DC x DP fanfic Idea: Gotham Gossip
Meta-human rights are a touchy topic in Gotham. While the city is known for Batman's view on them, it's also known for Bruce Wayne's viewpoint.
The Dark Knight did not welcome Metas, while the Light Knight worked tirelessly to employ charities and programs to support Metas. Both men- if Batman was a man- influenced Gotham so intensely that their viewpoints became the face of the public.
Even people outside of Gothman learned what "Are you a Dark pawn or a Light pawn?" meant when it was spoken about during national debates.
Really, it was no surprise that Batman and Wayne got caught up in a rather explosive public argument over the subject. Or rather, Wayne yelled at Batman during a hostage situation when his party boat got taken by a group of masked men.
Thankfully, Batman was able to save everyone on board, and although he didn't stick around to argue with Wayne, it was noted that Batman seemed intrigued by a few of Wayne's passionate rants. A few reporters were excited to point out there may be a chance of growth within the vigilante, but it was overshadowed by gossip rags that used this incident to make up a wild rumor of Wayne being a bitter ex with Batman.
This rumor runs for months, with various people posting online proof of a relationship. It sparks debate and anger, with other people responding by fact-checking and countering the "proof." Eventually, the argument moves away from Meta-human rights and falls into celebrity gossip, which has Wayne steaming.
People ignore his passionate activism to better the lives of Metas, only watching his speeches, marches, protests, and donations to various charities to gain new proof of his nonexistent romance that may or may have been in his early twenties when he mysteriously vanished to see the world.
That's when the video comes out.
A young teenager wrote a song parody of what was happening. A soft acoustic guitar accompanied his short words, accusing the masses of caring more about a wealthy man's pants being on or not than the lives of his people.
This young teenager is Danny Fenton, a known meta from a small town in Illinois. This quickly turned into people attacking the boy, who released another song using the hateful comments as new lyrics.
Wayne reposts one of his sons, claiming it a masterpiece, which is when one fan notices the similarities between the two. She makes a post talking about how Wayne and Fenton could be father and son as a joke, expecting people to take it seriously.
Overnight, the internet finds out that Fenton was, in fact, adopted into his current family after being surrendered at a fire station anonymously. More and more people started to notice the similar features between the rich man and the small-town singer until a video of Fenton using his powers was leaked.
Fenton's power is invisibility. This resembles another well-known Gotham dweller who can appear and disappear through the city's shadows. It's not long before Fenton is being called the love child of Batman and Wayne.
It leads to so much media attention and harassment aimed towards Fenton that Wayne steps in. He offers to take a paternity test to finally put the rumors to rest and let the young boy vanish from the limelight (should he stop writing songs).
The only problem?
The test is positive. Wayne is Fenton's biological son. The whole nation loses their minds when it's leaked by a very regrettable intern at the clinic where the test was done. (To be fair, the intern's email was hacked, so when she scanned the papers for herself, they were able to steal them)
Worse, Joker thinks it would be hilarious to kidnap Wayne's newly discovered son and, on live TV, give him another paternity test against Batman. The clown is laughing hysterically while his men prepare the results, only to become more gleeful when it's a match again.
Fenton is the son of both the Dark Knight and the Light Knight. It matters little that Batman's DNA is slightly messed up, as various people already suspected him of not being human.
This just proves Fenton is not a meta-human but rather half-human and whatever the hell Batman is. Joker is having a ball reading out the results, proclaiming he would help Fenton meet his biological grandparents with his one guarantee.
His words are cut off when Fetnon- unknown to the viewing public- escapes his bonds and swings an axe from the emergency fire station inside the aged wearhouse at Joker's neck. The clown collapses to the ground dead, the boy bathed in his blood, and the half-finished joke is cut off by the sound of choking blood etching across every screen in Gotham.
The remaining goons and Fenton stare at each other in stun silence while one is brave enough to rasp. "But Batman doesn't kill."
"Do I look like my absent father to you? Besides, Joker venom is a war crime. I'm within my rights, and if I'm not, I would have killed him again anyway."
Fenton quickly outshines his fathers in the public's eye because no matter where one stood on the Meta Rights, everyone stood on the "Kill the Joker" debate.

EU Kennzeichen / License Plates / Number Plates
in another post I mentioned that my fiance and I like to talk about where the cars around us come from when we're on the Autobahn, and that that's not possible in all european countries
for those outside the EU or outside of Germany I thought it might be very slightly interesting to go into more detail!
European license plates all look the same at first glance:
they're white (in a few countries yellow), have a blue stripe on the left with the EU stars at the top and 1-3 letters in white or yellow for the country at the bottom. The other (big) lettering is usually black. Sometimes there are flags/icons on the right side too.
Tumblr media
You'll find that some other european countries have similar designs for their license plates, though not necessarily on purpose. In the UK you'll see both non-EU license plates and EU-license plates (with "GB" as the country code), though the latter is only permitted if the car was fitted with it before 2021.
Before talking more about German license plates, I want to note that there are various exceptions to the standard EU-license plate. Temporary license plates, plates for very old vehicles, for military/police/state vehicles, etc. often have a design that is different from the standard, including letter color, stripes left and right, etc.
Deutsche Kennzeichen
(i'll only talk about standard car license plates, thus ignore old timers, motor bike plates, etc.)
German license plates look like this:
Tumblr media
It is always 1-3 letters, another 1-2 letters, 1-4 numbers
In total, it may only be 8 digits long
Electric cars can end in an "E" (optional)
The two letter groups are separated by space for round stickers. On the rear plate are two stickers: the "TÜV-Plakette" on the top (indicates when the next mandatory vehicle check is due), and a sticker for the Stadtkreis or Landkreis that registered the plate on the bottom. The front plate only has the Kreis-sticker.
First letter group
The first letter group always shows the Verwaltungsbezirk (≈ administrative division/district in which the car is registered (because license plates are always registered to a vehicle, not a person, as apparently is the case in other european countries)).
This is what I meant with talking about "where a car is from". The first couple letters tell you where a car is registered (and usually then too, that the owner lives in that area; you're obliged to register your car in your new district if you move, but idk how much that is really enforced)
There are more than 700 districts. Sometimes these are singular large cities (like Berlin, Cologne, ...), often they are larger (especially rural) areas.
Most people have one or two districts with which they associate bad driving. I come from the north-west of Baden-Württemberg. When I see a shitty driver and they have a "PF" or "GER" district code, I always "of fucking course it's a fucking Pforzheimer/Germersheimer"
There's also some silly mnemonics some people employ (like my fiance who points at every SÜW car (district: Südliche Weinstraße) and says "sie üben wieder" ("they're practicing again").
Beyond getting annoyed at vague areas, it's also just a trivia game to pass the time. Occasionally we'll ask one another if we know a certain district code and, if not, google it.
You'll also learn new ones if you're driving and notice an influx of a certain district code on plates (like how I learned that PS is Pirmasens yesterday)
The letters of a code usually correspond to letters in the full name. One exception is plates of Hansestädte. Hansestädte are cities that belonged to a collective of trade cities in the middle ages, primarily port cities or cities along big rivers (e.g. Rhein, Neckar, Elbe). Six of them (200 overall, 70 with active hanseatic politics) have their district code start with an "H":
HB - Hansestadt Bremen
HH - Hansestadt Hamburg
HGW - Hansestadt Greifswald
HL - Hansestadt Lübeck
HST - Hansestadt Stralsund
HRO - Hansestadt Rostock
HWI - Hansestadt Wismar
(Bremen is why Heidelberg, a large city in the north of BaWü is labeled HD instead of HB (which would be natural since it's two words Heidel-Berg))
December 2023 also saw a first in German license plates: a city is close to running out of combinations and thus cars in München (Munich) can now have one of two district codes: M and MUC (new)
Second letter group
The second group of letters can be chosen freely by the person registering a car. There are certain forbidden combinations, most because of nazi-associations (KZ, HJ, SS,), some of them vary from Bundesland to Bundesland. Singular letters are sometimes forbidden because of what they spell with the letters of the first letter group.
Of course a general restriction is that there can't be two identical license plates.
Beyond these restrictions, the second letter group is of course often used to make words (if the district code allows), though often with incorrect spelling. In Karlsruhe (district code: KA), common license plate words are KA LT (cold), KAOS (das Chaos - the chaos), KA OT (der Chaot - the chaotic person), KA TZE/KA ZE (die Katze - the cat), KA LB (das Kalb - the calf (animal)) ...
If making a word is not possible or desired, many people instead go for initials (of themselves, them and their partner, their children, etc)
Number group
The numbers are also free to choose, though there are also forbidden number combinations (14, 88, ...). Additionally, the limit of 8 digits must be observed.
People often chose personally significant dates for better memorabilty.
Relevance
Is any of this important or necessary to know for tourists? Absolutely not.
But maybe other Germans want to share where the shitty drivers in their area come from (if that's not too personal, there is of course some information to be derived from this) OR what fun words they've seen or know of!
Personal favorites sind DEL LE (District: Delmenhorst; "dent") und PIR:AT (Pirna; "pirate")

Right now I'm struggling to do like...any homework. One of the homework assignment types is readings, which I use a little trick to get done. This trick addresses the facts that I have to focus to read it, and I also have to be able to tell myself that I really did read every word.
So I just open up a little Notepad instance off to the side, and rewrite the reading word for word as I read it. If I forget a sentence or otherwise lose pace, I can just look back at the Notepad instance to see where I left off. Do I internalize any of the info I read? No. I am focusing entirely on typing. In fact, after writing, I do a quick skim of the reading to actually understand it.
I periodically delete my transcription, as it's really just a focusing tool and not a note-taking method. And, after writing anywhere from 2-10 paragraphs, I can finally just focus on the reading and finish it out without doing this manual-copying thing.
If it works, it works.

Ravi being the one who tells Buck that Eddie got a job offer from the firehouse in El Paso.
Ravi - who is the physical representation of Bucks abandonment issues - telling Buck that Eddie got a firefighter job in El Paso…
Ravi being the one to tell Buck that Eddie has been offered a job that will make it even less likely that Eddie will return to LA - because he has now got a house he owns, his kid back and will be back doing a job that he loves and is good at - making Buck feel even more abandoned than he already is.
I love the way the show is using Ravi to explore and deal with Bucks abandonment issues!
but now Bobby - his father figure - has died and Buck has no idea how to deal with his grief but he’s been holding it together the only way he knows how (with all his online tests and using charts and numbers to determine everyone else’s grief so he doesn’t have to deal with his own because he doesn’t know how and cant let himself break because Bobby told him the others were going to need him and he can’t fail Bobby and his last words), and now he’s discovered Eddie has a job offer in El Paso - something that will take Eddie away from him forever (in his mind).
Eddie’s presence back in LA - in the house (even if its Bucks furniture in there and Eddie is on the couch) has been a safety blanket that Buck has been clinging to and it is now going to come to an end. Eddie’s going to go back to the new life he’s been building in El Paso - that Buck isn’t a part of (physically) leaving Buck abandoned
He’d been able to deal with Eddie going to El Paso because while Buck was subletting Eddie house there was a chance that Eddie would come back,
#he’d been able to deal with Eddie moving to El PAso because while Buck was subletting his house there was a chance that Eddie (and Chris)#would return to LA and Buck.
