Ship: Nepeta x Feferi

Ship Song: 'Ruby Rider' from the show Steven Universe

Ok ok ok, this one takes some explaining! Set in a timeline where the two unfuse and the dream bubbles are no more, Nepeta has become exhausted about being used for the narrative's whims, always brushed off as an unimportant character.

She decides she wants to live her life outside of whatever new BS the other 'more important' characters churn up; to live off-grid, focusing only on being happy with beloved.

Feferi, instead, sees their new life as a chance to come back to the forefront and to become engaged hands-on with the reformation and change she wanted to see in Alternia. She would not be empress again, but she jumps at the chance to be a voice weighing in on the humanitarian sides of rebuilding troll civilization.

At odds, the two keep fighting and trying to convince the other to stay with them doing what they believe is best, but it just can't work out. Eventually, Feferi has to break it off to focus on her work, and Nepeta bitterly goes to live life by herself.

She gets exactly what she wanted; peace, adventure, fulfillment from a day's hard work. She can sustain herself and the beasts she's learned to tame for fun... but it doesn't give her any satisfaction. She misses Feferi too much.

She wants, more than anything, to get back with her... even if it means that she's once again thrown into outlandish fanfiction-like situations. At least then, she'd still be with her.

Years later, she learns about human marriage from Rose and Kanaya after they pay her an unexpected visit, and it stays on her mind. A ritual that shows a commitment to staying in redrom with one another, till their deaths? It's fantastical... and very romantic.

It's exactly the push she needed to go find Feferi again. She makes the goal to get her back, propose, and to never leave her side again.

Steven Universe

Steven is such an amazing character. All the characters are well done, and their progression is amazing. So are the songs. My favorite ones by far are the intro (We Are The Crystal Gems), Love Like You, Ruby Rider, It's Over Isn't it? (basically the entire original series soundtrack), Happily Ever After (Reprise and original), and the personal character songs in the movie all together. There's not much singing in Steven Universe Future (from what I can remember) which sucks personally for me, because their personal voices are so beautiful and just amazing in general. Also, This version of Steven???

2. EPIC: The Musical

Jorge Rivera-Herrans is amazing, and awesome. Telemachus is my favorite character, personally, mostly because like- goofy goober man.

3. Ride The Cyclone

HA! The things I could say about this musical are indefinite. Ocean O'Connell Rosenberg is probably one of the most well done characters beside the entire rest of cast. Ocean started off being that preppy jerk you hate, but ended up being one of my favorites because of how she grows from being the character who thinks she deserves the prize because she's better than everyone else, but ends up giving it up. My other favorite character is Constance Eleanor Blackwood. She grows up to be ashamed for being the daughter of the mayor, she is ashamed of her town, but in the end, she ends up excepting that she lived a happy life. Oh, by the way, they are choir kids, who died in a roller coaster incident on the Cyclone in Uranium City Saskatchewan, Canada. Also, there's queer representation in it (he wishes he lived in a life where he could love a man passionately without caring about id the people around him worrying that he'd be shamed... by being a woman of the night in Post-War France.) Anyways, 10/10, would recommend to everyone I meet. Also, unpopular opinion, Space Age Bachelor Man did NOT eat up.

Shipping Deep Dive-Part 2: Garnet!

As usual, Read the pinned disclaimer on my page for the rules of the Shipping Deep Dives. Also as usual there WILL be MAJOR spoilers for the story and characters discussed in this post! If that is a concern to you PLEASE leave and come back once you’ve read/watched the story being discussed. Thank you!

So…Garnet from Steven Universe. Another one of my early ships that I still love to this day. I cannot start this Deep Dive without stating I LOVE STEVEN UNIVERSE! It was like MY CHILDHOOD SHOW. This could be a post on its own so I’ll keep it brief. Steven Universe is a show of amazing love and skill. It has amazing art, characters, story, and music. The story and characters especially stand out as being masterpieces. Each is so deep in motivation and growth. Steven Universe as a whole deals with deep and mature themes most shows aimed for younger audiences don’t touch. This is best exemplified in the character Garnet.

WARNING THE REAL BIG BIG SPOILERS start beyond this point! CAUTION ADVISED!

Garnet is one of the four main Crystal Gems in the series. It can be easily argued that after Rose Quartz dies she is the default leader. She is a very interesting and down right cool character! Her design is very distinct. And her reformations get better and better! Personality wise she starts off as very mysterious and stoic. She is the strong rock of the team that everyone relies on. Garnet is also a fusion. Which means she is the combination of two Gems in one being. Being a full time fusion Garnet represents love and a healthy relationship. While Garnet herself is literally a ship, I’ll be talking specifically about her two components: Ruby and Sapphire.

Ruby and Sapphire start out as a pair of Gems that are only what the Diamond Authority made them to be. Ruby is a guard/servant to Sapphire. Their relationship really is just that. One incident during the Gem War changes this forever. Sapphire can see into the future and sees a future where she is to be killed. Ruby who is her guard interferes with this future. She saves Sapphires life. That decision ultimately changes their lives. They fuse for the first time. They start their journey in love and as Garnet.

Starting with Ruby. Ruby is a character who is very impulsive and hot headed. This makes sense as her Gem’s purpose in Gem society is to be a guard for higher ranking Gems. She is meant to be strong physically and emotionally. It’s sad but she is meant to put herself on the line for whoever she is assigned to protect. When she’s first introduced this is very much how she acts. She is impulsive and angry. Especially in the arc when Pearl lies to Garnet and to Ruby/Sapphire. Ruby’s response is to be (rightfully) angry about the situation. She literally is flaming with anger. But she doesn’t stay this way. She grows to be more calm and in control pf her temper. Her arc in the episode “Ruby Rider” shows this change. She grows past her intended role and starts thinking for herself. She finds independence. But i. The end she chooses Sapphire. Who, yes is who she was “made” for. But Ruby changes the relationship to be fully romantic and no longer just obligated.

Next is Sapphire. She is the balance to Ruby’s fire being ice themed. She even has ice powers to contrast Ruby’s fire. Sapphire in personality is very cold and closed off (much like Garnet was originally). She deals with conflict objectively and without emotion. Her role in Gem society is to be a court advisor. She has future vision that allows her to see possible outcomes of the future. While this is a useful ability, it causes her to view emotional conflicts as unimportant as she looks towards when the conflicts are already passed and not how the people/Gems feel at the present. She doesn’t mean to come off as cold, she’s just trying to be mature. Her development is focused on becoming more aware of others’ feelings in the present. She learns to consider the feelings of Ruby and the other Crystal Gems. Not so much to care, but to show she cares instead of just acting like everything is fine.

Now back to Garnet. Garnet as a fusion is the mix of Ruby and Sapphire. This is present in the design, but is most relevant to how Garnet acts. Garnet’s personality is a highlight reel of sorts of the good and bad of both Ruby and Sapphire. She has Ruby’s strength and stability. She also shares Ruby’s temper to an extent, but it is balanced out with Sapphire’s personality. Garnet takes after Sapphire in how she is calm, and looks to the future for the best outcome. Garnet shares both Ruby and Sapphire’s love for each other. Garnet literally is Ruby and Sapphire’s love for each other. That’s why they are fused all the time. Fusion in Steven Universe is the representation of a relationship, in Garnet’s case romantic. Garnet develops as Ruby and Sapphire do individually. As Ruby and Sapphire mature and grow closer, Garnet grows stronger emotionally.

The Rose Quartz reveal arc and the Wedding arc are the most important for Garnet’s development. The reveal that Rose Quartz was Pink Diamond (Their worst enemy) shook Garnet to her core. She didn’t question it and didn’t know. This causes Ruby and Sapphire to split. Their reactions are actually reversed from how they reacted to Pearl tricking them earlier in the series. They reclaim it for themselves and not something Rose told them to be. Garnet truly becomes her own relationship!

"Escapism" - We're opening with a Steven Universe classic! Lovely Rebecca Sugar with solo guitar. :)

2. Adventure Time's "I'm Just Your Problem"! With Jeff Liu and Ben Levin joining on guitar and bass.

3. Adventure Time's "Good Little Girl" is next!! Rebecca says they wrote it a loooong time ago.

4. The new song from the Fionna and Cake show, "Part of the Madness," gets going with another band member added: Louie Zong!

5. Jeff Ball joins the crew to play "Love Like You" from Steven Universe! Rebecca shouts out Infloresce Records.

6. Next, with the same musicians, we get a swanky version of "Other Friends" from the Steven Universe movie!

7. Continuing on the Spinel theme, we also get "Drift Away" from the Steven Universe movie. Rebecca on guitar is lovely. At this point they've got $8000 on the donations meter.

8. "Bacon Pancakes" is next! An old Adventure Time classic. :) Fun instruments added.

9. Kate Micucci (voice of Sadie and awesome musician) joins the group! "Mr. Rogers," Kate's single, gets a plug. She also has "Bucket of Beans" coming out later this week. They knock out "Looking Forward" from Steven Universe Future. Rebecca Sugar includes some lovely harmony above Kate!

10. Louie Zong plays one of his own songs (on guitar): "Sleeping In." At this point we've raised over $10,000! The guitar Jeff and Louie were playing on was bought from TunaTone.

11. Louie accompanies Rebecca to perform "It's Over (Isn't It)" from Steven Universe. Wow! Rebecca mentions that we should all stay tuned for a big announcement that they can't wait to share.

12. Time for a challenging song! "What's the Use of Feeling (Blue)." Rebecca says writing this song for Patti LuPone was one of the great honors of a lifetime! But it's intimidating to perform.

13. Now we have "Fireworks," which is an extended version performance of the Craig of the Creek theme. (Ben Levin is one of its co-creators and he's one of the musicians performing in this concert!) There will be some news soon about Jessica's Big Little World, the Craig of the Creek spinoff. Jeff Rosenstock (a composer for Craig) has a new album called Hellmode.

14. "I Think I Need a Little (Change)" is next; Rebecca says they wrote it before they really knew how to play guitar, using only four strings that are comparable to ukulele! Only $6,000 to go to hit the $20,000 goal. The Trevor Project has so many awesome services for LGBTQ+ people. If we make the goal, Rebecca says they will play something they've never played before.

15. The next song is part of the "change" suite. And it's called "Change" from the Steven Universe movie! (There are a lot of songs about change in SU!)

16. Rebecca now includes the third song in the "change" suite called "Change Your Mind," and it's the longer looping version. Jeff Ball joins on violin. Rebecca considers this a very personal song and suggests you can loop it for as long as you need it.

17. After Rebecca gets excited about hitting $15,000 and noting that Steven Sugar and Kat Morris and Takafumi Hori are in the chat, Michaela Dietz joins the group to sing "On the Run" from Steven Universe!

18. Rebecca performs "Ruby Rider" from Steven Universe, with Jeff Liu on the guitar! We also get some adorable whistling. Rebecca shouts out Meanwhile and Black Box by Aivi and Surasshu--Black Box is why Rebecca wanted them to be part of SU.

19. As we hit $17,000, Jeff Liu plays his song "Boring and Useless." Rebecca joins in with some harmonies. The song has lyrics in English and Japanese. They ask us to stick around for another special guest soon!

20. Next they rock "Giant Woman" with the whole band!

21. At over $18,000, Rebecca shouts out Adam Muto (Rebecca's previous storyboard partner on Adventure Time, who's also done the recent Fionna and Cake special). Adam asked Rebecca to write a song for Marceline, so we get the beloved Adventure Time song "Everything Stays."

22. Estelle joins the group as a special guest!!! We get a special rendition of "Here Comes a Thought."

AT THIS POINT, GOAL IS ACHIEVED!!!!

23. The Adventure Time song "Time Adventure" is next, which Rebecca Sugar dedicates to Adam Muto.

24. "It's Only Magic," written for Ian Jones-Quartey's show OK KO is last in the concert proper.

Rebecca's BIG ANNOUNCEMENT is that they will be releasing A PERSONAL ALBUM called Spiral Bound in November! It is inspired by several years of personal journaling. Jeff Ball and Jeff Liu will be on it. There will also be a Gallery Nucleus show to celebrate the release.

The bonus song, for reaching the goal, is called "Anything Can Happen," from the new album!!

Rebecca invites us to understand that in contrast to a lot of the personal songs that ended up in Steven Universe, these songs are about the next chapter of their journey--to celebrate moving forward into unknown territory.

They decide to do a BONUS bonus: "My Own Way to the End." (This has been played previously on another charity concert.) It has the whole band: Jeff Liu on banjo, Jeff Ball on violin, Louie Zong on the Rhodes, Ben Levin on the bass. :)
