might not resonate as much, specially at the japanese festivals im a part of, but i wanna try. and im gonna start slow, i *am* going to draw japanese food, japanese animals, and create my tiny little scenes and see what comes up. i love stickers with every fiber of my being lol so ill always have in mind that ill draw stuff that i would wanna stick on my own sketchbooks and journals. but i need to do this, at least for 30 days. who knows what will happen later, you know? a friend of mine once said that colored pencils are like sugar, and graphite pencils are like veggies. and i feel like fanart and not-fanart is the same. we love fanart, but it's not healthy to only draw fanart... also i love people who delve into IP OCs and stuff, it always seems a lot of fun. i could try that, but i think ill cut my fanart ties cold turkey and then i can figure something out, i dont know lol i could go back to d&d character sheets lol another side note: i went to film school bc i loved watching movies. i wanted to tell stories, but i had no idea how, and i didnt think i had the talent for drawing. i started studying japanese and bullet journaling, bc i had the urge to draw, and those were the mediums that were close enough to drawing i felt i could try. and then hannibal happened, i had a roommate who was learning to watercolor, and i was like, screw it, let me draw hannigram bc i love them lol ive had the opportunity to make some movies, but logistically and creatively, they never felt as good as having the spark of inspiration, sketching, linearting, painting, printing and selling these tiny ass stickers. there is some control freakness in that, sure lol but there's also a need to build confidence in my own abilities, which sadly i didnt have a space for in movie sets... anyway, ill always mourn not having spent my teens drawing, but im making my kid self proud now <3 also i might post my new stickers at some point, i still havent made a pinned post lol but someday, you know so yeah, if anyone's reading this, ty lol TLDR: if you draw, write, sculpt, whatever, anything, and you tend to do fanart, ask yourself if you're fanarting a bit too much, if there's a way of turning your love for these characters/worlds into something different and more you.

what the hell is this fic about you might be asking. thats a great question

hi, under read more so i dont make somebodys dash eighty miles long.

uh this fic started as a joke when my friend and i were like 🤨🏳️‍🌈❓about every single moment sonon and zhijie are in proximity to one another, then it spiraled out of control. many such cases.

despite that being the starting point, the actual crux of this fic is more about how avalanche's sector 7 cell coped after the splinter cell cuts ties with the main branch, and how people (nayo specifically) are feeling about it a year after the fact when shit hits the fan vis-a-vis the plate. it's not really relevant in this part but i promise it makes up most of whats currently written.

cool few things about this fic that arent necessarily super obvious from this wip but im too excited about not to share:

nayo is one of jessies roommates. "but isn't jessies place for aspiring actresses" nayo is their weird extra guy who wants to paint the sets and stuff instead of being on stage. i think it could be fun. and also the drama would be off the rails. imagine having a catastrophic friend-group fission and having to live with one of the people on the other side of the split. except in addition of it being a friend group it's a climate extremist cell, and it's vital that your other two roommates DO NOT find out about it. also you are gay (so much of this fic is unresolved not-requited-but-also-not-unrequited jessie/nayo anguish. hows THAT for a rarepair huh. im in hell)

it's already implied in-game that sonon and zhijie spent some time together in wall market, but my friend was like 'wouldnt it be really funny if the two of them met and had this wild night in wall market before sonon like. actually showed up to the avalanche hideout. like what if zhijie didnt KNOW'. and i was like holy fuck youre a genius

my apologies to polk for fort condor being his only personality trait. i intend to go back and comb through all of his lines to try to glean as much from canon as i can, but for now its all fort condor i guess

its not directly stated but i am also using this to push my insane gamer theory that zhijie is corneo's bastard child. it probably wont come up but my main reasoning is this very pepe-sylvia meme type of conjecture linking the assumption that zhijie frequently hangs out in wall market to him inexplicably knowing that the plate is going to fall. who the hell told him. corneo fucking sucks but i think if he had a child who was in danger of being crushed by the plate fall he'd probably warn him to get out, even if the child in question hates his fucking guts and would prefer not to be associated with him

i love thinking about how throughout most of this, cloud is (checks notes) parachuting off the plate after a high-speed motorcycle chase.

i am so in love with stories where we get a look at what a B-team is up to while the A-team is in the spotlight doing something else entirely, ideally creating absolutely disgusting amounts of tonal whiplash. like what do you MEAN everybody is having the worst day of their lives while cloud is being made to pick flowers and rescue children at the behest of a very pretty girl??? horrible!!! me too please!! i want to play in this space as well!!

and thats what this fic is meant to be: my contributions to the insane shit happening in the background of The Sector Five Reactor Incident as well as aerith dragging cloud on errands with her, both during the day in sector 5 and later on in the evening during their stint in wall market. there is SO MUCH interpersonal nonsense that they will just NEVER know about. but i know! (: and maybe you will too!

yall no im on team fuck wotc so i wanna plug a ttrpg ive played that is decently similar to dnd and id recommend as a cool one to check out if looking for a new system! 

13TH AGE

13th age is a ttrpg system built for a high fantasy setting similar to d&d. its got a lot of similarities to dnd (in fact i believe many of the folks who worked on it worked on older editions of dnd) like a d20 based, class based system, but with a lot of streamlining done to combat as well as fun mechanics to tie your character into the world and game.

some specific details i really enjoyed:

one unique thing: something i enjoy about this that lends itself to character creation well is that every character has ‘one unique thing.’ most of your characters probably already have that, but this is a one or two word sentence that just summarizes that. this is great for both players who get too complicated in their backstories and helps them have a core unique thing (me cough) or characters who don’t super care about backstories come up with something unique even if its not a full shakespearean tragedy of a background

backgrounds: instead of your backgrounds giving you proficiency in certain things, characters have backgrounds with certain modifiers based on the importance to the character. this then lets you use the modifier for things that relate to your background. for example, my character spent years as a thief before the campaign, so she cat burglar +4. any time i picked a lock or did sneaky thief things, i could use my thief +4. another character had a background as librarian, so she got bonuses to speed reading, finding a book in complicated libraries, etc. iirc this character also had a background as a spoken word poet which. while less widely applicable. led to some fun shenanigans with charisma checks for a character who isn’t usually super persuasive. i will note some GMs don’t love this because some players will try to use these backgrounds too broadly and it can slow stuff down since its less spelled out, so be warned, but if you have a good group, its a lot of fun.

no grid based combat: this was the main reason my GM looked into 13th age. she hated grid combat, and in 13th age, rather than specific measurements and distances for spells and moves, everything is either engaged, nearby, or far. i will say there was a bit of a learning curve for the players in this group who were used to having exact distances spelled out, but honestly it was really fun not having to worry so much about exact distances and counting out squares and such.

escalation die: this was something i loved as someone who had a hard time focusing on longer combats. 13th age uses an escalation system to speed up combat - at the end of every round of combat, the escalation die gets a +1 that keeps increasing every round and adds to your attack rolls and damage. this represents the natural tire and fatigue in combat and keeps things moving. after six rounds have passed, it maxes out at +6

there are some other cool things as well such as icons that represent powerful figures in the world, unique abilities and skills that have a similar feel of d&d but fresh and new if youve played d&d to death, but TLDR: check out 13th age if you want a system that feels similar to D&D, but hate grid based and super long combats and want more mechanical weight to your characters history. also its been a few years since ive played so. apologies if i misremembered anything but! 13th age is super fun especially if you want something that feels similar to d&d but with some cool unique features

Listen hear me out- i think I started shipping them a few years ago back during the og fandom days, but since my interest in bendy has been reignited, so has my interest in this ship lol. And im ngl, have you ever noticed how similar Grant’s office is to Sammy’s Sanctuary? They both play that same whispering effect when you enter them, they both have an ink pipe in them, they both have a bendy item in them (sammys bendy plushie and grants bendy clock), both have writing on the wall…

Even just beyond that, its implied they died the same way too, from drinking ink? And how they both seem to put the blame on others for joeys mistreatment (sammys whole “useless sheep” bit in that newspaper and grants “STOP THE WASTERS!!” bit on his office walls). and even though theres like, BARELY ANY GRANT CONTENT IN CANON, he does have a minor connection to the ink demon, as one of the flashbacks in chapter 1 is of the ink demon on level S near his office, and although this probably doesnt mean anything, the fact that the first time we see sammys cult is when we open the door to the archives via a handle we had to get from grants office specifically….👀

Plus just the miscellaneous stuff like grants va being a musician, one whose song was specially placed in sammys office- idk, *marge voice* I just think they’re neat! :)

THATS AN INTERESTING ONE… I’ve seen it around a fair bit lately but it feels recent??

Before I dive in, I do wanna address the ink-drinking – I’m a little biased, since I tend to headcanon the ink-drinking as unique to Sammy, but I feel like Grant also drinking ink is not something that’s implied so much as a headcanon that got popular? We can pretty easily accept that Grant transformed at SOME point, and the shared whispers imply that they were both under some inky influence, but that doesn’t tell us that ink-drinking was to blame. The note in BatDR about Grant looking ill could certainly be used for an ink-drinking headcanon, too, but as far as Evidence I think all it tells us for sure is that Grant was Very Stressed. [also trying to merge BatDR Grant and BatIM Grant into one entity seems messier the longer I think about it but I CANT GET DISTRACTED BY THAT NOW, THATS FOR ANOTHER POST]

ANYWAY, all the little things about this one having a valve in that one’s office and this one being voiced by a guy who did a song that’s in the other one’s office are neat but ultimately I feel like that stuff isn’t want sells a ship, for me – the biggest thing is a compelling dynamic between the characters.

There’s so much between these two that complicates them –

-- good money and hiring his own people were Sammy’s two big asks when he took the Music Director job, so he could easily be a source of financial strain and seen as one of the “wasters” Grant is so frustrated with, and it’s also not hard to imagine Sammy blaming Grant as one of the useless sheep who can’t do his job right once paychecks start coming in late. Add to that Grant being described as having no creativity at all in the Employee’s Handbook, and trying to imagine what he would relate to in Sammy “my special interest is music” Lawrence. Though I don’t know, that one could be fun. Does Grant like music despite not “getting” it? Can Sammy and Grant relate to each other through the intersection of music and math? Or does Grant just conceptualise music as a kind of math, which Joey thinks is boring but Sammy knows is not far off, and Sammy with his partially jazz background is INTRIGUING to Grant because what he’s making sounds good but isn’t following the rules…? IDK, Grant and Sammy learning to understand each other through understanding each other’s work is a neat thought.

On the surface they’re both frustrated men who want things to be under control and are frustrated with Joey’s spontaneity, but while Grant is having a meltdown over WHAT WILL JOEY SAY?, Sammy is screaming about pleasing a god rather than a man and certain that he’s found the one who will Set Them Free. Grant’s characterisation could be taken in a lot of directions, but it’s not hard to imagine him as the phobic to Sammy’s counterphobic.

Which is INTERESTING, because you get a dynamic that seems to work, as Sammy gives the impression of a leader who can offer certainty and something to depend on – and you CAN depend on him – but he’s actually a follower at heart who desperately needs someone to answer to, someone to believe in, and I don’t know if Grant can be that someone. Sammy and Grant BOTH want to be the one behind the scenes with someone else in the spotlight. On the other hand… we know Grant’s massaging numbers and fudging things and illegally hiding assets. It wouldn’t be hard to characterise him with a bit of ruthlessness as well, someone who’s not afraid to break the rules when he feels he has to; while Sammy seems frustrated, overstimulated, and perpetually at odds with a system he doesn’t fit in, Grant is willing to learn the system well enough to bend the rules to his advantage and know how to get away with it.

If you go with this take, you get a pair that could be dangerously effective but also dangerously fragile. I don’t think they would challenge or change each other so much as just reinforce each other’s ruthless caution – as long as they’re in cahoots, they’d be loyal to each other and value no principle above each others’ well-being. But the instant either of them mistrusts the other, they’d combust.

here's the old palanauts logo:

it's... i mean, it exists! it's got the 'naut colors and the underline is neat, but asides from the slightly larger P it's rather flat. there's just not much going on there that's visually interesting. it works, but it's not memorable. this was my first time making a logo and it shows

how do you make it more interesting? BOY HOWDY I'M GLAD YOU ASKED (i am putting this under a cut this is getting ginormous)

THIS one is fun. it's got a font with interesting shapes, it's got color variation, and it has references to two of the characters in the project this is for (the O in Crossing being a power symbol and the O in Limbo being Xines's shirt design) as well as having a background symbol. however it's a bit hard to read because of the shades of grey i used and how sketchy Xines's symbol is, and while the white and blue of the power symbol matches Leon and TIDS's colors it looks really out of place seeing as Xines's symbol is the same grey as the lettering.

this logo is from a while ago and getting redone so im gonna share it, it's another Palanauts one and is when i started figuring out breaking up words and messing with alignment + the added colors for me and jorb and shading, it's still relatively "simple" but it's like. Interesting? i go back to this a lot when im thinking about how to construct stuff. a major thing with this was trying to find a matching font that had similar vibes while still being distinct - Palanauts's logo font is Government Agent from BlamBot (great free font resource! i get a lot of fonts from there and another source i'll rb after this) so i wanted to keep that intact while shaking it up a bit. it looks like i used Orange Fizz here, which is another BlamBot font? which i've paired with stuff before, like in this art i still really like and was my first font fuckery attempt:

which is a REALLY good example of font variation! there's like 3 fonts in here and they all fit together well. there's the normal-looking brown font, the big yellow "shout" font, and then the orange "LOUDER [...] PROUDER" that stands out in a different way. these are also all colors already in the image so it fits together, and there's some overlap while still trying to keep it readable.

the key part of this for me is that the brown and yellow fonts look vaguely similar, just that the yellow one is thicker? i don't know the words to describe it better unfortunately, but there's some sort of visual connection there. and then the orange bottom text is sharp and square and angular and WAY different, but has similar spacing to the brown font so it's not too huge a departure. man i made this back in 2017 and i still really like it

anyway, back to logos! this takes notes from the Crossing Limbo and PalanAUts logos: font mixing, coloring the initials to make it pop more (especially bc i shorten Chasing Velocity to CV a lot), swapping the "O" in Velocity for a star ring because that's Team Sonic's logo in this AU, and past that we've got shading, dark and light outlines, and a drop shadow! looking at this now, the shading on the main text is kinda weird - the initials look fine, but i should've used the same shades as "Chasing" on "Velocity". like i can kinda see what i was going for but it feels a bit Off, idk. without the shine, the bottom half feels way darker and less bright than the top half, which makes it feel disconnected.

this did combine into a fun symbol-logo though! using the star ring (without shading) and the initials from the big logo :D

here we've got 1 font, some celshading, the double outline, and swapping out the "O" in Leontids for a triangle. i made this for my mcyt channel!

this is kinda my go-to: a white and/or or black outline, maybe a drop shadow, or basic shading to make it look a little less like it's just flat text. the main thing is i don't want to overcomplicate stuff because otherwise it's just overwhelming to look at. it's supposed to be readable above all else.

the first Rescue logo is fun! it's got a left-to-right gradient, it's got some shading and an outline, and it's got some font mixing. there's 3 different fonts in the "Rescue" bit, and then a 4th font for the subtitle. there's some messing with contrast (especially on the subtitle), and also wiggling the letters a little bit so they're at different elevations (and enunciating that with the color swatches behind them). i wasn't super happy with it though - there's a small handful of fonts i rely on a lot, and this uses nearly all of them, so i'm tooling around trying to figure something out with more variety.

this is a horrendous image. BUT it's unfortunately an insight into how my brain approaches these things! i grabbed some funky-looking fonts, picked out the ones that looked similar to each other while still being readable (this ended up being Gameboy Gamegirl for the R and bigup for everything else), and ran into an issue with the "E" not being very readable so i um. well.

took a bit from Gameboy Gamegirl's E and spliced it into the bigup one. this is hell. i don't know if this will make it to the final version. i also connected the R and S, tried to keep some of the messing with elevation, and added in some dots on the bottom to try and fill in that blank space.

after a lot of hell, we arrive at:

this is still a HUGE wip but you can kinda see where i'm going with this! added the gradient and shading from the old logo, spliced in the subtitle, messed with the outline a bit to try and make the R a bit more readable, and then consigned myself to the fact that cleaning this up is going to be hell on earth. but this is what a mockup looks like!

i use the magic wand tool a LOT, btw. usually with something like this:

so that when i select something it looks like this:

and that's how i'm able to color in like that. i've been using that trick a bit lately, heh.

oh my god i just had a heart attack, i hit "esc" out of instinct and thought i lost this post. i'm going to fucking blow up. ok. let's try and wrap this up

this is what Sol's logo looks with just the "raw" font! again trying to do font mixing, but this time with a focus on it being more distinct like in the Louder And Prouder drawing: his first name is big bold blocky letters with a distinctive look, and then his last name is smaller and less complex-looking. also it lined up nicely :>

however when i filled in the color it was hard to read (mainly the S), so i manually added the highlight so it was readable for me! and also sell the 3D effect a bit more.

the blue worked well in the original art because it had a lot of yellows and oranges and i wanted it to stand out, but when reworking it into a stand-alone logo i ended up switching it to Sol's yellow/orange/red/purple because that has a stronger connection to him visually. it DID mean losing the cyan entirely, so i might add it back in in his last name? i dunno! i'm just screwing around.

TK's went through several iterations:

not shown: the sheer amount of colors the first one went through, the constant struggles with getting the outline to work, the constant struggles with getting the shading to work... there was also a lot of trouble with font matching, both in "getting the fonts to work with each other" and "getting the fonts to match TK's vibe" because that was the most important part of this whole exercise. eventually i settled on using the same font as the first go but with different shading, a subtle gradient, and her shirt color as "neutral ground" while her first and last name have the split eye colors i was initially aiming for. there was also some messing around with balancing what pieces go where - Sol's worked out fine from the get-go, but TK's looked unbalanced until i figured out how to make it look... well, still unbalanced, but unbalanced on purpose. the K in Kurone lines up with the K in TK, and Tank ends at the edge of the T in TK. it's her initials!

also the font used for her full name is the same font as the score from Sonic Adventure 2, so i did a quick google and found this:

so i used that as reference! the lines are gaussian blurred and set to Add with a low transparency. it's fun.

compared to the existential nightmare that was TK, Zyd's was pretty easy, hah. i picked a font:

but i didn't like how the Y looked, so i dug through my fonts to find a similar-looking font with a Y i liked more. after that, i put on the same gradient as her feathers, then added those little ring circle things using the circle tool to match her body markings and she was good to go!

anyway, so what about that Palanauts logo from the start?

here's the 2023 version. still using the same font, but the P has been made larger, there's some shading using the magic wand tool trick, it's got a drop shadow to make it pop out a bit and a thick white outline so it'll be clearly visible regardless of backdrop, and the underline has been split up and is now a bit misaligned to have some visual interest. and also accidentally ended up looking like boss healthbars sorta.

it's still a very simple logo, but that is one hell of a glow-up.
