Katara will need a roommate after her friend Kailani moves out, and they suggest the Fire Nation President's disowned son Zuko; she hates him and the idea. But, who can say no to rent money? Though everything changes when the global pandemic attacks. So now everyone is stuck inside.

The Best Case AU is also a solid deconstruction in its own right

And the premise it deconstructs is that the best case scenario for Ursa and Zuko and Azula would be good for the world on the whole. Because no, actually, it would not be. Even if Azulon conveniently dies and Ozai bungles his coup and dies as well from a 'stroke' by poison from you know who, they're still products of a eugenics experiment. Even if Iroh in this AU learns the full scale of this, fundamentally rejects it, he still faces the reality that his nephew believes himself entitled to his son's throne.

He places his niece in a place to live in peace and to make her own choices, but she's still a product of that program and she will still have a driving desire to excel that goes down healthier paths....but leaves her one of the most powerful Firebenders in the world at her age all the same, with abilities predisposed to excellence in combat.

In a scenario absent Ozai's unfettered power, Iroh and Lu Ten are still the agents of willful imperialism at the expense of their neighbors, and with the theocratic elements of the earlier Fire Nation in lieu of the canonical secular autocracy they're a more theocratic system run by the Fire Lord exploiting aspects of the older system to grant a deceptively broader basis of power and control and responsibility.

There are no good scenarios for an imperialistic world war, there are no universes where the people who do this are good people. Lesser cruelty to their own family does not alter this harsh truth. And the only true paths for the Fire Nation Royal Family and the Fire Nation to genuine redemption is to grasp that imperialism IS evil, that they collectively ARE doing evil deeds, and that they must change their path and go down a different direction altogether.

This AU applies a merciless deconstruction to the kinder and nicer imperialism of Lu Ten and Iroh in all the other AUs by virtue of Lu Ten in this AU coming into full confrontation with a canon-style 'The Throne was mine from birth and mama said so' storyline.

I need to see an au where like Azula is hanging out with the gaang, Ty Lee and Mai. Like everyone getting along even being cool with Azula and I can’t take everyone against her yea that was in the comics and plus I know they were just keeping an eye for her and not trusting her but we need a team building or gathering all of them getting along and the comics ruined that. Like I need to see it animated or something. Do you agree ?

We do not speak of the comis unless is to point out how they got pretty much every character wrong.

And yeah, I really wanna see Azula actually getting along with the Gaang, and she'd fit in oddly well.

First of all, she's a traumatized child soldier, so the main criteria to join the group applies to her. She's a really powerful bender, super smart, cool as hell, and REALLY funny, so she adds to the group, and even their past conflicts and the time it would take for it truly to be behind them would make their interactions very interesting (especially between her and Zuko, and, if we add them to the mix and we SHOULD, between her, Mai and Ty Lee).

She has something in common with pretty much all of them. She is a badass fighter and leader; so is Suki. She is a prodigy; so are Toph and Katara. She's snarky, sarcastic and really funny; so are Toph and Sokka. She is a literally child that had to grow up too fast due to how the war affected her family/due to the unfair and unhealthy expectations put on her; so was Katara/Aang. She is really smart and uses humor as a defense mechanism; so is Sokka. And I won't even get started on all the parallels, simmilarities and "complementary differences" between her and Zuko or else I'll never be able to finish this goddamned post.

On top of that, being around the Gaang would help her A LOT, because these kids just have this almost magical way of bringing out the best in everyone (which is one of the reasons why Zuko's redemption arc worked so well - they brought out the sweet, awkward-as-fuck-but-trying-my-best side of him)

Also, I was talking to my boyfriend @signlessacolyte about how one of the few things the comics got right was the fact that Mai would likely get along with Aang, if not downright be friends with him, since her best friend is literally Ty Lee, and he just came up something great: Azula being a bit unsure of how to act around Aang at first because not only is he the Avatar but she also killed him before... and then she realizes he's basically male!Ty Lee and she's just goes "I can work with that"

1. the spark that lights the fire

this is my BABY you guys. i mean... this fic just brings me so much joy to write, and i’m incredibly attached to it. i am so proud of my wordbuilding- it might honestly be my favorite part of it. like it was so much fun getting to do research about deities and figure out how i could apply various names from canon and from the mythology/religion of different cultures to the planets and what not. also the way i incorporated momo and appa (MO-2 and APPA) makes me SO HAPPY. like it’s a tiny thing, but i am very proud that i came up with that, tbh. i know only one chapter is up so far, but i am so excited to keep posting and seeing peoples reactions to it (i might post the next chapter friday? it’s christmas though so idk. maybe the 26th? idk it’ll be out this week.)

2. flowers do not bloom without a little rain

okay this was my first ATLA fic, so it has a special place in my heart. i love the concept of this so much, and i was so surprised that it’s actually pretty popular? ummmm... yeah. i did edit the ending because i didn’t like it, but... now i love it. i always will. i love a good soulmate fic so... yeah. i got the idea for this from a pinterest post, actually, and adapted it a little bit to make it my own. but yeah, this was fun to write, even though i was nervous to post it at first.

3. just want to say how i love you with your hair down

oh jinzula... my precious rarepair.... um yeah i love this fic. i saw a tumblr post that gave me brainrot, and rather than doing a zukka fic, i decided to do a jinzula fic. i love the entire concept behind it, where azula knows she loves jin and wants to say it, but can’t because of everything that’s happened in her life. it’s a redemption fic, but it’s less about her redemption than it is her relationships after it. i really love the idea of her actually loving really easily and people continually letting her down, so i played around with that and ended up really loving it. i also wrote it in one sitting so.... brainrot. i am very proud of it, though, especially because i got to explore a character who often isn’t explored a lot, in my opinion.

4. who knew it would end like this

so tbh i hate the title of this fic. i think if i renamed it, it would be called happy accidents or something like that, because that’s really what it’s a fic about- an accident that brought two people happiness. but besides that, i love this fic. i worked on it for several months, and i’m really happy with how it turned out. i loved blending together a modern au with ba sing se and bending. and i got to write a really fun interaction between the gaang and sokka- the intervention.... that was fun to write. this is another fic that i didn’t expect to kinda... get as big as it did? i was surprised. but yeah, theatre kid zuko and engineer sokka... i am weak for them.

5. when the stars light up the room (i sit and talk to the moon)

i hadn’t really written a 5+1 fic before, so that was really fun. i love the idea of sokka talking to the moon as a way to talk to yue, and i think it would be really sweet to have zuko begin doing it, too, even though he never really met her. i also liked getting to move through different stages of their relationship without actually having to dive into their psyche (because i’m lazy, lmao). i think this is just a really sweet fic, you know? it’s not complicated or anything, but i still love it and am proud of it.

Hey you don’t have to answer this if you don’t want but do you not have issues with zut*ra? The parallels gifset you made was from a zut*ra saying that it was Aang’s fault Azula hit him. I really like your blog but zut*ra fans shit on Aang at every opportunity. Why put up with that?

Do I have issues with the ship. The way I see it, there are two ways to view romantic Zu/tara. One is simply given their canon personalities and dynamic -- acknowledging both characters' values, their motivations, their still-significant relationships with other people -- and then imagining Zuko and Katara trying something together in the future/an AU. The second is to view romantic Zu/tara in the ways it's commonly depicted in popular fanon; things associated with yin/yang notions, etc.

I don't really take issue with people shipping Zu/tara in the former case, because that’s often not affiliated with the unpleasant tendencies of aggressive Zu/tarians (and, keeping canon in mind, hopefully defuses the appeal to some common trends like Fire Lady Katara). I'm sure there are people who like to play around with the ship just for fun, like any other non-canon ship, not because they actually think Katara and Zuko are soulmates in-universe (or maybe they do but they're chill about it) but because their characters offer a premise that seems like an interesting idea to explore. And some people ship things casually, without thinking about it too hard or meticulously weighing characterizations. I don’t personally have a problem with that. Write fics, make art, play around and have fun while respecting the characters -- that's what fandom's supposed to be. Do I think Zuko and Katara are romantically compatible? No, and context is one contributor, but if people find a way to make it work for themselves, or they want to rewrite some elements of canon while staying aware that they are, in fact, rewriting canon, or if they want to focus more on what than who and would admit to doing so, then I understand. Some people are just more drawn to different dynamics, and they can still be respectful and maybe even appreciative of how the story actually played out regardless.

It becomes another scenario for me when people claim that Zu/tara was "robbed" in canon or that it had more development than the canon ships -- essentially, when people are adamant about applying their fanons to what we know in canon. Honestly, the depiction of Zu/tara that most people call for in the actual work does not sound like it involves Katara and Zuko at all. I often find people remolding Zuko and Katara to fit an aesthetic/dynamic/trope that, again, matches more with what they are than who they are, if anything, and then proceed to call that interpretation canon or "missed potential." When people forget canon, when people neglect Katara's trauma, when people dismiss her justifiable anger as "sexual tension," when people ignore how little Katara actually saw of Zuko's journey in comparison to the viewer, when people make claims that attraction had anything at all to do with Zuko's motivation to forge his path in becoming a better person, plus a whole lot of other things I've heard, that's bothersome. (In fact I'm probably going to write about Katara's anger, particularly in the back half of book 3, in the future, and why it's neither "OOC" like some claim nor indicative of attraction, though sometimes it's funny to me how fandom's driven me to think this is an actual debate worth having.)

I'm a fan of Katara and Zuko's canon relationship. They make a kickass duo and they demonstrate a great story about redemption/forgiveness, but it doesn't amount to a love story. In fact I would argue that making it about love (ignoring the fact that they never had feelings for each other) detracts from the story's effectiveness, because it would suggest ulterior motives for Zuko and that Katara had superficial reason to forgive him more easily. You may have noticed I tag platonic Zu/tara as "aang's yangs," because that's ultimately how I view them as a pair. In my eyes, they're the deuteroganists of AtLA, and since Aang’s the protagonist they branch outwards from him and reflect different parts of his journey while still standing on their own. Of course, their own story together is important as well, but I honestly feel like most of every argument for canon romantic Zu/tara is actually better suited for either Ka/taang or Zu/kaang (I could give an example but I'll refrain for the purposes of this ask).

Oh my, and double standards. Double standards everywhere. Such cold takes. Just today I was laughing over a brief "Aang is an abuser" /evidence/ post so ridiculous that it's impossible to take seriously. I suppose that's indicative of how I view Aang and Mai slander these days -- I know I'm on the correct side of the argument, if these complaints even warrant one, and so I've come to not let them weigh me down much too often, but I'm very probably going to hold a bad impression of you if you believe those sorts of things. And I don't think I'm being unnecessarily rude in saying so -- some people really just go to outlandish lengths to promote a ship whose merits are based on speculation and whose potential issues are traceable within the canon work. And if someone disagrees and says it could work, and that they want to play around with it, they can go ahead and explore the dynamic for fun, for sure. I just don't enjoy people who are aggressive/insensitive about it.

Rest assured -- and you've probably seen from the sort of content I reblog -- Aang is my fxcking cinnamon apple. I’m probably not going to bother engaging with people not worth spending the energy on, but of course I’m going to show support and love for my boy in spaces where that’ll actually mean something, and perhaps that can spill over into other areas by sheer number. It’s way more likely I’m going to judge someone for dissing Aang than for shipping Zu/tara, so if I reblogged a gifset from someone who shits on Aang, I probably wasn't aware of who the OP was outside someone who made a gifset for something I wanted to reblog. I’ll be honest, though, Anon, I’m really not sure which gifset you’re referring to, because I know I reblogged one recently, but I looked through the OP’s blog and didn’t find anything myself besides the fact that they ship Zu/tara. They even made a gifset for Aang. Suppose it’s just something I’ll have to watch out for.

My Firebender Sokka AU

The 19 year old was glad to not have a roommate as she attempted to get her body back under control, eyes watering as the pain in her chest seemed to sharpen with each hacking cough before she was suddenly choking on something soft.

Hunching over, she covered her mouth as her lungs continued to remove whatever was cutting off her air before, with a retch, she felt something fall between her teeth and land in her shaking palm.

It was soft and velvety, damp with spit and bile.

Sokka is born a firebender. When he's 10 years old, the Southern Raiders take him and his mother to the Fire Nation, viewing his bending as a blessing from Agni. From then on, he grows up with Zuko and Azula as a Fire Nation noble. Though his best friend is blinded (figuratively and literally) by his faith in his father and nation, Sokka sees the truth: the royal court is a game of strategy, and he'll play it for as long as it takes. Once Zuko is banished from the Fire Nation and fails to capture the Avatar, Sokka and Azula set off on their mission to destroy Ozai by playing right into his hands.
