Canonical Batfamily Birthdays
Here are all the birthdates I know of that are canon somewhere in DC, with a preference for the main comics continuities. I have included exact sources and image references when possible. I am not including character introduction dates, just actual birthdays.
If you find any other sources for Batfamily birthdays, please do share!
A moment of silence for Batfamily characters who don’t have canonical birthdays yet, so far as I know. This includes Damian Wayne, Stephanie Brown, Duke Thomas, and more. :(
Summary
Source images will be further down, but here’s an overview in roughly age order (I’m not sure of Kate vs Selina’s ages) with the dates the birthdays were introduced and used:
Tim Drake: July 19th (from 2003)
Jason Todd: August 16th (from 2004)
Cassandra Cain: January 26th (from 2002)
Helena Bertinelli: February 14th (in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold universe, from 2010)
Helena Wayne: September 7th (from 1984), potentially October 20th or the 22nd of unknown month or maybe October 22 or maybe Feb 28th (all the New 52 on passports from 2011-2012). These could also be New 52 Helena Bertinelli’s birthdays or nobody’s birthdays. who even knows.
Dick Grayson: March 20th (from 1995), October ~24th ish (from 1990), November 11th (from 1976), December 1st (on Earth-16 in animated Young Justice universe, from 2012)
Barbara Gordon: September 23rd (from 1976), sometime in fall (from 1987)
Selina Kyle: March 14th (from 1976)
Kate Kane: January 26th (in Batwoman TV series from 2020), March 21st? (word-of-god by J.H. Williams III from 2012)
Bruce Wayne: October 7th (from 2021), February 19th (from 1970s various to more recently), April ~7th (from the late 1940s)
Jim Gordon: January 5th (from 1976)
Alfred Pennyworth: April 8th (from 1976), August 16th (in the Injustice: Gods Among Us universe, from 2016)
Note: in this post when I say “main comics continuity(s)/universe” I’m referring to anything that’s been a “home” continuity for the comics at some point. For example, pre-Crisis Earth-2, Earth-1/New Earth, and Earth-0/Prime Earth, as opposed to Elseworlds or DCEU earths that are still part of the broader DC multiverse but have never been the primary continuity of the comics.
Below are further details and source panels.
Details and Sources
Tim Drake
Tim has only been given one canon birthday. He turned 16 on July 19th in Robin Vol. 2 #116 (cover date Sep 2003).

Robin Vol. 2 #116 (Sep 2003)
Jason Todd
Jason turned 18 on August 16th in Detective Comics #790 (March 2004). This is his only canon birthday.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Detective Comics #790 (Mar 2004)
In post-Crisis/preboot (1986-2011) continuity, there was a gap of six months between when Jason died and when he was resurrected (Batman Annual 25). Jason died April 27th according to his death certificates in Batman Annual 25 and Batman Files 2011, so he would’ve resurrected near late October.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman Annual 25 (May 2006)
So, it could be that post-resurrection Jason is biologically 6 months younger than he chronologically should be. But honestly, do we even really know what multiverse-breaking resurrection punches and then a Lazarus Pit on top of that do to someone’s body??? Either way it’s just much more simple to just use his chronological age.
Cassandra Cain
Much like Tim and Jason, Cass has only ever been given one birthdate: January 26th from Batgirl Vol. 1 #33. With that birthday, she turned 18 in Batgirl Vol. 1 #37.
Tumblr media
Batgirl Vol. 1 #33 (Dec 2002)
When Jan 26th actually comes, Bruce suggests David Cain could’ve lied about it, but Cass denies that idea and continues to treat the day as her birthday.
Tumblr media
Batgirl Vol. 1 #37 (Apr 2003)
Why it's likely her real birthday: Bruce initially believes Cain must’ve lied because he doesn’t think Cain could’ve known her birthday. However, we later learn Cain had lied about her origins and was actually her biological father. Batgirl v1 #62 and #73 show he was there for her birth and could absolutely know the date.
On top of that, in Batgirl #37 Cass remembers celebrating her birthday with him as a child, so he did seem to actually keep track of it. I honestly don’t see any reason to believe he’d lie (Bruce is just a jealous spoilsport).
Helena Bertinelli + Wayne
I’m combining them here because the New 52 gives me a headache.
Helena Bertinelli celebrated her birthday on February 14th in a spin-off comic from the animated Batman: The Brave and the Bold series. This is obviously not part of regular comics continuity and the characters differ from the usual comics in many ways. And yet, for reasons that will soon be clear, it’s my favorite for actually being about Helena Bertinelli the Huntress and for not being an utter mess.
Tumblr media
Batman: The Brave and the Bold #14 (Apr 2010)
In a character profile at the end of Infinity Inc. #7 (Oct 1984), Helena Wayne’s birthday was September 7th, 1959. Calculating back from October 1984, that would make her 25 at the time.
During the New 52, Helena Bertinelli was initially portrayed as a long-dead (secretly alive but don’t worry about it) mobster’s daughter and replaced by Earth-2’s Helena Wayne who got stranded on Prime Earth. This H. Wayne stole H. Bertinelli’s identity in the form of several forged passports and IDs, which had hints toward birthdates. The question is, can we take any of those birthdates seriously, and if so, which birthdates and for which character? (Cue my headache.)
Skip ahead to Dick if overthinking fake passports sounds boring.
When comparing to a real Italian passport, the date on H. Wayne’s fake Italian passport appears to be a birthdate. Note that the fake name is Carol Bertinelli, not Helena. H. Wayne said her IDs were inspired by H. Bertinelli but clearly she’s taking liberties for the IDs so that’s a point toward these being useless for H. Bertinelli birthdays.
Tumblr media
Huntress Vol. 3 #1 (Dec 2011)
I don’t recognize the month abbreviation as a real abbreviation, but from the visible letter O I’m going to assume it means October. If it is, then the date is 20 October 1985. Sidenote: a 1985 birthdate during 2011 could put her age at about 26, which is actually quite close to how old she could’ve been based on pre-Flashpoint! 1985 has been given as Helena Wayne’s death year before, so it’s an interesting choice of a birth year for her. (Thanks to DC’s sliding timescale, though, birth years don’t actually mean anything in the comics.)
They don’t show her complete US passport, but I can see a “22” in line where the day of the month should be for her birthdate. This already contradicts the previous passport. This one uses Helena Bertinelli’s actual name, though–does that make it more relevant than the Carol one or this all still ridiculous because of the discrepancies?
Tumblr media
Worlds’ Finest Vol. 1 #1 (Jul 2012)
We can try to glean the US passport birth month from the passport number at the bottom. The first two digits (“12” here) indicate the agency that issued the passport. 12 means the Honolulu agency. Right after “USA” is supposed to be the birthdate plus an extra number, in the order of year/month/day with the year being the last two digits of a year. Here we encounter another problem. It says 810228. This would imply her birthdate is 1981/02/28. That’s February 28, 1981. Since the earlier line indicated her birthday fell on a 22nd, this already contradicts itself.
Tumblr media
Interpreting a Machine Readable Zone (MZR) on a Machine Readable Travel Document (MRTD)
However, I’d bet comic writers and artists aren’t always well versed in passport numbers (it’s already a stretch for me to bother checking it…). If they put the extra digit before the birthdate instead after, and the date is formatted month/day/year (the most common format in American English, so probably their first instinct), then we can drop the first 8 and it’s 10/22/8[?] with the last digit unknown. This would put her birthday as October 22, sometime in the 1980s. The 22 matches the earlier line, the October might match the previous passport if that really did say October (but contradicts the 20th), and the 1980s year could be 1985 to match the Italian passport.
At the end of the day I’m personally just going to let Helena Bertinelli be a Valentine’s born baby and call it a day, unless/until she gets a better one in the comics. For Helena Wayne I’d easily pick September 7th.
(My question is: did they give the crossbow vigilante a Valentine’s birthday as a Cupid joke??)
Dick Grayson
Dick has probably had the most birthdays of everyone (unless Bruce has more I don’t know about). All of them have their drawbacks.
In a main comics continuity, his most popular and most recent is “the first day of spring” so probably March 20th. This comes from Robin Annual 4 when his mom says she calls him Robin because he was born on the first day of spring. That presents some problems since there are other explanations given for the origin of “Robin,” including that his mom said he was “always bobbin’ along” (Dark Victory #12, page 17) or the original inspiration of Robin Hood (Detective Comics #38, p3).
Tumblr media
Robin Annual 4 (Jun 1995)
Before that, in Secret Origins Vol. 2 #50 (Aug 1990), Marv Wolfman wrote a version of Dick’s origins where Dick turned 10 a week before his parents died on Halloween. That would make his birthday October ~24th (presuming that “a week” before Halloween literally means 7 days here).
Tumblr media
Secret Origins Vol. 2 #50 (Aug 1990)
The first drawback of the October birthday is that it’s tied to Dick being 10 when his parents die on Halloween. Dick’s age and the date his parents die change a lot depending on the writer (Nightwing Vol. 1 #1 says his parents died June 27th, Dark Victory #8-9 says May, etc.). The second drawback is that few people remember this version of his birthday even exists.
Dick’s birthday is November 11th in Super DC Calendar 1976. Note: Despite being a non-diegetic calendar from almost 50 years ago, this source remains well known and used among comic enthusiasts (including those working at DC). Generally, I would say it should mainly apply just to pre-Crisis continuity, but it is also useful for characters that haven’t gotten updated birthdays ever since (like Roy Harper, Barbara Gordon, or Selina Kyle, for example).
Tumblr media
Super DC Calendar 1976
Sidenote: Since Damian doesn’t have a canon birthday, November 11th is favorite to steal for my own fan canon Damian birthday. Dick has plenty birthdays to share and I think it’s cute. @ DC, give Damian and Steph birthdays, they’ve been birthday-less for decades!
Indeed, DC writer Tim Sheridan and editor Mike Cotton debated whether Dick’s birthday was in March or November. They favored March 20th and wrote a birthday scene in Teen Titans Academy #1 (published March 23rd, 2021). The publishing time near Dick’s birthday was intentional, though the date isn’t mentioned within the comic itself.

The above birthdays were all meant to apply to a main comics continuity at some point. However, Earth-16, better known as the animated Young Justice universe (therefore outside of main comics continuity), says YJ Dick’s birthday is December 1st.
Tumblr media
Young Justice Vol. 2 #20 (Nov 2012)
Unlike Helena Bertinelli, Dick has plenty of comics birthdays to choose from, so personally I’ll only count Dec 1st as being the birthday for YJ animated/Earth-16 Dick Grayson until or unless it’s ever mentioned to apply to main comics continuity.
Barbara Gordon
Super DC Calendar 1976 says Barbara’s birthday is September 23rd.
Tumblr media
Super DC Calendar 1976
Since then, the only time I recall her birthdate hinted at is in Secret Origins #20 when her adoptive mom says her birthday is in the fall. This could support her birthday being September 23rd.
Tumblr media
Secret Origins Vol. 2 #20 (Nov 1987)
Although she has celebrated her birthday on panel since then (the end of Nightwing Vol. 2 #153), she hasn’t been given any other actual birthdate. So I’ll keep September 23rd and call it a day.
Selina Kyle
Super DC Calendar 1976 says Selina’s birthday is March 14th. Once again, although it hasn’t been mentioned within a comic, it’s stuck around in popular consciousness (see: Catwoman actress Zoë Kravitz wishing Selina a happy birthday on March 14th).
Tumblr media
Super DC Calendar 1976
Selina celebrated a birthday on panel in Catwoman (2002) #37 but the date was never mentioned. I don’t know of any other reference to her birthday, but my reading of Selina is thus far more sparse than my reading of the others.
Kate Kane
Kate’s birthday options all come from outside of the comics themselves.
In “An Un-Birthday Present,” season 1 episode 11 of Batwoman, a parallel version of her twin Beth had a driver’s license showing her date of birth as January 26, 1990. She and Kate later celebrated their birthdays on an episode aired Jan 26th, 2020. I don’t keep up with live action DC shows so I unfortunately can’t offer a screenshot (if anyone has one or the timestamp, please let me know!).
(I kinda wonder if somebody looked up Batwoman’s birthday for these episodes, saw Batgirl’s (Cass’s) birthday, and just ran with it. Batwoman and a Batgirl sharing a birthday is just. Ughhh.)
In 2012, one of her comic writers tweeted to choose a random date for her birthday and picked March 21st, which so far as I know has never been used as her birthday in comics.

Bruce Wayne
Bruce’s most popular birthday is February 19th, but his most recent one is October 7th from the digital-only comic Legends of the Dark Knight. I believe that’s the only time October 7th has been referenced, but I’ve heard the animated show The Batman said his birthday was in October (can’t confirm, haven’t watched it recently).
Tumblr media

Still, even associates of DC seem to remember his February 19th birthday better. In February 2023, Warner Bro’s Gotham Knights game did a sale for Bruce’s birthday. I’ve also heard the birthday was used in the Gotham TV show, but again, I don’t watch much live action DC shows.
The February 19th birthday appears to come from the 70s and 80s. It’s his birthday in the Super DC Calendar 1976, and in Batman Family Vol. 1 #11: “Suprise, Suprise!” (May 1977). Bob Rozakis (known as DC’s “Answer Man”) said Feb 19th was Bruce’s birthday in the letter column of Detective Comics #494 (Sep 1980).

Way back in the 40s, his birthday was in April, possibly April 7th. During a birthstone murder mystery, Bruce says his birthstone is a diamond, which is traditionally the April birthstone.
Tumblr media
World’s Finest Comics #33/6 (Mar-Apr 1948): “The 5 Jewels of Doom!”
Star Spangled Comics #91 (Apr 1949) might imply the exact date was April 7th but we’d have to assume the party is on his birthday and that “this month” refers to the publishing month of April. I believe this is where people get the April 7th birthday when they bring it up.
Tumblr media
Star Spangled Comics #91 (Apr 1949)
Early April also shines in Batman: Year One where it shows Bruce’s first night out as Batman being either the night of April 6th or the early morning of April 7th (Batman #405). So although the April Bruce birthday hasn’t been used in decades, it’s still a Batman birthday in a way.
I have also heard people say Frank Miller considered Bruce’s birthday to be in November. However, I have yet to find an original source of him saying that, and honestly (just like the “March 21st” birthday for Kate) if he never used it in any canon material I don’t put much weight in that.
Jim Gordon
The only birthday I’ve ever seen for Jim is January 5th from Super DC Calendar 1976.
Tumblr media
Super DC Calendar 1976
Alfred Pennyworth
Alfred’s birthday in Super DC Calendar 1976 is April 8th.
Tumblr media
Super DC Calendar 1976
In the Injustice: Gods Among Us universe (an alternate reality where the video game of the same name is set in), they show Alfred’s birth certificate, where it says his birthday is August 16th, 1943.
Tumblr media
Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Five #26 (Jun 2016)
Maybe you’ll notice that August 16th is Jason’s birthday. A little funny considering the issue features Alfred refusing to share his birthday only for us to learn it’s the same date as Jason’s. Still, annoying. There are so many days in the year! Stop choosing the same ones!
This Alfred birthdate runs into a similar problem Helena’s birthdates did: it’s not part of main comics canon, it’s an alternate universe, so it may not be applicable to the main comics universe.
Note: if we calculate that 1943 birth year from Jun 2016 when the comic was published, that’d make Alfred 72 soon to be 73. Does that mean anything in canon? Probably not, but oh well. Also...token British character born by Windsor Castle? …of course.
Personally, I would rather go with the April 8th birthday than the Injustice one, since Injustice is an alternate universe. Also, outside of the humor of it, the idea of Alfred and Jason sharing a birthday is a bit too much for me. Still, it’s up to people’s own cherry picking.
Chronology
The birthdays in publishing order alongside notable reboots. A soft-reboot refers to reboots that only changed a few details with minor consequences, keeping the overall continuity mostly intact. A major reboot has significant effects on continuity (too many to list).
1935-1986: Pre-Crisis era (Golden Age begins ~1946, Silver Age runs from late 50s--early 70s)
Mar-Apr 1948: Bruce’s birthday is in April
Apr 1949: Bruce has a birthday party on the 7th of “this month”
Skipping a good three decades because I barely even know what’s in there. Sorry lol
Mid 70s to early 90s: Bronze Age era
1976: the super dc calendar says Bruce’s birthday is February 19th, Alfred’s is April 8th, Dick’s is November 11th, Babs is September 23rd, Selina’s is March 14th, Jim’s is Jan 5th
Jun 1977: Bruce celebrates his birthday on February 19th
Sep 1980: letter collumnist says Bruce’s birthday is February 19th
Oct 1984: Helena Wayne’s birthday is on September 7th, 1959
Mar 1986: the major Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot (begins post-Crisis/New Earth era, many previous comics are now considered Earth-2 instead)
Nov 1987: Babs birthday is in fall
Aug 1990: Dick turns 10 a week before Halloween (probably October ~24th)
Sep 1994: Zero Hour soft reboot (Batman and Robin become urban legends so Robin is not allowed on video, Bruce’s parents’ murderer is changed to unknown instead of Joe Chill, Selina is no longer a once-prostitute)
Apr 1995: Dick’s birthday is the first day of spring (probably March 20th)
Oct 2002: Cass learns her birthday is January 26th
April 2003: Cass turns 18 on January 26th
Sep 2003: Tim turns 16 on July 19th
Mar 2004: Jason turns 18 on August 16th
Jun 2006: Infinite Crisis soft reboot (Joe Chill is restored as the arrested Wayne family murderer, Superboy-Prime's punch retroactively resurrects Jason)
Apr 2010: In the Batman: Brave and the Bold universe, Helena Bertinelli celebrates her birthday February 14th
Oct 2011: the major Flashpoint reboot (end of post-Crisis/preboot, begins the New 52 and changes the primary universe to Prime Earth; significant character/timeline changes and erasures)
Dec 2011: Helena Wayne’s fake Carol Bertinelli passport seems to list October 20th as a birthdate
Jul 2012: Helena Wayne’s fake Helena Bertinelli passport lists some 22nd unknown month, Oct 22nd, or Feb 28th birthday
Sep 2012: Batwoman writer J.H. Williams III randomly picks Kate’s birthday as March 21st on Twitter
Nov 2012: Earth-16/YJ animated Dick Grayson celebrates his birthday on December 1st
Jun 2016: In the Injustice: Gods Among Us universe, Alfred’s birth certificate says his birthday is August 16th
Jul 2016: Rebirth reboot (restores some pre-Flashpoint continuity, some characters regain previous histories but now semi-synchronized with the New 52 era)
Jan 2020: Batwoman TV show Kate celebrates her birthday on January 26th
Mar 2021: Writer Tim Sheridan says he & his editor chose March 20th as Dick’s birthday over the November option
May 2021: Infinite Frontier holds all previous continuities as potential canon, restoring more of pre-Flashpoint
Jun 2021: Bruce says his birthday is October 7th in a digital-only comic
Feb 2023: Gotham Knights game has a sale for Bruce’s birthday

1108: Facts and observations
•Day 0
1108 started on the 8th of November of 2015.
Jimin uploaded a video of him and Jungkook to twitter:
Tumblr media
On the 26th of January 2016, Jk uploaded a small snippet of a song he was covering.
•Day 100
And on the 15th of February of 2016, Jk uploaded the entire song Nothing Like Us and noted to listen to the lyrics as they were expressing what he wanted to say:
Tumblr media
In Korean culture, parents celebrate 100 days after a child is born. This is to indicate that the child made it through the first vulnerable phase in their life. In the same manner, the 100 days are celebrated by Korean couples.
And this is what Jk had to say 100 days after the 8th of November of 2015:
There's nothing like us There's nothing like you and me Together through the storm There's nothing like us There's nothing like you and me together, oh
•Day 366 (1 year)
On 08/11/2016, a year later, Jimin posted another video of them:
Tumblr media
•Day 732 (2 years)
On Oct. 28, 2017, Jungkook treated Jimin to a trip to Tokyo. It was because of this trip, that Jungkook released gcfTokyo on Nov. 08, 2017.
youtube
A fan used the images in the video and was able to determine the hotel and room jikook stayed at. It was room number 1108.
The video also used the song There For You by Troye Sivan:
Boy, I'm holdin' onto something Won't let go of you for nothing I'm runnin', runnin' just to keep my hands on you There was a time that I was so blue What I got to do to show you? I'm runnin', runnin' just to keep my hands on you
Day 811
On the 26th of January 2018, in a Japanese fancafe, Jimin gifted Jungkook a drawing of a set of champagne glasses and a bottle. Note the details of the glasses.
Tumblr media
•Day 900
On the 25th of April 2018, a day before the 900 day milestone, Jimin had a vlive where it was obvious he wasn't alone in the room. He kept looking to the side, laughing shyly and explained:
Tumblr media
After he said this, you can hear someone whisper, "Jimin."
Day 1000
On August 3rd 2018, Jk posted a selfie while they were all filming BV3:

During BV3, jikook were able to look around the city alone, and have a boat date under the moonlight.
Day 1013
As you all may know 10:13 is also known as Jimin ssi, or Jimin time. It only makes sense that this day would be special to jikook too.
On the 16th of August 2018, Jimin tweeted a series of 3 tweets:

Jungkook was the only member that appeared in the photos with Jimin. It is also interesting to note the 2 butterfly temporary tattoos he had on his hand.
Tumblr media
This is the same time when they had the photoshoot with the inflatable unicorn:
Tumblr media
The next day, Jimin uploaded a tweet with the caption "Love Ya", and one of the photos was him and Jk.

•Day 2855
On the 1st of September 2023, Jk hosted a short live to thank the fans for being present with him during so many birthdays. He ended his live quickly and it lasted 8:56 minutes:
Tumblr media
My impressions
Based on Korean customs, celebrating different day milestones is typical in a Korean couple.
While some may think that jikook started dating on the 8th of November 2015, I think that's when they decided to be intimate with each other.
I feel like a jikook kiss had already happened since the last time Jimin asked Jk for a kiss publicly was in September 2015 for Jk's birthday. From there, one can only think that things proceeded quite quickly.
I think that in recent years, we have observed less mentions of 1108 because of BTS' popularity and so many fans expecting something from jikook.
It's possible that jikook has decided to not make these milestones known like they did before, but every now and then, they still reference that number. Who knows when they will do it again.
But who is counting, right?

The Reunion
Character: Robert Joseph MacCready [#18 out of #52] Series: Fallout 4 Song Inspiration: Forest Sun - ‘Embers’ [#34 of #3000] Word Count: 697
TW: Canon-typical violence.
“Know no-one else can heed the calling That your only heart makes.”
Darkness had long since descended on the south-western outskirts of the Capital Wasteland, slivers of weak moonlight just lightly brushing the outline of the cracked pavement on which Robert Joseph MacCready walked, sniper rifle in hand, eyes darting at every imagined movement that danced in his peripherals. He had walked the same road many months ago - so many months that he had lost count - but his journey to the Commonwealth from the Capital Wasteland held a far brighter atmosphere than the one he was facing now as he approached his hometown. Despite the looming shadows and the ominous clicking sounds of radroaches underfoot, MacCready could not keep his nervous excitement contained as he fiddled with the wooden handle of his weapon.
His only child was just a few hundred feet away from him.
He could almost see Duncan in his mind’s eye, the young boy just barely old enough to walk, all chubby cheeks and bright smiles.
In another vision, he is covered in blue spots, confined to a bed in the attic of a farmhouse, voiceless, but face contorted in anguish.
MacCready quickly brushed the thought aside. He and the sole survivor of Vault 111 had found the cure together just over a month ago. Duncan would be fine.
Duncan would be fine.
Surely.
He clutched his rifle closer to his chest to quell his racing heart.
-
From the far distance, a Deathclaw roared in the night. The beast’s voice was carried by the wind and MacCready jumped, his weapon at the ready, stumbling backwards over a stray piece of concrete as night blended with the path and he lost his footing in the dark.
The piece of concrete suddenly groaned.
In his peripherals, the world around him began to move. Soft echoes of groans erupted from the shadows as a pack of ferals rose to their haunches, eyes devoid of emotion, but filled with anger.
Visions of a subway tunnel flooded MacCready’s mind as his gaze locked onto the farmhouse in front of him. The foul stench of decay assaulted his nostrils as the memory collided with reality. Specks of imaginary blood danced in his eyes.
He could hear Lucy’s screams echoing in the black.
Quickly, he cleared his throat and turned the barrel of his weapon to one of the shambling ghouls rising to their feet.
One quick headshot, and the feral was down, but two more had taken the place of their fallen brother as they emerged from the shadows.
The ferals were at his heel now, their garbled voices a cacophony of anguish and primal hunger. One gnarled feral at the front of the pack leaped forward and clawed MacCready’s arm, and he turned around and shot the abomination in one fell swoop. It crumpled onto the grass alongside the visions that fell to the wayside of his mind as he took aim and fired haphazardly into the crowd.
Feral after feral fell before him as he backed away, his back marching to the gate of the farmhouse. Growls and anguished cries penetrated the soft night-time air as MacCready fought with his memory that threatened to take him over. Fear gripped his shaking hands like radroaches swarming over a corpse, and the further he stepped back, the more ghouls appeared. Firing shot after shot after shot into the dense, ravenous crowd, he stumbled, panicked, as horrific visions of before danced unbidden, claws like knives and strength like boulders bearing down on him.
He blinked, and the world fell still.
-
Fighting blind, heavy panic, MacCready burst through the rickety oak door and charged through the dank hallway, taking the stairs two at a time. His lungs burned with exhaustion and the butt of his rifle dug sharply into his hip as he reached the top and he collided with the door to his son’s room, kicking it open with an almighty thud.
At the foot of the bed, a settler greeted MacCready with wide, knowing eyes, gesturing to the boy sitting on the straw-filled mattress. Stray beams of moonlight coated the boy’s pale face, but starlight danced in his eyes as he looked up to see his father at the door.
“Daddy?”
“Duncan!”

COULD WE HAVE DONE BETTER? - 9th May
The headline in the iNews today: “Coronavirus lockdown: The world reacts to Britain’s ‘incomprehensible’ response, botched testing and care home crisis” and wrote “While there is sympathy for Britain’s health workers, there is disbelief that Prime Minister Boris Johnson squandered vital weeks.  As Britain this week recorded the highest death rate in Europe – and the second in the world behind the US – an incredulous foreign press described the situation using colourful invective: it is ‘a shambles’, ‘a nightmare’ reflecting ‘negligence’, ‘complacency’ and ‘stupidity’.”
Contrast this with Johnson’s comeback speech on 27th April in which he said “I know there will be many people looking now at our current success and beginning to wonder whether now is the time to go easy on those social distancing measures.”
What did he mean by current success?
Did he mean the 25,000 official deaths (today over 31,000)?  Or did he mean the 100+ healthcare workers who had died by that time?  Or did he mean the financial hardship that millions of people have had to face?  Or did he mean the swathe the virus was cutting through care homes?  Or did he mean the tanking of the economy - the worst in 300 years
So could we have done better?  The answer is yes, yes, yes.  At every press conference we hear the mantra “we have taken the right decisions at the right time” but that’s not supported by any stretch of the imagination by the evidence.
WHAT THE MODEL SHOWS
We can use the model of the spread of coronavirus to show what would have happened if the same lockdown we entered on 23rd March had been deployed earlier.  The model is accurately tracking the number of deaths so we can use it with confidence to explore “what if” scenarios.  So I’ve chosen three dates - 15th February, 5th March and 12th March as alternative dates when a decision on lockdown could have been made.  The results are shown in Charts 9 and 16.
Tumblr media
CHART 9 shows the current projection (red line) for the cumulative number of deaths by the end of the year - around 62,000.  Compare that to the lines for the other dates which show that:
1. If we’d acted very quickly and decisively (15th Feb yellow line) deaths would have been kept to double figures;
2. Even 3 weeks later at 5th March (orange line) deaths, at round 10,000, would be a sixth;
3. But the delay from 5th March to 12th March was critical, increasing deaths by another 30,000.
Tumblr media
CHART 10 shows the same data but on daily basis.  Key features are:
1. The timing of the peak doesn’t change that much - within a matter of 10 days
2. Apart from the first date (15th Feb) the decline of the disease has a very long tail so the delay in deploying lockdown mean that in all scenarios the decision on how to relax the lockdown is difficult.
3. The peaks are important because they indicate the extreme pressure that would be put on the health and social care services.  A decision on 5th March would have kept that peak to a very manageable 115 deaths.  A week later the peak increases 6-fold but that number is about what we are seeing now about a month after the actual peak we’ve been through.
HINDSIGHT AND EVIDENCE
The argument usually put forward about this sort of analysis is that hindsight is a wonderful thing but doesn’t prove anything.  The difference with this though is:
1. The model doesn’t care about time.  It reflects the way a disease would spread at any time and is accurately tracking that spread now;
2. There is plenty of recorded evidence about what was going on leading up to the various dates on which the right decisions could have been made.
Let’s look at this evidence:
Upto February 15th:
1. From mid-January onwards the outbreak in China was in the news every day and we saw how serious it as by the fact that they had to build, from the ground up, two 1000-bed hospitals in Wuhan in 10 days.  These were completed by 5th February.
2. Despite this, on January 23rd Matt Hancock declared in Parliament that the risk was low and the NHS was “well-prepared and well-equipped” to deal with the disease.  He went further in saying that “the whole of the UK is always well-prepared to deal with these types of outbreaks”.  He also said that the UK was one of the first countries to have developed a world-leading test for the virus. The shadow minister warned that a global pandemic could be avoided if all governments took the right measures in a timely fashion.
3. By 30th January the disease had spread to 18 countries outside China showing how infectious the disease was.  WHO declared a global emergency - a “PHEIC” or Public Health Emergency of International Concern.  They gave clear advice to all countries to “test, test, test”.
4. On 31st January the first case was reported in the UK.
5. On 3rd February Johnson made a speech in Greenwich again underplaying the importance of Coronavirus and portraying the UK as a superman ready to lead the economic world through it.
6. So the scene was set by early February for the government’s tone and approach - ignoring the evidence; ignoring outside advice; underestimating the seriousness of the situation; and over-estimating our capability (some might even say lying).
7. Those first two weeks in February could have been used to prepare for lockdown but, of course, that didn’t fit with Johnson’s view.
Upto March 5th
1. The concession to the public to show it was being taken seriously was to “wash your hands”.
2. Through January and February Johnson missed 5 COBRA meetings
3. On February 28th WHO raised its risk assessment to “very high”, its highest level of alert.
4. Meanwhile Italy had replaced China on our TV screens.  The first deaths there occurred on 22 February and by the beginning of March, the virus had spread to all regions.  Social media was full of Italian doctors warning how serious this was.
5. Unperturbed by all of this Johnson delayed his “emergency” COBRA meeting until after his long-weekend break and then on March 3rd Johnson once again repeated that the NHS and the country were very well prepared.
6. On 5th March the first death was reported.  Alarm bells should have been sounding because of the evidence from China and Italy and the exponential way in which the disease spreads.
Upto March 12th
This was the crucial week and by the end of it:
1. The opportunity for lockdown had been lost through further delay and a further 30,000 people would die.
2. Italy went into lockdown on 9th March.
3. On March 11th WHO declared a global pandemic.
4. Johnson did a remarkable about-turn, still not accepting that everything they had done so far was wrong but saying that the “science had changed”.  What he meant was that Imperial College had presented a report showing that there would be potentially half a million deaths and the NHS would be overwhelmed if Johnson didn’t enforce a lockdown.
5. So a week after he’d confidently told the country there was still nothing to worry about he now said that “loved ones would die”.
6. Now they definitely knew the seriousness of the problem but still the lockdown was not imposed.
Upto March 23rd
Not only was the lockdown not imposed but large gatherings were still permitted - the Cheltenham festival being the most notable.  These 11 days of delay will have cost another 20,000 lives.

This year The Philadelphia Flower show is doing something new. They are holding a photo contest. I heard about this contest last summer through my nephew who works for the Flower Show. Knowing how much I love to shoot photographs of my flowers, Andrew thought I would be interested in entering.
After he sent me the link to the contest and I entered six of my photographs in three of the six categories.  Knowing that the judging and notification of finalists was around the same time I would be on a Panama Canal cruise with a friend of mine, I decided to get prints made of all the photos I entered. Although there was no fee to enter, it was up to finalists to mount each selected photograph on black foam core, trim it to size and then mail it to the contest coordinator by Feb. 25th. I though I had a slim chance of having any of my photos selected but, just in case, I would be prepared if I was pleasantly surprised.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
When I returned home to PA on Feb 4th, I spent a couple of days deleting emails. While at this task one afternoon I received a text from Andrew
“Congratulations! You made the cut for category 195-Avant-Garde at the Flower show.”
I did? Wow!
Turns out I had accidentally deleted the notification emails. I went back and scoured through my trash bin and found all 3. Two were rejections but sure enough, there was one –
“Hello Jennifer Congratulations!”
This is where Gremlins took over what should have been a relativity easy process and turned it into an absolute fiasco.  I’m talking about the Gremlin that ate after midnight, and got wet. Not the cute fuzzy Gremlins.
I quickly opened the email and I was crestfallen. Wouldn’t you know the one photo that was accepted was also the only print  that looked terrible. Either I provided Shutterfly with a crappy file or they printed it badly. In any case, I had to have this photo reprinted and rushed to me so I could get it mailed out by the deadline stated in the email of February 15th! This didn’t leave me much time.
For 12 years or so I was a certified picture framer. I even had my own shop at one point. So I have a shops-worth of framing supplies and equipment in my basement. While I waited for the rush delivery of my accepted photograph, I rooted around in my boxes of mat boards hoping to find a piece of black foam core. Wouldn’t you know  I have several sheets of white foam core and hundreds of mat boards but no black foam core.  Luckily, my local Walmart had some black foam core and spray adhesive.
I was nervous unwrapping the photograph when it arrived, fearful that it would look dull and out of focus like the first copy. If that were the case I wouldn’t be able to send it. I would have to withdraw. But no, it looked great! I got it flattened out and ready to mount.
While looking for the foam core in my studio, I too was searching for my heavy metal utility knife. It was one that had belonged to my dad and I had used it for years. I couldn’t find it anywhere. But my husband & I keep a yellow plastic one in the kitchen that we use for opening packages.  I believe the blade in this knife had never been changed. It wouldn’t cut butter let alone trim this photograph so I replaced the blade.
And, I promptly poked my finger.Blood was everywhere!
I wrapped my finger in a paper towel while I trimmed the mounted photo. Luckily no blood got on my picture, but the yellow cover of the utility knife looked like it had been lifted from a crime scene!
Off to the post office I went, finger now wrapped in a band-aid. As I drove into the parking lot, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was packed with cars. I swear it looked like 3 days before Christmas and everyone in town had forgotten to mail their packages! Once inside the tiny room, I found a line of about 10 people. I busied myself finding an envelope big enough for the photo and I finished taping the cardboard around my photograph. After about twenty minutes, it was my turn.
“This has to arrive by Friday 15th. ”
“Not a problem”.
I included a self-addressed stamped envelope, sealed up the whole package and finally breathed a sigh of relief when my photo was among the huge stack of mail collecting behind the counter.
Friday night I’m watching TV and decide to check my email. I see an email from the contest coordinator:
Jennifer,  I received your beautiful photograph today and unfortunately two corners are badly bent! Can you please reprint, matte and send to me again ASAP! Unfortunately I can not pass this for the show. Your deadline to have to me is no later than Feb 22! If you can not make this happen I will need to know ASAP so I can let the alternate know.
Thank you and I’m so sorry. Next time please use a much thicker, cardboard material to support the photo in shipping.
Sally
Oh no! This is Friday the 15th. I am supposed to leave for Florida on Wednesday the 20th. Panic sets in. Can I get a new photo printed, shipped to me, mounted and mailed to her in a week? Shutterfly was giving me a guaranteed delver date of Feb. 20th. It could work but I would have to have the supplies on hand when I arrived in the evening and rush the picture to the post office the next day mailing it next-day-air. I could do it but I would need help.
I called my husband and asked him, if needed, could he could go to the Walmart near us in Florida and get a piece of black foam core. ”
Yeah, no problem. Just let me know. I can go tomorrow.”
I also sent a text to my sister & brother-in-law asking if there was any place around here that could print the photo while I wait? No sense having to pay for rushed delivery if I can take care of this locally.
Turns out our local FedEx does do printing! They do what’s called-Personal Prints up to 8×10 and they also do Poster Sized prints starting at 16×20.
Seriously?
I bet you can’t guess what size my photo needed to be.
Right, 11×14. And, they don’t offer 11×14.
Back to the Shutterfly rushed delivery option.
My sister in law suggested I have the print sent to her, she would mount it and get it mailed for me. I thought about it for a minute and decided it’s too stressful a task for someone who has never spray-mounted before. Also, that utility blade does like to draw blood. I declined that offer and, afraid I was going to lose the guaranteed delivery from Shutterfly of Feb.20,  I quickly placed a super-rush delivery with Shutterfly and I decided to go with my original plan of having the print sent to Florida. I could do the work when I arrived.
Gremlins don’t like getting wet and my plan was beginning to feel like a wash out.
Monday the 18th was Presidents Day & there is no mail. Does Shutterfly use regular USPS, UPS or FedEx to deliver? couldn’t remember. Did their guaranteed delivery take this holiday into account?
A giant snow storm is forecast for Wednesday. Of course it is. It always snows when I go to Florida in the winter. it doesn’t matter what day I decide to fly down, it’s going to snow and I’m going to have to reschedule my flight.
I kept a close eye on the tracking of my Shutterfly order and the weather forecast. Both were dismal. Shutterfly’s guaranteed delivery of Feb. 20th was changed to Feb. 20-21st.
No, no, no. This is no good. There is no way I can get my mounted picture delivered to the contest coordinator by the 22nd if I don’t receive it by the 20th.
The snow storm forecast went from bad –
‘Snow and ice from Tuesday 19th through 20th’
to, hey wait this might work
‘Snow starting Wednesday night through Thursday’
to I’m doomed and probably won’t be leaving Wednesday after all-
‘Snow staring early Wednesday 6-8 inches with ice in the afternoon’
Oh great. Plan B. Marcus isn’t going to like plan B.
Turns out Shutterfly uses UPS and delivered my photo on Monday 18th. Really? I wish I had known they were going to be able to deliver it early. I could have mounted it and and mailed it out in plenty of time. No need to worry about snow or Plan B.
Plan B, as it turns out didn’t work out as expected.
On Valentines day Marcus calls me from Walmart to tell me they only have white foam core.
“Really, oh ……! OK, OK, you will have to find a Michael’s or a frame shop and get a piece from there. ”
I texted him the addresses of Michael’s stores near us in Florida. Turns out there are three pretty close by our apartment. He got two pieces ‘Just in case” also was able to get new utility knife and some sturdy cardboard. Yay!
When I saw that the photo would be delivered on Monday the 18th I suggested he go ahead and mount it and get it in the mail.
“I may not make it down in time because of the snow.”
Always the optimist, “Na, you’ll be okay, I’ll wait.”
Today Feb. the 19th, I called Marcus telling him it’s looking more and more like i’m not going anywhere on Wednesday. There is already a ‘No fee for rescheduling canceled flights’ notice on Jet Blue’s website and no snow is falling…yet.  Anyway, I walked him through how to spray mount a photograph and trim it. I suggested he do a practice magazine cover or something to get the feel for it and call me back. He agreed to give it a go.
“I can’t get the page to stick.”
That’s weird.
“You may not have used enough spray stuff. Try again while I have you on the phone.” he put me on speaker phone.
I hear the spray can over the phone and then he says “It stuck that time. I think I used too much, there is a sticky puddle outside the photo.”
“Try another page and don’t hold the can so close. 3-4 inches away should be fine.”
This worked fine.
“My fingers are full of glue.”
“You can get that off with alcohol or acetone.”
“Okay that worked but I’m afraid I’m going to get fingerprints all over your photograph.”
“You’ll be fine. You just washed your hands in alcohol. There’s no oil left to leave prints.”
Now I suggested he try trimming the foam core to get the feel of it.
“I don’t want to cut these out because I’ll get glue all over the ruler. then when I trim the photo, it will get glue all over it.”
I suggested he do a practice cut on the extra piece of foam core that doesn’t have any glue on it yet. I could hear him through the phone grunting and groaning as he tried. It didn’t sound like it was going well at all.
“Marcus, come here. Stop. You’re too nervous and getting too worked up. Something will go wrong because you are too worried about messing it up. Take the photograph and the black foam core back to Michael’s and ask them to dry mount it for you while you wait.”
“They can do this?”
“Yes. they do it all the time.”
“What if they mess it up? You only ordered one copy. What happens if they mess it up?”
“How about we don’t create another problem before we have to? If that happens, then I email the coordinator telling her Michael’s ruined the photo & I will not be able to send my photo. I’ll be screwed. but, this isn’t going to happen. Relax.”
I’m happy to report that Michael’s broke the Gremlin’s spell over this endeavor.  My photo is mounted, trimmed and wrapped in heavy cardboard. The gal even adhered the required information on the back of the photograph. It’s ready to go into the mail and will arrive by Friday.
This free submission contest has cost me somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 so far. I wonder how much rushed delivery costs?
I’m not saying I’d like to go through all of this stress again. This hasn’t been fun. But somehow it’s worth all of this to have my photograph among the other finalists in the Philadelphia Flower Show! Maybe it will win a ribbon!
If you go, send me a photograph of the display. Unfortunately, after all of this, I won’t be able to make the show this year. When I finally do get out of town after the snow, I will be testing out my new camera on a much anticipated Galapagos Island trip!

Archivist turns up counterfeit $100 tale
By Peter Huntoon and Eric Head
Occasionally large size U.S. counterfeits turn up, but usually virtually nothing is known about them. Here we have a case where at least the final victims of the fraud are identified.
Eric Head is an Assistant Archivist at the Knox County Archives, which is a division of the Knox County Public Library in Knoxville, Tenn. One mission of the archives is to preserve the non-current permanent records created by the county government since its founding in 1792.
County Archivist Doris Martinson was processing old court records dating from the 1870s when she came across the counterfeit $100 1862 legal tender note illustrated here. It was among court documents that placed it into its historic context. This is that tale.
Front and back of the counterfeit $100 1862 legal tender note at the center of a court case between a fertilizer company based in Savannah, Ga., and a Knoxville, Tenn., bank. (Image courtesy of author)
The spurious note is a well-known counterfeit from that era. However, unlike its known brethren, it is in unusually good condition.
The Archives staff was surprised to find it, because they have processed other court records pertaining to counterfeits that contained only facsimile drawings of the subject notes.
The case file providing the paper trail was for N. A. Hardee’s Son & Co. vs The People’s Bank of Knoxville, filed April 6, 1870, in the Knox County Circuit Court as docket #13623. The Hardee firm was located in Savannah, Ga.
There were two county courts at the time, the Knox County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions and Knox County Circuit Court. The former was a civil court that heard cases involving small sums. The latter dealt with criminal cases and civil matters involving larger sums as well as appeals that bounced up to it from the lower court.
The case of our $100 was first heard before Justice of the Peace R. D. Jourolmon in the lower court. The records from the lower court did not survive, but the essence of what transpired is revealed in paperwork attending an appeal that moved the case into the Circuit Court.
The counterfeit was part of a cash payment of approximately $950 sent to N. A. Hardee’s Son & Co. by C. A. Michell. Co-author Head has been able to identify Michell as Clifton Armstrong Mitchell, a watchmaker/jeweler in Knoxville.
Mitchell had obtained the cash from the People’s Bank of Knoxville. He sent the cash by Southern Express to the Hardee firm in Savannah, where it was received on or about May 12, 1868. The payment consisted of nine $100s, two $20s and some lesser notes, along with a letter transmitting same. John L. Hardee received the payment from the messenger as a sealed package. Hardee opened the package, verified the amount, and turned the cash over to Edward Pape, the firm’s cashier and bookkeeper. Pape immediately took the cash to The Merchants National Bank of Savannah, where he attempted to deposit it. The receiving teller condemned the note in question as counterfeit, and undoubtedly it was he who clipped the two right corners from it in order to kill it.
It was standard practice during this era to cancel counterfeits by any number of means such as writing, stamping, or branding the words “counterfeit” or “bad” on them, or punch canceling or clipping them. Then they were simply returned to the depositor, who was stuck with them identically as with a returned bad check.
Obviously, what happened is that the Hardee firm brought suit in Jourolmon’s court in Knoxville against the People’s Bank of Knoxville, which had furnished the bad note to Mitchell. The suit was filed April 1, 1870, and the demand of the Hardee firm was that the bank make good on the note. Someone scrawled “Exhibit A” on the back of the note as the case developed.
$100 in 1868 dollars represented almost $1,700 today, so it wasn’t an inconsequential hit.
Jourolmon ruled in favor of the Hardee firm, causing the bank’s attorney to lodge an appeal with the Circuit Court on June 17, 1870, challenging the ruling. The appeal centered on depositions ordered on April 2, 1870, of John Hardee and Edward Pape at the Hardee firm by J. P. Jourolmon. This moved the case up to the Circuit Court before Judge Elijah T. Hall.
On June 6, 1871 – over a year later – the lawyers for the People’s Bank filed an exception with the court protesting the admittance of the deposition. The People’s Bank claimed that they had informed Jourolmon they were not ready for an April 1870 trial and were told by him that depositions therefore would not be taken until May 25, 1870. In fact, the depositions were taken April 26, 1870, and were the basis for the verdict issued against The People’s Bank.
The lawyers for N. A. Hardee’s Son & Co. then filed an appeal to the exception with the clerk of the Circuit Court on Feb. 22, 1872.
By then, the claim of the Hardee firm against the People’s Bank was more than two-and-a-half years old. The lawsuit was withdrawn the same day, so it appears that an out-of-court settlement was reached, the details of which are lost to history.
  Some Historic Connections
N. A. Hardee’s Son & Co., Bay Street, Savannah, Ga., were agents and purveyors of fertilizer for cotton and other crops that was supplied by Clark’s Cove Guano Company of New Bedford, Mass. It was packaged in sacks labeled Hardee’s Cotton Boll ammoniated super-phosphate.
The president of The People’s Bank of Knoxville at the time of the lawsuit was Charles McClung McGhee. He was a member of the prominent McClung family of Knoxville that produced Lee McClung, who went on to become the 22nd U.S. Treasurer between 1909 and 1912. Charles McGhee was a prominent businessman who organized the merger of a number of railroads to create the East Tennessee Virginia & Georgia Railroad. The railroad merged with the Richmond and Danville Railroad in 1894 to became the Southern Railroad.
The McClung family produced local benefactors who established the Frank H. McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture on the campus of the University of Tennessee and the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection in the Knox County Public Library. Calvin was Treasurer Lee McClung’s brother.
As these things go, the cashier of the People’s Bank from 1869 forward was one Joseph R. Mitchell. He happened to be the brother of jeweler Clifton Mitchell, who obtained the counterfeit from the People’s Bank the previous year.
  The Counterfeit
Hessler & Chambliss (2006) state that “There is a well-known counterfeit [that] has a slightly inferior engraving of the spread eagle, but the most obvious defect is on its back.  On the genuine notes the tiny ‘100’ digits are rightside-up on the right and inverted (thus reading ‘001’) on the left.  On the counterfeit these are reversed, thus ‘100’ on the left and ‘001’ on the right.”
The subject note is one of these and simulates Fr. 165a. No one has definitively identified the counterfeiter.

Phoenix Events, Activities and Festivals - April
Typically the weather is still good in April, with warm temperatures but usually not yet in the triple digits. We’ll still see several Phoenix-area events in April that take place outdoors.
These are many of the community events that you can count on year in and year out in April. All dates, prices, and activities mentioned are subject to change without notice. Check the website or call to confirm information.
The activities in this event calendar are appropriate for families unless otherwise indicated. If the event is free, I’ll mention that, too.
Looking for big name concerts, shows or theatre? Check this calendar for April performances.
