you could read about quantum mechanics all your life and become ever less convinced that you understand anything about it at all, i'm losing my mind over bohmian interpretation vs copenhagen interpretation, i can't believe bohmian mechanics has been dismissed over historical reasons and how differently we approach classical mechanics, with CM you do remark that we have different interpretations (i.e mathematical FORMALISMS) for describing classical non relativistic systems but for Quantum Mechanics our education makes us assume that wave functions are somewhat obscure yet physical objects that describe something in reality which is instrisically á la Copenhagen, and honestly the Copenhagen circle bullied anyone who dared to say otherwise, why bully those who disagree with you yet make a point? That's entirelly un-scientific. It makes no sense that we still tend to teach newtonian mechanics bc it aligns w common sense since it can easily be thought of as occuring on " real space" even though its mathematical formalism is nowadays subpar to that of hamiltonian anad lagrangian mechanics, yet we can't even mention bohmian mechanics bc it's not the orthodox interpretation when it also provides a formulation that occurs in "real space" and it would make sense to teach it as a first approach and then continue with whatever other (more obscure) interpretations come in handy; nobody can deny the mathematical superiority of the Copenhagen interpretation just as nobody can deny that newtonian formalism is a pain in the ass and becomes complicated over very trivial stuff such as a change in coordinate systems. A first approach to the quantum world from a nearly classical perspective would accomodate better with how we're thaught classical mechanics and would possibly help clarify that formalisms are not exactly sacred and there are many ways to interpret mathematical tools that are abstractions and not physical objects per se. Why is it that newtonian 'classical' mechanics is considered complex enough to deserve being revised over and over with increasingly complex mathematical formalisms, starting with a more common sense drive approach even when we could simply get to the hamiltonian interpretation and avoid a lot of tedious calculations but quantum mechanics with its mystical-looking effects is not regarded in the same way. I'm tired of 'historical reasons' if you'll condition people to approach stuff a certain way then at least be coherent with you approach.

The Reality of Divinatory Addiction

I have been thinking a lot about the use of divinatory practices by aspiring magic practitioners. In particular the use of the tarot by young witches as a kind of measuring stick by which to live and love.

The history of divination as practiced by magicians goes back to the early stages of magic itself. "What does the future hold?" is a question that was asked by people as soon as those words were formed in the mouths of mankind.

Over the millennia the practice of divination has been born in the main out of various implements available to the practitioner. The casting of bones, the marks of smoke on the stones, the pattern of tea leaves in the bottom of an empty cup - these mundane elements come over time and use to have certain predisposed ideas attached to them, portents of a future to come and a past that haunts us.

With the invention of language and visual art mankind was able to create more specifically coded templates on which to predict the future. The use of magic bowls inscribed with the words of a spell was common for centuries before the common era.

Eventually by the middle ages mankind's use of various games of chance were drawn into the practice of divination. Dice and cards being conscribed to more than lingering entertainment, they were re-envisioned with symbols more complex than their simple base 13 numbering system. Given over to a kind of complex sigilization tarot cards and their cousins were born.

Many authors have written countless words about the history of tarot, and a few have looked more deeply at its mechanistic framework. But the use of these tools holds potential dangers to the user that are seldom discussed.

I have long held the Romani belief that you can not buy your future, and so at the age of 13 I acquired my first and still primary tarot deck, a 1970s printing of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, from a shopping mall chain bookshop by means less than legal.

I still use that deck as my primary tarot deck to this day and what I have been thinking about is how the use of tarot has exploded with this current crop of occult revival.

More young witches and wizards have turned to tarot than in any previous generation, at levels reminiscent of my generation's use of the ouija board (a form of "spirit communication" created whole-cloth by a game company designer).

Within this new crop of divinators there is a pronounced use of the tarot by means that have nothing to do with their traditional use. The practices of the majority of contemporary tarot users seem to have drifted far afield from those intended by the creators of the decks that they are using.

Having clearly decided to ignore the written manual, contemporary users seem to reply on a kind of poker-based single card draw for "yes or no" questions about mundane topics. As well there are now a generation of "tarot experts" willing to make everything they know up in order to charge you for something they can not provide.

But a sucker is born every minute and my real concern is not those who would pay a person for their future, but those real practitioners who would look continually to their future for guidance to the point of ignoring their own part in the process of that future.

What I have noticed is that young tarot users seem to ask the tarot dozens of questions a day. "Am I going to have a good day?", "Will this carrot cake come out well?", "Does the person I like, like me back?", "Should I wear these shoes with that coat?" - the triviality of seeking guidance of tasks so mundane is an insult to the very nature of divination.

When we divine, acting as probes for futures that have yet to come, we reach out into the field of unknowing to act as cartographers of an undefined reality. We separate ourselves from linear time, and seek to know potentialities that are, from our own perspective of time, still merely quantum.

In many forms of divination we seek that change of perspective through a spirit intermediary, and to ask a spirit to tell us "ifs and whats" about mundane life is petty and insulting.

This 20 questions version of tarot cards makes the reasons for the shift to "single card draw" "yes or no" tarot obvious. It would take these practitioners too much time to actually do the tarot, laying out the cards in order to foresee a pattern in the future, for 20 questions a day. So the tarot becomes reduced to a magic 8 ball toy. "Does he like me? YES or NO"

The root of this need to ask the tarot for countless guidance is manifested in the uncertainty many people feel when looking at the mundane world around them. Lacking guidance on how to navigate the failing system of capitalism they turn to other means to suss out what is coming around the corner.

Lest we mistake the map for the territory it behoves would be divinators to seek not often the guidance of such council. Rarity is of utmost importance in any act of magic, no less the many forms of divination. To sully the cards with one's mundane matters is to ask a mystic to polish one's shoes.

More importantly we must be aware that like gambling any form of habit that pushes our emotional buttons can become addictive, no less tarot cards. For those psychologically predisposed to addiction through the shape of their personal mental landscapes tarot can become an emotional roller coaster based on the draw of the cards, even if one does them the correct way. Reliance on their promise of answers can be as addictive as gambling or drug use.

In all realms of the occult it is the rarity of the ritual practice that creates importance to us in our mind. The sacredness of it, the singularity of it, is what gives it its power and allows us to access a range of existence not mundanely available to us.

Beware the use of tarot or any form of divination for answers to questions we as magicians should otherwise be able to rationally determine. Do not ask them to make mundane decisions for you, and always keep them at enough of a distance so that they are not sullied by the world of mundane things.

Safe divinatory practices need to be discussed more among both established and fledgling practitioners of all ilks. Don't let divination become an emotional and mental crutch on which you rely, use it sparingly to ask only the real questions about those things that matter beyond the veil.

Dark Cybertron Chapter 3: This One’s All About Skywarp. Honest!

It’s a beautiful day during Cybertron’s apocalypse, and Starscream is talking to a corpse to work through his emotions. He goes through a very brief rundown of what happened last issue, I guess because Swerve’s too busy being in space to do the Story So Far, and caps it off with an apology to Metalhawk over killing him. Rattrap watches this go down in the background, because this is Skywarp’s toy tie-in issue.

After this very incriminating conversation, Starscream goes out to see to the massive crowd standing outside, including Scoops’ little Targetmaster buddies.

I don’t care for that man’s beard.

Starscream promises to go talk to the Titan, though he really doesn’t want to, and Rattrap catches up to him to touch base. The two of them go to see Megatron, who’s still trapped in the forcefield hamster ball Wheeljack stuffed inside his chest back in RID. Starscream teases Rattrap about trying to be conniving, comparing it to his own endeavors as the Decepticon SIC, and offers a bit of advice.

Implying that Starscream hasn’t been flying by the seat of his proverbial pants since he became a main character in Phase Two.

Starscream, having met his daily quota of rubbing his success in Megatron’s face, goes off to see what he can do about this Titan situation.

Over at the Titan itself, the Autobots and Decepticons are duking it out, with the man of the hour gracing us with his presence.

Outstanding, you funky little robot.

Arcee tries a little banter, but it falls flat, and instead she just decides to sword fight a cat. Bumblebee asks Soundwave just what the hell he thinks he’s doing, and Soundwave gives a complete non-answer in the form of Decepticon propaganda, because anything else would make things too easy. This is where Starscream shows up and has his little chat with the Titan.

Back over in prison, Rattrap’s getting the skinny on the dark prophecy Scoop introduced into the narrative last issue. Rattrap wants to know just how this information got passed around so well outside of jail, and Scoop suggests that there are people who perhaps have a vetted interest in what may or may not be happening with Starscream. Then Rattrap makes it weird by A) not being terribly concerned about the potential end of the world and B) being impressed by the idea that Starscream somehow planned said end of the world.

This Skywarp issue is really good.

Over with the Lost Light, Ultra Magnus has taken command, and the lads are about to make the quantum jump to chase after Jhiaxus. But wait! Something’s off! The ship’s moving in a way that it shouldn’t be! Very odd, that. Brainstorm calls with answers, asking Magnus to grab Getaway, for some friggin’ reason, and head down to the shuttle bay.

Getaway asks Magnus how it feels to be big man on campus, and Magnus seems to think it’s a bit overrated.

Wow, someone needs to go talk to Xaaron about maybe thinking through his debate topics before he posts them, so he doesn’t get pegged as a space racist. The Universal Killswitch happened, like, last week, my dude.

The two of them get to the shuttle bay to discover that Metroplex’s thumb- which they picked up back in Spotlight: Trailcutter- is floating, and more or less pushing the Lost Light off-course. Getaway is pretty jazzed to see this thing on the ship, sort of missing the bigger picture. Brainstorm hypothesizes that Metroplex is using his severed thumb to guide the Lost Light to him.

Not sure why Getaway needed to be here for this.

Back on Cybertron, Everyone watches as Starscream flies up to the Titan. Arcee is ready to blast him out of the sky with a gun as big as she is, but Bumblebee wants to see where this goes. This pisses Prowl the hell off, and he starts yelling, but Bumblebee tells him to shut up. Bumblebee tells a lot of people to shut up in “Dark Cybertron”.

So we’ve got a team-up going on between the Autobots and the Decepticons- Bumblebee says it isn’t, but it pretty much is. Soundwave and Prowl get into a bit of a scuff, as Starscream lands and asks the Titan to chat.

Yeah, that doesn’t really work out too well.

Starscream manages to escape the Titan death blast in his alt, as the poor bastards on the ground below begin to dissolve into black fizz.

But Skywarp’s okay, so it can’t be all bad!

Yeeeeah, Skywarp.

Prowl starts yelling at Bumblebee again, as if he can’t see that the friggin’ death wave the Titan shot out of its face is still heading for Iacon, Starscream just barely managing to stay ahead of it. He lands as it hits, screaming about how Cybertron is his and he’s not gonna let some murder energy to steal his thunder, bracing his arms out as if that’ll do anything. Everyone watching him do this has about the expression you’d expect from witnessing such madness.

As the Iaconian populace gets dusted, someone else wakes up from the dead. It’s Metalhawk, and it’s time for him to become a tool of the narrative.

Metalhawk launches into the air and lands on top of Starscream, interrupting his personal diatribe to gripe about how he killed him. Still, there are bigger fish to fry, as he kicks Starscream through a wall and walks into the room where they keep Megatron.

Metalhawk releases Megatron from his hamster ball prison and carries him away, despite Starscream maybe insinuating that Megatron is dead somehow? It’s not super clear. Anyway, Metalhawk must do some pretty intense arm exercises, because he carries Megatron out and shoots into the air, holding him one-handed to his side.

Eat your veggies, kids, and you too can kidnap an entire warlord.

As the city falls apart, Rattrap and Scoop enter the scene, the prison likely having collapsed in the aftershocks of the death wave. Good thing they’re giant robots who can’t be killed by mere crushing damage. Rattrap tries to connive, but Scoop is more concerned with the fact that many people are dying, because he’s a somewhat decent person. Some of these people have begun to turn on Starscream, who takes it about as well be you’d expect.

Back on the Lost Light, the lads have decided to go find Metroplex, and to hell with bringing Jhiaxus to justice. At least for now. Of course, Ratchet tries to argue that they should do what Orion wanted them to do, but Orion isn’t here right now, is he? And Orion isn’t the space pope at this present time, now is he? So yeah. Metroplex time. They quantum jump, ending up underwater, with said water swarming with robots. That might be an issue, especially since they don’t seem to be terribly friendly.

Back in the Crystal City with Shockwave, Metalhawk’s dropped off the package, and Shockwave reminds us that he installed a space bridge in Megatron’s torso. Scientists sure do like to shove random bullshit into Megatron’s torso.

Hey.

Let’s talk about the NAILs for a second.

This is Tappet. I’ve been calling him Hat Guy up until this point, but his name is Tappet.

Everything Tappet done in the last 20+ issues of RID can be explained without him being the subject of the sentence:

The Decepticons kicked Tappet’s ass. Prowl sent Tappet to prison. Metalhawk bailed Tappet out of prison. Metalhawk brought Sky-Byte to the trashcan fire to talk to Tappet and some other neutrals. Starscream takes off his top as Tappet watches.

The point I’m trying to make here is that Tappet doesn’t actually do anything. None of the NAILs actually do anything, other than die and fill out crowd shots. Sometimes they bitch about the current situation, but even then, a lot of the time, those more vocal NAILs were actually involved in the war at some point.

This is an issue, because we’ve been presented with this entirely new group that’s in direct opposition of the war caused by every character we’d met prior to The Death of Optimus Prime.

And they have zero agency within the story. Shit just happens around them and they react. In fact, one of the major point points of RID is whether or not the Autobots should let the NAILs have agency within the very government that rules them, and it is such a point of contention that it takes literal in-story months and several disasters for them to reach a consensus. A decision that barely involves input from Metalhawk, the guy who is a NAIL, and is meant to be their advocate. Metalhawk, who is supposed to be on the same level as Bumblebee in terms of sway in the narrative.

At first, he did- he was the subtly conniving bastard who would trip Bumblebee up in front of others to make him look bad, and then deny anything of the sort happened if questioned. It was an interesting dynamic with a character that was new to the continuity. Metalhawk was interesting.

Then Starscream got involved, and Metalhawk’s role was reduced to yes-man and character motivation to both of them, because conniving is Starscream’s thing, and obviously we can’t have two bastards gang up on poor, sweet lil’ Bumblebee.

Who had a remote control that could blow up people’s heads if they pissed him off.

You remember when Bumblebee was the kid appeal character? Because I do.

The point is, the NAILs exist, but their existence isn’t justified within the story. They’re set-dressing, not characters. And now Metalhawk in particular is a prop for Shockwave, and somehow I doubt the other guys are going to be doing a hell of a lot in this story.

I dunno, it just seems like a bit of a waste.

Anyway, Skywarp sure was present in his toy tie-in issue, huh? Remember when he did that thing? And the stuff? Ah man, that was so cool!

Yeah, someone probably crossed their I’s and dotted their T’s on this one, because I’m pretty friggin’ sure this wasn’t meant to be his, even if the exclusive cover says otherwise.

and just normally gardening in a metaphysical way. but back to the flower game. in the unveiling lore book, the winnower speaks to the player directly and a bunch of this info is from there. conway's game of life resembles their flower game "as a seed resembles the star that fed the flower and all the life that made it." it's not 100% clear whether each flower is a universe of its own or just a nebulous piece of cosmically important information, but the flowers are super important. flowers come back repeatedly as a symbol of the winnower, especially red flowers. another big concept in the grander story of the game is the final shape, i.e. the thing that will conquer the universe and be the last thing that exists as it ends. it's the ultimate following of the sword logic (which isn't particularly important here, basically just might makes right but on magic steroids) and lots of people are trying to be it or figure out what it is. what we, the players, know is that there was a successful pattern in the flower game that always won. in other words, the final shape. in the aforementioned unveiling lore book, we learned that this pattern survived the destruction of the first garden that lead to the creation of our universe. the details of that conflict aren't important here (although i'd recommend reading the unveiling lore book if this is at all interesting to you) but that pattern managed to make it out. for the first however long of the universe, it was basically just an untethered mathematical pattern running around in the quantum foam. as the universe cooled down and coalesced it turned into crystals in the water of comets, which then provided a space for them to become something like life. from there, they fell into the ocean(s) of planet(s) (details on whether they appeared in parallel or just once aren't super clear or conflicting). from here we need to go on a slight tangent to keep talking about the biological origins of the vex. there's this huge company that existed during the golden age called clovis bray, named after the dude who founded it, clovis bray i. basically, this guy is space jeff bezos but arguably more shitty. he wants to become immortal and experimented on his son, clovis bray ii, but ended up killing him in the process. i think you can see how much of an egomaniac he is at this point lol. on the moon, there was a group of scientists that found an anomaly connected to the darkness/winnower (a similar artefact is what we got the unveiling book from) that drove them mad with the signal it was trying to send. clovis gets wind of it, hears the signal and flies off to europa. the signal told him he'd find the secret to immortality there (and he did, sort of). part of said secret was the vex. during the golden age the vex were found/appeared/started existing but they weren't the enemy we've faced in the modern game, they were just curious. clovis steals a vex unit from the ishtar collective on venus (might come back to them later) and brings it to europa. it builds-organizes-forms a gateway to somewhere else. that somewhere else is volantis 2082. clovis goes through the gateway and discovers a solar system entirely converted into a forge. the star is engorged and being sustained with hydrogen in order to make metals. it's surrounded by a bunch of artificial satellite worlds where the vex are n where clovis and co ended up. anywho this is where clovis gets a closer look at the vex. so from him, we've got a more concrete idea of how they got from crystals in comets to the time-travelling robots we know and love. back to the biology stuff. basically the environment the vex evolved in was way earlier than our own, so heavy metals were so rare as to be nonexistent and harmful radiation was way more prevalent. because of this, predators never evolved from the vex. they just kept cooperating and feeding off cosmic radiation and whatnot. to protect themselves, they started making "armour", perhaps some sort of gel membrane initially? but then they started forming it out of silica, which is why their fluid is called radiolarian fluid and milky white. the vex continued to cooperate and developed more and more complex swarm behaviours, signalling different facts with different configurations of cells and structures. they aren't necessary sentient or sapient, but they definitely have cognition and intelligence. their way of thinking is so alien to us as to be undefinable. they also don't have a hive mind, per se, but their pattern is so fully repeated and embodied by each unit and larger mind that they work similarly. anyhow, their silica armour was further adapted into tools and structures ad infinitum, moving on to more durable materials as the collective knowledge of the vex increased. now, the vex don't necessarily have desires or goals or anything of the sort. their entire m.o. is to make everything fit the pattern. because they first evolved from that mathematical pattern from before time, they're able to exist as nothing more than information and then hijack matter to make more of themselves. clovis found this out the hard way, cause the vex started travelling through their calls and messages and stuff (and started infecting people, too). the vex are also extremely adept at simulating stuff since there's effectively no difference between a simulation of their pattern and the pattern itself (this comes up a la weeping angels once or twice). they are so good at it, in fact, that they can simulate nigh-infinite realities within their pattern. the simulations are equally as real as baseline reality and through that (i think?) are able to time travel and hop across timelines. that may be how they ended up in our solar system during the golden age. luckily for us, they're not perfect at it, otherwise, they would have always had won (wheeeee time tomfoolery). originally their goal was thought to be writing themselves into the rules of the universe and while that may still be part of it, they're also basically trying to make everything else vex. we have two examples of them turning whole worlds into vex machines/structures, one of which happened in like three days during the collapse (the darkness armageddon that ended the golden age). their architecture is super cool, highly recommend checking out concept art or in-game footage. the whole vex network spans an incomprehensible distance, although we don't have an exact number on that. they come into systems and build beachheads and pull themselves through space and time into the system. on mercury, which was what got converted in three days, they basically turned the whole planet into a giant simulation engine. they have some ridiculous teleportation technology and their weapons pull energy from distant stars through tiny gates. they've also got weapons like the vex mythoclast that pull energy from alternate timelines/loops of time/whatever. that about covers all the notable info about the vex, but there are some cool stories/places i want to touch on. the black garden is one, which is where the climax of the first game takes us. it's untethered in time and space, basically orphaned off from the rest of the universe. after we kill its heart, it ends up on mars. at some point between the end of d1 and shadowkeep in d2, it got untethered again and we go back for the garden of salvation raid. the black garden is referenced a bunch in some of the more cosmological/mythical lore and is the other important garden i mentioned right at the start. the vex have a bunch of cool stuff on venus, too, like the vault of glass. vog is basically where they test time travel stuff and ontological (i.e. reality-affecting) tech and weaponry. if they ever manage to make that stuff work outside the vault, we're toast. also on venus is the ishtar collective which was mentioned earlier, where a bunch of scientists found that a vex unit was simulating all of them hundreds of times over. they called in a super complex ai to help break out the simulations and those simulations went and explored the vex network and have shown up a couple times since. i'm sure i'm forgetting tons of other stuff, but this is wayyyy too long already. definitely hit me up if you wanna hear a quite frankly ridiculous amount of lore about a fictional universe/race lol anyways. thank you very much for the ask n i hope you enjoyed reading if you got this far

Basically you create a stronger personal reality that affects those around you, this is no game of chance, but using the Law of Attraction properly does feel a little like stacking the odds in your favour. Back at the Avengers facility, the team was finally assembled.  Bruce and Rocket went to Norway to get Thor who had drastically taken his failure to a whole new level.  Not only was he in denial, he had also drunk himself to a stupor.  

He now sported a beer gut that would make his once good friend Vostagg envious.  His hair was also long once again but unruly kept and his beard resembled what a redneck would sport.

He wore baggy clothes and held a can of beer in his hand as he walked through the facility.

“You’re drifting left, one side there Lebowski.” Tony said as he was pulling of cart of supplies while also having some kind of tube draped over his shoulder, all these tools were for the quantum time machine. “Rachet, how’s it going?” he called out to Rocket who was working on the machine.

“It’s Rocket. Take it easy, you’re only a genius on Earth, pal.” Rocket spoke up taking a break between hammering some things together to make the panel stable.

Meanwhile in another room, Scott, Nebula and Bruce were working on the time machine suit that each person had to wear in order to survive in the quantum realm.

Scott was wearing the suit while Nebula punched in the codes and continued to make sure the suit was stable enough for high speed time travel, while Bruce went to grab the important ingredient that would help the suit work, the Pym Particle.  As Rhodey came in he said.

“Time travel suit, not bad.” As Bruce activate the part of the side belt where the Pym particle was supposed to go, Scott opened up his helmet so that he could speak as he warned Bruce.

“Hey! Hey! Hey! Easy, easy!”

“I’m being careful.” Said Bruce.

“No you’re being very—hulky.”

“I’m being careful.” Bruce argued with him.

“These are Pym Particles, alright. And ever since Hank Pym got snapped out of existence this is it! This is what we have. We’re not making anymore!”

“Scott, Scott calm down.” Rhodey said trying to calm him down.

“Sorry. We’ve got enough for one round-trip each. That’s it. No do-overs. Plus two test runs.” Scott explained trying to get the Avengers to understand just how dire this was.  But as soon as he put the Pym Particle in place, he let out a yell as he felt himself quickly shrink before returning to normal size. “One test run.” Scott said bluntly. “Alright. I’m not ready for this.”

“I’m game.” They all turned around and there stood Clint. “I’ll do it.” It was then Clint got in the suit and as Nebula began working out the coding’s for the suit Bruce explained to him.

“Clint, now you’re gonna feel a little discombobulated from the chronoshift don’t worry about that.” Clint nodded and that’s when Rhodey said.

“Wait a second, let me ask you something. If we can do this, you know…go back in time, why don’t we just find baby Thanos you know and?” he then made the motion of wrapping a chord around Thanos’ neck before tightening it, otherwise basically killing Thanos as a baby.

“First of all that’s horrible.” Bruce stated.

“It’s Thanos.” Rhodey argued.

“And second, time doesn’t work that way. Changing the past doesn’t change the future.”

“Look, we go back and get the stones before Thanos gets them. Thanos doesn’t have the stones. Problem solved.” Scott said.

“Bingo.” Stated Clint.

“That’s not how it works.” Nebula stated.

“Well that’s what I heard.”

“Wait, but who? Who told you that?” asked Bruce and it was then Rhodey began listing all the movies that dealt with time travel.

“Star Trek, Terminator, Time Cop, Time after Time.”

“Quantum Leap.” Added Scott.

“Wrinkle in Time, Somewhere in time.”

“Hot tub time machine?”

“Hot tub time machine. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Basically any movie that deals with time travel.”

“Die Hard? No that’s not one.”

“I don’t know why everyone believes that but that isn’t true. Think about it; if you travel to the past…that past becomes your future….and your former present. Becomes the past. Which can’t now be changed by your new future.” Bruce said trying to explain to Rhodey the real truth of time travel.

“Exactly.” Nebula agree.

“So Back to the Future is a bunch of bullshit?” Scott asked in a tone that felt like he had been living a lie.

*Morowa’s POV*

Thanks to Stark and Rocket, the quantum time machine was now fully complete.  With Clint now all suited up and standing at the center of the machine, we were ready to do our first test run to see if we can successfully maneuver throughout time with the new suit involved.

“Alright Clint. We’re going in three…two….one.” the machine activated and soon he shrunk down and disappeared.  I stood by Bruce and Steve and I asked him.

“Where exactly did you send him?”

“It was Nat’s idea.” I then turned towards her and she said.

“I want him to have a chance of what we can bring back.” At hearing that I knew I didn’t need to ask him just where he had gone. Within ten seconds Bruce counted down and soon the machine activated again and Clint screamed out a name, my guess is that it was probably his daughter’s.

We all raced up to him and Nat knelt down in front of him and said to him as she held onto him.

“Hey, hey, look at me. You okay?” Clint was a little dazed but whispered assuringly to her that he was okay. As the two of them stood back up Clint said the two most hopeful words we were all desperate to here.

“It worked.” In his hand he held a baseball glove that probably belonged to his sons and he said to us louder this time as he tossed Stark the glove. “It worked.”

We were now in the meeting room with visuals of all six infinity stones on screen.

“Okay so the how works. Now we gotta figure out the when. And the where.” Steve said. “Almost everyone in the room has had an encounter with at least one of the six infinity stones.”

“Or substitute the word “encounter” for “damn near been killed” by one of the six infinity stones.” Said Tony.

“Well, I haven’t.” Scott piped in. “But I don’t know even know what the hell you’re are talking about.”

“Regardless, we only have enough Pym Particles for one round-trip each. And these stones have been in a lot of different places throughout history.”

“Our history.” Stated Stark. “So, not a lot of convenient spots to just drop in, yeah?”

“Which means we have to pick our targets.” I finished his thought.

“Correct.” He said pointing to me.

“So, let’s start with the Aether. Thor, what do you know?” Steve said towards Thor.  We all turned to the god of thunder who was lounging in one of the chairs in the corner but he was unresponsive.

“Is he asleep?” asked Nat.

“No. No I’m pretty sure he’s dead.” Answered Rauri. He then walked up towards the god and slapped him over the head waking him up.  Thor let out a loud snore and when he saw that his beer had fallen to the floor, he groaned. “If you would kindly sober yourself up, we’d like to know about the Aether while we’re still young!” Thor looked at my son in law and that’s when he said.

“You know my sister had a wolf just like you. Much, much, much bigger though. It could’ve killed you if it wanted to. Bruce you remember my sister’s pet.” Wow, he must be so drunk that he could probably see Rauri in his wolf form at this state.

“I’d rather not talk about that right now.” I could notice Rauri’s claws starting to come out as his anger was slowly starting to boil.  Damnit Thor don’t you know never to piss off an angry Irish man.

“Thor please. The Aether. Tell us what you know of it.” I said trying to get his attention on me and not on Rauri.  He let out an exaggerated groan and exhale as he said.

“Of course witch warrior.” He walked up to the monitor which held out “REALITY STONE”. “Um, where to start? Um…” he took off his shades before continuing in a sluggish manner, “The Aether, firstly, is not a stone. Someone called it a stone before.” He pointed to Steve who just looked at him confused. “Um, it’s more of an angry, sludge sort of thing…so someone’s gonna need to amend that. And stop saying that.” He said as he did something with his prosthetic eye he had gotten from Rocket.

Oh dear god we are not gonna get anywhere with this.

“Here’s an interesting story, though, about the Aether. My grandfather, many years ago had to hide the stone from the Dark Elves. Ooo scary beings. So, Jane, actually.” The monitors then transitioned form a picture of the stone as well as the Dark Elves to a picture of Physicist Jane Foster. “Oh there she is.” He touched the screen with his shades as he continued, “Yeah so, Jane was an old flame of mine.”

Dear god please someone stop him. Or at least tell him to get onto the point.

“You know, she stuck her hand inside a rock this one time….and then the Aether, stuck itself inside her. And she became very, very sick. And so I had to take her to Asgard, which is where I’m from…and uhh we had to try and fix her. We were dating at the time, you see….and I got to introduce her to my mother….whose dead, and um…..” at this point Thor began to grow sad.

“Oh, you know, Jane and I aren’t even dating anymore, so….” At this point Bruce gave the signal to Tony to get him to stop talking and end this discussion before Thor had a breakdown.  Thank god for Stark.

As Thor continue to mumble about how things never last forever and it was then Tony came up to him and said.

“Why don’t you come sit down?”

“No I’m not done yet. The only thing that is permanent in life is impermanence.” He then lets out a laugh and that’s when Stark offers him breakfast but Thor says he’d like a bloody Mary.

Next up was the Power Stone.  As we all gathered around the table eating some Chinese takeout, Rocket was walking around the table explaining to us how the Guardians of the Galaxy came into contact with the Power Stone.

“Quill said he stole the Power Stone from Morag.”

“Is that a person?” asked Bruce.

“No Morag’s a planet. Quill was a person.” Rocket stated.

“Like—like a planet? Like in outer space?” asked Scott almost not believing what he was hearing.

“Aww look. It’s like a little puppy all happy and everything. Do you wanna go to space? Do you wanna go to space puppy? I’ll take you to space.” Rocket mocked Scott as he ruffled his head but Scott moved his head away a second later, not wanting to be babied.

It is the duty of the sorcerer supreme and all the sorcerers he takes in to protect not only the time stone, but each of the sanctums our first teacher created. One in London, one in Hong Kong, and one here in New York.”

“Wait, wait there’s a sanctum in New York? Say isn’t that where that Doctor lived?” asked Nat.

“Yeah it was uhh—Bleecker Street?” Bruce said confused.

“Yes. 177A Bleecker Street. In fact I think if I recall at the time Loki came to Earth a few years ago, the Ancient one herself had the Eye of Agamotto with her.” I answered.

“So…..if we pick the right year, there are three stones in New York.” I grinned at Natasha.  It was then Bruce sat up and said.

“Shut the front door.”

“Right?” Scott asked astoundingly.

“Alright you heard the man. Stroke those keys Jolly Green.” Said Tony as Bruce began punching in the coordinates.  

“Tracker’s engaged.” I saw Clint look down at his palm and Rocket said.

“You promise to bring that back in one piece right?”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, I’ll do my best.” Clint responded.

“As far as promises go, that was pretty lame.” Bruce then came and stood between Scott and Steve.  I turned to Rauri and nodded to him and I reached out telepathically.

‘You remember what we talked about right?’

‘Yes mum. I’ll try not to be too hard on him.’ I nodded again and that’s when Nat said with a small smile.

“See you in a minute.” With that the machine began to activate and all our helmets came up.  I exhaled until suddenly feeling that jolt as I and the rest of the team began to shrink.  I followed close behind Tony, Scott, Bruce and Steve as we headed towards our destination.

Ten Immersive Games (and 5 that try but aren’t)

All games are abstractions. Otherwise we’d all die of thirst and buried in sand while playing Forbidden Desert. There is always the thing the game tells you you’re doing, and the thing you’re actually doing, which is generally moving around little bits of cardboard and wood. What’s cool - at least to me - is when games make you feel like you’re actually doing the thing the game is about - when you get so immersed in the gameplay that your throat gets dry and your arms get tired from digging sand.

Here are some that do that for me. 

FORBIDDEN DESERT

Designer: Matt Leacock Publisher: Gamewright

As mentioned in the intro, Forbidden Desert has great tension-building mechanics, effective art that reinforces the theme of searching for ancient relics in a desert, and it really makes you feel like you’re trudging under the oppressive sun, watching the horizon for sandstorms and checking how much water you have left in your canteen. A simple game, but one that - win or lose - always puts you in its world, and always ends with a nail-biting finish. 

TYRANTS OF THE UNDERDARK

Designers: Peter Lee, Rodney Thompson, Andrew Veen Publisher: Gale Force Nine

A combination of deck-builder and area control game that requires a lot of tactical thinking, but what makes it immersive is the the purple-tinged art and fantasy setting which take me right back to when I was twelve years old and first discovered dungeons and dragons. Suddenly I am a cruel dark elf noble, scheming against rival clans and sending out my minions to do my bidding in the Underdark, and it’s glorious! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!

WATERGATE

Designer: Matthias Cramer Publisher: Frosted Games

A history lesson in a box and a chess-like game of tug-a-war that visualizes connecting crimes to conspirators in a literal sticking pins in corkboard way. Whether you play as Nixon or the Journalists, you really feel you are fighting a desperate fight to hide or reveal the truth. An excellent game.

This co-op game about plotting to kill Hitler is possibly the most immersive game on the list. Everything about it puts you in the moment, making you feel like a desperate conspirator constantly listening for the knock of the gestapo on your door. Making plans, gathering necessary papers, weapons, and tools, and then feeling those plans slip through your fingers as you wait for the right moment. Even the way you get out of jail is thematically grim. All you have to do is betray your friends. 

RESCUE POLAR BEARS

Designer: Jog Kung, Huang Yi Ming Publisher: TWOPLUS Games

So thematic it is sometimes painful to play. You are fighting to save polar bears against a background of climate change, and as the temperatures rise and the sea ice gets smaller and smaller it begins to feel utterly hopeless, and then -often as not - you lose, which makes you even more depressed. It does feel good when you win, but sadly, that doesn’t happen often. 

TWILIGHT STRUGGLE

Designer: Ananda Gupta, Jason Matthews Publisher: GMT Games

I’ve never been a global superpower, so I don’t know what it really feels like, but this game, with its simple mechanics of trying to get more influence chips onto a country than your opponent, and the action cards that teach history with every play, sure makes me feel like one. Balancing aggression against a rapidly lowering defcon status, and fighting each other through proxy wars really gives this that old paranoid cold war feeling. 

ABOMINATION

Designer: Dan Blanchett Publisher: Plaid Hat Games

In this game, you are competing to be the first scientist to build Frankenstein’s monster a companion. To do this you have to steal bodies from hospitals, morgues, public executions, harvest their organs, and bring them to life with electro-galvanism, all the while lecturing to make money and maintaining your reputation so you’re not chased out of town by peasants with pitchforks. And it really does feel like you’re doing all those things. The art, gameplay, and little bits of narrative text when the game asks you to make a moral decision, all contribute to a gleefully gory atmosphere reminiscent of a Hammer horror film. 

ROBINSON CRUSOE

Designer: Ignacy Trzewiczek Publisher: Portal Games

This one might be too immersive for its own good. This is a co-op survival game where you are stranded on a desert island, trying to build tools and shelter in order to not die from exposure, wild animals, madness, and ancient curses. We really enjoyed the challenge of it for a while, but it is punishingly hard, and after a while it became more frustrating than fun, but if you really want to feel like you’re never more than one bad night away from dying of dysentery, this is the game for you.  

EVERDELL

Designer: James A. Wilson Publisher: Starling Games

A game of cute animals building communities over the course of a year, Everdell is basically a resource gathering engine builder, but the art and theme of the cards puts you right into its world of forest creatures in waistcoats and aprons. It’s one of those games that I wish had more actual narrative elements to go with the mechanics so we could learn the stories of the villages. As they’re not there, though, we’re forced to use our imaginations instead - and that’s not a bad thing. 

Now, here’s five games that don’t make you feel their themes. 

WINGSPAN

Designer: Elizabeth Hargrave Publisher: Stonemaier Games

This is a very pretty game, with cool bird art and facts on the cards, and a unique theme. Unfortunately, I do not feel like I am a conservationist, or a bird watcher, or doing anything that actually has to do with birds. I am just playing a game with birds on the cards. Not that it’s a bad game, the game play just has very little to do with the theme. 

TZOLK’IN

Designer: Simone Luciani, Daniele Tascini Publisher: Czech Games Edition

Mayan civilization and the Mayan calendar are cool themes for a game, and the art does a great job backing that up, but when it comes right down to it, Tzolk’in is more interested in its cool, gear-based mechanics than its world, and I never feel like I’m doing anything but playing a worker placement game, where the theme could be anything.

SCYTHE

Designer: Jamey Stegmaier Publisher: Stonemaier Games

Scythe is a big, beautiful game set in an alternate pre-WWI eastern Europe, where, in addition to infantry and cavalry, there are giant robots! Parts of it are very immersive, particularly the encounter cards, the art, and the minis, which are gorgeous. The part that isn’t immersive is the ending. The game ends when one player completes six objectives, and then each player totals up their points. For a game that feels like it’s all about conquest and expansion, the ending doesn’t feel very glorious. It’s more like checking a spread sheet. 

QUANTUM

Designer: Eric Zimmerman Publisher: Funforge

I like quantum, but it’s really an abstract game pretending to be a space adventure game. Your space ships are dice, and depending on what number they are showing, they can do different things. Although there is art for the four player colors that depicts them as four different empires, that’s where the narrative stops. I never feel like I’m running a galactic empire. I just feel like I’m moving dice around. 

YEDO

Designer: Thomas Vande Ginste, Wolf Plancke Publisher: Eggertspiele

In Yedo, you play the leader of a noble family in the Edo period of Japan, plotting to become the power behind the throne. Except that’s not what you’re doing. Really, you’re completing missions by collecting items on a list and having those items in your position when you go to a particular spot on the map. The way the game makes missions more difficult is by making the lists of items longer, and increasing the number of locations you have to visit. It feels less like intrigue and skullduggery, and more like doing errands, which is too bad, because it’s a fun theme and the writing is evocative. It’s just the mechanics that disappoint.

I get the point, but the problem is that even fictional/fantasy/scifi stories often rely on suspension of disbelief. A grounded setting where a lot of the weight of the story relies on immersion and identifying with the protagonist or their problems needs a certain amount of realism. That realism doesn't need to be absolute but a certain amount of things must be working according to what you expect. That's why tropes are such a powerful tool and why a lot of stories feature story beats similar to what an ordinary person irl could experience even in fantastical settings. But once you know for sure that something doesn't work "Like that" it easily can break your immersion. Scifi struggles a lot more with because science is often a part of these stories and the point of divergence of real science and fictional science can often feel glaring, especially when the author obviously didn't understand where that point was. Because a situation where something obviously "wrong" happens but you are expected to just flow with it is making your mind stumble because fundamental our heads are made to work with our observable reality (Funnily a similar problem occurres when learning more out there science like n-dementional spaces or quantum physic, it is so different from what we see and touch that our mind needs time to adapt). You can work these breaking of expectations into the story, the first time will still feel glaring. A workaround is to have another character call it out and then have it explained to them as a standin for the reader. There are similar options like slowly developing the "unrealism". But just ignoring that the reader will go "oh that doesn't work like that" in an otherwise immersive story will break immersion. That's why you tend to explain magic to some extent if magic plays a role, to give your audience a chance to adapt their expectations. So knowing what works in reality is useful knowledge for authors to keep the suspension of disbelief intact by easing the reader into things that conflict with their expectations. You can't make it work for everyone, sometimes people's expectations conflict to much (a creationist and someone knowing evolution is real have very different expectations when it comes to the origins of species for example). Funnily enough there is the opposite problem too, expecting your audience knows to much about reality, this often happens if you give kids to young books intended for older readers. Just think about your target audience, including what their knowledge would be, and do some research. A lot of the people doing swordfighting actually like fantasy today and this was probably prompted by the fact that someone enjoyed a story until the immersion was broken by something the author wasn't even aware of as unrealistic.

Fantasy writing tip:

Ducking and jumping in sword fights doesn’t work. You’re not going to be fast enough to get low enough for the duck, and you’re not going to jump high enough for the jump to work, and also horizontal “duckable” and “jumpable” cuts are pretty rare in sword fights anyway. Most swings are going to be diagonal because it makes them easier to recover from and harder to dodge.

Dodging is actually slower than parrying with your blade or crossguard anyway in most cases, but if your footwork is good, a dodge backward or to the left or right is a much safer and more effective means of dodging.

There are effective things you can do when crouching low, but these are usually combined with a high guard to protect the head instead of relying purely on the duck to keep you safe.

The Pre-pandemic Universe Was the Fiction

What the coronavirus outbreak reveals is not the unreality of our present moment, but the illusions it shatters.

Years ago, I started writing a short story, the premise of which was this: All the clocks in the world stop working, at once. Not time itself, just the convention of time. Life freezes in place. The protagonist, who works in a Midtown Manhattan high-rise, takes the elevator down to the lobby and walks out onto the street to find the world on pause, its social rhythms and commercial activity suspended. In the air is a growing feeling of incipient chaos. I got about midway through page 3 and stopped. I didn’t know what it meant.

One word I’ve been hearing a lot lately is unreal. Mostly, I hear it from my own mouth, because I haven’t left the house in a month, but also I hear it from friends on Zoom or Skype, and from the news on TV or online. Unreal, or its variations: not real, surreal, this can’t be real.

Of course, the global catastrophe unfolding is nothing but real. Stock-market convulsions have destroyed, in a matter of days, nest eggs built over decades. More than 16 million people in the United States applied for unemployment over just three weeks. The case count and death toll grow with each refresh of the page.

And yet some part of me still doesn’t want to accept that these calamities are really happening. Not really. What does it mean to say that this doesn’t feel real? The feeling seems to derive from the assumption that life before the pandemic, “normal” life, was real. That we have departed from it into strange territory.

But what if it’s exactly the other way around?

What the current crisis and our responses to it, both individual and institutional, have reminded us of is not the unreality of the pandemic, but the illusions shattered by it:

The grand, shared illusion that we are separate from nature.

That life on Earth is generally stable, not precarious.

That, despite what we know from the historical and geological and biological record, human civilization—thanks to advancements in science and medicine and social and governmental structures—exists inside a bubble, protected from the kind of cataclysmic event we are currently experiencing.

What I’ve learned in the past few weeks is that this supposed technological bubble was just that: a thin layer that popped easily.

The stronger bubble, the one that persists, is the psychological one. Even as our stark new reality becomes clear, it remains hard to accept that “normal” was the fiction. It will take some time to let go of the long-held, seldom-questioned assumptions of everyday life: that tomorrow will look like yesterday, next year like the last.

These assumptions are a luxury. For me, they are a cross product of my intersecting privileges: born in the United States, to professional parents, at a point in history where my life has proceeded, for the most part, through a series of economic booms without major socio- or geopolitical upheavals. Or at least with upheavals far enough removed so as to allow me to feel physically and mentally insulated. Living with these assumptions for so long has created a kind of expectancy as to how things tend to go, that my life has to make some kind of sense.

But what if it doesn’t? Quantum mechanics might provide a useful, if rough, analogy. At a fundamental level, physical reality defies our most basic intuitions about causality and locality, which is to say about time and space. Our senses and perceptions evolved to evade tigers and catch food, not to understand the properties of photons and subatomic particles. Despite more than 100 years of effort by the world’s leading physicists and philosophers, the quantum realm remains incomprehensibly bizarre. As it turns out, science fiction cannot invent anything weirder than the brute reality of the universe itself. The fact that we cannot comprehend it is a form of environmental mismatch.

We may face a similar type of conceptual difficulty in grappling with a pandemic. Our brains may not be naturally suited to dealing with problems of this scale or nature. Even our language, our concepts, are inapt tools, artifacts of our previous reality. Unprecedented, historic, we proclaim, with each new, grim milestone. As if precedent and history have bearing on a virus that seeks only to maximize copies of itself.

Perhaps most revealing is how we say the damage, the fallout, and the speed at which things are happening feel unimaginable, a word telling both in its rightness and wrongness. We “imagine” this kind of disaster all the time, in our dystopian-novel trilogies, our bingeable streaming miniseries. And most famously, in our summer popcorn global-disaster blockbusters, a well-worn genre that derives its pleasure and dread from the same source: literally imagining the worst. We enter dark, cool theaters in the middle of July, portals to other universes in which various doomsday scenarios play out. But here’s the key: We’re always behind a scrim of safety, a barrier between what we think of as possible and impossible. We watch these movies as tourists in an alternate reality, knowing that our round trip lasts two and a half hours, and then we will be home, safe in the real—and boring—world.

And of course, novel, we call it, but SARS-CoV-2 has been around in some form for thousands of years or more. It is novel only to us, Homo sapiens, the one species that imagines its survival, its success, as the central narrative of the story of this planet. A story with a beginning and middle and end. A story that has structure and rules. A story that means something.

In the current chapter of this story, there are ostensible villains: some members of the Trump administration (including the president himself) and officials at the state level who have been reckless or incompetent or self-interested or shortsighted or all of the above. There are heroes as well: certain governors and mayors, science advisers and health-care professionals, individuals who, in a time of uncertainty, have performed with courage, duty, expertise, and sacrifice.

But the reality is, zooming out to the largest scale, fighting the pandemic effectively requires us to take actions that go against our instincts, our intuitions, the things we evolved to be good at. Cooperation—farsighted, strategic, collaborative action—is required to defeat an adversary that relies on our physical cohesion. We can find meaning in how we fight it, but relying on our old illusions, assuming that we, as humans, will prevail, is dangerous. Life, for us and the virus, is about genes propagating themselves. No amount of magical thinking or bluster or can-do attitude can change that fact.

As we hear reports of peak deaths and curves flattening, the quiet wonderings about when life will return to normal will get louder every day. As the whispers grow, it will be important to remember: Things don’t have to be resolved in a way that works out all right for us, or for our economy, for any particular systems or ways of living. Things aren’t necessarily going to be okay in a reasonable timeframe just because we want them to. To think otherwise is to succumb to the fiction, a sheltered, resource-rich mindset (presumably not shared by the billions of people who have long lived in volatile conditions and are thus under no such illusions).

Five hundred years ago, Copernicus re-centered the universe away from us, outward. The COVID-19 outbreak is a reminder: The world isn’t for us; we are part of it. We’re not the protagonists of this movie; there is no movie. After all the suffering and wreckage have subsided, one good thing for our long-term viability will be to have changed our ways of thinking. To have regained a humility.

I say humility because, as it turns out, unimaginable says more about the limits of our imagination than about reality itself. What we really mean when we say that this pandemic feels “unimaginable” is that we had not imagined it. Just as imagination can mislead us, though, it will be imagination—scientific, civic, moral—that helps us find new ways of doing things, helps remind us of how far we have to go as a species. How little we still understand about our place in this world—terrifying and awful at the moment—but also how much we still get to discover. How fragile and rare our ordered structures are, our fictions, and how precious. How next time, we might rebuild them, stronger.

i guess first i’d like to apologize that i took so long to answer your question; at first i didnt see it cause my mom was in town and i was off tumblr, and then when i finally did i wanted to take my time meditating on how to answer it. 

second i’d like to clarify that anything i say on this subject is only applicable to me and my practice and my beliefs, and my intention is not to speak for or over anyone. one of the wonderful things about being a witch, Christian or otherwise, is that it is a very personal, personalized path, and everyone has their own unique journey and set of beliefs and i would never presume to speak about anyone else’s deal. that is not and will never be my place. when i look to find my way in my practice and study, i can (and do) absolutely learn from other humans, but ultimately i am led by the Word and the Holy Spirit when it comes to choosing what i will or won’t integrate into my practice. God is my ultimate authority, not people (no offense to people lmao)

((tl;dr - i’m not mixing ideologies and there’s a lot of other blogs that can answer your question better and probs more precisely sorry lol)) 

this hard for me because if i give any kind of detailed answer, i will by necessity have to discuss at length my Christianity, and that’s a very personal thing that i’m still trying to be more open about. when i say, “my Christianity” i mean that the way i practice Christianity (my belief system and my relationship w God) differs greatly from what people generally assume to know or understand about Christianity. what i mean to say is: when you say, “i’m Christian” people immediately assume all kinds of things about what you believe, based on their own personal experience with practitioners of the religion, and as there are numerous denominations, those assumptions can vary greatly and are almost always wrong. the reason i have a hard time being open about it is that i have been trying to talk with people about it my whole life, both with believers and non-believers and it’s almost always been a negative experience, so it can be hard for me to open up with regards to that.

so i guess the short answer is that witchcraft isn’t really an ideology. neither is it a religion. it’s a practice. it’s a way in which i exercise my God-given power. and that’s really the key for me, because even if i might do something like say, make a protection sachet, smoke cleanse my home, perform a binding spell, etc (which are the types of things that a secular witch might do or a wiccan or a pagan), when i perform them, i draw my power from God and the Word and the knowledge of the promises he made to me in the Covenant.

a lot of my beliefs are geared towards using Faith based power to alter things in both the spiritual and the physical. i’ve found in some of my most frustrating conversations about this topic that most people don’t have the same vocabulary definition of Faith as i do, so here’s some stuff about that to clarify what i mean.

here’s what Merriam-Webster says about faith:

and i think that’s people generally think about when they hear people use the word “Faith.” they think of it as just a synonym for religion or belief in God, or as a blind belief in something for which there is no proof, i.e. “blind faith” or “just hanging on till Jesus comes” or clinging desperately to something unrealistic in a delusional manner. obviously some of these are more derogatory than others, but i’ve spoken to all sorts on this subject and come across all of these misunderstandings of the word “Faith” at one point or another. the cool thing about the Bible is that it will often offer its own definitions to the words used within. 

one of my favorite verses on the subject of what Faith is, is Hebrews 11:1. when this verse comes to mind i often think of the NKJV translation, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”[x] 

here is the same verse in The Amplified:

Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].

so there’s a lot to unpack here. firstly, Faith is substantive. it isn’t the superficial placation of a worried mind or shallow platitudes void of meaning used to make oneself appear enlightened and righteous in the eyes of their earthly peers. it’s not shouting ineffectually into the void. it’s practical and effective. it’s power to change reality, not only in the spiritual but in the physical.

the stuff about “title deed, confirmation” and “divinely guaranteed” is in reference to the things promised to us by God in the Abrahamic Covenant, of which Jesus’s blood sacrifice was a fulfillment. i am included in this Covenant by virtue of the Blood of Jesus, even though i am not Jewish, i am included because i accept His sacrifice as a placeholder for me and have entered into Covenant with Him.

so Faith is the confirmation of things divinely guaranteed by the Covenant, the comprehension as fact things that cannot be experienced by the physical senses. Faith isn’t belief without evidence, it is the evidence. my belief of a thing (as long as it is in line with the Word and the Covenant) is enough to bring it into being. this is really cool when you start learning stuff about quantum physics (like i have the most basic of understandings on that subject, but the little i know about it is very exciting, the idea that science is finally starting to confirm what i’ve known to be true all along, check out the documentary, What the Bleep Do We Know) and how simply observing a thing can change the entire behavior or nature of the thing. so like, something promised to me by God in the Covenant both is realized and isn’t realized depending on whether or nor i observe it. once i observe it by having the knowledge of it, the understanding of it, and finally the belief in it, it comes to pass, or manifests into existence. there’s also scientific evidence that you can speak Life or Death into a thing. anyways i’m digressing.

my point is, if i were in a doctor’s office and i told them i believe i have the power to change my physical reality through words and belief, they might jot down that i have “Magical Thinking” and like, i guess being a witch i wouldn’t argue with them. it is essentially magic. when i had the rare pleasure of having a pleasant conversation with someone about my beliefs, it was almost always with a non-believer, and the best way i could think of to get them to understand is, “it looks a lot like witchcraft.” when i finally decided to start calling myself a Christian witch i was basically making the decision to stop fighting the direction that the Holy Spirit was obviously counseling me towards. i always felt lead to do things like smoke cleansing and other “magical” practices, but i was afraid that i’d be doing something wrong or unnecessary. here’s the thing: God has not given us a spirit of fear so i try to be critical of any decision made based in fear. since i started down this path in earnest i have experienced great joy and fulfillment, and better results in areas where i had previously struggled (more on this bit later). 

my attitude when talking to God is one of familiarity and assertiveness. He’s my Dad and my friend and my teacher, and we have a Blood Covenant. i talk to Him casually, and when i need to claim one of the benefits of my Covenant, i.e. healing/health, protection, a sound mind, i call it done and thank him for the result that i believe will manifest. when i go to exercise my Dominion over the physical, i.e. a bee in my space, the toilet threatening to overflow, a symptom of sickness, a person threatening me, i speak to it with the authority of someone who knows they have a Covenant with God and God-given Dominion over this world, and i use Jesus’s name. when He tells me to do something, i try to be obedient.

the reason i’ve been getting better results since i started using physical tools more often isn’t necessarily because i believe that there is inherent power in the use of them. sometimes i’ve done things in the physical because i felt lead to by the Holy Spirit, and i endeavor to be obedient even if i don’t understand the reason. there is power in obedience. 

sometimes i’ve done things in the physical because not everything set in motion in the spiritual world by Faith has instantaneous results (some things do, somethings don’t), some things take time. i struggle with memory problems and sometimes i’ll honestly forget that i already dealt with such and such issue and i’ll pray over the situation again and again, having no recollection of having done it and i feel as though this hurts my efficacy. it makes me feel disorganized in my practice. if i do a working or a ritual in the physical (like a binding or a protection sachet) to deal with the issue, i will be more likely to remember that it is done and dealt with, and every time i remember it going forward, instead of feeling the need to pray again, i will instead reaffirm my original working, strengthening it instead of weakening it.

sometimes i do things in the physical because we know about health benefits available from certain herbs, foods, oils, and even crystals. some people will say things like, “that’s relying on something other than God for healing” and they say the same thing about knowledge gleaned from the stars and planets, but like, HELLO, God made all that stuff. i don’t worship His creation, but i do celebrate it, and i am thankful for it, and i believe there is power to be found in it. some of that power we know about (i.e. medicinal herbs, essential oils) and some we either don’t know about or can’t conclusively prove with science yet.

that leads me to the other reason i do things in the physical to mirror my workings in the spiritual. there are certain practices and traditions that have been used for centuries in magic that don’t have any known, scientifically proven reason for being effective. but people keep using them, and they keep being effective. i know part of that is that belief is a powerful thing. we are beings made in God’s image. we are powerful creators, and if people believe a thing with enough conviction, it can come to pass. however, it could be that there are some very real effects that a physical substance could have in the spiritual realm. anything that alters the mind for instance (like mugwort being helpful in astral projection). my own personal example is this: i use commanding oil made from a base of licorice root and calamus root and mineral oil. i do this because it seems to be the agreed upon recipe for commanding oil and has a long tradition. i use it when assigning tasks to Angels. do i absolutely HAVE to do this? no probably not, but it helps me with making my marching orders official, like giving an assignment to troops with an official signature or seal.

basically it all comes down to this: Faith is like a muscle. you have to work on strengthening it. at least i do. so if these things help me out in the areas i have trouble with so i can “lift more weight,” i’m gonna utilize them. especially if i feel led to by the Holy Spirit. anytime i feel that i vibe with a witchcraft working, and want to add it to my practice, i look at it critically, i think about what the Word says, i ask the Holy Spirit, i think about why it might be helpful, and if it passes all my scrutiny, i go for it. if you still have trouble reconciling the ideas of Christianity and witchcraft coexisting, i’d recommend popping on over to the #christian witch tag, as there are a lot of good posts on that by people that are way more qualified than i am. 

i’m able to be a Christian witch the same way i’m able to be a Christian transgender pansexual man. not everything espoused by mainstream Christianity has a basis in the Word. it’s sad but a lot of the time people choose to parrot their pastors or follow tradition and modern, localized cultural norms instead of looking to see what the Bible actually says.

Newly observed phenomenon could lead to new quantum devices

An exotic physical phenomenon known as a Kohn anomaly has been found for the first time in an unexpected type of material by researchers at MIT and elsewhere. They say the finding could provide new insights into certain fundamental processes that help determine why metals and other materials display the complex electronic properties that underlie much of today's technology. The way electrons interact with phonons—which are essentially vibrations passing through a crystalline material—determines the physical processes that take place inside many electronic devices. These interactions affect the way metals resist electric current, the temperature at which some materials suddenly become superconductors, and the very low temperature requirements for quantum computers, among many other processes. But electron-phonon interactions have been difficult to study in detail because they are generally very weak. The new study has found a new, stronger kind of unusual electron-phonon interaction: The researchers induced a Kohn anomaly, which was previously thought to exist only in metals, in an exotic material called a topological Weyl semimetal. The finding could help shed light on important aspects of the complex interplay between electrons and phonons, they say. The new finding, based on both theoretical predictions and experimental observation, is described this week in the journal Physical Review Letters, in a paper by MIT graduate students Thanh Nguyen and Nina Andrejevic, postdoc Ricardo Pablo-Pedro, Research Scientist Fei Han, Professor Mingda Li, and 14 others at MIT and several other universities and national laboratories. Kohn anomalies, first discovered in the 1950s by physicist Walter Kohn, reflect a sudden change, sometimes described as a kind of kink or wiggle, in the graph describing a physical parameter called the electron response function. This discontinuity in an otherwise smooth curve reflects a sudden change of the capability of electrons for shielding phonons. This can give rise to instabilities in the propagation of electrons through the material, and can lead to many new electronic properties. These anomalies have been observed before in certain metals and in other highly electrically conductive materials such as graphene, but had never been seen or predicted before in a "topological material," whose electrical behaviors are robust against perturbation. In this case, a kind of topological material called a Weyl semimetal, specifically tantalum phosphide, was found to be capable of exhibiting this unusual anomaly. Unlike in conventional metals, where a property called the Fermi surface drives the formation of the Kohn anomaly, in this material, the Weyl points serve as the driving force. Because electron-phonon couplings are taking place practically everywhere all the time, they can be a major source of disturbance in delicate physical systems such as those used to represent data in quantum computers. Measuring the strength of these interactions, which is key to knowing how to protect such quantum-based technologies, has been very difficult, but this new finding, Li says, provides a way of making such measurements. "The Kohn anomaly can be used to quantify how strong the electron-phonon coupling can be," he says. To measure the interactions, the team made use of advanced neutron and X-ray scattering probes at three national laboratories—Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology—to probe the behavior of the tantalum phosphide material. "We predicted that there is a Kohn anomaly in the material just based on pure theory," Li explains, Using their calculations, "we could guide the experiments to the point where we want to search for the phenomenon, and we see a very good agreement between theory and the experiments." Martin Greven, a professor of physics at the University of Minnesota who was not involved in this research, says this work "has impressive breadth and depth, spanning both sophisticated theory and scattering experiments. It breaks new ground in condensed matter physics, in that it establishes a new kind of Kohn anomaly." A better understanding of the electron-phonon couplings could help lead the way to developing such materials as better high-temperature superconductors or fault-tolerant quantum computers, the researchers say. This new tool could be used to probe material properties in search of those that remain relatively unaffected at higher temperatures. Brent Fultz, a professor of materials science and applied physics at Caltech, who was also not involved in this work, adds that "perhaps these effects will help the development of materials with new thermal or electronic properties, but since they are so new, we need time to think about what they can do." Nguyen, the paper's lead author, says he thinks this work helps to demonstrate the sometimes overlooked importance of phonons in the behavior of topological materials. Materials such as these, whose surface electrical properties are different from those of the bulk material, are a hot area of current research. "I think this could lead us to further understand processes that would underlie some of these materials that hold a lot of promise for the future," says Andrejevic, who along with Han was a co-lead author on the paper. "Although electron-phonon interaction is long known to exist, the experimental prediction and observation of these interactions is exceedingly rare," says professor of physics and astronomy Pengcheng Dai at Rice University, who also was not involved in this work. These results, he says, "provide an excellent demonstration of the power of combined theory and experiments as a way to extend our understanding of these exotic materials."
