pp

Recorded sound, which artificially preserves the unpreservable, increases the likelihood of listening without hearing, since it can be listened to at home or in motion, thus allowing us to reduce music to background activity and eliminate the possibility of total concentration - i.e., thought. The moral responsibility for this rests entirely with the individual human being, who can determine whether a recording is a means of instruction, rendering the music more familiar through repetition - the equivalent of rereading a passage in a book - or simply a means of distraction in the sense of the music played by the band in Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain, to which the philosopher Settembrini says, “The human being, unfortunately, has a tendency to imbue objects with moral authority, so as not to take the responsibility himself. Is a knife an instrument with which one can commit murder - therefore an immoral instrument - or is it an instrument with which bread can be cut and a fellow human being fed - therefore an instrument of human generosity? It is the human being’s application of it that determines its moral qualities.”
- Daniel Barenboim, pianist, conductor, author and music director

The tenor Miguel Fleta (1897-1938) was considered one of the best tenors in Spain. He was the calaf in the world premiere of Giacomo Puccini’s “Turandot” on April 25th, 1926 at the Scala di Milano and in demand worldwide. Here is an original program from May 31, 1925 in the Teatro Circo de Zaragoza, where he sang the Radames in “Aida”.

How about P?
P for Pianissimo from Love Gods!
Tumblr media
She is part of a duo with her sister, Fortissimo. The two of them are assistants to Cynthia, the God of the peace and happiness that comes from dreams (dreams from sleep, daydreams, etc.) Cynthia spends most of her time in existence dreamwalking, which means Pianissimo and her sister are in charge of keeping watch over her waking form.
The two have the ability to speak through music, which they find to be more useful than their usual speaking voices, which are usually too quiet for anyone to hear them. Every step they take creates a disc for them to stand on, giving them the ability to skip up stairs they create through intention alone. Pianissimo's steps take the form of different phases of the moon.
Pianissimo is much quieter and softer than her counterpart, often letting the other speak for her when the two are addressed. While Fortissimo often makes the first move in an altercation, Pianissimo hangs back, taking her time. You do not want to be in her way when she finally decides on how she wants to confront you.

The Weekly Gravy #133
A little off-topic, but I got a poem published in the online magazine JAKE, which is pretty damn cool. You can read it here. A Thousand and One (2023) – **** In his films Shoplifters and Broker, director Hirokazu Kore-eda depicts surrogate families, showing how the human need for love and connection, and the need to care for one another, brings together people on the fringes of society, even in…
