ahhhhHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Yes I watched the Knives Out movie. And just to summarise my feelings for it in the least spoilered way in one long runon....
It was that moment when you watch a movie that GETS suspension of disbelief in the way that you have a wild storyline told in the most loving and believable way. That moment when you watch a movie where it kinda feels that the storyteller was EXCITED about telling their weird but FUN tale and draws you in with that. That moment when a movie also understands pacing and characterisation and moves it all along in such a fun way. Where you don't need scenes that show a character's personality because every. bit. counts in the most DELIGHTFUL of ways both showing the characters and having those moments of characterisation be relevant to the mystery. That moment when you watch a movie that has a message about kindness and the complexity of human relationships. That moment when a movie is really just fun and such a delight to watch because it knows how to hook you in....like
By no means is it a deep deep meaningful soul shattering movie. But it IS the kind of movie I think I would want to rewatch with how delightful and intriguing it is and how it just seems like everyone is having a grand ol time with this story....

yeah yeah las vegas arc kim dokja's in america 🦅🦅🦅 but i am actually so glad singshong is expanding on anna and the zarathustras. as selena kim leads kdj+lhh through the zarathustras' headquarters (a repurposed 5 star hotel), there's a few things pointed out that i enjoy
even during these early scenarios, anna was already preparing for when the apocalypse is over, as kdj spots plants from other planets (e.g. chronos) being grown. and highlighting the supportive incarnations working behind the scenes, with many of them being older incarnations whose physical ability might not keep up with younger incarnations. and even with this big group, it seems organized. THIS is more what i expected from a prophet. though kim dokja isn't interested. at least lee hakhyun is impressed

One of my favorite ORV headcanons is that TWSA has as much practical living advice as it does the metaphorical.
There's a 3-page long description of lsh dressing and bandaging yjh's wounds in the early rounds, intimately describing all the bruises and cuts and scrapes and the way they were handled. Kdj saw this as a humanizing moment for yjh and shipping fuel, but the next day he gets beat up by bullies and decided to dress his wounds himself since the school nurse isn't around (and they were getting tired of him anyway). It's sloppy and he had to rebandage himself after it unravelled, but it prevented an infection, and he got better over time.
In another chapter, yjh notices ljh having panic attacks in the middle of battle and teaches her a few tricks to steady your breathing and center herself faster as part of combat training. The description feels like text you'd see in a training handbook and completely breaks any sense of pacing. Kdj remembers it the next time he has one and was able to calm himself down before his relatives find him and punish him like they did before.
There was a chapter that came out around the time kdj was job hunting, where the party gets tangled in a subscenario involving securing a position through interviews. It felt contrived even with kdj's tolerance to TWSA shenanigans, but he takes note of what everyone does anyway and tries some of them in his job interviews. He comments that some of the actions felt unrealistic with his own experiences in job interviews; tls123 replied with a lighthearted apology (she's never had to bother with interviews, and she doubts she'll ever get to; she's grateful that it was still useful.)
In yet another chapter, yjh avoids the eyes of fellow incarnations and picks his words correctly in a game of three questions with nosy constellations. They were oddly dry and mundane for an apocalypse setting with superhuman powers. Kdj remembers them the next time he spots paparazzi lurking around the corners.
A chapter has yjh instructing knw, ljh and yma on how to make do with instant ramyun and add a few things to it to keep it somewhat nutritious (yjh isn't happy about it but it's the least he can do since they're gonna split for a multi-day scenario and he can't cook for them). Kdj remembers it when he tried to make ramyun for the first time in his new place after moving out of his relatives'. He remembers curling his hand to chop the scallions because knw got scolded for improper knife handling, and he remembers when to put in the egg because ljh got sternly corrected for confidently shouting out the wrong answer. Kdj didn't injure himself, and it was the fanciest and most delicious meal he ate in a while. (He remembers yjh patting his sister's head for getting everything right, and almost brings his own hands to his head before stopping; no one's gonna praise a college student for making ramyun right.)
(Kim Dokja, rereading TWSA over and over again in the train, feels the love and has no idea what to do with it.)
(05/06: added the food segment because i loved all the food-related notes <3)

How are y’all convincing people to read orv???
I can’t seem to explain the concept without it being about as tangled as a neglected slinky.

hi! i know that i'm fated to read your every work despite not knowing the media half the time. this time i would like to finally be one step ahead. so uhh. where do i read orv? do i go for the webtoon or the novel? to clarify, i did try to search, but got confused by reddit. also i am going to watch trigun. i've been eyeing animorphs too but the 54 (?) books are making me go hmm. thank you for existing you're pretty great. you're like the spiderman of writing but instead you got asbestos rat'd.
THIS ASK IS INSANE. WE'RE REFERENCING MY LORE NOW?
But thank you, you're insane. People ask why I have stupid high standards for the fics i post on AO3 and it is because there are people like you who will just read whatever regardless of whether or not it's good. I have a responsibility.
This ask also made me wonder if I have good taste. Because every time somebody says this my first reaction is "oh god and the source materials aren't even good". I read a lot of trashy stuff (but, like, define trashy), and I consume too many bad things to be able to say I have discerning taste. If I enjoy something I almost never call it bad, because things were made to be enjoyed and I enjoyed them then they had value in at least one aspect. If you were to ask me if my favorite TV show of all time the Incredible Hulk 1974 was actually, unironically, good, then I'd break into a cold sweat. Is somebody bad because it's camp? Is something bad only if it's unintentional camp?
Regardless, I never write fic for something that isn't only like 80% good - there's a sweet spot of 'good enough for me to obsess over' and 'bad enough that I'm rewriting it in my head'. It's rare I write for anything I find completely good. Which is why I feel bad when people say that they're reading this thing I'm writing fic for jalksdf there's better things out there I SWEAR.
ORV is in the sweet spot of "this isn't high literature" and "this has given me brain worms". Definitely for sure start with the webtoon - the webnovel is clunkily translated, you don't read it for the writing at all, and it is also a literal million words. Don't read the webnovel unless you're like "I'm going insane and I need more of this". It starts off kind of slow ("This is a well executed very banal isekai") and you're like a frog in the pot of it slowly going more insane until you're a ways in and you are in a tangle of ridiculously complicated gambits and convoluted storytelling. There is literally no other way to describe it than the Homestuck of webnovels. If you're completely unfamiliar with isekai that's fine, but as a warning - ORV being your first webtoon/webnovel isekai is like your first shoujo manga being Ouran High Schol Host Club, or your first magical girl show being Madoka, or your first mecha anime to be Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's one of the best works in its genre but it's supposed to be viewed in context of the genre. Or maybe it's more like if Homura starred in Evangelion, which was Ouran. I'm just saying words.
Animorphs is kind of like Mother 3 in which everybody who has ever read/played it said that it changed them as a person, it changed their relationship with media and storytelling forever, if you read/play it you will be born again from the world's egg, etc. Works that genuinely become part of your personality. I also never recommend it to people because it is incredibly hit or miss. I remember using a spreadsheet of just "what books are skippable or not" because some of them are incredibly weird and some of them are incredibly weird in the bad way. The only Animorphs fic I've ever written is from 2019 so it's also not that great. Each book only takes an hour to read and the pdfs are free online, so it's incredibly accessible in terms of the reading experience, but it's kinda the Animorphs gestalt that changes you forever and not the individual books. I try not to recommend stuff that's like 25% bad.
Watch Trigun if you like what Trigun is - it's not going to deliver on something it's not. Also watch 98 first. Watch Stampede/read Trimax if you want more Trigun. The Trigun fic is based off Stampede but refer to my "I only write fic for smth that's 80% good and not 100% good" statement.
Also I think being bit by an asbestos rat just means that I probably have mold and drywall in my lungs, which would explain a lot about this blog. Thanks for the ask I love it.
#you have to feel kind of guilty saying “this is the homestuck of webnovels” and reccomending it with a straight face#and like i wouldn't outright reccomend it#it has plenty of problems. but also you dont care about the problems much ya know.#my asks#my writing#it is genuinely so funny that Animorphs and M3 girlies are Like That#sir this is a children's novel where a teenager vomits crocodiles#and it's not as good when you just hear people describe it like “oh read animorphs its sooo fucked up and edgy and people die”#like. yes its good because its fucked up. but also#the humor and levity and silliness is important and makes the fuckery meaningful#i think mostly it's the fact that animorphs will present to you some very shallow stuff and then ask you to engage with it like its real#its not realism or grittiness or edge#it just presents you with Very Basic Children's SciFi and goes#these are real children. all life is real sentient life.#yes the CIA really did do that.#when the enemy is killed the enemy is dead. do you understand.#thats what makes it a rly good childrens novel but also what makes it so disturbing as an adult#whose been asked to fictionalize suffering countless times in scifi#and on the tv. and in the news. and from each other.#and when we're presented with normal fictional suffering and the narrative is like No - Look At This#it changes how you engage with scifi and media in general#there's a lot of 'Jake' characters out there. but you can't look at them the same way.#did not expect the tag essay to be about animorphs this time.

HI WEI i love hearing all these essay updates although they inflict immediate psychic damage on me upon reading them i'm actually kind of invested in it now i <3 essays and orv is such good essay material just because there's so much going on and it gets sort of tangled up but if you manage to organize it the right way then it all comes together and…. UMMM. orv. orv is. it makes me. it's. i think we all get it. do you think you'll maybe make it available to read for us wei fans here on tumblr when it's finished ? well either way i am cheering you and praying you overcome the essay writing horrors and orv normal levels GODSPEED
NICOOO HII thankyou for enjoying my [waves hand] yeah this !!!! atp theres like a 90% chance that i will make my essay available to my fellow orvers bc . we are all having ourbrains mashed by orv always so i want to contribute 💜 BUT UR SO RIGHT.. orv is actually too good for essay material i literally agonized for weeks over a topic cause there were TOO MANY OPTIONS it was so hard!!! but im really satisfied w what i picked... except that there's some parts i had to cut out, cause i only get so many pages to write and itd get too complicated for a non-orver (my prof) to read and still understand ahfhwhd TT TT like i already am just calling yjh and kdj the "Protagonist" and "Reader' respectively cause thats the narrative role they serve .. so much fun that i get to submit an essay abt orv as an academic paper though!!

Understanding the Power of Blockchain in Cryptocurrency: How Decentralized Ledger Technology is Revolutionizing the Way We Exchange Value
Cryptocurrency is a digital currency that uses cryptography to secure and verify transactions and to control the creation of new units. It is decentralized, meaning that it operates independently of a central authority like a government or a bank. This makes it a popular choice for people who value financial privacy and autonomy.
While most cryptocurrencies are built on blockchain technology, it is possible to have cryptocurrencies without blockchain. However, without a blockchain, the cryptocurrency may lack some of the key features that make blockchain-based cryptocurrencies unique.
One example of a cryptocurrency without a blockchain is IOTA. IOTA is a distributed ledger technology (DLT) that uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) called the Tangle to store and verify transactions. Unlike blockchain, which stores transactions in blocks that are linked together in a chain, the Tangle stores transactions as nodes in a network. Each transaction in the Tangle verifies two previous transactions, creating a web-like structure that is not linear like blockchain.
IOTA uses a consensus mechanism called the Coordinator to validate transactions and prevent double-spending. The Coordinator is a centralized entity that ensures the security of the network by approving transactions and preventing malicious activity. While the Coordinator is meant to be a temporary solution until the network is large and secure enough to operate without it, some critics argue that it makes IOTA less decentralized and more vulnerable to attacks.
Another example of a cryptocurrency without a blockchain is Nano. Nano is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency that uses a technology called block-lattice to store and verify transactions. Unlike blockchain, which has a single chain of blocks, each user on the Nano network has their own blockchain called a account-chain. Each account-chain has two types of blocks: send blocks and receive blocks. When a user sends Nano to another user, a send block is created in their account-chain. When the recipient receives the Nano, they create a receive block in their own account-chain to confirm the transaction.
Nano uses a consensus mechanism called Open Representative Voting (ORV) to verify transactions and prevent double-spending. ORV allows Nano holders to vote for representatives who verify transactions on their behalf. While Nano is more decentralized than IOTA because it doesn't rely on a centralized entity like the Coordinator, some critics argue that ORV is vulnerable to Sybil attacks, where an attacker creates multiple fake accounts to manipulate the voting process.
Cryptocurrencies without blockchain have some advantages over blockchain-based cryptocurrencies. They may be faster and more scalable because they don't have to store transaction data in blocks or wait for blocks to be verified by miners. They may also be more energy-efficient because they don't require the same level of computational power as blockchain-based cryptocurrencies. However, they may also be less secure and more vulnerable to attacks because they lack the same level of decentralization and consensus mechanisms as blockchain-based cryptocurrencies.
In conclusion, while cryptocurrencies without blockchain are possible, they may lack some of the key features that make blockchain-based cryptocurrencies unique. The examples of IOTA and Nano demonstrate that there are alternative technologies to blockchain that can be used to create decentralized digital currencies, but each technology has its own advantages and disadvantages. As the cryptocurrency space continues to evolve, we may see more experimentation with different types of DLTs and consensus mechanisms to create even more innovative digital currencies.

The Rescue
Patrick drove west away from the last remains of humanity on on Idyll - maybe in the universe. He patted his side where a repulsor was holstered. It was probably the third time he had checked to make sure it was charged and working. He knew what was out there. He had actually seen the beasts, the centaurs. How the hell did someone come up with that name? They were deranged killer monster ants as big as an ORV.
He knew what to do, though. He was a marine after all. Or he had been a marine 10 years ago. Now he was a security guard. He broke up fights at the bars. When there were bars. A humph escaped his lips as he thought about it, prompting a reaction from the woman seated next to him.
"You Ok Patrick?" she asked. The woman, he thought her name was Divya, was a medic, or had studied some medicine. Patrick wasn't sure. He wasn't thrilled she was coming because he considered it too dangerous.
"Fine," he said. "Just thinking about what's ahead."
"Yeah, I know," she said, looking toward the area where Lakeside had once been. "I desperately want to see it, but I also don't."
The ruin of Lakeside still smoked and the surrounding forest, lush and wet as it was, burned from the massive nuclear explosion.
Patrick grimaced and tried not to talk to himself, a bad habit he had acquired while patrolling. The big man was never quite right about how to interact with people. Far from being introverted, he loved being around people, but he seemed to always do something that caused people to raise their eyebrows, smirk or shake their heads. After nearly three decades of it, he had decided a new start on a different planet would be a good chance to embed deeply with a new family of colonists, bonded together by shared experience.
Sadly, Patrick found that many of his problems followed him 21 light years to Idyll. Unconsciously, he accelerated the ORV to nearly 60 KPH, the trailer attached to it, bouncing with the extra speed over the packed gravel road that stretched between the farm and the mine. From the mine, it would be another 15 kilometers to where the people were stranded with the other ORV.
Divya looked over at him again and appeared to be pondering whether to tell him to slow down, but instead she just grabbed the "Oh shit" bar on the A-pillar of the vehicle.
They had passed into the forest now, the massive trunks of the trees that people were calling "Jupiters," with their trunks three meters across and giant oval leaves with a smaller hole in the middle of them that resembled the eye of the great gas giant in Earth's system. Also along the road were a tangle of the beautiful Idyll flower, stretching 6 meters into the air, their blossoms stretching wide. Patrick loved them. In fact, they were the best part of the planet to him.
Soon, they came into the mine encampment. There were a few dozen structures built near the mine entrance, some for work, but mostly these were houses. Divya motioned for Patrick to stop. She went into one of the buildings and came out with boxes of what he thought were first aid and other medical supplies. She stored them in the trailer. They called out for people, knocking on all the doors in the mine settlement, but found none. The entire area had flown to the farm after the explosion.
"It's a good time to put on the suits," she said. She and Patrick pulled on the bulky and hot outfit. It was a space suit, not a radiation suit, but it was all they had available and would do the trick. The Geiger counter was starting to tick up as they had approached the mine.
Back in the ORV they sped off and soon crossed a river where the base of the enormous lake narrowed. The river would go south for a thousands kilometers to the sea. It was possible there were even boats somewhere south, Patrick thought.
They were getting close now and the radiation was rising. It hadn't reached dangerous levels yet, at least for minimal exposure, but the people out here would have been exposed awhile. They were likely going to get sick at least.
Patrick saw something ahead and almost choked. The ORV was there. The people were not, and two enormous monsters stood nearby, pushing on the vehicle with spears. As their vehicle came close they turned toward him. He suddenly saw why they called them centaurs. Reared up with a spear pointed towards him, they did appear a bit like the mythical half-man, half-horse beast, but far, far scarier.
"Holy shit," Divya gasped. "Turn around Patrick! Turn around!"
Patrick didn't turn around. He parked the ORV and jumped out, grabbing the repulsor. He knew it worked on the beasts. He charged it to full power as they turned toward him. They charged in unison, one of them launching a spear. Patrick jumped to the side and rolled. He wasn't graceful, but he managed to get upright and pull the trigger on the repulsor before the other skewered him.
Ultrasonic waves pulsed from the weapon toward the attackers and they tumbled in a mass near his feet, their momentum carrying them into him. He was knocked backwards by their hard shells and slammed to the ground, but he was ok. The centaurs were unconscious.
Patrick knew it was against the colony rules to kill the beasts, but things were desperate. He couldn't leave them here only to kill him and Divya. He grabbed a spear and plunged them into their heads several times. Instead of casting the spears away, he took them both and put them in the ORV.
When he returned to the ORV, Divya looked at him with horror and awe. "That was incredible, Patrick. Thank you."

*evil Cackle* I am an Enabler
It's honestly kinda cheesy, but SI-OC have always been and will always be my fave type of fanfics. Like don't get me wrong I love other styles of fics as well, but the SI-OC tends to really capture the world and the characters in a way that exemplifies a reader's viewpoint. You kinda feel like you're reading the story/show/etc all over again with a new perspective.
Your OC's are all so interesting and nuanced, even with their similar circumstances they don't feel like copies of each other. It doesn't feel like a re-telling of the same story with a couple new characters, their actions have consequences that make sense and it's just *amazing*. The side character have their motivations and their lives don't revolve around the OC. Not to mention the OC isn't shoehorned into every plot point, the ones they're in feel natural and twists always have great foreshadowing and buildup.
Your consistent quality and the way you take cliche tropes and make them wholly your own just keeps me coming back for more.
btw: yea I am the person who read every one of your fics despite not knowing half the fandoms they're in. NGL P&A is the reason I started watching Naruto and by extension anime as a whole.
Tumblr media
I feel the exact same way about SI-OCs!!!!!!!!!!! It was always about the outsider’s viewpoint of the characters and exploring another perspective of canon and plot.
And tysm, I know that SI-OC can be considered as cringe but I genuinely wanted to insert enjoyable but relatable characters in my viewpoint that readers would feel like they’d get along with and support. It’s why I also like ORV so much bc I feel like kdj represents us readers for whatever story/fiction/world we read and love.
Tumblr media
again, thanks anon for reading. It really means a lot to me, so I try my best to write bc it’s fun for me and it makes me happy that ppl like you read it too. I love good cliches, so thank you for that and also, wow thank you for reading even though you didn’t know the fandoms…. that seriously makes my heart cry.

I guess I will always be a sucker for insanely codependent trios that consist of a dark haired guy who hides all his trauma and pain behind a smile that may or may not be false, a quiet guy with mysteries abounding in his past, and a gal who looks like she'll be discarded by the narrative but turns out to be foundational for the stories of the plot and the other two characters. Bonus if they remain platonic through the entire story

yjh likes tearing kdj's clothes off. kdj isn't a fan. text version of my twitter post
.
Joonghyuk, in all his Neanderthal glory, had a thing for literally tearing clothes off. Dokja wouldn't mind so much if they were his own clothes— the bastard had one too many black turtlenecks anyway— but unfortunately for Dokja's wardrobe, the main victim of Joonghyuk's impeccable caveman imitation was Kim Dokja himself.
"Oh, fuck," Dokja would gasp, clawing at Joonghyuk's shoulders as he ground his knee between Dokja's legs, and plink plonk would go his shirt buttons on the floor, sacrificed to summon the beast with two backs. Or Dokja would arch his body against Joonghyuk's after a particularly intense kiss, and rrrrip would go the t-shirt Yoosung had bought him for his birthday the year before. He had even lost a pair or two of slacks to Joonghyuk's terrible hands, although the amount of force required to actually tear his slacks off inevitably made Dokja horny instead of angry, and then it was too late to make a fuss about it afterwards.
But not this time. This time Dokja would not be put off.
"Joonghyuk-ah," said Dokja, attempting to wriggle his way out from the trap of Joonghyuk's thighs (to his later chagrin, he had to admit he wasn't actually trying very hard. They were very nice thighs). "We need to talk."
Joonghyuk, whose fingers were already sliding up Dokja's shirt, only grunted in acknowledgement. Dokja opened his mouth to initiate the Talk but found himself summarily kissed into dazed silence.
No, he thought frantically, pulling himself together some moments later, no, this is a Charvet shirt, I can't let him ruin it—
"Do you know how much this shirt costs," Dokja groaned. Joonghyuk thumbed at his nipple and did not answer him. He did, however, suck a bruise into Dokja's neck, like a vampire. And his free hand, like a caveman, gripped the front of Dokja's shirt. "The buttons, Yoo Joonghyuk."
"They take too long," Joonghyuk answered, at last, and pulled. There was a minute pause, just long enough for Dokja to really appreciate the sound of his mother-of-pearl buttons scattering across the floor. His shirt lay open at his sides, pitiful and torn. Dokja closed his eyes in pain.
"I am," he began, breath hitching when Joonghyuk bent to continue his vampiric hobby on Dokja's bare chest, "I am upset, Joonghyuk-ah. I am very upset. This is upsetting."
Joonghyuk sat back up, licking his lips. His mouth was red, and Dokja couldn’t look away.
"Buy you a new one," said Joonghyuk.
"It's 900 thousand won."
Joonghyuk had an impressive poker face, but Dokja was too familiar with him to miss the twitch of his eyelid. "Why are you wasting money on shirts," Joonghyuk said petulantly, and bit at his chest again. When Dokja inhaled as if to continue the argument, Joonghyuk stuck his hand down Dokja's pants, and then Dokja forgot what he was going to say.
Oh, Dokja knew what was happening. Joonghyuk was an unemployed bastard who couldn't afford Dokja's shirts, and now he was trying to use sex as a distraction.
Well— (Joonghyuk slid further down and put his mouth to good use) well— (Dokja's fingers tangled in Joonghyuk's hair, moaning)
Well, Dokja was successfully distracted.

the thing about ORV is that it's just pure, unadulterated Character Dynamics. I mean don't get me wrong there's lots of plot and stuff happening too but more of a constant dull roar of plot buoyed up by just the most insane complex tangle of character dynamics ever evinced by a single piece of fiction. i mean there's also Themes but those take a lot longer to really kick in.

Next from our lineup of writers to introduce is Sona!

An introductory profile image. The texts read:
Sona, writer (social media links).
Intro: It’s me, Sona! I’ve been in ORV fandom for three brutal, brutal years and by god, Sing Shong won’t let me leave. I love writing gen and woman-centered fic because this novel truly has the characters of all time.
Favorite quote: “Release my companions.”
[They are just the means to an end that served their purpose. What meaning is there for you if I released them?]
“...They are my everything.” Chapter 506.
Writing:“Are you feeling better, oppa?”
Yoo Joonghyuk didn’t know how he wanted to answer that. If he said no, he’d be admitting weakness and it would make Mia sad. If he said yes, he’d be admitting he was feeling sad in the first place, which was ridiculous. He was fine.
He watched her in silence, jaw working. She stared back.
“Oppa, please be honest with me.”
Another moment of silence, and then,
“...Yes. I am. You don’t have to worry about me.”
Mia smirked. “Who’s worrying about you? I just wanted to see if you’d stop brooding for five seconds and answer me like a real person.”
He tousled her hair hard enough for her to start screeching in outrage. “Brat.”
“Aaaah, oppa! You ruined my hair! Ugh, look, it’s all tangled now, you jerk. You’re such a giant asshole sometimes, oh my god.”

my body slaughterhouse
In the quiet moments in-between everything, Yoo Joonghyuk looks to Kim Dokja. Or: Yoo Joonghyuk just wants to care for Kim Dokja if only he'd stay still for a goddamn second.
joongdok, 2.7k; an orv fic about gentleness.
also on ao3, with author’s notes if you want to read that sort of thing.
. . .
Yoo Joonghyuk is not used to being soft. His hands are made for breaking things, not saving them; he has never been able to save anyone, including himself. The lives he’s lived, going back to that fateful day the world ended, have made him cold and cruel. There is a distance between him and the rest of the world that no one can cross.
He walks this world alone. He knows better than to expect anyone to keep up with him.
He knows better than to get attached.
But Kim Dokja, impossible and unpredictable, forced his way into Yoo Joonghyuk’s life and declared them companions. And suddenly Yoo Joonghyuk is not the one walking ahead of everyone else, alone; now, he chases after Kim Dokja, time after time, reaching for him, always a step behind.
Kim Dokja is here, in this regression, and that is all that matters.
It’s quiet, tonight. There is no terrible tragedy hanging over their heads, or an enemy lying in wait for them. Tonight, they can rest.
Compared to his past regressions, everyone is lighter. They are not the same as they were before, at the beginning. No one is. But that heaviness they carried, that burden that slowly dragged them down, it’s not here.
Shin Yoosung smiles as she talks to Kim Dokja. Lee Gilyoung is relaxed on the ground, leaning back against Kim Dokja. They’re just kids, thrown headfirst into the scenarios, and Kim Dokja saved them, like he saved everyone else here. It’s no wonder they’re so attached.
Yoo Joonghyuk is too, even if he can’t bring himself to say it.
The others chat quietly in between eating. Something warms in Yoo Joonghyuk’s chest as he watches everyone enjoy his cooking. Kim Dokja too was taking time to savor his food. He was glad; he had put the best pieces on Kim Dokja’s plate.
It’s hard showing care, when he’s so used to everyone he cares for dying. It’s hard to show care when he’s the only one left in the end, and nothing he does can save them.
Kim Dokja meets his eyes; Yoo Joonghyuk had been staring for too long.
-Do you have something to say?  he asks through Midday Tryst.
-No. Go back to eating.
Kim Dokja doesn’t look like he believes him, but that doesn’t surprise him. Out of everyone, Kim Dokja knows Yoo Joonghyuk best. It still stuns him, the lengths he’ll go to ensure Yoo Joonghyuk survives.
It’s not just the world Kim Dokja intends to save, but Yoo Joonghyuk also.
So used to being to one in control, leading others and taking charge in the scenarios, it’s strange to be on the other side of that. To follow after someone else, to have faith in them to get through anything. To be willing to die to see their goals come to being.
Kim Dokja is the only one Yoo Joonghyuk would feel this way for. No one else compares.
Under his gaze, Kim Dokja flushes and ducks his head. He urges the kids to eat and does not look at Yoo Joonghyuk again.
That’s fine. Yoo Joonghyuk is satisfied with keeping Kim Dokja fed. It’s the least he can do for someone who died for him time and time again.
“Why aren’t you sleeping,” Yoo Joonghyuk says. It’s more an accusation than a question, and perhaps that’s what makes Kim Dokja glare at him. Yoo Joonghyuk glances down at the phone Kim Dokja was so focused on, looks at its blank screen, and irritation quickly fills him.
“I wasn’t aware I had a bedtime,” Kim Dokja says, staring up at him defiantly. The circles under his eyes are dark, and will likely get even darker. For someone who always saves him, he doesn’t care for himself at all. It irks Yoo Joonghyuk.
“How do you expect to fight well if you’re too tired to function?”
“I’ll be just fine. It’s not like I need a lot of sleep in the first place.”
Yoo Joonghyuk is familiar with the urge to punch him, but it’s particularly strong at that moment. “Don’t be stupid,” he growls instead, “You’re no good to anyone when you’re exhausted. Go to sleep.”
Kim Dokja rolls his eyes. “Honestly, Yoo Joonghyuk, you’re worried over nothing. I’ve gone without sleep before, I can do it again.”
That such an infuriating man could give hope to so many others baffles him. That such an infuriating man is someone Yoo Joonghyuk is willing to die for is even more ridiculous. But this stubbornness is exactly why they’re all here today. He’s not as mad as he wants to be; he never is when it comes to Kim Dokja.
“Come,” he says, grabbing Kim Dokja’s arm, “I will make sure you sleep.”
“Yoo Joonghyuk!” He tries to pull away, but all that does is make Yoo Joonghyuk tighten his grip. “This is ridiculous! Let me go!”
He doesn’t bother answering. Instead, he drags Kim Dokja to his room and all but throws him on the bed. Kim Dokja sits up and stares at him.
“What has gotten into you lately?”
Yoo Joonghyuk considers. He wants to take care of Kim Dokja. Repay him for everything he’s doing for him, for all of them. He wants Kim Dokja to care a little more about himself, but until then, Yoo Joonghyuk is content with doing it for him. He wants to be gentle to the man who saved him, reminded him of the value of life, gave him a reason to continue on. He wants to hold Kim Dokja close so that he doesn’t die again, wants to protect him because one of these days his death will be permanent and that is the one thing Yoo Joonghyuk absolutely cannot survive.
He doesn’t know how to say all this. It gets caught in his throat, his chest. So he says nothing.
“Yoo Joonghyuk?”
Kim Dokja looks confused. Lost. There’s red in his cheeks and a tremble in his hands. It makes Yoo Joonghyuk’s heart ache.
He walks to the bed and guides Kim Dokja away from the edge. Kim Dokja lets him, watching his movement with wide eyes.
Yoo Joonghyuk climbs onto the bed, sits against the headboard, and pulls Kim Dokja to rest against his side.
“Yoo Joonghyuk?” he asks again, voice quieter, softer. Pressed against his side, with Yoo Joonghyuk’s arm around his shoulders, Kim Dokja feels vulnerable. Soft, like he might break at any moment.
Everything he feels tangles into a knot in his throat. What he wants to say won’t come out. Instead, he says, “I will stay and make sure you sleep.”
Kim Dokja stares at him for a long moment, then slowly, tentatively, relaxes against him. It feels like a testing of waters, a careful surrender.
It’s something Yoo Joonghyuk has noticed bust hasn’t given much thought. Kim Dokja doesn’t touch others easily. If he does, it’s quick and easy to miss. A hand on a shoulder, a pat on the back, here for a moment then gone in the next. He keeps a physical distance between others, save for the kids, and Yoo Joonghyuk has to wonder, has anyone really touched Kim Dokja? Held him as Yoo Joonghyuk does now, let him know the warmth of others, how grounding the weight of another can be?
This is not a question he will ever have answers to. But he does know that he is holding Kim Dokja, can feel the weight of him on his chest, not an unpleasant weight but a comforting one.
Kim Dokja turns his face into Yoo Joonghyuk’s chest. When he speaks, his voice is muffled. “If you plan to sleep here, then don’t sleep sitting up. I don’t want to hear you complaining about a sore neck tomorrow.”
He doesn’t know how much time passes, but Kim Dokja falls asleep, relaxing completely as his breath evens out. In sleep, his face is much softer. He looks younger when he’s not planning how to save everyone but himself.
The sight brings back that ache in his chest, which hurts in the most pleasant ways. How lucky he is, to have Kim Dokja in this regression. As long as he’s here, Yoo Joonghyuk will continue on.
Lee Jihye is brighter in this regression. She laughs more easily and is quick to tease others. It makes him wonder what she was like before the scenarios, before she killed her best friend and walked out of that school as its only survivor. It’s hard to remember that there was a before that haunts everyone here, when it’s all Yoo Joonghyuk has known for years.
She’s not as strong as she was before, but that’s alright. There are others that will help her when she needs it. All Yoo Joonghyuk has to do for her in this scenario is teach her how to fight; Kim Dokja will teach her how to live despite everything.
In this regression, Lee Jihye is still a teenage girl before she is a maritime general. There are still days she wakes up in tears, gasping her dead friend’s name, and withdraws into herself for a few hours. In past regressions, this has made her fight harder, more recklessly, uncaring of her own safety. Now, Kim Dokja watches over her carefully, speaks to her in low tones, and sends Jung Heewon to comfort her.
Yoo Joonghyuk wonders how things could have changed if he reached out a little more. Had he been less focused on clearing the scenarios and more focused on helping those around him, could they have survived?
He knows the answer, and it leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. He tries not to think about it.
Lee Jihye grins when she sees him walk into the clearing they’ve claimed for training. For a moment, as she sits on the ground holding her sword, Yoo Joonghyuk sees her dead and bloodied. Then she stands and says, brightly, “Master! What are we doing today?”
Yoo Joonghyuk takes a moment to focus on the present, then says, “Start with warm ups, then do your katas fifty times. Then I’ll show you how to disarm someone without getting too close to them.”
Lee Jihye beams and gets to work. Yoo Joonghyuk observes her for a moment; she’s steadily improving, but she could be stronger. They could always be stronger, because they were are enough.
(The memory takes over: Yoo Joonghyuk, not fast enough, not strong enough, not clever enough to outwit Kim Dokja. Yoo Joonghyuk, holding Kim Dojka’s dying body, helplessly watching as he turns to dust, ejected from the Star Stream, unable to save him yet again.)
Yoo Joonghyuk makes his way to the other side of the clearing and unsheathes his sword. He, too, needs to be stronger. Strong enough to take on the constellations. Strong enough to save Kim Dokja from himself.
He trains for a few hours, teaches Lee Jihye new attacks, spars with her to let her practice. She’s the only one he found this regression; the others all gravitate around Kim Dokja. He only needs to look out of her and Mia in this regression.
Even so, Lee Jihye, like the others, turns to Kim Dokja as well. Despite how often she teases him and insists she doesn’t care for him, she is deeply affected by his deaths just as the kids are.
They stop for lunch, and Yoo Joonghyuk leaves Lee Jihye to her own devices as he considers the hidden scenarios he could go after in this area.
“Yoo Joonghyuk, come here,” Kim Dokja calls from where he waits by the door. “Are you going after the hidden items?”
He makes his way to Kim Dokja, already wary at the calculating gleam in his eyes. “I am,” he answers.
“Great! Let’s go then.”
“I don’t need you to come with me.”
“I wasn’t planning on giving you a choice.” Kim Dokja smiles, and it makes Yoo Joonghyuk want to both shove him away and pull him closer. He keeps his hands carefully still by his sides.
“I can get these on my own,” he says, knowing that would never be enough to convince Kim Dokja to let him leave alone.
“That’s not going to stop me.”
He leaves first, without looking back to see if Yoo Joonghyuk is following; he is, of course. He’s always following after Kim Dokja.
And because this is Kim Dokja, he can't go two minutes without trying to cause problems. “I’ll be getting my share of the items too, of course. Don’t expect me to guide you without expecting payment.” He smirks at Yoo Joonghyuk, waiting for him to respond.
He grabs Kim Dokja’s arm. “Pull your weight and do some of the work and I’ll let you have some.”
“Ah, always so violent, Joonghyuk-ah, can’t you have one conversation without threatening the other party?” He tries to break free of Yoo Joonghyuk’s grip, but now that he’s got Kim Dokja close, he has no reason to let go.
“What part of this is threatening?”
Kim Dokja gestures to his captured arm. “Do you not have working eyes? Most conversations don’t require such brute strength.” Yoo Joonghyuk wants to laugh at that. When has Kim Dokja ever had a normal conversation? He’s either planning something that will piss off the constellations, or antagonizing everyone around him. He avoids normal conversations as much as he can, as though speaking genuinely to someone for the sake of speaking to them will make him break out in hives.
“You can let go,” Kim Dokja tries, still trying to pull away.
Yoo Joonghyuk doesn’t bother to reply to that. He leads the way to the first hidden scenario in the area as Kim Dokja continues to struggle, then abruptly goes still, allowing the hold on his arm.
Another thing that Kim Dokja avoids: touch. Yoo Joonghyuk wants to keep him close, hold him at every opportunity, but Kim Dokja is quick to keep his distance and disappear. Even Yoo Joonghyuk has never been to physically isolated from others in past regressions. Kim Dokja seems touch starved, and that makes Yoo Joonghyuk want to touch him even more.
He slides his hand down from Kim Dokja’s arm to his wrist, and allows himself a small smile with Kim Dokja doesn’t try to pull away.
“What are you doing out here?”
Kim Dokja’s voice is the first thing in a few hours to break the silence on the roof. Yoo Joonghyuk sits near the edge, looking out over the broken world. Everyone had been hit hard by the last scenario, and he had to escape and be alone before he drowned in his own thoughts.
It takes a long moment before he finds his voice. “I wanted some time to myself,” he answers.
Kim Dokja hums and doesn’t leave. He sits behind Yoo Joonghyuk, barely any distance between them.
“Are you thinking about everything that went wrong? Comparing this to your past regressions?”
Like always, Kim Dokja knows exactly what he’s thinking. It’s a relief that he doesn’t have to explain it when Kim Dokja already knows.
“You shouldn’t focus on what went wrong. There are too many things to go over. You should focus on the fact that we’re all still alive, and we made it through another scenario.” His voice isn’t pitying or overly gentle. Kim Dokja speaks as though this is obvious, and Yoo Joonghyuk feels some of the tension in his shoulders lighten.
“Have you already begun planning for the next scenario?”
“Of course. But we’ll go over that tomorrow, after everyone’s had some time to rest.”
There is nothing more to say for the night. Yoo Joonghyuk focuses on the sound of Kim Dokja’s breathing, and leans back just enough that their shoulders touch. It feels like a hard-won victory when Kim Dokja doesn’t startle or shy away. Instead, he leans back against Yoo Joonghyuk, pressing their backs together. A weight drops onto his shoulder; Kim Dokja’s head, tilted back so he can look up at the steadily darkening sky.
They stay until the sun sets completely.  It’s the first time he’s felt so at peace since the scenarios started.
That’s the first night Kim Dokja follows Yoo Joonghyuk to his tent and settles in besides him. He refuses to meet Yoo Joonghyuk’s eyes, tense and nervous as though he wasn’t sure he was welcome.
Yoo Joonghyuk reaches out for him.
   Kim Dokja reaches back.
