Bleach Thoughts...

Doing my re-read of the manga and figured I'd post my interesting observations! So we all know this scene! It's the start of everything! As Kubo put it "and so fell the sword of fate..."

It's also noteworthy that whenever Kubo doesn't draw a background, it's because he wants us to really focus on what is happening between what he HAS chosen to draw, usually an interaction between characters.

The symbols between Ichigo and Rukia are ドクソ which translate to "dokun". That is the sound used for a heartbeat. I found it interesting that Kubo chose to have this sound between Ichigo and Rukia, rather than say just on Ichigo's side. To me, this shows a synchronization of their heartbeats. One could also argue that the shape of the sound characters is interesting as well! 

Although I doubt Kubo had already written Kaien's heart speech at this point, I do think it's very linear that Kaien spoke about the heart being between two people, almost as a direct reference to the very beginning here, where a "heart" is born between Ichigo and Rukia.

Of course, a heart being born between two people in Bleach lore is not always romantic. As Kaien says later, "Whenever people grow close… a heart is born between them. It isn’t inside our bodies. Whenever we care about something… whenever we care about another person… a heart is born. If you were alone in the world…I don’t think you could have a heart.” When you look at Rukia, knowing her past, you can easily see how alone she was, completely isolated and abandoned. That's a whole post in an of itself. Ichigo is also feeling alone in the World of the Living. Even with his friends, he is alone in this ability to see ghosts and he ability to see spirits and doesn't seem to open up to his friend's much. Even Tatsuki references that she barely hangs out with him at this point. He lacks the ability to help the ghosts he comes across and is frustrated by this further. So it's very fitting that "heart" is born between them!

~okay but can we talk about this for a second??!! Throwing this under read more so I don't clog up the dash but like...

Look at her face! Look at the sheer DESPAIR on her face as she realizes what he is doing! Notice the only way he stops her from interfering is with a direct order. When does Ukitake speak like that to Rukia? We almost never hear him speak in such a commanding tone. It forces her to revert to her training. That's the only reason she stopped moving toward him. Then he utters those words. "There are two types of battles" These are the words that haunt Rukia the most. See how she instantly flashes back to Kaien?! The hand gesture is the EXACT same movement she did when she flash backed to this in Ichigo's fight with Grand Fisher. Imagine the turmoil in her, the sheer panic and PTSD her body is going through having to stand back and do nothing as her captain dies? And let's also remember that this isn't just a boss > employee relationship. While I do think Kaien had a greater influence on Rukia as a whole, we cannot dismiss the influence Ukitake had on her. After Kaien's death, it would have been Ukitake that would have interacted with her the most. They shared that trauma and I do think he would have taken her under his wing as much as Rukia would allow. Of course, Rukia's natural tendency is to withdraw into herself but you cannot convince me that Ukitake did not notice; that he did not go to Byakuya to intercede for her and was shut down just as he did in the Soul Society Arc when she was sentenced to death.

And! When she was sentenced to death and he realized Byakuya wasn't going to do anything, this man defied the orders of the head captain to ensure that Rukia would not die. He is the one who oversaw her growth after that arc and into the Hueco Mundo arc. He elevated her to the position of his lieutenant - and this is after he emphatically said no one would ever measure up to Kaien. This is not a typical superior relationship. I really think Ukitake mentored Rukia and was the closest relationship to a father figure she ever had.

Now, with all that, imagine all of this when she had to watch him die. With his last words to her being "You understand, don't you, Kuchiki?" ??? Rant over for now. I'll be over here drowning in feels.~

I'm back online!!! WiFi is officially on and I can start using my laptop with some sort of regularity again!

So I updated a bit on my pinned post and RP guidelines, mostly clarifying that I consider the manga as my canon material with the exception of a few anime only scenes and two of the Bleach movies that I pull from. I still have to update my headcanons page with some actual content I've been mulling over for the past few months. I will do that sometime soon lol

I'm going to start posting some ask memes and make a post to have Rukia go into some of your ask boxes and send in some stuff to get some activity back up!

Human Verse - Rukia Kuchiki (Tag: Rukia - Human AU: A Soul Within A Body)

Rukia’s background in this verse is similar to her background in canon. She was raised on the streets since she was a baby, in a very poor area. Her parents abandoned her for unknown reasons. Rukia is still able to recall faint images of their faces but has long since given up finding out why they left or what happened to them. She has had to fend for herself on the streets since the age of 5, often going hungry, feeling extreme weather, and constantly on high alert from other people. She has witnessed the darkest side of humanity at such a young age. She was finally brought to an orphanage at the age of 8 where she met Renji Abaraii (this can be adjusted if needed). Rukia naturally keeps to herself as a loner but developed a friendship with Renji and formed their own makeshift family of sorts while there.

A few years later, Rukia is adopted by the Kuchiki family. They are very wealthy and own several profitable businesses in Japan. The true reason behind adopting Rukia was that they wanted to have both a boy and a girl but were unable to have another child after Byakuya and wanted the social clout of adopting an orphan. Rukia was their ideal choice as she looked similar to their son Byakuya where most would assume they were blood siblings. Since both parents are very busy running their businesses, Rukia is often left in the care of Byakuya, who is several years older than her. Knowing her past, he becomes very protective of her even toward his parents, often shielding her from the more unpleasant social events as Rukia’s reserved nature is an obstacle to climbing the social ladder. 

Due to her past, Rukia also has frequent visits with the family therapist. She has a more reserved personality, not interested in interacting with high society which her parents take as a “shy” personality. In reality, Rukia is just highly selective of her friends and who she lets in her inner circle. With those select few, she allows her true personality to show, often using physical touch such as punching/kicking, etc. The only exception is Byakuya who Rukia respects too highly to interact with in that way.  She suffers from nightmares, CPTSD, anxiety, etc. Though most of the time, she is able to manage this and present herself in a neurotypical way, it will be obvious occasionally depending on the circumstance. 

Rather than taking a ton of medication, Rukia prefers to work on this through a devotion to martial arts. She is an avid student of Karate, Judo, Kyūdō, and kenjutsu. She uses these disciplines to work both her mind and body when feeling out of control and also to ensure that she can protect herself. Her parents disapprove of these ‘hobbies’ as they are not typical for high society women but Byakuya encourages it, also studying these practices himself. 

She is privately tutored in their home until she is ready to attend the same private schools as Byakuya. Depending on the timeline, she also attends the same university. Rukia has always had a love for drawing and decides to pursue a graphic design degree. She hides chappy rabbits in her designs much to the chagrin of her professors and parents. Byakuya, however, loves this and encourages her to continue.

She has a penchant for high spaces, and can frequently be found relaxing in a tall tree with her sketchbook.

“Rukia-Kuchiki-Divided is my favorite Rukia, she’s one of the few who isn’t overly cold or violent (there are some others who I really like for the same reason but I follow her RPs most). I think she has an interesting take on Rukia’s emotions and her fears and such that I don’t see in other RPers, but I love how she interacts with all of the people she RPs with; she makes Rukia’s relationship with every person extremely different and I love that.”
