For those of you unfamiliar, Aurat has come to prominence for being a goth band in which most of the lyrics are sung in Urdu, being fronted by Pakistani-American Azeka Kamal

My Nan, who was born just after WWI in Wales to Welsh parents, used to tell us stories of how kids caught speaking Welsh were made to hold a rubber band in their teeth which was then stretched and let go. Curiously, this made her very anti-Welsh. She married a navy lad at sixteen to rid herself of her Welsh name and get out of the country, and never spoke to her parents again. This wasn't a 'horrors of colonialism' story, but rather a proposed solution when she found out there were Pakistani kids in my class that spoke A Foreign Language and had taught me some words of Urdu. We didn't see her often, probably for lots of good reasons, but at least partly because she held my mother in complete contempt for not only leaving a good steady job to go to university, but doing it in Aberystwyth. I only knew her as a mean old lady and maybe she always would have been but I'd be interested to know how she might have grown up to be if she hasn't been taught to be ashamed of where she came from.

God, it's depressing though, isn't it? We all react to trauma in different ways. My mother's step-mother sounds very similar; technically from North Wales, but Jesus you wouldn't know it, and she's a screaming asshole. My grandfather was as English as they come, and tried to pay my father to leave my mother after my sister was born because "No grand-daughter of mine is growing up Welsh." (I would have been a tremendous disappointment if he'd lived to see me grow up, lol.) The wicked step-mother was fully in agreement.

Sunlight didn't wake him; breathing did. The measure of another body's life and warmth. The shape and weight and delicate muscle of another leg resting on his leg; leaner and shorter than his; pleasantly warm. 

He'd been dreaming—Ben thought he'd been dreaming, and he sighed, and the fireworks behind his hot red eyelids left on him the impression of its pleasantries. The next gala was a year away, and he'd made it through this one; he even felt well-rested. 

Then he opened his eyes. He opened his eyes to a smooth brown shoulder, well-shaped, taught with lean muscle, and smelling of cinnamon. That was nice. 

Then he saw the tattoos, and he scrambled. He recognized the cryptic bands in an instant and, in that instant, realized the body he'd made a fetish of belonged to Rashad. 

Ben's heart leapt, as he would have if he didn't feel crushed by shame. Instead, he peeled himself from the sheets and slunk out of bed. He was naked, which could only mean one thing. 

Clutching the doorframe and his—you know—Ben backed out of the master room. His stomach lurched.

He woke up and found Rashad in his Manhattan apartment, in the master bedroom, with the candlestick and the Hiroshima Mon Amour poster. 

No, he hadn't found Rashad; he'd committed a crime. How had it happened? Ben couldn't remember. He must have coerced—or been coerced—maybe it had been mutual, a double murder of sorts. 

It was true he kept Rashad sequestered from some of his friend groups—Marci, Ian, and Tihan—his peers from Edinbrough—his friend group from Columbia—but Ben kept all his friends in compartments. And he and Rashad had always been friends. Really good friends since prep. What if...

When the room started spinning, Ben decided to forgo thought. He stumbled into the guest bathroom and threw up. Not hungover, no. Sick to his stomach with discomfit, sure. Yes. Great. 

Ben then performed his supposed daily ritual as though the cleansing of his body and the particular order of each task would protect him—ward off the yips or something. He brushed his teeth in the shower. He shaved. When Ben's back was scrubbed raw, he toweled off. He ran argan oil through his hair and glowered at his reflection. He'd decided to stop thinking, but if Ben were thinking, he might have thought this was more than he'd do if he were actually going outside. 

He looked okay, though he was sweating at his temples by the time he switched off the bathroom light and trudged into the penetrating living room light illuminating thousands of dollars worth of Pakistani carpet squares, the art deco armchairs. He'd forgotten about those. 

Ben quickly pulled on whatever clothes he could find, anything that smelled all right, wandered over to the fridge, and rubbed the perspiring bulb of French-pressed coffee on his face, all over the slope of his face. 

"Mmm, gross," he muttered, pouring himself a tall glass. "You're gross." 

He poured Rashad coffee from a different carafe and added a splash of milk. A glass in each hand, he crossed the hot living room. Slowly, as if he were wading through a vast mangrove to wake a sleeping prince. What would the prince be like when he awoke? 

Morning rose twenty storeys from the Manhattan streets, blaring with yellow taxis and ripe lemon sun pouring through unadorned floor-to-ceiling windows. At the edge of his bed, Ben stopped and sat. The bed groaned on his behalf. He glanced at the sleeping Rashad and took a deep breath in. "Uhhhhhh." And a deep breath out. "Huhhhhhhh..." He licked his lips. He swallowed. He did everything but wake him.

Rashad really resembled a prince, too, his hand drawn over his brow, his long, ringed fingers looped in the melodrama of his hair. Eyes... 

Nope. No. 

He had to stop himself. Ben never had that voice he imagined most people did, the Jiminy Cricket, but he knew he had to stop dreaming. Rashad was royalty. He lived in a realm of rare artifacts. There was a palace, tradition, and expectation. Then there was Ben. He knew *this* had to be stopped. Now. Before someone got hurt, roasted, canceled.

"Uh." Ben swallowed before reaching for Rashad's arm, his hand just brushing his skin. "Hey-y…"

That a simple touch had become so uncomfortable literally overnight, literally, in the strict sense of the word, was a cruel irony.

How do structural mythology, cultural studies, and cultural history reflect the series’ world and world-building around superheroes? 

In the series Ms. Marvel, Kamala is a high school girl who one day acquires energy-based powers. The source of her powers comes from a bangle inherited from her grandmother who disappeared during the Partition of India. This bangle Kamala discovers in a box of her grandmother's belongings is later known to be a quantum band, that before this was only known to be heard of in myths and legends. This historical and mythological premise of the show dictates the origin of Kamala's powers and her path of discovery and growth as she develops and better understands her powers.

Additionally, Ms. Marvel incorporates cultural morals and identities into the superhero genre. Ms. Marvel allows for the depiction of South Asian cultures on screen which is pivotal as it is something that hasn't been seen as much previously, especially in superhero shows and movies. The series unapologetically showcases Kamala's Pakistani culture in a way that is intertwined with her life, family, community, relationships, and powers. This depiction allows viewers to broaden their understanding of what a superhero can look like. Furthermore, it showcases that one's culture doesn't need to be separated from other important aspects of their life, but rather greatly influences it.

In what ways are the superheroes and their abilities informed by their racial, gender, sexual, and cultural identities? 

Kamala idolizes Captain Marvel who fits the stereotypical American beauty standards of being a tall, white, blond, blue-eyed woman. Kamala on the other hand is shorter, younger, sturdier, and has brown eyes and skin. While their power gap primarily arises due to experience it is also important to consider these differences when exploring how they are portrayed and respected by their communities. Kamala dreams of being just like Captain Marvel, but as the show continues she learns to embrace the identities that individualize her while in action. Furthermore, Kamala’s costume design is greatly influenced by her cultural background and she uses traditional Indian jewelry to help control her powers. While she designs her costume through inspiration from Captain Marvel’s look, Kamala incorporates things from her background and identity to help personalize her costume. It is greatly modeled after traditional Indian attire and incorporates modestly following Islamic values and Haram. Kamala’s costume being able to be an outlet for self-expression acknowledges her identity while still being a powerful hero.

In what ways do costumes and concealing identities further separate the superheroes from normal society? How necessary is it for the superheroes to hide their true identities to successfully achieve their goals? 

In general, costumes are helpful to protect themselves and their families. Additionally, since costumes conceal their identities it makes it so that others have no understanding of who they are. This makes it so the actual individual gets no recognition for the good, or bad, things that they do as it is only associated with their alter ego. In Ms. Marvel, even though Ms. Marvel becomes the talk of the town and receives a lot of attention, Kamala receives no clout for her heroic deeds. On the contrary, however, it does allow her to get away with doing things that she would otherwise get in trouble with as a teenager with protective parents. Despite this, Kamala’s costume allows for individuality which in turn doesn’t conceal her identity as well as many other superhero costumes do. In fact, in the show, her close friends and family eventually discover her true identity later even after she initially attempts to hide it from them.

How do the economic, political, and social events that occurred during the series’ creation and broadcast cultivate and inform the superheroes’ decisions and actions? 

Kamala is highly influenced by her family and community in which both parties provide protection. As a Muslim superhero, Ms. Marvel receives backlash from a government agency that is portrayed as being Islamophobic and tries to identify her. This informs her decisions and actions as she has to protect herself from the challenges of being unfairly treated and villainized due to her religion and skin tone. 

How do the superheroes question themselves, each other, and their obligations and duties to the people around them? 

In the series, Kamala always compares herself with Captain Marvel who she idolizes and sees as perfect. Thus, when Kamala thinks of herself, she overanalyzes her own imperfections. When Kamala discovers her powers, she works towards perfecting her powers as she considers it her duty to use them for good. Additionally, Kamala wants to honor her family and community while using her powers responsibly. She has a desire to fulfill her destiny of becoming a great superhero, but this often goes against her parents' desires to keep her safe and not expose her to the evils of the world. This leads to tension between her shared responsibilities of protecting others while still trying to protect herself to fulfill her obligations of being a good superhero and a good daughter.
