Love this town. After taking the ’doofs for a well-deserved field trip to the museum, we had a picnic in the coal mine and practiced battling some rock types. Billie and Bo ate some more dirt. I taught Billie Rock Smash while we levelled up to match the first gym leader, Roark.
We entered the gym brimming with confidence. I used Billie to make qui… erm… slow paced work of his Geodude and Onix, but knew we needed another strategy for Cranidos, and luckily Benson had came up with one.
We growled away his attack stat, losing Billie and Betty in the process. Then Bo went in with his ’returns’ before fainting too. Beryl eventually took the win with headbutts. Her husband Barney was napping throughout.
And like that, we obtained our first badge and TM Stealth Rock!
We headed back to Jubilife and beat up some Team Galactic grunts with urm ’help’ from Professor Rowen’s assistant. His penguin just fainted though, so really the day was saved thanks to Team Oof.
Heading north, we were excited to visit Flower town! After all, Barney needs to make it up to Beryl for napping through her gym battle.
I've always been kind of afraid of Pokémon, so I've never been one to explore too far from my home in Twinleaf town. However, my childhood friend Barry dragged me along with him to the nearby Lake Verity to look for rare Pokémon after he saw a television show about a research team trying to find a red Gyarados.
We passed by an older man and a guy about our age as they were leaving the lakefront, and they seemed to leave left a briefcase behind on the shore. Barry and I went to investigate, clicking the briefcase open. Just as we saw the three Pokéballs inside, we were attacked by wild Starly.
Barry said we ought to use the Pokémon in the briefcase to defend ourselves, and I sent out a Turtwig as he released a Piplup. We asked them to protect us, but before they could do anything to the Starly the third Pokéball unleashed a truly frightening Chimchar. It smacked the heads of the Turtwig and Piplup together before knocking out them and the two Starly all on its own. Never have I seen such violence. Barry thought it was cool, but I was terrified.
Following its rampage, the Chimchar placed its Pokéball in my hand and returned. Then, the two men from earlier approached. The older man, professor Rowan, said they'd seen the battle from further back and it seems that this Chimchar he was keeping seemed to like me and I should take him as a partner to explore the Sinnoh region. I told him that sounded insane and that I was giving his Pokémon back to him, but he just told me Minston was in better hands now. I asked him if he meant 'Winston' and he just stared wistfully into the middle-ground before telling Barry and I to meet him in Sandgem town to get a Pokédex and then ran off. Barry followed after, hasty as always, leaving me alone by the lake.
I tried to leave Chimchar behind, but he wouldn't let that happen, and kept coming out of his Pokéball and making loud noises and trying to get me to get a move on. He would've gotten along well with Barry... Why did he have to choose me? Anyway, I guess Minston is my Pokémon now?
I drew an entire fucking page dedicated to a character that has about 5 minutes of in-game relevance in Pokemon D/P/Pt/BD/SP and the only regret I have is that I haven't been posting as much content about him as I should.
Also, digital sucky right now. My pen went wonky wunk and isn't??? Properly??? Coordinated??? Idk what it's called but so far unless I want to experience a frustration akin to trying to fit a hand in between the mattress and wall to try and grab your phone only to realize you'd need to move the entire bed to be able to reach it yall are gonna have to settle for tradition until I find a better alternative :(
“One of the miners was kind enough to fill me in on the Onix situation! There’s two reasons Onix aren’t as much of a threat here!
The first is that Onix actually have magnets in their heads, kind of like the ones on the Magnemite line. The minors have some sort of sensor system set up where something will react with an Onix’s magnet and let all the miners know if an Onix is tunneling too close to the site or near something important in a cavern. They said they “deal with it from there”, so I’m not entirely sure what that entails, but there’s no danger from surprise Onix tunneling.
The second reason is that they actually have a good relationship with the Onix in the cavern! We want the precious raw materials in the mine; Onix eat large rocks for their diet. They’ve reached a good relationship of if the Onix don’t tunnel where we are and occasional help us, they can get all the leftover rocks we’ve extracted the goodies from!
It’s really neat to see how human-Pokémon relationships have progressed like this!”
the rock family goes absolutely ham on halloween and it's even more fun when iron island has paranormal activity. :) roark loves to dress up in costume. oreburgh probably makes use of the mines as a haunted trail a la knott's scary farm i think they have the real estate for that tbh. leans into the "yeah we're kind of a country city over here" but it's cute and fun but it's very much a community-led, community-loved night. they deserve a carnival really. drifloon balloons for the kids except a couple of them are actually drifloon they just wanna hold hands and go ooOoooOOOooo.
