I know it's kinda contrary to the whole point but imagine if Joan's sister also became immortal at the same time as Joan, both assuming the other was buried under all the rubble (iirc?) And just each go their separate ways.

Joan's sister, is, of course, immediately found by and joins up with the old guard.

So continues Joan's curse of having THE WORST LUCK EVER. at this point it's just a joke to her.

Joan got up and left the church, forced to leave her sister behind. Andy was there when Adina (sister) woke up and immediately helped her out, hiding her so no one would see she had come back to life but promising to come back soon. Then of course the rest of the guard come and introduce themselves, their whole deal, and ask if she wants to come with. Adina doesn't have anything to return to. She says yes.

Joan and Adina both going through the "my sister is dead but I'm alive" survivor's guilt NOT KNOWING THEY'RE BOTH ALIVE.

Joan is out there, trying to navigate life as a lonely immortal. Adina is out there, hanging with the guard (having her lesbian awakening because having a gaggle of immortal queers around helps her realize some stuff). Each going on living, but still remembering her sister. Getting miniature portraits painted of the other so they remember...

Joan is doing her best to live a normal life. Adina, never a warrior, still learns to use a weapon from the best. Adina suffers the loss of Quynh just like the rest, losing yet another sister. Joan loses anyone she ever tries to connect with, and keeps on going anyway because what other choice does she have?

Then Booker comes around and meets Joan as in the Joan Universe Canon there are TWO ways this could go: 1) Adina - cursed the same as Joan with Shit Luck - doesn't see Joan in her dreams of Booker, only every other fucking detail BUT that and doesn't wonder about the woman the others see in their dreams of the new immortal. Which means that it takes another 200ish years to reunite, when Nile finally comes around. Joan knocks on their front door, sees Nile, sees her long dead sister who looks like she's the one seeing a fucking ghost. she faints.

2) Adina DOES see her and IMMEDIATELY kicks into gear because THAT'S HER SISTER!!!!! COME ON GUYS WE GOTTA GO TO RUSSIA RIGHT THE HELL NOW!!!! and is basically a one-man army getting everyone to move!!! (And then they don't get to Booker before he and Joan split up and Adina is fucking feral, grabbing poor starving Booker by the shoulders and demanding to know where she went and has to be restrained before she just takes off by herself the minute she gets an answer.)

It's a tearful reunion either way, followed by extremely complicated feelings of being together again after so long. but the sisters are back together again. 💖

Okay but what if Joan stumbles on the first immortal dog. What if she had that going for her. Wouldn't that be nice?

Also I think it'd be hilarious for the team to learn about this and be like. Wtf. Have there been immortal animals this whole time and we never noticed?? Do they dream about each other???

you're so right. Joan deserves that! that would be nice! it would be so nice in fact that I was looking up dog breeds and histories for like, 20 minutes to write this.

It took approximately three days at Joan's house for Sami to warm up to the strangers suddenly inside his home. It took a two more days of Andy, Booker and Nile taking turns throwing a ball for him to fetch or pulling on a rope for a game of tug-of-war for Sami to decide he actually liked them. Joe and Nicky - who were more cat-people at heart - gained his affection differently, going on walks with Sami and Joan and giving him treats and pets.

However, it was clear that Joan would always and forever be his favourite. She was the one he always ran to first. She was the one he followed to bed at night and into the kitchen in the morning. She was the one he actually listened to when she told him to heel, sit and stay. It was clear that they had a close bond, Joan and her gigantic mutt who acted like a lapdog whenever he was with her.

"How old is he?" Nile asked one afternoon. They were all lazing about on Joan's back porch, lounging in whatever chairs Joan could find and absorbing the sun.

"Around 310, at least," Joan said.

The others laughed or rolled their eyes, grinning. Until a few seconds passed by and they realized Joan wasn't smiling or laughing with them. She hadn't even looked up from her book.

Everyone turned to look at each other. Then they all turned to look at Andy. Andy turned to look at Joan.

"What?"

Joan looked up from her book. She still wasn't smiling. "310. He's like us. Immortal."

A nervous laugh bubbled up in Nile's throat. "You're kidding."

Booker looked down at Sami, currently focused on gnawing on some kind of rawhide dog treat, and thought how suspiciously similar Sami was to the dog Booker remembered from 1812 - the big, white-furred beast who had growled and snapped at him every time Booker got too close to his mistress in the earlier days of them traveling together - and wasn't so sure.

"I'm not kidding," Joan said. "I've had him since the early 1700s."

Silence.

"What?"

Joan shrugged at Andy's question. "I don't really know. I got a job on a farm... a shepherd. Sami was the guard dog. And one day the flock got attacked by a wolf. Sami drove it off, but he got... hurt."

A crease appeared between Joan's eyes as she watched Sami. No one spoke.

"He was a good dog," she said quietly. "So I stayed with him until he passed. And then I watched as his wounds healed and he got back up. He licked my face and went right back to work. I must have sat there for twenty minutes before I could stand up and follow him."

"Must have been a shock," Joe agreed. Joan snorted.

"Oh, yes. And after that, I noticed he wasn't getting any older, so when I left that job, I paid the farmers for him. Figured the two of us should stick together."

She smiled at Sami, who remained ignorant of anything outside of his treat - especially how his mere existence was blowing the minds of five out of the six- seven immortals on the porch with him.

"The fuck?" Andy was the one who finally expressed what they were all thinking. "A dog?"

"How's that for 'everything happens for a reason', Nicky?" Booker asked. "Any reason you can think of for an immortal pet?"

While Nicky stuck his tongue out at Booker, Nile asked, "But seriously, yeah, what's the purpose of that? Does this mean there are more immortal animals out there and we just don't know?"

"I don't know the answer to that," Joe said, "but clearly, Sami has a purpose."

He gestured to Joan and did not elaborate.

Sami let out a soft woof as though agreeing. Joan smiled.

In the course of this week I finished rereading Fourth Wing and Iron Flame and I started Onyx Storm yesterday and I’m trying not to read it fast because I’m not ready to move on to other books but I also neeeeed to know what happens😭

What is going on:

Due to the ARC that tevis cannot handle it basically fried his brain multiple times beforehand when not around the warlock onyx. When onyx finally see this first hand she decides to give part of her void to help him no longer struggle with the pain of arc.

Void has kinda kept to himself since he came home. He gets along with everyone, sure, but he hasn’t really made any friend-friends, you know? I kinda thought he would just be my little loner guy, but Ansel has kind of changed that.

The minute I saw Ansel’s sweet face in his listing photo, I thought “I bet he and Void would get along.” It’s only been a few days, but it looks like I was right. Ansel is very gentle and patient, which Void seems to be very drawn to. Hopefully, they can continue on their path to becoming good buddies.

Meet one of the first members of Shatter Squad: Bombshell!

If his name didn't already give it away, he is the demolitions expert of his squad. Which is kind of funny, given that he is blue-yellow colorblind and he sucks at remembering which color is which.

He can disarm bombs pretty easily even with his visual impairment. Though, there have been times where he arms one of his bombs for training with his squad but forgets which wire is which because he (for some reason) uses blue and yellow wires to arm it.

Also, when he was first painting his armor, he accidentally painted it the 212st yellow instead of the 501st blue. Rex was over it, Cody was unimpressed, and his squad will never let him live it down.

Personality wise, he's pretty snarky and playful, but he'll quickly drop that to be completely serious when he needs to be. Deadly serious. The switch left his squad speechless the first time they were out in the field.
