How to rewild yourself but stay human (humane?) in the process? It’s so easy to feel anger and frustration looking at the harm humans do to the environment that you cannot but relate to the heroine of the book, who is trying to reintroduce wolves into the unwelcoming Highlands. This is what we hold inside, what we take with us, the way we look after each other.” 🐺✨🐺 Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy is a deeply beautiful and unsettling novel set in the Scottish Highlands. Following Inti as she tries to reintroduce wolves back into nature, as herself and her team try and deal with the concerns, and later anger, of the locals as tragedies occur. I absolutely loved this book; the tension, the mystery, the semi-slow burn romance, the climate and conservation aspect of the novel and the family drama. Everything tied together beautifully to make a deeply complex and sometimes dark look into both the condition of the world around us and human conditions. The relationships between Inti and the people around her were often complicated, but also often beautiful. The relationship between Inti’s parents and their children, and the way that both Inti and Aggie take care of each other (or try to), and the way that Inti and Duncan keep meeting and falling apart together gave the book its incredibly evocative and emotional tension, while Inti’s relationship with her wolves, and the insuring tragedies that occur give the book its thriller quality. This book captured and held my attention from the very first page, and it’s not a book I’ll soon forget. Nelson wanted to include his review of Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy. “Inti Flynn is a scientist trying to reintroduce wolves into the Scottish Highlands. Her efforts to rewild a dying landscape are met with fierce opposition from the locals, who fear for their safety and their way of life.” I listened to the audiobook on this one. Great performance from Saskia Maarleveld. The story is wonderfully written. Inti is definitely a character you would not want to mess with - even when she’s making some awful decisions. Inti and others had to deal with past trauma - lots of it. I struggled at times with the message of this book. Not a fan when authors get preachy about how “this is the only way” I did like the setting. The Scottish Highlands are a place l’d love to visit one day. And any Moms that read this - please tell me how your delivery experience differed from Inti’s 😮 Lots of positive reviews for this one. ✨ Book Review ✨ Once There Were Wolves is a book that is set on the remote highlands of Scotland. A beautiful place to reintroduce 14 wolves in the wild. Not a lot of people agree with that and then someone dies. Who could it be? Was it one of the wolves? Or someone? This story was good and entertaining. A book you might wanna pick up! It's been a little over a week and Jackson misses his "big brother". Riley was always a little easier to pose with books but my remaining #oldmandog Jackson tolerates me okay. #OnceThereWereWolves is a beautifully written book that will make you chew on its poetic prose while tackling hard issues like domestic violence and climate change. Inti's mirror-touch synesthesia made her empathetic in the extreme and while she was sometimes an unreliable narrator you never doubted her passion and protectiveness of both the wolves and her twin sister Aggie. Once There Were Wolves is such a beautiful novel that it confirmed Charlotte McConaghy as one of my new favourite authors that I discovered this year. Thanks to my amazing friend Jenni over at @tarheelreader for introducing me to her and for buddy reading this with me. ⁣ ⁣ Like the authors first novel Migrations, this novel is focused very much on the environment and the effect that humans have had on it. We are introduced to Inti and her twin sister Aggie who have just moved to the Scottish Highlands for Inti to carry on her work re-introducing a pack of wolves back into the area. ⁣ ⁣ Both Inti and Aggie are struggling from incidents in their past and attempting to re-build their lives and heal. However, re-introducing the wolves comes with its own set of problems and when a farmer is found dead it precipitates a chain of events. Inti refuses to believe that one of her wolves caused the death of the local man. Worryingly, if the death wasn’t the fault of a wolf, who was it? Could Inti now be in terrible danger?⁣ ⁣ When I first started to read this book, I was expecting gloriously rich writing as I remembered how gorgeous and smooth Migrations had been to read. However I wasn’t expecting to be completely bowled over by the plot which in places, read like a literary thriller. Additionally, the author has such a gift for getting right under their characters skin to the point where the reader feels like they really know them. ⁣ ⁣ I cannot recommend or shout about this book or author enough. If you’re an animal lover, interested in the environment or want to be captivated by a story and its characters, this is the book for you. Hello everyone and happy Monday! Hope your week has started off a loss less hectic than mine!! 😅 It’s book haul day hooray 😁 It’s funny, I’ve hauled so many books recently that I’m starting to read them before I haul them 😂 This is true in the case of The Bohemians and Once There Were Wolves which I’ve buddy read recently with lovely Jenni from @tarheelreader They were both wonderful and I’ll have reviews of them up in the next few weeks. The Bohemians is the fictionalised story of world-renowned female photographer Dorothea Lange. This is also the story of San Francisco in the roaring 1920’s and it made for fantastic reading and lots of discussion! Once There Were Wolves is by an author I’ve only discovered this year and has fast become one of my favourites. It follows Inti who is working with a group to re-introduce wolves into Scotland’s Highlands. Finally, I saw The Heights on @hookedfrompageone page and I thought it looked so intriguing that I couldn’t resist it. The narrator describes seeing a man in flats opposite who they recognise. However they know for a fact that the man they see is dead. Because they killed him. 😱😳 I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments.
