Round 3 - Reptilia - Coraciiformes

Our next order of birds are the Coraciiformes. This order contains the families Meropidae (“bee-eaters”), Brachypteraciidae (“ground rollers”), Coraciidae (“rollers”), Todidae (“todies”), Momotidae (“motmots”), and Alcedinidae (“kingfishers”).

Coraciiformes are one of the most colorful orders of birds. They have large heads on short necks, bright plumage, weak feet, and short legs. They generally have syndactyly, with three forward-pointing toes (and toes 3 & 4 fused at their base). Bee-eaters are characterised by slender bodies, long downturned bills, and usually elongated central tail feathers. Rollers are crow-shaped, with strong, slightly hooked beaks, and stocky bodies. Ground Rollers resemble rollers, but have duller plumage and are more terrestrial, with longer legs and shorter, more rounded wings. Motmots have a relatively heavy bill and most have long tails. Kingfishers have even larger, sharp, pointed bills and short tails. Todies look like tiny kingfishers. Coraciiformes feed on a wide variety of prey, and are linked by their "slamming" behaviour, thrashing their prey onto surfaces to kill or incapacitate them. They mainly live in the Old World, with their New World representation being limited to the todies, motmots, and a few species of kingfisher.

Almost all Coraciiformes are cavity-nesters, nesting in burrows in the ground or on the sides of banks, or in holes in a tree, rocks, or termite mounds. They may nest in single pairs or in colonies. Some are cooperative breeders, and most are monogamous for at least one breeding season. Most species involve the male presenting prey items as gifts for the female during courtship. Both the male and female will dig a burrow, sometimes assisted by helpers. Burrows typically consist of a small chamber at the end of a tunnel. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks.

The Coraciiformes arose in the Middle Eocene.

The social structures of the Red-throated Bee-eater (Merops bulocki) and the White-fronted Bee-eater (Merops bullockoides) have been described as more complex than any other bird species. The birds exist in colonies located on nesting cliffs, and have a stable structure all year round. These colonies typically contain 5 to 50 burrows (occasionally up to 200) and are composed of clans of two or three pairs, their helpers, and their offspring. The helpers are male offspring from a previous year.

One unusual technique often used by Carmine Bee-eaters (Merops nubicus and nubicoides) (image 4) is to ride on the backs of bustards while searching for prey.

European Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) are able to spot a bee 60 m (200 ft) away, and Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters (Merops persicus) have been observed flying out 100 m (330 ft) to catch large wasps.

Bee-eater nests are generally used only for a single season and are rarely used twice by the bee-eaters, but abandoned nests may be used by other birds, snakes, and bats as shelter and breeding sites.

While they mainly eat insects, Indian Rollers (Coracias benghalensis) are highly opportunistic predators, and an Indian Roller was once observed feeding on an Indian Wolf Snake (Lycodon aulicus).

The Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus) (image 1) is unofficially considered the national bird of Kenya.

The Azure Dollarbird (Eurystomus azureus) and Oriental Dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis) will hunt the large swarms of termites and flying ants which appear after thunderstorms. Tens or hundreds of these rollers may be attracted to the swarms.

Tody parents may feed each of their chicks up to 140 times per day, the highest rate known among birds.

The Cuban Tody (Todus multicolor) (image 3) will line the walls of its nesting tunnel and egg chamber with a thick glue-like substance mixed with grass, lichen, algae, small feathers, and other materials, presumably to deter predators.

The Turquoise-browed Motmot (Eumomota superciliosa) has a long, racket-shaped tail, present in both sexes. This tail is used in a wag-display, where it is moved back-and-forth in a pendulous fashion. Both sexes will perform the wag-display in the presence of a predator, and it is thought that the display exists to communicate to predators that the bird has detected them and will escape if a capture attempt is made.

Motmots have been observed feeding on poison dart frogs.

The Guam Kingfisher (Todiramphus cinnamominus) is considered extinct in the wild, due primarily to the introduction of the invasive Brown Tree Snake (Boiga irregularis) to Guam. The bird was last seen in the wild in 1986. The species persists in human care on both Guam and the US mainland. In September 2024, 9 Guam Kingfishers (bred at the Brookfield Zoo, Cincinnati Zoo, National Aviary, Sedgwick County Zoo, and Disney's Animal Kingdom) were released on Cooper Island, in Palmyra Atoll. The introduced population has since begun breeding, with the first eggs sighted in April 2025: the first laid in the wild in over 40 years! The hope is to someday release Guam Kingfishers back to their native range on Guam, if protected areas can be established and the threat of the Brown Tree Snakes is eliminated or better controlled.

The largest kingfisher, and largest Coraciiform, is the Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae). It outsizes even the 42–46 cm (1.4-1.5 ft) long Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima) by body mass. The Laughing Kookaburra is 1–47 cm (16–19 in) in length, and the female is usually larger, weighing 190–465 g (6.7–16.4 oz).

The loud, distinctive call of the Laughing Kookaburra is widely used as a stock sound effect in media that involves Australia, or any tropical jungle, especially in older movies. Laughing Kookaburras do not typically live in jungles, preferring open sclerophyll forest and woodland, with sparse understory and grass-covered ground.

With Lostbelt 7 out on FGO NA and me falling back into my greek mythology obsession I wanted to rant share a potentially unique perspective

Being a fan of Fate series and Greek Mythology at the same time is a wild experience.

Like the series started pretty accurately with Fate/Stay Night. Heracles was the Berserker, the "insane" character, who develops a weirdly wholesome father-daughter relationship with a girl because of the pain they feel at the loss of their families. Meanwhile Medea was still an absolute psychopath but also just wanted to have a good wholesome relationship, one she thought she had with Jason. Medusa is there too but she has so little in common with her mythological counterpart but you are willing to overlook it cause she fits into the story well (and is very hot).

Then they will make a whole alternate universe story(Fate/Apocrypha) with an Achilles thats a total arrogant, charismatic but likeable jerk that loves to fight which is generally pretty in character besides being less of a psycho and he will have a great relationship with Chiron who is his enemy and views Atalanta (who has lion ears and tail which call back to her myth. But she also wears a little dress so it's a mixed bag) as a big sister figure because of the stories Peleus told him which is the best Achilles related HC I have ever heard. Over all you will say "well that wasn’t bad"

Then you will roll your eyes because they made Artemis a big tiddy waifu who came down Earth to make sure her boyfriend Orion, who is a teddy bear for reasons, didn’t perv on another woman in the gacha game(Fate/Grand Order).

But the gacha game isn’t done because they will reveal that greek gods were actually interdimensional spaceships that became more normal gods when their spaceship bodies got destroyed.

Then you will have a very emotional scene where Orion, that's no longer a teddy bear for reasons, shoots down Artemis, who is an orbital space laser. All the while, in the same story, Jason will become one of the best characters while still being the absolute worst.

And at that point you won’t even know what to feel because how are you supposed to react when they say this is Zeus' true form

Oh and did I mention Trojan Horse is a transforming mech piloted by Odysseus who is a pretty anime boy and wears Aegis, which is an ironman armor with a boob window in Fate?

This isn’t PJO where the story pretends to be a very accurate adaptation of greek mythology. Even in the beginning they were okay with completely ignoring the myths but as time went on they went so out there and got so ridiculous that I kind of respect them at this point.

Grouping these all together because a whole bunch of things happened today and there is a lot to talk about. For those who haven't seen, Georgia posted an Insta story of the sunset, which was followed by an extremely similar picture/Insta story from AL about an hour later. Shortly after that, Anna posted another story of Lyra and Birdie baking side by side, which Georgia also reshared:

Right off the bat, one thing in particular stood out about AL's story: Her using the hashtag #bakingwithsheenant, which differs from the tags she and Georgia normally use (#Sheenbergnants or something to that effect). It especially caught my attention because "Sheenant" is one of the ship names used in the fandom for Michael/David (though it is not a term I normally use). AL could have easily been referring to Lyra and Birdie in the photo, of course, but...of all the portmanteaus and hashtags AL could have chosen, she went with that one, and all I can say is that if it was nothing more than a fluke, then it was one hell of a fluke for her to make.

As if all this weren't enough, however, we then have what @phantomstars24 has mentioned, which is another story that Georgia shared just a little while ago:

To what was said in the Asks above, if this is true, it would absolutely mean that Michael and David are also neighbors, and that my head feels like it's slightly melting. Because there is no way in hell Michael bought a house in London next to David by accident. A meteorite has a better chance of hitting the Earth and bringing back the dinosaurs as our reptilian overlords than that does of being an accident.

Also if Michael and David are together as part of some poly arrangement, I can't think of a better way for them to ensure that they can see each other all the time. The number of possibilities are limitless: Random sleepovers, snuggling on the couch for movie date night, unwinding with a glass of red wine after they've had a long day doing their respective plays. Thinking as well of how we saw Michael and David looking at each other at opening night of Macbeth, now the chances of them going home together afterward have shot up by about a million, and I can hardly get my mind around it. I mean...dear God...

As for Georgia's "So linked!" sounding sarcastic, I could definitely see that as sarcasm. The sunset pictures from earlier seemed very planned, and even more so once we saw the baking picture. I saw some reactions from fans calling AL and Georgia "besties" once the Insta stories were posted, but I'm not exactly sure how those posts make them besties. The way Georgia posts about Anna is entirely different from how she posts about Jennie Fava, whom we know actually is one of Georgia's longtime best friends, so that difference makes it difficult for me to see why people see Georgia/AL in that light.

And if they are frequently getting together because of that proximity/because it is easier for Michael and David to have one house to themselves while AL, Georgia, and the kids are in another, I could see some degree of resentment existing on Georgia's end, especially if she feels like more of a babysitter than anything else. It's difficult to say for certain, of course, but we also have so many instances now of Anna copying Georgia on social media that I would imagine it has started to feel like a bit of a "me and my shadow" routine.

In any case, we have a lot of little pieces here that only give us a small glimpse at the whole, but boy, are they some very interesting pieces indeed. I think what strikes me most about all of this is that these stories also allude to Michael and David spending time together, yet we never actually see any pictures of them. (I have an Ask related to this waiting in my inbox, so I will expand more on that in a bit.) But we are being given room to think that, and to draw certain conclusions as a result, and I think both Georgia and AL know that and seemingly do not have a problem with it.

So yes, those are my thoughts on all the developments from today. Glad as always to hear from my followers and what your thoughts are on all this...
