The other thing about the Kirk-Uhura brotp that I have many feelings about:

Of all the ~430 positions filled by people on the Enterprise, I'd argue that there are none for which outwards composure is more important than for the communications officer and the commanding officer. Above all others on the ship, those two have to stay cool under pressure and retain the ability to keep talking (often to large numbers of people), while projecting unfaltering assurance and resolve.

As individuals, Kirk and Uhura have obviously put a lot of effort into developing that bedrock of composure, while also being pleasant or assertive as needed. Throughout TOS, they both come across as confident, charismatic, very skilled, eloquent professionals. Both of them can be lightly charming and easy to underestimate, or sharp-tongued and forceful, and both of them are clever and good liars.

But tbh, I think that TOS also gradually reveals both Kirk and Uhura to be incredibly high-strung people who are just really good at their jobs.

It's not that either is naturally easy-going and chill! As people, Kirk and Uhura have zero chill. They're just very controlled and very deliberate about projecting what's needed.

Neither are perfect at this by any means. Kirk lashes out now and then, and visibly fights off tension headaches or anxiously fiddles with his own hands. Uhura gets intensely nervous or upset every once in awhile. There are points in the show where one of them will just start losing their shit. But that's unusual, and mainly used to flag the circumstances as exceptional. And even in those cases, we repeatedly see them swapping the role of being a calm and reliable rock for the other one as he/she is about to snap. When Kirk's composure starts to crumble, we'll often see Uhura as this steadying, quietly supportive, or challenging presence as needed; when Uhura starts falling apart, we repeatedly see Kirk flip into a calm, affirming figure taking pains to remind her of her importance and capabilities.

I think this is a bit different from the way that, say, Spock works to keep an iron grip on his vulnerabilities and adheres to cool reason while doing Science, or McCoy might get snappish or plainly desperate but always has a clear enough head for Medicine. Kirk's and Uhura's roles, at least as they choose to approach them, require these constant performances of a sort of lightly emotive, personable steadiness that keeps the whole ship smoothly running even as they're doing the intellectual/practical work of their jobs.

Also, in addition to the explicit dialogue around their professional synergy and rapport, quite a bit is carried by physical acting from Nichols and Shatner as well. For instance, we'll see Uhura's expression shift without a word to dawning realization around some Scheme or Shenanigans that Kirk is carrying out while people around her are still visibly ?????????? Or you'll see these moments of solidarity or trust in how Kirk physically carries himself towards Uhura. It's also made really clear that there is zero sexual attraction or romantic interest between them—they're both charming, attractive, intelligent, and even close in age but it's just not there at all, even repressed or stifled.

In any case, Uhura is the only person other than Spock whom Kirk feels the need to name both times that he records potentially-posthumous special commendations in TOS.

Instead of making them twin peak lords or something, we pretend the evidence that the beast peak does likely not exist is lies, and Shen Yuan gets to become peak lord of the beast peak. Why? Tbh I do think that Zolu could realistically be a couple and make out and have sex without being disingenuous to Luffy's stated sexuality or having any attraction between them whatsoever. Iirc, sex and all that is something that Luffy just "doesn't think about" - and he's obv had plenty of time to grow attracted to someone in a romantic or sexual way, and just hasn't. (Zoro doesn't seem to show interest in other people like that either, which is likely unintentional irt sexuality but a truth nonetheless.) So like, no attraction- possibly at all, possibly without the catalyst of experiencing it first. K. Cool. Good.

Then there's also the distinct relationship that Zoro and Luffy have, bound together by fate in a different way than the rest. Luffy loves all his crew equally, but love has different forms in different relationships (not in a way that's necessarily labelable as romantic, familial, or any of that)

And then their brains work the same, they speak the same language, they have the same crazy sense of devotion, etc etc etc. And look how crazy devoted they are already, how intense. Ultimately, they've probably discovered every single way to express affection toward each other that they can.

But when there's something major, something life-changing, it can feel like all the established ways of telling someone you care aren't adequate in that moment. Something like a final fight in a 1000+ chapter story would probably feel that way; that ultimate success and victory. But what expression of love haven't those two traded back and forth a million times by now?

Kisses are known to signify love, of multiple kinds. I honestly don't think that either of them have particularly thought about it much, but they know it's an action that exists. And I don't think Luffy would mind at all in that context: a kiss as communication. And obviously, it's easy for the serotonin and dopamine rush from being told something that intense to cause you to indulge, to say it right back. I don't think it's about physical pleasure or having a relationship that involves kissing or more for either of them. I just also know that there's gotta be a moment in the story where Luffy fully fucking processes that Zoro's not gonna leave his side, ever, and this late in the story that's a way for it to play out and feel realistic.

Luffy's relationships, outside of his brothers and bio family, aren't something that should be fit into a societal label, because what's important to him is the actual actions themselves, and words are, frankly, limiting. Hence, nakama.

Stan and Fiddleford, Fiddleford and Stan!

The greatest relationship that never was. [Platonic or whatever you prefer, I don’t care]

Stan clearly loves robots in canon, still thinking about his little Footbot even 40 years later.

It always makes me think about what would’ve happened if someone saw Stan’s love for robots and decided to teach him. 

In fact, you know what? Shellfish Stan has the internet. What if he taught himself how to make simple robots. Entertaining youtube vids would do the trick.

And then shortly after arriving in Gravity Falls Stan sees Fiddleford around and immediately runs home to Ford.

“FORD! STANFORD! I found the coolest kid in the entire galaxy! We gotta befriend this guy!”

Stan tells Ford all about the kid building real robots. Big ones that move freely, shoot lasers and can even talk!

Ford is…not impressed. He was never particularly interested in Stan's obsession with robots and knows that Stan sometimes exaggerates. He also knows that as soon as the kid sees what a freak he is, the whole friendship thing will be off the table and Stan will be sad. Better to stay home and hang out with Grunkle Dipper instead! That’s more than enough for Ford. [Or so he tells himself]

Stan won’t take no for an answer.

[Mabel is standing in the background frowning and making a mental note to talk to Stan about not forcing Ford to do things he doesn’t wanna do.]

So Stan drags Ford to Fidds and Ford has to admit. He’s a little impressed after all. Very impressed actually. Woah EXTREMELY impressed. That’s some highly advanced tech!

Stan starts to introduce themselves, eager to get to know the guy and finally have someone to talk about robots with. Someone who understands their awesomeness! Maybe together they can finally convince Ford how cool robots really are!

Stan is cut off by Ford asking Fiddleford questions that Stan doesn’t understand and Fiddleford answers them excitedly. Soon they’re in their own world and there is no space for Stan to enter.

It’s Great Uncle Mason and Ford all over again, only somehow this time it's worse. 

It was supposed to be Stan and Fiddleford bonding over their shared interest. Together they would drag Ford out of the house so he wouldn't spend the entire summer at home hanging out with an old man.

Making an actual friend would make this the best summer ever! They've never made a friend before, but this was their one chance. Stan could feel it!

And just imagine all the pranks they could pull and trouble they could cause if they were a trio instead!

Stan looks at the Fords and hears them speak, but it might as well be different language.

Ford seems to be having fun though. He seems really interested in Fiddleford’s inventions.

Oh. 

It wasn’t that Ford thought robots were boring and stupid and that’s why he was never interested in Stan’s attempts.

It’s that Stan’s robots were boring and stupid.

Looking at Fiddleford’s inventions now, Stan can’t help but agree. 

His own attempts must’ve looked laughable to Ford. It’s a miracle his brother never made fun of him.

Stan knew, of course, that Fiddleford was smarter than him but he thought maybe he could teach Stan or at least help Stan a bit with his own Footbot project.

That's stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.

Fiddleford is much better than Stan. He's a genius like Ford. He wouldn't be interested in anything that Stan had to offer.

Stan flushes in embarrassment and runs back home claiming he forgot something.

Ford comes back hours later grinning from ear to ear and never asks why Stan stayed away. Stan is pretty sure Ford didn’t even notice.

By the time Stan gets another chance to talk to Fiddleford, he already learned some important lessons and knows he should let Ford have his own friends. He’s also too ashamed to show anyone, especially the coolest guy he’s ever met, his own pathetic inventions. 

[If this Stan ever gets his happy ending he and Fiddleford can sometimes be found building an army of increasingly more and more dangerous robots. Ask them what the army is for and they just end up cackling. Everyone is concerned but they can’t bring themselves to stop the boys. Stan seems to be having so much fun.]
