Supporting Actress: Simply Da’Vine
Tumblr media
The nominees are:
Emily Blunt, Oppenheimer
Danielle Brooks, The Color Purple
America Ferrera, Barbie
Jodie Foster, Nyad
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
If there’s one category that’s been locked up since award season began, it’s Best Supporting Actress. Da’Vine Joy Randolph has swept the major awards, including some of the critics’ prizes that tend to go against the mainstream.
There’s no real second choice here. Emily Blunt may have an outside chance if Oppenheimer overperforms in voting across categories. America Ferrera’s nomination is cause for celebration, but there’s not enough in it to really challenge for the prize.
Danielle Brooks secures the only nomination for The Color Purple. It’s a deserving performance, but the film hasn’t made enough in-roads with voters this award season. Jodie Foster is great in Nyad, though I wonder if her legendary status in the industry is why she earned this spot over other like Julianne Moore in May December, Rosamund Pike in Saltburn, or Penelope Cruz in Ferrari.
Who will win: Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
But look out for: Emily Blunt, Oppenheimer
Who I’d vote for: Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
If I could add one more: Juliane Moore, May December

2024 Oscar Picks
2023 was a great year for cinema. So many stellar movies across so many genres. Had a hard time picking a favorite this year. I will say this, though. Oppenheimer is not my favorite film from last year. GASP! I know, but The Holdovers, Poor Things, Barbie, Anatomy of a Fall, and all things Lily Gladstone resonated more with me than Christopher Nolan’s epic. It is great, but aside from one…

Supporting Actor: Hollywood Loves a Comeback
Tumblr media
The nominees are
Sterling K. Brown — American Fiction
Robert De Niro — Killers of the Flower Moon
Robert Downey, Jr. — Oppenheimer
Ryan Gosling — Barbie
Mark Ruffalo — Poor Things
Similar to Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s hold on the Best Supporting Actress category, RDJ has had Best Supporting Actor locked up — perhaps even since last July when Oppenheimer came out. The only major blemishes on his record are the National Board of Review (who chose Ruffalo) and the National Society of Film Critics (he tied for second with Gosling, both losing to Charles Melton in May December).
Gosling may be most likely to threaten for the prize, but I think it’s such a distant second it may not even be worth discussing. Brown, De Niro, and Ruffalo all give strong performances (especially Ruffalo) but this contest is done. Even though I like all the nominees, I still somehow wish there was room for others like Melton, Ruffalo’s co-star Willem Dafoe, or Dominic Sessa in The Holdovers.
Who will win: Robert Downey, Jr. — Oppenheimer
But look out for: Ryan Gosling — Barbie
Who I’d vote for: Robert Downey, Jr. — Oppenheimer
If I could add one more: Dominic Sessa — The Holdovers

Oscar Picks 2023
What a year at the movies. While I’m bummed The Woman King, The Northman, and She Said didn’t get more Oscar love this year, Sarah Polley missing out on a director nod, and Lashana Lynch and Viola Davis should be represented in the acting categories, I’m impressed by the films that are represented. The sound and visual effects awards will likely go to Avatar: The Way of Water or Top Gun:…

Anthology Of The Killer got the Nuovo Award at this year's IGF! I'm very pleased and tickled. I wasn't able to attend but here is the little prerecorded acceptance speech I made. Thank you again to everyone supporting the games and especially to those at GDC this year who were kind enough to cheer it on haha
