This Fan Went to the Inaugural Ball, Washington, DC, 1861! See it in now, in-person, at our new exhibition!

This fan belonged to Mrs. James Sheridan of 119th Street and Lennox Avenue, New York City. She attended the Inaugural Ball held for Abraham Lincoln in Washington, D.C., March 4, 1861, and she had this fan with her. Her son, Douglas Sheridan, married Mary Adelaide deNoyelles of Haverstraw. The fan was passed down through the family before being given to the Historical Society of Rockland County.

Today, several Inaugural balls may be held around the capital on Inauguration Day, but in 1861, only one was held. A large, temporary hall was built specifically for the ball.

This object, like many of the historic objects posted here, comes from the HSRC collection.
