Judge Paul Sacco's MANILA Music Immersion Mixtape
"(The noise ordinance violators' expressions are collectively) my favorite aspect," Judge Paul Sacco told The Denver Post about his music immersion program in 2008, "These are hard folks - guys with tattoos and metal bits, and they're part of a gang or hang out with gangs. These are some rough kids. You see some guy with shades, tattoos and all and then a Gene Autry song comes on (like the theme from Happy Trails), and it's nails on a blackboard for them. They're extremely annoyed.”
Since 1996, Judge Sacco has been serving justice to Ft. Lupton, CO, noise ordinance brigands via the likes of Minnie Ripperton, Autry, Barry Manilow, and Barney the Dinosaur. One wonders if the selection of tracks would’ve sufficed to make them think twice about their crimes.
Or - per the FIlipino saying - seven times.
Enter the Manila Music Immersion Mixtape.
Not only does this Spotify playlist have an eclectic amount of old pop songs, but it also includes some Original Philippine Music hits. If Judge Sacco likens the theme from Happy Trails to nails on a chalkboard, Jose Mari Chan's "Refrain" might as well be sonically tantamount to the Spanish donkey.
And boom car drivers who'd live by the L'Trimm 1988 anthem would change their tune via APO Hiking Society's "Love is for Singing." The tough rockers would’ve cringed at Glenn Medeiros’s “Long and Lasting Love,” Menudo’s “If You’re Not Here (By My Side),” and Billy Ocean’s “Suddenly.”
For this Cagayan Valley tita here, I felt that Judge Sacco could’ve went above and beyond Manilow while I read the Denver Post article on the music immersion program back in the states when it was posted online a few times. His cover of one of my favorite David Pomeranz songs, “The Old Songs,” is listed in this alternate playlist.
And speaking of old Dave here, I also aptly included his 1999 recordings of “King and Queen of Hearts” and “Got to Believe in Magic" as well as "Born for You."
And for good measure, I included Morris Albert’s “Feelings.” Regarded in numerous forums and nostalgia websites as one of the sappiest ballads of the ‘70s, it’s more than enough to have the garage band rockers rehearse at reasonable volumes. My childhood jam, Starship’s “Sara,” and Joshua Kadison’s “Beautiful In My Eyes” are also listed.
As with the playlist with most of what was played at the music immersion class, this sequel is a treat for oldies fans and music lovers who feel that the pop music in recent years isn’t interesting to them anymore. Listen with a Spotify Premium account to get the most of it!

been trying to make a concerted effort to be more appreciative of my filipino heritage by engaging with the culture, learning about the history and... the pop music :') and i discovered boy group ALAMAT who are k-pop-esque but unique in that they put a distinctly filipino spin by highlighting their own diverse ethnic & cultural background by incorporating myths, traditional textiles, art, dance & history in their body of work.
super super recommend checking out their songs & MVs on youtube, if you're filipino or not!

You know what, fuck it
OPM and P-Pop appreciation post! Here's some songs from the 2020s that I think should get more attention especially from Filipinos. Some of these songs are recent and some are from a few years ago. Some artists are popular and some are niche. Some are their more famous songs while others are deep cuts. Here's just some I really like, feel free to add more!
Puede Ba by Maymay Entrata feat. Viktoria - Jazzy and sexy party song that you could dance to, also the music video is just everything to me
flashing lights warning and quick camera movements
youtube
Babala by Yeng Constantino - Another jazzy song but more just a vibe about a woman dealing with a toxic person and the rumors they spread about her
added context: "Marites" is a name often given to local town gossipers or chismosas
cw for some violence but they're looney tunes level stuff
youtube
'SSP (Saksak Sa Puso) by VXON - P-Pop song about a betrayal that leads to committing a murder/being murdered
cw for blood, graphic violence, and on-screen death, and warning for flashing lights, and fast camera movements/changes
youtube
Guillotine Drops by Bita and the Botflies - Creepy chill vibes on a rock song about a woman accused of witchcraft trying to prove her innocence
cw for implied death/execution and beheading obv
youtube
Waiting For The End To Start by the Itchy Worms - Apocalyptic edgy song full of vibes made sometime during the pandemic. It definitely sounds like it.
cw for skulls and a lot of death imagery
youtube
Wake Me Up by One Click Straight - English alternative/indie rock song with that lost kid that just wants to find himself kinda beat, and again, the vibes are good
flashing lights warning and fast camera movements/changes
youtube
Santigwar by dwta - cutesy love song about doing witchcraft and it's in Bikolano too :D
youtube

the way I just know musical tumblr and the rest of the internet would be obsessed with Mula sa Buwan (musical retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac set in 1940s WWII Philippines) but it’s locked behind a language barrier

"pare ko" by eraserheads strikes me as such an aro song I CAN EXPLAIN I SWEAR I SWEAR I SWEAR!!
yeeees, the song IS about someone going through the typical young romance experience and asking for advice and just yk, the usual
but i'd like to think that the 'pare' in that song is aromantic
i mean with lines like "huwag mong sabihing 'na naman?'" (translation: don't tell me 'this again?') it sounds like this pare is someone who's tired of the romance talk but is still the go-to romance advice person
and you have "alam kong nababaduyan ka na sa mga sinasabi ko, pero sana naman ay maintindihan mo" (translation: i know what i'm saying is in poor taste to you, but i hope you understand) LIKE- HELLO???? this is so aromantic to me. like the pare is probably known to not like romance but i mean-
okay so maybe i am projecting on this song too much but what else am i supposed to do

Entry 5 ITam Night 2024 part 2?
Okay so things just got real and new things came up so first lets talk about dwta's statement;
Tumblr media
damn guys from what I've heard they made her wait 9+ fucking hours (Don't take my word for it) before they told her that she wouldn't be performing i mean i get it that there had been delays but at least own up to it guys. like what the fuck AHAHHAHAHA and please don't even try to do the same mistake of not compensating the artists cause you guys are already in too fucking deep.
Yes Ben&Ben is more famous and is a crowd favorite, but don't pick favorites because every artist is the same and they are all struggling with rehearsals gigs and they deserve the respect for all the efforts they have been through especially dwta for making the effort of going to manila from fucking Bicol. and this is all the artists fucking get a lame ass apology statement.
Tumblr media
Jesus guys didn't you get trained to handle these types of situations, what the fuck, the statement feels and reads like its not even sincere. best thing they would have done is just fucking admit to what happened and provide the people proper explanation of what happened. FEU Tech, Student Coordinating Council, Student Activities and Development Office (SADO) guys take a hint whatever you guys have been doing sucks shit and it doesn't work, change it own up to your own mistakes and be the change for everyone to follow. ang problema kasi hinahayaan niyo mga estudyante niyo ginagawa niyong underlings, you guys are fucking training students to be fucking lapdogs and even fucking listening to a word they say.
#compensatetheartists
anyways that's all for me share your thoughts and comments ill gladly read them
Edit all statements are taken for each parties respective facebook pages

It’s the very reason the group was launched in February 2021: while original P-pop music saw success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, support faced a steep decline once groups started modeling themselves after their Korean counterparts. The industry lacked diversity and by extension, a distinct identity: something Alamat has in spades. Today, they are ready to live up to their name (which means “legends” in English) as the first multiethnic, multilingual act in the Philippines.
Alamat came together from all over the country. Leader, main dancer, and sub-vocalist Taneo (22 years old) is from Tabuk, Kalinga, in the far North; co-leader Mo (20) is a half-Black American from Castillejos, Zambales; Jao (20) comes from Pampanga and the group’s center Tomás (24) from Tabaco City, Albay. Vocalist and visual R-Ji (23) is a Waray-Waray from Borongan, Eastern Samar, while rapper-producer Alas (21) is a Bisaya from Davao City.
All were students with side jobs prior to joining the group, and while they all agree that this gig positively changed the trajectory of their lives, the journey was not without doubts. “Lately, it seems like Filipinos gravitate towards foreign influences more: our appreciation for our culture has slowly started to fade. So when we heard of the concept of this boy group, we couldn’t help but think it was risky,” Jao admits.
Alamat’s creative director Jason Paul Laxamana further outlines to Teen Vogue via email the complexities in P-pop and K-pop, and how they’ve affected Alamat’s reception in the country. “For Pinoy K-pop fans, they would judge Alamat based on their standards: glossy sets, Korean-style choreography, and even physical appearance like light skin and colored eyes,” Laxamana says. “Since Alamat doesn’t follow their formula 100%, many perceive them to be doing it wrong.”
But these risks seem to have paid off, as they’ve built an impressive portfolio of songs that illuminate the Philippines’ illustrious culture. “Kbye,” for instance, is their debut anthem about ghosting sung in seven of our local languages. “Kasmala” — which recently went viral for its “f*ck colonizers” concept — references the 1904 St. Louis World Fair, where Filipino natives were displayed like zoo animals before a foreign audience. Their latest EP Pasulong has the sensual and bass-heavy “Aswang” as the lead single, where all six members fall for the country’s most popular urban legend: a bloodsucker that only appears at night.
