I am not even SLIGHTLY normal about Jon in season 5. Not one bit. He can see and hear and feel every piece of suffering in the entire hellscape surrounding him, to the extent that he has to release it periodically or it becomes physically painful to contain, but he can also feel it feeding him and feel like he caused it. His immunity to being directly targeted makes it ridiculously callous for him to express to anyone around him that this is hard for him too, because it's not his struggle, is it? It's other people's. He's just watching - but he's not watching, he's knowing, and if he shares that with anyone that's just inflicting needless horror. But he can't contain it all alone or he'll explode. He is a torment nexus in the most literal sense of the word, but everyone around him sees his position as a privilege, and he can't even argue because they're right.

This really is a custom-made hell, for everyone. For Jon it's a mirror of his position in the eyes of the rest of the Archives staff from the end of season 1 onwards, and he can do no more to refute or act against it than when Tim accused him of locking himself away in his office and leaving the rest of them to figure it out themselves. The fear of being forced to be an observer and only that is what's being harvested from Jon here, just as surely as anyone trapped in a domain. He is unfairly spared from so much and unfairly subjected to so much more both at the same time, and no one can understand enough what that's like to see the position without at least a bit of horror and revulsion. Season 5 Jon. I am in shambles.
