Hey, lord Henry ! I know, it's kind of a long ask but since you love conversation, I don't think you'll mind it too much. Btw it's inspired by a post from @burnt-cheese-toastie in the Oscar Wilde enthusiasts community.

I'm curious about your opinion on one thing. I heard your disdain for the word "always" and now I'm curious.

What do you think of this idea of forever holding onto one thing, even to the point of losing ourselves and feeling an unbearable emptiness ?

Let's use a completely hypothetical person that you definitely don't haven't met in-persln 🙂‍↕️. I'll name him "Donovan White".

Donovan really wants to preserve one thing. Random example : his beauty and youth. And that to the point of selling his soul so he doesn't bear the weight of age and looks as innocent as he once did. As unchanging as a portrait.

Yes, he's actually handsome to the eyes of society, and not just self-absorbed (both are true). Think of someone as beautiful as mr. Gray.

Now, he basically indulges in his bad nature, acts callous or even cruel when inconvenienced, enjoys superficial things while losing sight of deeper connections and anything that doesn't match estheticism.

All of that are consequences of Donovan holding onto an ideal of his permanent innocent angelic lookss coupled with hedonism, until he ultimately ends his own life in a fit of desperation.

So, what do you think ? On the "forever" part, because I know you're an advocate of the hedonism part.

If I didn't explain this hypothetical man's case clearly enough, let me know.

I would say, my dear fellow, that this Donovan is wasting his time. He is spending his life in a state of guilt and fear instead of living one he would want to live again if given the option to. It is a mistake many people tend to make, but those people, at least, accept their end when it comes.

To wish for anything to last forever is absolutely idiotic, especially at such a great cost. He cannot keep his youth forever. What makes youth so wonderful is that it is fleeting, not that it should be prolongated eternally. Then, people would get awfully blasé, and hedonism would lose its entire meaning, for nobody would take any true pleasure in it anymore.

A man cannot be a work of art. He can be perceived as such, treated as such, and look as beautiful as one, but it changes nothing. Everybody grows old, decays, and loses their hair and teeth — if they make it that far. People die. Art dies only in the dark of an attic or the flames of censorship. Man can imitate art all he wants, but that is all he can do: Imitate.

Worry not. Your explanation was clear as day.
