the autographimal reminded me of how, when I was a kid, I had a weird aversion to animate words in a way I couldn't really explain. and I don't think I ever really told anyone about, either (because even then I knew this was too weird/ironically couldn't put it into words).

not a genuine phobia or a reaction so bad that I couldn't tolerate them, but something about it just creeped me out. separate letters were fine, it was just full conjoined words where they were "alive" in unison that bothered me.

if I could hazard a guess into why in hindsight, it might be the uncanniness of identifying body language that I Should understand but is Off in something that also lacks a face, giving me no other visual signals to interpret. probably. it's me and even I don't know.

The new Discord UI looks like ass. Like it's even worse than the last update. The text and icons are so small given how much space there is? It looks like an intern put it together in fucking Dreamweaver with no idea on how to space shit apart.

It's so stupid looking. Even the compact layout has so much pointless empty space between elements??

god i wish 2099 (92) really sat down and engaged w the ways the race and ethnicity shapes the identity of its characters and world. It's both so interesting and incredibly relevant to the story at hand, but as is there's just this ommission lingering throughout 2099 when it comes to really grappling with the effects of this dimension beyond scant reference.

Miguel's desire to eke out a conditional acceptance from the systems of power gains an entirely new dimension as a moc <- the very tenous nature of that acceptance and how easily it is revoked, for example. but this is a dimension that's honestly not even alluded to beyond Stone anglicising Miguel's name.

Or even the implications that can be read between Miguel buying an insanely expensive costume for dia de los muertos (it's also literally the only thing he owns made from unstable molecular fabric) but saying he made this, again, Insanely Expensive Purchase, solely because he didn't want his clothes to get ruined. And yet this is one of the few small details that remains textual when it comes to Miguel's self-perception regarding his heritage and cultural identity.

And then tangentially, sm/2099 understands that racism nominally Exists and is bad, sure, but imo doesn't demonstrate an understanding of it's structural integration within the wider social hegemony the way it does an idealogy like capitalism, nor how racism would intersect with this.

There's no real exploration of how race would play a key structural role in something like Downtown for example, both regarding who is particularly vulnerable within Downtown, and being expelled into it.

2099 is very willing to speak on the ways class informs fiancial, and thus social, instability yes, absolutely. But it relegates exploring the dimension of cultural identity and race to the realm of scant textual reference. Instead we primarily have to look to subtext and implication about what should honestly be a core aspect of both the social critique 2099 wants to offer and a key influence upon it's cast of characters.

about the copyright stuff.. do you think if someone gave complete legal consent for approval of use in an episode (with legal documents giving them permission/ ownership of the material) do you think they could use fanfic/au ideas then? wouldn’t that work around the copyright protections or is that not possible because even then if the person tried to sue or wanted to they couldn’t since it would be in their ownership (rcg) technically.

I don't know enough about the intricacies of copyright and intellectual property law to really say I'm giving you a professional answer, but if a contract was involved relinquishing ownership and/or claims, I'm pretty sure, yes.

In all honestly, I would go as so far as to say just a blanket statement that you relinquish all your right, title, and interest to any original plot, ideas, and/or dialogue in your story would do it. Similar to how some studios or writers have had contests or promotional things fans can submit their fan works to, if you tick a box and say you read and agree to the terms and conditions (normally being you relinquish your right to any monetary claims if they use your work), that's all there is to it. So yeah, if RCG wanted to do some kind of "fan written" or fan-contributed episode they absolutely could.

Just to restate: the refusal of creators and writers engaging with fanfiction due to copyright issues is really when it's put upon them: a fan hands them something or DMs them. That, they basically straight up know/are trained to refuse and not to engage with. When it comes to something more organic, like imagining a creator looking through Ao3 or ff.net, the extremely low likelihood that they are going to do that is because they know it is a very murky area they can easily dupe or hurt themselves walking into. They're supposed to actively avoid it, and most do, but if you want to think (or even strongly believe) your guy is browsing fics when he's bored as hell flying back and forth from LA to Wales multiple times a month, slap a little release on your work, if you want (Sometimes you see release disclaimers on other people's fanfiction. Though a lot of the time it's just a rejection of ownership because people are paranoid they can get in trouble for publishing fanfiction...lmfao).
